Another NY clue: "Stand on the south corner of E. 54th & Lexington. What you need is above The Shops at Citigroup Center." That gives us the first pic on this page http://wirednewyork.com/skyscr apers/citigroup/ which looks like the letter H.

I would have to agree with you. I don't want to speak for everyone here, but I wasn't really checking the ARG Dark Knight websites on an obsessive basis. Crystal Skull, on the other hand, I check the news for every other second (I wish I was joking...).

But, Dark Knight was kinda thrown by the wayside. There hasn't been a peep here about Batman for months, it seems. But thank goodness you guys had an article on the Composer of Austin Powers!

lots of people have said it- all these virals smell more like the Riddler than the Joker. But I can't complain, it's a great campaign. It would be pretty cool to learn that the Joker has actually hired a brainy Goon to come up with the puzzles for him, and that Goon eventually goes out on his own as the Riddler, once the Joker is incarcerated. ....but I doubt it highly.

NO HOUSTON?!? OH WAIT HARRY GOT THREE IN AUSTIN! TYPICAL!
by Deus Vult

08:40:57 AM
Okay so let me get this straight...Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States with an economy that slaughters cities like austin with ease and even other whole countries but naturally we've been overlooked...how typical!

yet, harry is in austin, a small and relatively insignificant city in texas since the tech bust and dell imploding, yet he got not one, not two but THREE chances to take participate and take pictures!!! I think the only city that got more than that was NYC! you could fit all of austin in downtown nyc! for God's sake why is houston ALWAYS ignored?!?

and harry, with three chances to take some pictures, where are your links?!? do I need to drive west on I-10 and take 71 north to austin today to take the damn pictures for you?!?!??!?!?!?

SO BEFORE YOU SAY HOUSTON SUCKS THUS NO VIRAL MARKETING FOR DEUS
by Deus Vult
Oct 31st, 2007

straight from wikipedia boys, and despite how many of you think about monday, you can't argue away the numbers:

The Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown MSA's Gross Area Product (GAP) in 2006 was $325.5 billion, slightly larger than Austria’s, Poland’s or Saudi Arabia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). When comparing Houston's economy to a national economy, only 21 countries other than the United States have a gross domestic product exceeding Houston's regional gross area product.

OKAY OKAY so let me get this straight--the number one oil exporting country in the world has a smaller GDP than houston, a city with roughly 4 million people (combining the burbs and illegals mind you), and that's with oil at $92 a barrel!

hey if you aicn staffers (harry, mori, etc), austinites, other aicn readers/talkbackers are wondering why I'm flipping out, its easy: houston gets f*ed every time something interesting happens in this country and it makes NO SENSE. sure it's hot, humid, there's lots of skeeters, illegals, and other demographically unpalatable people, but so what?!?!?

I mean come on--the joker/batman site has raleigh north carolina, pittsburgh, and columbus! WHAT GIVES???! sure, these cities are fine places but to pass houston up for those! poor form viral marketing folks, very poor form.

...even if you don't want to participate, all you have to do is sit back and watch. I don't understand.... why the anger? ************** Different subject: yeah, there's some apathy at AICN -- mainly from Harry, I think -- toward Nolan's Batman projects, which I think is a shame. I don't think BEGINS quite nailed it, mainly because of the second half, but it's a great setup, and this could finally be a great Batman movie. (I don't think Burton nailed it, either, except for bits and pieces of RETURNS.) Anyway, just relax and have fun with it. My city (San Jose) was overlooked, too. Tsk.

Doesn't that mean it should infect everyone? Well obviously it's only meant for special people who live in the special cities. My closest bet would be to drive to Chicago. Fun! This was a huge let down. I'm gonna go off into a rant here, but I'm pretty sick of limited engagements or have a movie release in "select cities" 3-4 weeks before an actual release. What makes those cities so damn important. I don't understand how a movie that is plastered all over television for weeks or even months in advance of its release can only have enough copies to be a limited release. If you don't have enough copies to go around then fuck off and wait til you do. Don't advertise for weeks on end to the entire country about your movie to only yank the carpet on us at the end with a release that services a small percentage of the population. And how about just 1 trailer for a movie, or better yet, just a teaser? You'd get a lot more people paying to see your movies if you didn't ruin every exciting or interesting moment of it before it's even released. It used to be a teaser and maybe a trailer or two before the movies release. Now we have Comicon Footage, video blogs, teasers, trailers, red band trailers, foreign trailers with footage that wasn't shown in the American trailer, about a dozen clips from the movie before its release so that by the time I go to see your film...I've seen it. More movies need to do what 1-18-08 did and just release a kick ass trailer out of the blue with one of the biggest summer movies. I have no idea what to expect from that movie and I really don't care to know anything more until I walk into to see it. We've turned into the kids that sneak into the closet before Christmas, unwrapped everything and then re-wrapped it before Christmas morning. Only now our "parents" are doing it with us! I'm sure there isn't a soul on here that is going to read through and respond to this rant, but it's something I had to get off my chest.

Viral Marketing is not loved by "millions", nor does it improve Box Office at ALL. It is only entertaining for a select tiny group of people.

It's only a small, SMALL percentage of people (internet fanboys - and only a small percenage of those) who get into this shit. Most of the world is completely oblivious to it, and even if they WERE into this marketing tactic, it's solved by the time they hear about it. This "game" showed up late last night and was solved before most people woke up this morning.

Come to think of it, I guess THAT makes it bearable. The fanboys can have their fun, and for the general public, whatever the marketing "result" is (pics, etc) is up before they know about the game. It may be fun for some, but don't kid yourselves into thinking it has ANY effect on box office.

The reason for this, and other, viral marketing campaigns is to try to reduce the demand for "production" news and thus, reduce the amount of spies and leaked information. This keeps the geek audience from, to an extent anyway, from clamoring for every nugget of info that is related to the film while its in production. At the same time, they get to market the movie with their message, as opposed to the message received through information from spies and insiders. Never before have studios had to actually market a movie's actual production, but today is a different world, so they need to. This kind of stuff, created by the high standards of technological creativity of us geeks, is filtering its way into mainstream marketing strategies. Anyone get a message from Optimus Prime on their cell phone to promote the DVD? That effing rocked. Anyway, that's one of the reasons for the viral marketing shit.

Why it would make sense:
by abcdefz7
Oct 31st, 2007

Joker has already said "See you in December" and "I'm a man of my word." The pumpkin image that was on WSS was clearly taken from the cover of The Long Halloween, and it was Two-Face related. So it would make a certain amount of sense to reveal/not reveal Two-Face this way.

@TheApe: You have time to post comments on a movie site, I'm guessing you have nothing better to do. I don't see viral marketing as necessary or awesome, but it's interesting and something to do. I sit at a desk all day, thank god there are little things like this to help make it pass. I was already interested in the movie so this is just killing time for me. It's creative marketing. Not necessarily great or bad, but creative.

Say what you want about WB's viral marketing for the Dark Knight ("nerdy", "lame"), but they've put a lot of time and money in appealing to the fanboys and the guys with free time (i.e., without jobs living in their moms' basement) - I respect them for that. This shows much more creativity and initiative then slapping a trailer premier between two network shows.

I enjoy watching stuff like this unfold, although I have to admit, it always just seems like the studio preaching to the choir. The only people it actually reaches are the ones who are already hyped about the film and know everything there is to know about it anyway. Even by the time I usually find out about these "viral" campaigns, they've been completed by fanboys. I won't meet anyone today that actually knows anything about this website or scavenger hunt. Still, I give them credit for doing something creative, even if it is to just let people like us know that there's a sequel to Batman Begins coming out next year.

Regarding Houston getting "fucked"
by Elvis Cole Lives
Oct 31st, 2007
02:37:46 PM
Here's an idea -- MOVE! I mean, seriously, if it means THAT much to that Houston always gets the short end of the stick, then why don't you just move? It's still a free country. Plenty of awesome cities all around - LA, Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Miami. Pick one, roll a die, or whatever floats your boat.

Honestly, that's what I did. See, I'm a native Houstonian, born and bred. And, yes, you're right - Houston does get left out A LOT.

Great concert? Dallas.

Movie exclusive showing? Austin.

Win the NBA championship in the 90s? Have Sports Illustrated shaft the Rockets (first time the champs weren't featured on the cover), then have them put out a "special edition" when there's an outcry in Houston.

Look, I know it sucks. Trust me. Houston was great, but there are a lot of other great cities in the country and, while I miss my hometown, I've found a lot of interesting stuff to do in...

Jerkwater, Wisconsin! Where we're got two premieres and three concerts that bypassed the Bayou City this year! Woo hoo!

maybe they didn't expect the game to be over so quick. they may be holding out revealing the image (or whatever) till later- making it look like albuquerque is missing. note where it is: tucked under the x-acto. just a coincidence to be in a crucial spot?..........step back and think of the scope of this thing- and how they did it....it's amazing. they must have had a team of people- or hired representatives in each state/town to scout letters.....i mean, many are well known signs, but some are signs from closed or rundown places in bad parts of town....who the hell picked them? this better lead up to something big, because it must have cost alot (in travel expenses alone) just to bring us this silly game!

Okay, admittedly I came into this game late today, but I've seen the words there the whole time this afternoon, the words that slashfilm has "figured out." That can't possibly be the "finale" because why would we be waiting on those tweaked out, cross-dressing, car-stealing hookers in Albuquerque to finish the bottom right "blank" section. I assumed that the reveal was whatever was underneath the "ransom" letter. Am I wrong here? Was the "letter" not showing earlier today?
