'Cause I broke the addiction a while ago, but I still swing by every once in a while, the way former nic-addicts let people smoke in their car. So... Cap is dead. The resurrected Bucky has been building to be the "new" Cap. This "new" Cap is going to be a Cap for a modern age - a little less shield, a little more Patriot missile. Not that Bru's Cap was entirely married to Silver Age morality. And then...what are we expecting next? Some Bucky/Cap adventures peppered with liberal doses of "what Captain America means" as we see a newer, less friendly Symbol of America fight for a newer, less friendly justice... only eventually to be confronted by a somehow resurrected Steve Rogers who returns to pick up the shield and show his harsher doppelganger where he's gone wrong? Or is there a feeling that something more complex and dare-i-say surprising is under foot?

what no review for the sequel to the best-selling Marvel title in years? Well, I thought it was pretty damn good! Very funny and a good continuation of all that's come before as well as an interesting set-up for what's to come. My one complaint? Sometimes the art is really good, sometimes it's not so good, like it was done in haste. I hope it gets better and more consistent. Otherwise, it's Chow-down time!

I liked this story better with it was called "Knightfall". Or Option B (the less blindlingly obvious one) is that the Alex Ross Cap is a bad guy, Bucky beats his ass, THEN Steve comes back. Or Steve comes back to beat up Alex Ross Cap. Anyway, that guy is temporary. Also, yeah, there really should have been a review of Marvel Zombies 2 in this week's col. Zombie Hawkeye! With tits!!!

...yeah, I'm not too sure about that either. I mean, Brubaker has been working Bucky towards his inner Steve Rogers and getting him to face up to his past and change a little, but then the new Cap's carrying a gun and it's pretty unlikely he's going to be the same Cap we've known. (Bru just better not pull a NEW AVENGERS and say Cap had it coming because he was too nice...but I put him above that.) Either way, in the context of the whole run I don't see a confrontation between Bucky and Cap. Bru's working long-term anyway: 30 issues in we're still on the original storyline with no end in sight, which I would have a problem with if it wasn't so well-written. Anyway, there's still Cosmic Cubes and the Red Skull's doing time travel stuff in the background, so it seems like something is planned with Steve Rogers and resurrection. Maybe Bucky uses the Cube to will himself out of existence in exchange for Steve Rogers' life, similar to what Cap did at the end of the second arc? But I can see a lot of people seeing that as a cop out. But I can't really see them going back to being partners either. I mean, from the outside it seems like he's worked himself into a corner, since whoever comes after him is going to bring Steve back if he doesn't, but he's obviously had this stuff worked out for a long time and for now he’s got my trust. Also, although it hasn't been focused on for a while, what the Red Skull's doing is of giant significance. He's been orchestrating this whole plot since early on in the run, so it’s more than likely that he's not prepared to let Steve Rogers rest in the ground just yet. I mean, the death thing was a giant curveball and his goal sounds a lot bigger than that. Maybe he's gonna go back in time and kick Steve Rogers' dad in the nuts so Cap never existed? I just don't know.

Actually having thought about it while typing that post, here is my final prediction: we get a few issues of the angsty Bucky being a harsher Cap, while the Red Skull furthers his plot to stomp on Captain America and the USA once and for all, which involves bringing Steve Rogers back in some shape or form. Bucky and Cap defeat the Red Skull and his minions, in the end Cap is still dead but Bucky's learnt how to really BE Captain America. But that could be completely wrong.

First of all, is it just me, or is Mark Brooks evoking Mike Wieringo a little bit in UFF 47? Particularly in his depiction of Ben Grimm...? Second of all, Captain America continues to be great, but I really, really hope they don't make Bucky the new Cap. I said before, they should make Falcon the New Captain America. But, Marvel also announced that there's gonna be an Avengers/Invaders crossover involving the original Invaders time-travelling to current day. I'll bet you a dollar Cap stays here when the Invaders go back, thereby "bringing back" Steve Rogers. Also, you can play up the "man out of time" aspect more prominently with a time-travelled Steve Rogers...

01:22:14 PM
This Saturday 10/27 at 7 pm pacific, a great interview with Bruce Campbell and Mike Richardson of Dark Horse comics airs on the radio variety show Live Wire, on Oregon Public Broadcasting. If you're local you know where to find it, but the rest of you can listen online at: http://tinyurl.com/ynwbmg (I feel like a tool using tiny url when the real address is www.opb.org much tinier than the tiny, but it seems like the thing to do.) Anyways, there's a link to listen live and it's totally worth a listen. Bruce and Mike talk a lot about "My Name is Bruce", Sam Raimi as an abusive stick wielding director, 30 Days of Night, Hellboy and more. Bruce even steps into some sketch comedy with Faces for Radio Theater and goes OFF on people who like to call him Ash. The musical guest is the band Loch Lomond.

He's with them because...hrmm...okay, I dunno. I DO know that he's more of a Thor foe, but was never really interested with earth. Somehow, he knows Ms. Marvel (I have no idea where in continuity that occurred, but he greets her with a "Hi Carol" in MIGHTY AVENGERS #1.)

Of course, the Black Widow should remember him - didn't they fight some waaaaayyyyy back in Champions #3?

I may have to consult the longboxes - if I even still have them. But you, Smerdyakov, are correct.

It was his idea, and a lot earlier than I would've ever expected. But it was all very rational of him. He said it would be impossible to completely shield me from the perils of his position and any enemies he might have, so he figured rather than me simply being his lady who would be in a more off-able position were I captured, being his wife would mean, in addition to my added asking price would also up the expected amount of retaliation he would summon to punish those involved. Thus, a deterrent. Besides, he also said since he hadn't found a gal to his liking on his own earth by that point in life, he sure as hell wasn't going to go through the trouble again of looking to any other alternate earths; he's not a spring chicken anymore, either, so why wait? And true, I was with the man of my dreams, literally, and my sugar daddy given that I couldn't bring much with me when abducted between earths - it just made things official.

Near-exactly 24 hours after he popped the question, we were married in Vegas with a small coterie of supervillains as witnesses (he wanted to thank the guys for bringing us together, so brought 'em over, all expenses paid). Of course, we had planned to marry the previous night, but it all went to pot when Grant Morrison gave me my powers and promptly died, leaving me to figure things out and fight an avatar of mine in the main arena of Roulette's House. But as that's a story arc I plan to actually get to one of these years - complete with a wicked-ass battle issue - I'll leave those deets for another day.

Countdown, DC in general.
by Homer Sexual
Oct 25th, 2007
05:41:22 PM
First, let me say that I generally prefer recent DC directions to the mess of CW at Marvel, but...

Barda is dead? Boo! That sucks! In fact, I think this whole "Death of the New Gods" is a major bummer. Worse yet, they've killed two of the three or four main women...and in very paltry manner.

Then, Countdown...ok, I admit I have a major problem with Jean Loring the evil killer. Total misogyny, IMO...but I was cool with this whole Dark Mary Marvel thing, assuming it was a temporary thing...but it looks to be ongoing for a long time.

And the developments in this weeks Countdown? I guess it's going somewhere, but I am not convinced it's anywhere good.

Oh, and the latest BoP was totally underwhelming, but now that I know it was a fill-in, no problem.

Should I have put "spoiler" in previous post? Since that comic is over a week old, I didn't think it was necessary.

Why can Kirkman write such an awesome Marvel Zombies (latest one continues to be outstanding), yet be so horrid on Ultimate X-Men that I had to drop that title, and every issue I check..but he's still writing it. Definitely shows that good writers can't necessarily write everything well.

One problem with the overpowered team books is aking challenges for them that seem plausible. The writers have to resort to reservists being busy with other crises etc. Why wouldn't they just send out a signal to all the reservists? It bugs me. Green Arrow wouldn't fly in to help BC?
JLA - Thanks for the solidarity, dregmobile
by Squashua
Oct 26th, 2007
10:22:47 AM
The problem wasn't with "the reservists", it's been a solid lack of quality artwork and a persistent need to drag out the storyline unnecessarily. Luthor put together a GIGANTIC villain league and they've really done nothing. I like how The Hood is doing his thing in Avengers, but I hate how long the damn Avengers story is taking. At least it's entertaining while still being dragged out. Can't say the same for JLA.

2. JLA has sucked complete ass since it's relaunch though McDoofie's version is at least slightly less diarrhetic than Mletzer's Personal Exposition League of America. Like most of DC nowadays, the Didio didactism is flushing this title faster than a fat kid on the can after eating a curry-drenched cake.

3. Anyone else under the impression that the 21st century DC is just the 1990's Marvel in disguise? Yeah, me too.

In the preview spread in the back of the issue, it shows a character apparently getting shot in the head. Now while this is supposed to make us fear for the character's safety, it did quite the opposite. Why? because we know Kirkman wouldn't show a main character getting killed in a preview panel, so the bullet must just be skipping off their head, and they are almost assuredly not dead.

Then we get an all-out war, across every book, between the machines and all the heroes. That would be something major that we hadn't seen before. Instead you could have predicted the ending of CIVIL WAR from its one sentence premise. An ending that was actually audacious and surprising would have been Iron Man killing Captain America then morphing into Ultron.
I can't remember if this was a dream or not...

From that 6 month period when Noah and I were separated so we didn't rush into things, I could reestablish myself with (some) independence, and he could find a way to produce airtight proof that I wasn't powered and playing mindgames with him this whole time, from one of our nightly webcam sessions:

N: Hey hon, how was your day?

K: I..well... I lost a plate.

N: Plate? Well, it's no big deal, we can always get more. You didn't cut yourself, did you?

K: No.. I didn't break it. I lost it.

N: Well, ok. Still no big deal. Don't look so worried. Maybe it'll turn up.

K: I don't think it will..

N: Why not?

K: Darkseid took it.

...

...
< BR>K: Noah..?

...

...< BR>
N: Y-you.. How'd he not kill you? More for that matter, why did he have a goddamned plate?

K: He came in search of that four element model that brought me here. Something about the Anti-Life Equation. So I welcomed him in, served him pumpkin bread and mulled cider, and answered all his questions in as a non-verbose manner as I possibly could.

N: That would do it. But..

K: I told him if he ever needed any more insights from me, I was at his service. Anything to not die then and there.

N: Good..good.. Y'know this does nothing for the headgames.

K: I know... And I have to make a fresh loaf now, he took darn near the whole thing. Do you have any idea...
And then as I was telling Riddler's Daughter the other night...

The Brain Trust was having one of their monthly game nights at our place and Riddler brought her along. She asked why for someone who was on the black side of the chessboard I acted like such a goody-goody, and I replied "I dunno. I mean, if you look at it.. I'm a young married woman who obeys her husband and fights so she can get home and put dinner in the oven. Plus, I'm highly intelligent and I kick butt. In this world of forever-single independent cold-as-ice career climbers of _course_ I'm evil!" What can I say? Noah gets me through missions and I _love_ cooking. I draw the line at cleaning and laundry though, since he's home all day.. *shrug*

"Isn't that stuff heavy?"

"It's as light as Stark could make it. Besides, if Tiger Shark sinks this super-sonic Seadoo S.H.I.E.L.D issued, I'm gonna need it in the drink."

"Are you gonna be able to reach the surface with all that on?"

"Don't worry. Once you set the charges, I'll be airbourne."

Why has the one at the paper not updated in weeks? Must I confine myself to writing posts on lonely nights? Must I do other things in newspaper? Must I miss out on all of the big troll bannings? Has my life come to this? Where I may no longer waste time talking about comic books? And for that matter-Where am I gonna get the money for all of the books I want to buy? I guess I can always manufacture more meth... Speaking of which, I heard that the Montana Meth Project has recently gone national-Enjoy suckas!
Buzz, I have a feeling you'd dig Brubaker on CAP...

He was doing pretty much exactly what you're talking about, just with the overarching story of Bucky's return, at least up until the...y'know. I'm conflicted about the death. On one level I can see he's telling what looks like a great story, but on a whole lot of levels killing off continuing characters sucks. I mean, Bru was saying "come back next month for our biggest Cap story yet" and I was thinking "cool! More Cap and Bucky fighting the Red Skull and Sleeper robots and MODOKs!" So I was downheartened at first. The biggest problem with today's writers is that they all want to tell stories that MATTER, rather than just good stories.

What I will say about Brubaker is that he's a good writer in that he takes time to do his research and get to know what he's writing about. He's writing CAPTAIN AMERICA rather than Ed Brubaker's CAPTAIN AMERICA. The man has obviously read a lot of Cap comics, and he's taking most of his cues from the Bronze Age stuff.
