stupidly lambasted and underrated because of the growing MTV influence, the atrocious fashion and hair styles, and above all the "homage" from every piece of actual condescending shit trying to hide its shallowness behind pop culture smokescreen (Shrek, anyone?).

A decade that brought us movies like Terminator, Sid&Nancy, Blue Velvet, RoboCop, Indy, EFNY, Blade Runner, Poltergeist, Hellraiser, Evil Dead, Clockwise, A fish called Wanda, First Blood, Batman, Conan (I'm forgetting so many great flicks it's depressing)

Video games? The 80's invented everything. Mario, Zelda, FF, DraQue, Metal Gear, Bionic Commando... The only other equally important period was the rise of the 3D in the early 90's.

Music? Man, the cheap keyboards and overuse of VoCoder were a pain in the ass, I give you that. But for ONE mediocre band like Sigue Sigue Sputnik there were DOZENS of great artists: Prince, Michael Jackson, Naked Raygun, New Order, Public Enemy, Iron Maiden, Queen, Nirvana, The Smiths, The Pixies, REM, Stone Temple Pilots... And I'm not even citing foreign, non-english speaking musicians.

No offense, but calling the 80's the "Worst decade ever" is not only a cheap meme, but rather clueless.

and I find gems of a movie (or a record, or video game) on a daily basis. You just have to look for it.

Hell, if I wanted to be spoonfed by the mainstream media, every fucking year would be the "worst. year. ever". The 80's had a REAAALLY bad vibe, and sewn seeds of real actual shit on a political standpoint, but the false perception that it was the shittiest decade ever makes me wonder if people saying so were watching anything else than MTV, to be so adamnt about it.

by Jor-El23
Oct 18th, 2007

It seems nearly impossible to win this argument because it's all subjective. When Citizen Kane came out no one really knew it would change filmmaking. It took years, maybe even decades, for people to realize that. So with time the 80s could look like the golden age of cinema. Right now it doesn't look like that but as someone who grew up in the 80s/early 90s, I have a certain fondness for all the movies, good and bad.

and I think I'd swap being a teenager in the 60's, 70's, 90's or even the 00's. But being the geek I am, I'd only be swapping the chance to be a geek in another decade. It's not like I'd be some sexed up disco dancer in the 70's or strolling down Carnaby Street like Austin Powers in the 60's.

The 80's did give us some cinematic gems but Christ the music was shit! The alternative scene was a reaction to that but only came about towards the end of the decade The beginning and middle parts were dominated mainly by swill.

I'm with ya on it being too early to call anything from the present decade a "classic", esp when compared with selecting things from the 80's (for which I do have a biased penchant since I grew up in the 80's).

That said, I'd offer up LOTR trilogy as a significant theatrical release of the present decade. No, it doesn't represent "culture" of this decade like, say, "The Wizard" or "License to drive" or "Revenge of the Nerds" did for the 80's, but it does prehaps reflect two things that have come into their own in this decade: amazing digital effects and the omnipresence of "geek" material in pop culture (comics, sci-fi, and fantasy are all pretty much standard fare, if not over-used in entertainment more so now thatn ever. I guess the "geeks' who grew up on that stuff in the 70's and 80's are now in decision-making positions.)

Just my 1.5 cents on the subject....

I was looking at accessories for the Wiimote on Amazon, they have a completely useless sword attachment...all it does is put on an extra 2 feet of plastic, in the shape of a sword, to the remote, but I totally want it. When is LucasArts going to release a Star Wars game for the Wii dammit?!

No indie/alt band today can compare to The Smiths, XTC, Depeche Mode, The Cure, R.E.M., The Pixies, The Police, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, New Order, Siouxie and the Banshees, The Replacements, Cocteau Twins, Peter Gabriel, The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Kate Bush. They're too busy trying to copy their hairstyles then learning how to write great songs. The rap scene today is joke, with more production than actual rapping. If you wanna compare just the crap pop mainstream in general...You can't even find a music video on MTV nowadays. Just a bunch of blonde bimbos and dating shows. This years MTV Music Video awards proved that there was no talent in the room. Their savior is Justin Timberlake? Another in a long line of following the Michael Jackson pop music template. Britney? Nuff said. Kanye West?! Holy Shit. His song "Stronger" is so bad it makes me wish for the shitty days of Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing You. (Another 80's ripoff BTW)" Today's mainstream acts aren't fit to handle Huey Lewis or Phil Collins' jockstrap.

billfro, the dinos are still around
by finky089
Oct 18th, 2007
11:50:30 AM
If you're referrring to the ones in Pee Wee, I just saw them in Cabazon (CA) two weekends ago. They've built a gas station and a fast food joint in front of it and built a "park-like area" around the dinos (it's pretty much desert, so the grass is thin and it's mostly dirt). But the Wheel Inn that you see as Pee Wee runs for the train (there aren't really tracks there) is still in front of the Brachisaur.

When I was there the T-rex was closed to visitors, but the Brach is open and has a gift shop inside. It was a big disappointing to see that this icon of the former Rt 66 roadway is now a shill for an owner who uses it to shout down evolution in favor of "intelligent design", but whatever. it's still amusing to see those dinos in person.

But it's some of the most glorious trash I've ever experienced.

The Wizard is the first movie I actually recall seeing in movie theaters. I was 6 years old and the prospect of Super Mario Bros. 3 was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. For those of you who didn't see it as a stupid kid, well, you won't get it. Because you shouldn't get it. Because for all intents and purposes, it's a TERRIBLE movie.

But one filled with all sorts of fun nostalgia. AND one of the first appearances by Tobey Maguire. Yeah, that's right. He's in some goofy 80s clothes standing around near the end of the movie.

To rediscover her in Rilo Kiley and to see a whole new facet to her talent - especially with Rabbit Fur Coat, as many have mentioned - gives me a whole new appreciation of her. Yeah, I'm crushing on her again. Kind of strange to think about 20 years on. She is quite the definition of teh sexy.

But it was a hoot and a nice little bone thrown to all of us '80s video game rejects. And it had Fred Savage at the height of his Wonder Years fame.

This is pretty cool, Damn you fucking cool Austinites. Wish I was close by or could be there. Yeah, if Jenny Lewis ain't there, I'm a little less interested. I do like Rilo new major label debut. It's sad that MTV is promoting the shit out of Rilo Kiley amid their shitty shows. Rilo Kiley is better than MTV. Fuck MTV, for trying to be hip by making a good indie band virtually a product placement tie-in to shit shows like The Hills, Kya, and that Tila Tequila show. Have fun with "Jimmy Woods" and "Kevin Arnold". It's sad to think you actually will have to ask each of them, "What the hell happened to their careers?"
One more thing!!!

You should get the guy who played "Putnam", and maybe Beau Bridges, and Sam (what's his name) who was the step-dad. Most definately get that announcer guy that was at the end of the movie. He could be the announcer. He could scream "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Frrrreeeeddddd Savaaagggeeee!!!" and so forth for all actors and stars present. That would add some cool points to the showings.

I remember seeing this movie opening night when I was a kid, and they were handing it mini promo copies of Nintendo Power, my first exposure to the magazine. And Jenny Lewis was my second tv/movie actress crush after the chick that played Encylopedia Brown's friend on that show. The movie today doesn't hold up as good in the traditional sense, but it's still watchable if only for the nostalgia factor.

I remember going to see this movie in the theater a long time ago and something about the film has always bugged me. At the tournament, the announcer makes this big deal out of how the final game the contestants are to play is a game "no one has ever seen before" and yet, while they are playing, Haley yells out to Jimmy that he needs to find the warp whistle. Now, how on Earth did Haley know about the warp whistle? They are never mentioned in the actual game, until you find it. No Mario game before SMB3 had any kind of whistles, so how did Haley know Jimmy needed to find them? Granted, there were warps in both SMB1 and 2, so it could make sense that Haley figured there'd be some in SMB3 as well. I just am bothered that she knew to look for something as specific as the whistles. Anways, that is a minor obsession about the movie for me. I had no idea that the girl who played Haley was indeed the singer, Jenny Lewis. I have to admit, I had a crush on her back in the day as well and that whole scene, with her saying the guy touched her breast, always stuck in my head for some reason. The movie was not really that amazing and I know it was all just a big promotional tool for SMB3, but it is a part of my childhood so I am happy to leave it as that. And Jenny, if you're reading this... call me. ;)
No, call ME Jenny

would bring me to Austin for sure. And since I live in the Yukon it's about as far as I could possibly go. I saw her play with the Watson Twins in Seattle last December (opening for Death Cab) and she almost stole the show. Amazing presense, hard to take your eyes off of her. Especially since her guitar was bigger than she was.

Love that review on Collider.com "The audio is Dolby Digital 2.0, which will do in this case. When the “Beau Bridges is going to fuck up the bounty hunters car because he makes money off of little kids” cue blasts through your speakers, you won’t have any complaints." I loved the hell out of this film as a child. "And to top it all off, this is the first film to employ the "twist ending" pioneered by M. Night Shyamalan. When you find out why The Wizard wants to go to California it will blow your mind." "Caaal-uuuuhh-forn-yaaaah."
