As spin-offs go, I'm hoping this new "Office" is more along the lines of "Laverne & Shirley," quality-wise, and less like "Joanie Loves Chachi." More "Maude," less "Gloria." More "Joey," less "Joey." Points off if any character on the new show is related to anyone on the current show. No more Schrutes, please!

Even if one considers the American one inferior to the British, this is just a bad idea. The Office is a fairly unique kind of show for US network TV. Part of why I like it AND the Brits' version is they each have their own "voice". An new American one wouldn't be different enough and just makes no sense. MAYBE if there was some character or situation on the existing show that they think would make a good spinoff I could justify it. But to toss a bunch of new characters on a regular Office episode? My God, what is this? The 1970s/early 80s. Remember in the old days where a character would go visit their cousin Phil for an entire episode, and that would essentially be a pilot? Terrible. I forget the shows, but I remember one or two that didn't even make it into a series. *sigh*

But, hey, if they do this, then we American Office fans will feel how the Brit fans feel. "The original {American) version is so much better!!"

I want this new "Office" to have a hot blonde secretary, an obnoxious head salesman, a bumbling manager, a hip black dude, a cute brunette gal with glasses, a bespectacled nerd, a young voice-of-reason guy, and a burned-out former hippie. Perhaps, instead of a paper company, this "Office" could be a different business altogether, like, say... gosh, I dunno... a radio station? Baby, think of me once in a while!

That film crew that follows everyone around in every episode. What exactly are they working on? A single documentary taking place over several years? An ongoing weekly series that hasn't aired yet in their universe? An elaborate practical joke? In other words, what is this documentary called, has anyone in that world seen it, and if so, how popular is it? Popular enough to warrant fans camping out in the Dunder-Mifflin parking lot, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite office worker(s), or to report on D-M shenanigans on sites like this? Have any of these questions already been answered on the show, and I missed them? If so, BLAST!

I could see this working, if they have it in a setting besides the office. Like a warehouse, or maybe an I.T. firm where the dunder mifflin website is hosted. And Jonas Grumpy, well when Jim first went to the connecticut branch Karen did make a mention of him always looking at the cameras, which is kind of curious. That would be a cool episode idea, where they do a "behind the scenes" type episode, where we actually meet the fictional producers and cameramen of that show. American Chopper did this type of episode last year, where we saw the camera people, and the producer, and Mikey even went to Hollywood to see where the episodes are edited etc. Using that as a template it could lead to a pretty good episode.

For the first Office, they took an inexpensive but talented lead actor who soon became one of the hottest comedy stars (and legitimately so, for once) of his generation. The second time around, let's get someone a lot pricier but who's sufficiently cooled down for his agent to allow him to do a TV show. Man, we're geniuses!

...in a spinoff of the US version of The Office, I think I would lose quite a bit of respect for him. Not that I'm saying the American Office is bad or anything, I liked the episodes of it that I saw (except the pilot, which used like the *exact same script* of the British version, only with American pop culture references in place of the British ones). But that would just be a horrible step backwards for him.
Even if he played a totally different kind of character, that would just be awful. He's not a has-been yet.

It took me so long to get into the American Office because I was such a fan of the British one and its low key plot and subtle characters. I finally now love the American one but the reason it took so long was that Steve Carell over-acts his part so much that it's like a flashing red siren in a library. They need to lose him. Everything he does, from his mannerisms to his storyline, is unbelievable. Gervais was so believable in his creepy boss-ness because he was willing to not play it for laughs.

Man, you guys are serious haters. The US Office is fun because of its characters. Doing a new set of characters just in a different location could be just as good. Modlight--I agree that Carrell is the worst part of the show. He rarely shows any subtlety or realism to his approach. Infallible--also agree with you that it's the characters that make the show (in this case half of them are also writers on the show) and if a new series is cast right it coud be brilliant. We could get away from the Jim/Pam dynamic and all the comparisons to the British series (still most briliant). I trust that they could cast a bunch of writers/improv actors and come up with something completely unique. Call me an optimist.

Yep, saw that episode with Karen's comment. I'm just wondering if, in the "Office" universe, the documentary being filmed every week is actually being watched as a TV show, or if all of the footage from the last several years will, eventually, be assembled into a documentary miniseries, Ken Burns-style. I like your episode idea, especially if producers or cameramen reveal the answer to my question. 'Cuz I'm an enquiring mind, and I wanna know!

They can only look at things as formulas, get the formula right and you magically make money from it. This show--I mean formula is working, let's try and copy that again. Stupid fucks. Successful, creative, intelligent shows are not all of those things because they were trying to be like something else. How do these people feel about themselves? Do they even think about what they do? Are they completely oblivious? When they are old and laying on their deathbeds do they think back with a feeling of achievment at a life spent solely toward making money for some faceless, machine-like company? If only I made more useless money making shit, I could have kept people distracted with shallow bullshit instead trying to make any kind of meaningful impact on peoples lives. God damn I can't stand businessmen, or PR people, or politicians. It's all a bunch of fake bullshit all for some invisible system they've made up and only they can see. Like Star Wars or Star Trek fans, sort of.

Al Bundy as the boss

Will Arnette in the Shrute role, but instead of an uber nerd he is the smooth ladies man of hte office and a Starscream type 2nd in command secretly scheming to take his boss's job. In other words the anti-Shrute

Rashida Jones as Karen, but in more of the central role of the Jim character

Kal Penn in the Kelly role.

Lewis Black as a version of the Creed role.

Amy Sedaris in the Andy role... but this Andy is a slutty uber-geek

Michael Ian Black as some dick from coporate.

Nick Swarsdon as the closeted gay adminisrative assistant who doesnt believe he is gay and is appalled at how people think he is gay... but is really super obviously friggin gay.

Paul Rodriguez as the token hispanic guy in accounting.

Julie Kavner in the Phillys role.

Peter Dinklage as the boss's boss from coporate who comes in once in a while.

They need to have a more believable/different reason to have such crazy happenings going on in such a dull office. Michael/Dwight are basically incompetent/psychotic fools whose schemes get everybody else caught up in the craziness - if you just have another office with a retarded boss annoying everyone it won't work. I say get a more "regular guy" kind of boss, Paul Rudd would be excellent - and throw him into an industry where wacky stuff would happen to the office without the boss having to be so unrealistically incompetent (it's fun on one show, but a spin-off needs a new gimmick). Couple of ideas: Ex-Dunder Mifflin big city corporate type is fired and goes to work for his family business in some really podunk little town. Or maybe is let go with a huge cash payoff and starts a new business in a sector he knows nothing about, like fashion or he starts a newspaper? Make it a remake of Drop the Dead Donkey? In fact, that last part is genius: The Newspaper Office - Coming 2008

And as for whoever mentioned House, I have to disagree, I've been let down this season. Maybe it's because we're dealing with all of these doctor characters who I know when the dust settles, most of them aren't going to be around. Two, maybe 3 of them will still be around at the mid-season mark, so it's like, why do I want to spend time now investing in them. It's like now when I see a backdoor pilot Married with Children episode and you just know those characters are gone never to be seen or heard from again

Dammit. I've been dreading this day since NBC first renewed The Office for a second season. They've been heading in this direction for a year now. I could FEEL this nonsense coming. I knew they couldn't just leave well enough alone. While more broad and American in much of its humor, the re-imagining of the brilliant British series is still a diamond amidst the coal-black turd of NBC prime time which still must be warped weekly by the soul sucking marketing vortex known as the MISLEADING NBC PROMO: NEXT WEEK ON THE OFFICE, THE EPISODE YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR IN SLOW MOTION, PLUS WACKY HIGH JINKS! (can we trick Middle America into watching something with a whit of sophistication?) Son of a bitch. Now we'll have to always deal with the awkward "middle" episodes of Season 4 that introduced the wacky new characters who then disappeared quickly into the (now available for pre-order) box set: THE OFFICE II: THE COMPLETE SERIES! (With five episodes never aired!)

C'mon. You've got to be kidding. Asking why The Office is funny? A trip to the dentist?

Lemme give you some help.

First off, comedy is in the eye of the beholder so you know, right off, that you're the "beholder" in the minority. To paraphrase an old sitcom theme song, what might be fun to you, might not be fun to some. It takes... different strokes. I pretty much doubt that you DON'T get THAT.

Second, it's the character quirks (Michael's desperate desire to be liked, Dwight completely obsessive "otherness," Stanley's deadpan looks), the pranks, the idiotic PC-ness of an office (and Michael's absolute ignorance about his offensiveness in that regard), and the fact that, to some extent, we've all seen something ALMOST like it or heard about an office "horror story" like it.

Third, building on that, there's a little fun in the disfunctionality that "works" in this office.

Finally, let me add, a trip to the dentist NOT funny? Have you even seen Little Shop (the musical)? Nobody likes the pain of a dentists off (masochists excluded), but we've all suspected our dentists of some sadistic tendencies and to see that magnified and then sung about...

Well, even a dentist's office CAN be funny.

The story of a young man stuck in a medical registration office surrounded by middle-aged women who say things to each other like, "You go girlfriend" and "talk to the hand". They have singing hamsters on their desks and talk non-stop about Bo Bice and Jon Bon Jovi. They just saw Napoleon Dynamite for the first time and quote it constantly, adding it to their Austin Powers impressions. All the while the young man does job searches online and opens an AICN TB account to pass the time until he can get out of this fucking hellhole. It's called "The Office: I Hate Myself and Want to Die". It is a shitty, shitty show.
