Did some DC fan fiction writer take over Variety's website and start all these rumors about green lighted DC projects. We have all the obvious Justice League development, then the announcement that the girl who they just cast for WW will also takeover the role in that film, and now within the past two hours we have details on Flash and Green Lantern. I think it's time for Harry or whoever to give a state of the union type response to all this stuff.

its gonna be big. this has to be, after, bats and superman, a GL movie would be a huge blockbuster for DC if done right. Marvel, for the most part has got its creations on screen done correctly for thier major money spinners. the hype over iron man seems well founded,Dc needs to step up their game, generate the same excitement over GL. get the casting right, pick the right guy to helm it and dont fuck it up

i dont know how this links in with the justice league movie, surely this woudl be out before that ideally.

this will be the one to watch. And thank god its Hal!

it doesn't matter what was established in the comic, and it doesn't matter if they come up with a logical story behind it. if they go from a black Green Lantern in the Justice League cartoon to a black Green Lantern in the Justice League movie to a white Green Lantern in the Green Lantern movie, people are going to be pissed off. more people watched that cartoon and will see that movie than have ever read a Green Lantern comic, so regardless of the character's origins there will be controversy.

I liked the Jack Black idea.

And I'll tell you else who'd be great: Will Ferrell.Yeah I said it.

The fast is that I think Green Lantern would do well with some comedic elements. There's really nothing special at all about Hal Jordan. He's the tofu of secret identity guys. If Hollywood can make it a good action movie with some wit and funny to it, all the better. I dont understand people wanting to play GL so earnest and straight. At a certain point it kind of gets to be same story, different suit. That should be avoided.

Seriously though, are they going to throw all those DC heroes movies out at the same time? Why? It seems that they (and you know who "they" are)feel pressure to catch up to marvel and they are gonna release them all at the same time. I think that they should just do what they did with bats and supes: take the time and do good movies. Although Superman returns was not a very fun movie it was a very well made movie, and batman was just excellent.

Another thing with the green lantern is that his powers could actually look cheesy on film. I cannot imagine how big a gelatinous green hand can look good on a serious movie. Wait, this is a serious movie right?? This is not the Jack Black the mask - like version of the movie is it?

Because Green Lantern has a genuine, specific character and myth

He's the only character Batman is afraid of, because he has no fear. He's the only DC superhero I'm aware of who is defined by being a straightforward, competent guy, not a genius or a god or a well-intentioned kid. He's an intergalactic police officer who always does the right thing. The point being, he represents a lot of things to a lot of people, and he's a character with a tremendous history, and to turn it all into a big joke is to say that those things aren't important. I understand that it's an industry, but a lot of us get a lot of personal meaning from these types of stories, and seeing them treated as jokes is painful.

Batman vs. Hal Jordan
by Thenedain
Oct 29th, 2007
01:55:13 AM
Phool's got it right, Hal's among the only heroes that good ol' Bats fears and respects, something that's been touched on multiple times since the GL: Rebirth series. They have a great character dichotomy: One employs fear as their main weapon, the other has to rise above it. In fact, at one point Hal allows Bruce to wear his ring for one moment, and with it Batman creates a giant holographic picture of his parents. Anyway, the Hal Jordan GL is the definitive version of the character by far and the one best suited to the screen. A GL movie or franchise actually benefits from not only being a superhero movie, but a sci-fi space conflict movie as well. It's got alot of potential, which sadly means it will probably all get wasted on something utterly retarded for an origin flick.

I was hoping John being in the JL movie for rubbish reasons wouldn't preclude a Hal Jordan-centric GL film. And where was it ever said that Batman is afraid of Hal? That's rubbish. Rebirth? GL, Vol. 4 #9 maybe? Nope. We learn that Hal pisses Batman off because he doesn't "buy into" Batman's schdict... never is it said he fears Hal -- you guys made that up.

and he knew he was dying, he had his ring find someone fearless and the ring gave him 3 names: Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Guy Gardner. Hal got the gig because he was closest geographicly. The injusry that caused Guy's brain damage came later.

In real life history Hal was first, but in ret-conned DCU history, Hal, John and Guy were all selected at the same instant, but Hal was given the ring first.

But U knew that. [I don't know how Alan Scott fits in current continuity. but man, he ties with Robin and Dr. Strange for funkiest costume of all time.]

..but Bats definitely respects Hal. You'd have to imagine that Bats has had to rewrite his "How to Deal with a Rogue Hal Jordan" playbook multiple times since Hal's return, though. Must be a pain when your subject keeps finding ways around his weaknesses. Speaking of which, it'll be interesting to see how the writers choose to use the Yellow Impurity. I kind of hope they never address Parallax, simply because that's a story that would likely never work on the big screen. I'd be happy with them just going with the 'rise above your fear' approach to get around the yellow weakness.

10-15 years ago, I probably would've given the ring to Dennis Quaid - A GREAT Hal he would've been. 10-15 years ago I would've also said to cast Denis Leary as Guy Gardner and Raul Julia as Sinestro. NOW...I think a Nathan Fillion Hal is a really good match, and since Leary is a bit too old now, maybe Scott Caan for Guy? And Jason Isaacs might make for an interesting Sinestro. Oh, and Biz Markie for John Stewart.

...a story that plays out over a trilogy or series. If they're going for Sinestro being Hal's mentor then Hal exposing him as being a villain (shoulda guessed by his name, right? It has the word "SINISTER" in it) then that's gonna require more than one movie to play out the whole thing, even if Sinestro's defeated by the end of the first film. I say first one ends with Sinestro imprisoned in the Central Power Battery, second one charts the corruption of Hal and destruction of the Lanterns, the third is "Rebirth" and the Sinestro Corps War. And everyone, check out GL at the moment, starting with REBIRTH. It really is the best stuff since Alan Moore.

I'd read somewhere that GL's costume is generated by his ring. Thus, the outfit in the movie should be wrinkle-free, and slightly glowing. SLIGHTLY. The actor will probably have to wear a mo-cap suit to make this happen, but it SHOULD HAPPEN. I also hope that they don't include that weird floating lantern emblem the current comic artists favor. (I hate that almost as much as the oversized scales on Captain A's costume, pre-death. It made Cap look like a blue version of Big Bird.)

As an on-off fan of the comic book, I'm glad WB is looking to put this into production. I'm still concerned they will try to take a semi-comedic approach to the material and their choice of director doesn’t automatically fill me with joy. Like Batman, Hal Jordan is one of DC’s more complex and cerebral characters. I’m fairly certain that this first instalment wouldn’t be a major space epic and more likely would settle on the theme of the ordinary guy who gets the ring. From what little I’ve read the director is of the impression that anyone can possess the ring if they are in the right place at the right time, which as fans will know is simply not the case. This again harkens back to why Hal Jordan and what makes the man – Will vs. Fear, Hal vs. his inner demons. Like Batman Begins, this would be best as a portrait of a destroyed man who rebuilds himself. Hal Jordan represents the inner battles of a man crushed by events, who then picks himself up to reach his potential. We know already that it has to start circa 1960/70s (unless they go the teenage route) and the childhood incident at the airfield when Hal loses his father. Leap forward to present day and Hal Jordan is a burned-out test pilot, not half the man he could be. Segue into a few disastrous events probably around the anniversary of that event and Hal taken to his absolute low, no will power at all. Enter the dying Abin Sur and the handover of the ring. From this point we will either remain earth-bound as Hal begins to fix his messed-up life, while as GL he fights off attacks by some cosmic enemy – most likely Sinestro (in this incarnation never a GL himself); or we will go into space and meet the GL Corps. I agree that this film has the ability to be epic, but so too does a Superman film that doesn’t centre continually on Lois and Lex Luthor. That’s why I don’t think it will reach epic and stick instead to safe. Superman and GL aren’t merely comic book stories, they are science fiction epics. WB doesn’t understand that concept. I’m firmly of the belief that we won’t see a Sinestro Corp War storyline and I’m happy with that; great comic series, but too grand in scope for a two hour picture. A SCW story on-screen would really lack character development. In the comic the story is a culmination of the grand history of GL and other DC arcs, you couldn’t do it justice in the time frame. As a TV series I could see it work – is it really so far-fetched in this day-and-age? I think DC could handle many of its comic properties in that manner. Imagine Smallville without the teenage slant or a Batman set in the same tone as the Nolan films.

"lay his dirty hands to write a DC hero's script"?.. which was the excuse for dropping Mark Millar? Oh right, the good ol "bullshit".
I'm happy that there will finally be a movie!

I wish it the best, because it was one of my faves as a kid. I hope that it isn't too kid-centric. I pray that it is as big of a space-epic as my imagination of it is. Abin Sur! our prayers have been answered, huh? Good to see that you weren't too far down the TB.

I disagree. Hal Jordan's trait was that he had no fear because he never looked at his inner demons which came out when Coast citu was destroyed, which was the difference between him and Kyle. The first movie should be that Hal Jordan isn't a burnt out test pilot, but a fucking crazy one that no one wants because he's too out there but his boss was friends with his dad and then he gets the ring. I think that's a better dynamic. Of course he is grounded to fixing planes because of his actions and the "Hal Jordan used to be an ace pilot" ok maybe it's similar. I don't know what i'm talking about. but the one you described is too similar to batman begins and Hal and Bruce are different people, one uses fear to inflict fear, the other has no fear. of course that will come back to haunt him.

If this is a franchise that they pump out, by the 7th movie they could have gotten through emerald dawn, emerald twilight, rebirth, GL Corps Recharge and then come to Sinestro Corps War. it can work. Just a bit of patience......and GOOD FUCKING WRITERS!

most of it anyway. In Blackest day, in brightest night, beware your fears made into light, let those who try to stop what's right. beware my power? sinestro's might. well missed the last line.
Elvis Cole Lives, excellent point.

We are all brothers in the land of geeks. (I was fortunate enough to find and marry a lady-geek, too. BONUS for me!)

Appreciate the comments Messi, though I can see where you are coming from I still think fear is an essential part of the Jordan character. I don't see him as a Daredevil-type who had no fear. Hal Jordan can be the crazy test pilot/ drunken bum or whatever else but the bottom line is that he doesn't face his demons, which to me suggests he doesn’t confront his fear. Hal spends a long time in the wilderness because he doesn't know who he is without the ring. Most superhero's carve out their alter ego and make it a reflection of their ideals (as you say Batman instils fear in others/ Superman engenders hope); Jordan however hides behind his ego, in the early years at least. That he is courageous and that he has a wild streak in him I don’t doubt at all. I’ve thought for a long time that Jordan is easily the most psychologically complex character in the DC universe, and that the human component of the GL corps add to that (John Stewart and the Mosaic saga, etc). I think the final issue of Emerald Dawn had Hal on a test flight that goes wrong. In the final panels he decides to throw away the ring and bring in the plane unaided, potentially at the cost of his own life should it go wrong. This would satisfy your interpretation of Hal as the wild test pilot, but more truthfully, this is his manner of conquering the fear relating to his father’s death, but also of asserting his own will, minus the ring. I could see the film going the same way, with his father’s death being a major albatross Hal must bear.
