Burton ought to do a straight up drama or something. It ain't a rut anymore when the axels are resting on the dirt and the wheels don't even scrape bottom.

I saw the trailer at the theatre today and it looked very uncomfortable and very awkward. I'm not familiar with the musical - though I'm really intrigued by it. So I hope I just saw either a bad trailer or a trailer that didn't quite click with me.

Sweeney Todd: Covert Musical

Seriously, they underplay the fact that this is a musical so much that it's as if they WANT to leave people in the dark. I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Can you imagine the real horror of uninformed filmgoers after they go into what seems like a gothic revenge story and suddenly everyone breaks into song? Maybe that's the point, I don't know. What I do know is that musical theater geeks are going to be irritated if any songs are omitted, while most horror geeks are probably going to be disgusted by the musical elements. Talk about your word of mouth issues.

That made over $100 million domestic and won best picture. So don't underestimate the campaign to bring people in. Many people are wary of musicals (as AICN will unfortunately prove) so why not?

As far as Sweeney's accent sounding like Jack Sparrow, I think this is a big mistake in hearing. Outside of the fact that they're both British, they couldn't be more different. A mumbling Keith Richards impersonation that had finesse and grace versus a soft but vicious twang full of malice and remorse. Yeah, they're exactly alike.

None of the cast can sing a note. Apparently, Baron-Cohen has to speak his bits, hip-hop style. And Depp is just doing Jack Sparrer again, no question about it. I don't see the point of adapting a famous musical, a good musical with a great witty book, and then casting the same old faces just because they're in every Burton film. Depp looks far too boyish to have been in prison for twenty years, his reading of the famous line 'At last; my arm is complete again!' is woeful and Bonham Carter seems not to have changed out of he Bellatrix LeStrange costume from Harry Potter. Is she going to channel Nancy Spungen again?

I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun, Burton has a way of making these things work, but only on his terms. You either accept his movies for what they are or you really don't like them (Mars Attacks still sucks to me). Still, this only makes me wish they'd make anthology movies more because this looks like it probably would fit right into a 30 to 45 minute segment of a collection of similar stories. And frankly that kind of exhibitionist schlock is right up Burton's alley. He ought to do shorts based on the Edgar Allen Poe stories, and get someone to pretend to be Vincent Price as the storyteller or something. Sigh. It only makes sense in me head! Anyway, I'll give this a look, but that trailer causes me to expect very little.

An anthology Tim Burton movie of Poe short stories sounds like a great idea to me. It would be like 'Creepshow', or 'Twilight Zone', only with one director, Burton, doing the entire thing. That would be amazing.

That Sweeney Todd was supposed to be darkly humorous. From the trailers, it's just looks like a psychological horror movie set in the past. Where's the cannibalism? Where's the snark? Where's the music? Yeah, I know they hint that Johnny sings in one of them but it's just so blah and overdramatic. I'm hoping that they're trying to make the trailers misleading and we'll get the dark humor and music. Either way, Hot Topic has found it's new product!bitch.

ST is at it's core a dry dark comedy. Wait til you hear the song "A Little Priest" If Tim Burton can stick to the source material (which is perfect) even slightly he will have a successful story with great characters. I was hoping, though, Helena Bonham Carter would come off a bit more daffy and less impartial narrator. Hopefully she finds those moments in the movie, because I'm not seeing them in the trailers. Can't wait! Should be great!

Sweeney is a Baritone
by Douche Baggins
Oct 21st, 2007
12:27:28 AM
Death, taxes and Sweeney Todd is a Baritone. While not a spot on "sparrow" accent, it's jacks' cousin at least. The 2 trailers I've seen with and without him singing are not inspiring. Johnny seems to be mugging for the camera with "look at the creepy faces I can make!! I sure am a sexy, creepy guy, ain't I?" I don't get a sense of loss or pain from him in these clips, it's just him trying to look like one bad mutha..shut yo mouth...just talkin' bout Sweeney! And the fact that there's no singing in the INTL clip comes across more as "we have no confidence that the singing will sell one ticket". Johnnys singing in the first trailer was a weak, thin talk/singing. Utterly distracting for anyone who expects Sweeney to be the daunting baritone he should be. Better to throw your money down the sewer...Stephen Sondheim must be rolling over in his grave. In fact, I'm going to call him and tell him that!

Everything his does starts out as dark and spooky and ends up syrupy sweet and disgusting. Winona Ryder becomes a shit-eating schoolgirl in Beetlejuice; the spooky grandeur of Sleepy Hollow is transformed into an anodyne sunshine-y idyll, Willy Wonka is just a little man-child whose daddy didn't wuv him enough boo-hoo and DON't get me started on Big Fish. Burton is a fake.

May have flopped, but I liked it better than Planet of the Apes or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But I'm pretty sure I'll like Sweeney Todd . . . it looks to have all the goods. And bad Burton is better than the best some directors can come up with, and I'm not just talkin' Uwe Boll.
I don't think they're really hiding it...

... since as was noted, the first trailer did have Johnny singing. I liked it too, and wish they kept it. It was very stylized, which I imagine the whole film will be, but it's their vision and I don't see why they should shy away from it now. I really liked this trailer, but my only complaint is that we didn't get a few bars, so tht no one could say they were hiding the singing. From the first trailer though, my complaint was that their wasn't enough razor action. So, maybe the third trailer will be a marriage of the two and it'll be perfect. As for the singing, I'm not sure why they would hide it. "A Nightmare Before Christmas" didn't, *shrugs*.
