I still don't think this should be remade or recast. Gerard Butler is cool, but I can't imagine him even coming close to the innate pissed-off, bad-assness of the Russel version. Another sequel would be great though, maybe dealing with an aging Snake's last big escape.

I think he sucks all by myself, I don't need any help from anyone to recognize he's hack. He doesn't bother me at all as long as he sticks to directing crap like Rush Hour and Money Talks, but now that they've started hiring him for projects I'm intrested in, that's where I have a problem. If Harry could derail his career, I would be eternally greatful.
DON'T REMAKE IT!!!
by ZeroCorpse

Some things are sacred. You don't remake The Godfather. You don't remake E.T.. You don't remake Star Wars (A New Hope). You don't remake Big Trouble in Little China. You don't remake ALIEN. And you don't remake Escape From New York!!!!!!!

There's no reason to remake it. There's no call to remake it. There's nobody who could make it feel as "right" as Carpenter and Russell. There's no score that would have the same feel as Carpenter's. There's no single person on the face of the Earth who could embody the character of "Cabbie" like Borgnine. There's no rack on Earth to equal Adrienne's. There's no soul master that can BE The Duke Of New York like Isaac Hayes. There's not even an actor today that can embody the character of "Romero" as it was in the original... There's NO WAY this will be anywhere near the original in terms of cult status or entertainment value... It's just going to be 90 minutes of CGI masturbation.

You want to get EFNY back on movie screens for a new generation? Clean up the original, advertise it as if it's new, and slap it in theaters. PEOPLE WILL SEE IT.

Let them make NEW movies--- Not remakes of classics that should never be touched by other directors and actors!

All Mr. Ratner has, & all he ever had is Chris Tucker. He rode Chris Tucker into the ultimate heights of fame in Hollywood. The studios saw the money being made from him, and of course, they gave him more projects, it's business! Is he a good filmaker? By any means,no! He is a perfect example of a paint by numbers director who has no vision or care for the audience. If he had any love for the art, he would invest some of his millions into a personal project. After "Rush Hour 3", along with Chris Tucker, you can tell they don't give a shit about making a good movie, and that they have no respect for us! Either way, Brett, or no Brett, the EFNY remake should not be made. There is nothing new you could do to it, & the storyline would not have any impact on today's audience. This will be a slap in the face for anybody who is a fan of the original film.

Although there were remakes that were very sucessful,(Scarface,The Thing especially comes to mind)high concept cult movies like EFNY should NOT be rehashed, that's like remaking Robocop,Aliens, Terminator,Mad max..ya feel me? I rather put up with another sequel of Snake (hopefully it will outdo the disapointing Escape from LA)in which he tries to escape from earth or even a direct to cable tv series (for HBO or Showtime) based on the comic; Snake Plissken chronicles. As for an aging Snake, it works for the other Snake as in Solid Snake. (MGS4)So muthafucking there. PS The Ratner hate is waay outta hand. It's not as if he's Uwe Boll and as far as X3 is concerned, despite it's flaws, it's way better than "Supes Redone" a film that Harry somewhat praised BTW. A film so lame that the writers will not have anything to do with the sequel not to mention that the plot from SR never existed!

I'm not even defending the guy as much as I am laughing at a bunch of daft loser who just wouldn't let it go. The last Ratner movie that got the "Harry" treatment went on to be one of the top 5 earning movies of 2006, and embarrassingly outdid that other movie of that other director that you guys think is a god. Harry never learns, and neither do all the sorry Ratner haters. It never worked with neither Fantastic Four movies; It never worked with Transformers this year; it definitely didn't work with X3 last year, and it certainly wouldn't work with any future Ratner movies. All it does is make you all look like sorry losers. Let it go. The guy makes money for studios ergo he'll keep getting big-name movies to do and big-name actors to star in them. You're talking about money, others here are film fans. My favorite film made fuck all at the BO, but I love it. Most people here are lovers of Cinema, not suits who care about the money. Damn shame of it is, by the time the studio gets their head out of their asshole far enough to cast him, they'll have Paul W.S. Anderson directing it. Then Kurt Russell himself couldn't save this piece of shit.

The Shitlist for directors who should also be hermetically sealed off from EVER being able to direct this unnecessary remake:

Uwe Boll - Cos this movie REQUIRES TALENT AND ABILITY! THAT LUNATIC TALENTLESS FUCK!!!!

...He's getting more pussy than any of us on here (don't even try to deny it, playa haters) and at least X-MEN 3 had a big smackdown hundreds-of-mutants-fighting-a t-once big apocalyptic feel to it. Unlike the studio bound other two, which featured boring old men drawling "The waaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrr has beguuuuuuuun" at each other for FUCKING HOURS and then having a fight at the end of each movie with - ooh! 6? 7? Maybe 10? - mutants going at each other? That is SO NOT the scope of the books. If I want soap opera where there should be action, I'll fucking watch LOST Season 2 again, thank you very much.

In a tight spot, when the rain's comin' down in sheets thick as lead, and some hairy ape has the back of your favourite head up against a bar and he looks you right square in the eyes and he asks you, have you paid your dues? Yessir, the check is in the mail.

There's not enough cool in every leading man today to equal that of Kurt Russell in that movie. I always ask myself, when I'm wondering what to do with my life:

WHAT WOULD JACK BURTON DO?

The answer, of course, is "fuck Kim Cattrall while she's still young and sexy," and you cannot go wrong with advice like that.

Right after he fucks up Preacher, he'll do this with Ben Affleck as Snake. After that, he'll probably replace Chris Nolan for the next Batman film (with Christian Bale replaced by George Clooney who decided to give it another shot). After that, he and Uwe will be replacing Robert Rodriguez as directors on Sin City 2&3, mainly because of their brilliant suggestion to Mr Weinstein that it should rather be shot in colour (coz that's how the kids like it). Then, just to finish things off, he decides to release his Super-Dooper Hellfire-version Director's Cut of Ghost Rider (in theatres) with 46 additional minutes of Nic Cage wrestling angry demon-iguanas by tossing fiery jelly beans and pointing his finger at them.

...EFNY, for what it is, is perfect and cannot be remade. This remake EFNY project is keyrap before it even gets made. As always, I feel for all the individuals out there with original concepts getting a pass so yet another movie can be remade into a pale and cheap (even if more $$ is spent) cgi-laden pathetic imitation of the original. And I wouldn't even want Carpenter to put down his Wii controller long enough to make a 3rd sequel as he hasn't directed anything worth a crap in well over a decade or 2. Leave well enough alone...EFLA was ass but still probably not as bad as a remake of EFNY would be.

Harry and this site have very little power regarding the ability to change how a film does financially. The one thing it could do is bring money to (extremely) small budget films that only need to do a million or two to be successful. Documentaries would be good examples of this. As far as other films, pretty much zero power. Examples: Snakes on a Plane, Grindhouse, etc. These films were pimped pretty much non-stop going up to release and they did horribly at the box office. There were almost as many articles about Grindhouse as people who went and saw it. This is not saying anything about the quality of the films pimped here, but it just shows that the potential box office impact based on things discussed on this site are minimal. On the flip side a movie like King of Kong could be helped by this site because $100,000 for a movie of that size is a major thing.

Yeah, I think Ratner sucks and have never enjoyed anything he's done, ever. So what? I don't give a shit how much box office he's pulled in (by the way, the studios have been rigging those results for years. Besdides, they wouldn't be so impressive if you subtract the dvd sales) and I damn sure don't give a flying fuck what swedish supermodel he's currently banking. I don't care for his work and since this site is about discussing such things I'm going to damn well discuss it.You people can defend hom all you want but I think it's a travesty to spend that much money and make such mediocre movies. It's one thing to do that on a shoestring budget but when you have budgets in excess of 100 million you better fucking deliver because there's a line of much more talented and enthusiastic directors just waiting for the golden opportunities Ratner keeps taking for granted. It's no secret by the way that the only reason the man is making movies on the scale that he is becuase of his past connections. It pays to be a good friend of Michael Jackson back when it mattered. So fuck off with your box office results and your swedish supermodels because unless any of those scenarios involve me, i don't give a shit. How does Ratners large bank account or swanky hollywood parties help me enjoy his movies more? Oh, and by the way to all the Ratner defenders and to Brinx Cheer in particular: I don't like Ratners movies, okay? Now my question is, WHY THE FUCK DO YOU CARE? "Some people make movies so they can by a big house and a nice car. Others direct so they can date supermodels. I make movies because if I didn't I would be drunk and homeless." - David Fincher Yeah, and that's from a real filmmaker motherfuckers!

We're lemmings becuase we care to speak up about unabashed mediocrity.Oh, you know why that is? Because some of us on this site give a shit about the direction american film is taking. Excuse fuckin me. Not all of us can be self righteous enough to be "above it all" like you.
oh, that's right

John Carpenter. Please man for your fans speak up and don't let them do this to your work. I'm sure someones gonna respond and tell me that Carpenter is behind this or something but I hope thats not the case. But fuck it I'd love to see a third installment and a sixth collaboration from John and Kurt even though thats probly asking a lot. by the way Ratner sucks, nothing hes done has been beyond mediocre hes just a director for hire and a shitty one at that but Ill give him this, the guy knows how to network. hes been able to wiesel his way into more than one golden franchise and bring them crumbling down, thats why hes infamous amongst true film lovers. theres no artistry or passion what so ever, at least not to my cinema loving eyes. and I have to admit that when I learned he was doing X3 I was very upset, and more so after seeing the movie. Stick to the comedy man please

Thanks man. I've always enjoyed your posts as well brother so that's appreciated. And ClockWorker, your right about Ratner being a great networker. He's nothing if he's not that. I have to give him props for his schmoozing skills because like it or not that's part of the job and anyone who wants to be in the directors chair has to be able to do that just a little bit. Well, Ratners' a schmoozer extrodinaire. Of course the opposite can work too: you know, to be super fucking talented but a weird anti social freak. For some reason, people in Hollywood love that just as much.

I almost can't THINK of better news. Okay, if they dropped this idea altogether, that would be great, but if they're gonna go ahead and reinvent the Snake at least Ratner won't be doing it.

Yeah, we can dump on Brett Ratner for X3's and his millions of Rush Hour sequels. However, isn't the biggest injustice the fact that this movie is going to be remade at all? Does it need to be remade? Who the hell would ever be a better Snake Plissken? I bet if you got the best director in the world on it, it will still turn out to be awful.

What the fuck has Ratner contributed to cinema? Hey, anyone want to create an award for Ratner, pay for him to fly in and receive it, and then we can tar&feather him ????
Just fucking boycott it already!

If NOBODY goes to see these movies, they go the way of HOSTEL 2 and fuck up the film-makers that make them. Since H2, Eli Roth is now avowing to tone down the gore etc and make other movies. Maybe if enough people DIDN'T watch these pointless fucking remakes, Ratner could go back to fucking supermodels and sucking Robert Evans off and maybe Uwe Boll could go back to plotting world domination. Don't much care where the fuck that WS Andershite goes back to.

And when you hear people you know talking about going to see a pointless remake... SMACK THE FUCKERS IN THE MOUTH!!!

Extreme? Watch THE FOG and tell me that. Seriously.

While it's admirable to see the kind of passion for cinema that you two obviously have spilling all over the keyboards of this fair talkback (which is a whole other kind of passion compared to what spilled all over the Megan Fox talkback fnar fnar), it's the worrying condescending tone you both give out that worries me. It's fine that you know more about film than most - good for you, we can all learn from your knowledge - but it doesn't make you a better person, and it's important to remember that. M-o-M - I know you get that, we disagree SEVERELY on the merits of BAD BOYS 2 but I think there's a healthy respect there for each other despite the yawning chasm of Baylove/hate. We just need to talk to each other on a basic level of respect and understanding, not going off on one because we have more passion, therefore more of a right to a point of view. We are all God's creatures, we are all beautiful and unique snowflakes (Tyler Durden's uber-nihilism notwithstanding).

All I'm saying is, chill out - this shit isn't worth an embolism over. The people on these TBs that don't understand you, probably never will. Treasure your ability to discern dreck from gold, and keep the faith. Fincher will reward you for it - when he finally gets back to a reunion with Palahniuk.

Yeah Boycott it!!!!!!!

Like he doesn't have an internet connection and the ability to check out aintitcool from time to time. Yes I do believe he is actually that pathetic. Now Brett, can I call you Brett? too bad. Stop showing up at hip-hop events like you're someone. You're not. Just stop. Also, X-men 3 wasn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be, but you could have fought a lot harder. In my book, you're a pussy. A big weak pussy, and that's why when your name is attached to a project people have strong feelings about it evokes a painful groan.

"Lifetime Achievement Award" for Ratner?
by Uncle Bobo
Oct 29th, 2007

That's so telling of the state of this country's film festivals. I attended the little known Jacksonville Film Festival last year and they gave their "Lifetime Achievement Award" to some Joe who wrote and directed the Travolta limited release film "Lonely Hearts," and that was the only thing he'd ever done, and probably will ever do! These cherry picking film festivals that keep popping up all over the country would sell their Grandmothers down the river if they could get the attention of a major film studio or any celebrity willing to attend their obscure events. It's all a business. Hence, all these stupid "Lifetime Achievement Awards" for hacks like Brett Ratner.
Brett Ratner's achievement is that...

...he is able to direct movies in the studio system and get paid big bucks for it while running on what little actual talent he actually has. For that, maybe he does deserve a Lifetime Achievement Award...
