I know a lot of people love it, but it just doesn't sit right with me. I like the cast, I laugh at it, and I love how they occasionally do very serious episodes, but I don't consider myself liking the show. It's all of those cartoony swipe and motion sounds when someone turns their heads, that take me out of it. For a show that many people have said NBC doesn't care about, seven years is a tremendous amount of time.

I'm liking the 4th season so far. Sure not all of it was a hit but it was still better than most comedy shows on TV. I'm also glad that they haven't been trying to bring tension between Jim and Pam now that they're together. For those of you who think Michael is too over the top need to remember that if this were the real world, he would've been fired by now. People have been fired for saying and doing things that weren't nearly as offensive as what he has done throughout the entire show.

For me, at least, was 30 Rock..."Help me Liz Lemon...you're my only hope!" was priceless. And Alec Baldwin's "Sanford" impression made me pee a lil bit. Papillion dog fighting? The "Page Off" was also hysterical. The Office was the second best of the night after 30 Rock, IMO. Dwight's Second, Second Life...Meredith's confession about her "video exploits"...and her ultimatum to Jim for the ride home...and Michael's musical criticism..."I don't hate it...I just...don't like it...at all...It's terrible!". I prefer the half hour format, too..and I also like them keeping the show IN the office, for the most part. Earl was also great...Joy crapping herself...Alyssa Milano in that sexy cop outfit...the half shemale boob grope...all good stuff. Anyone translate what Catalina screamed at Joy in Spanish after SHE shit herself? Scrubs was...well...just Scrubs. Could we finally find out The Janitor's name thru his new "Lady" friend this season? Looks like the final season is leaning towards a sentimental/mushy conclusion. Ho hum. Nevertheless, NBC Thursday owns the 1/2 hour sitcom mantle, for me.

Was certainly on tonight. When Tracy said, "Now do me" and he did it, I howled. Plus he wrapped it up nicely with the mention of having a Howard Cosell impresssion "in his pocket" just waiting to be pulled out. However, I did see it twice tonight and the second time I didn't laugh. It couldn't startle the chuckle out of me anymore. That is the difference between the two shows for me, I think. I can watch parts of the Office over and over, and I'll still laugh at the same bit.

Speaking of Dwight's second Second Life, it showed good perception on Jim's behalf to notice how withdrawn Dwight is becoming, even after their little talk. He even created a character himself so he could keep tabs on him (or so he says. I just think Jim is kinda geeky too). However, I noticed that when he tried to include Pam, she laughed and didn't take it too seriously. Then she said she was going to stay and work late when she was Jim's ride home. How do you forget THAT? I think this could become somewhat of a contention between them. Pam has her art and animation to focus on and Jim has...well, Jim has Pam. It was a subtle shift but I think Pam is growing and Jim might start feeling a bit left behind.Ï

...and no one seemed to understand what he was saying. Time is fluid and ongoing: the best show on NBC "right now" is whatever is on NBC RIGHT NOW because nothng else is on at the current moment. Unless you think the Spanish translation on the Second Audio Program channel is the best thing on NBC right Now.

The Office does a 2nd Life episode the night after CSI New York did a 2nd Life episode? The alleged best comedy on TV "right now" is borrowing ideas from the third best CSI show?

At least 30 Rock is honest...
by mraig
Oct 26th, 2007

...about how the network crams product placement down its throat. They don't even try to hide it; they just make the plotline about how NBC is trying to force them to incorporate into their plotline whatever product NBC is, in the real world, telling them to incorporate into their plotline. And based on the number of jokes 30 Rock is getting out of this concept, NBC (and every other network, I'm sure) must be pushing this hard. 30 Rock seems to be an interesting fun-house mirror of what goes on in the real world of network television (e.g. the Jerry Seinfeld episode at the beginning of this season, leading to week after week of hardcore pimping of Bee Movie).

And of course the Office has to do just as much product placement, but the fact that they just roll over and do it (how many storylines have prominently featured Staples over the years?) without the irony that 30 Rock uses bothers me a little. Maybe I shouldn't take it as lack of integrity--it's a show, it's a business, we get to watch it for free, etc.

But really, how much did the Second Life plotline add to last night's show? Okay, there were one or two laughs--shots of a realistic looking Dwight flying up into space were amusing, and Pam ribbing Jim about getting too into using it to observe Dwight was cute. It wasn't as bad as the episode about the new Staples shredder, where the joke was that the Staples shredder efficiently does its job of shredding anything. And it served Dwight's character right now in that it emphasized his loneliness and isolation.

But I don't think for a minute that what happened *wasn't* that the studio guys called up the writers and said, "Hey, you need to write an episode in which Second Life is featured prominently, on screen for no less than three minutes and mentioned in dialogue no fewer than ten times."

And about the ad:
by mraig
Oct 26th, 2007
06:05:03 AM
I think they hit the right balance in making the unused Director's Cut of the ad neither too good nor too bad. It was appropriately rough around the edges (bad camerawork, jerky transitions, you could see the string on the flying paper), but it wasn't some laughably bad amateurish joke. It was imperfect, flawed, not ready for prime time, but it also tried its best and had a lot of heart (HINT: Hey, it's like the characters on this show!)

And to the poster above who speculated that this might be signs of cracks in the Jim/Pam relationship: I think the fact that, as a couple, they're not joined at the hip and don't have to be together every second, and that they can tease each other without having to say, "Oh darling, you're perfect" over and over, is a sign of strength, not weakness.

My guess is that the writers know how tedious it would be to give us any more serious Jim/Pam drama, and have acknowledged that by making Dwight/Angela/Andy and Michael/Jan and Kelly/Ryan/Daryl the new romantic tension points.

Are Jim's ambitions going to be the focus of upcoming seasons? As far back as the 1st season, he was dreading becoming a manager at D-M, and now he sort of is one. He seemed to be kind of envious of Pam for having followed her dreams. Jim's Second Life character could be a glimpse at things to come.

If you can't use basic linguistic skills to interpret comments like an adult then you're either a) retarded, b) about 100 times less clever than you would like to believe, or c) a troll. Given the guy is obviously too stupid to figure out how to use his remote to change the channel or, God Forbid, turn off his TV and read a damn book, instead of watching this alleged 'crapfest' of a show he suffered through, I'm guessing it's a combination of all three.

Yes...you can see the beginnings of Pam's yearning to be more than just "the receptionist". I think we'll see an episode soon where the roles will be reversed from last season...and Ryan will tap Pam to move to corporate to become the new Art Director for Dunder-Mifflin in New York...and Jim will have no choice but to let her go. Her new career will become a stumbling block for their all too "easy" relationship. These two have to get torn apart again...it's just a matter of time, and I think last nite's episode was only the beginning of this plot shift. Her decision to leave Scranton will probably be the big season finale....you watch.

Either way, it will rachet up when Karen makes an appearances and sees that they are now a couple. But mcraig, I wouldn't easily call leaving Jim stuck with a ride home as light hearted "teasing". I think you are jumping the gun a bit with the "it will hurt the show" pronouncement. First off, and it's a biggie, it hasn't happened yet. Are you going to stop rooting for them at the first sign of trouble? I was a proponent of their attitude: they kept up the ribs against others but they were also caring. That said, I'm not wanting them to fuck it all up with a sitcom Three's Company-like "misunderstanding".

Second, tension and awkwardness is pretty much the shows bread and butter. The entire of the premise of the show is different personalities trying to work together in a tiny space. Hook-ups, break-ups, rivalries...it's all going to happen just for the basic reason that they are in contact all the time. It is the times that they all get together and rally (teamwork!) that off set the expected work releated situations and give us our "Awww" moments.

I agree with Biz_Jerry in saying that a season long angsty break up would suck shit. Dwanglea and Micheal-Jan are going to have it cornered this season.

And mcraig, stop watching TV altogether if product placing is going to make your asshole pucker so fucking bad. Everyone has gotten used to it except guys who like to bitch about it.î

The half hour segment this week was much better. But I do believe there will be a conflict between Jim and Pam. Look at the way Jim put his arm around Pam when the bartender came on to Pam. It'll be the story of Pam looking for new sexual excitement, which she can't find with Jim.
