Hellboy SMASH!!!

Oops wrong character. Either way the first film was pretty generic. The comics are so much better, its too bad they had to turn hellboy into another film instead of directly translating the comic to screen, that would of made it much more unique.

I LOVE THAT HELLBOY IS AN UNDERDOG character of sorts in comic book canon but the filmmakers are making him kick Superman's fucking ass into space/depths of Atlantis. THAT GALLERY KICKS ASS. LOVE THE COLLABORATORS WRITING ABOUT THEIR SKETCHES, NEED TO SEE THAT MORE OFTEN STUDIO EXECS!
Yes, take a look at the Gallery of Concept Art, here's why:

The "Golden Army Chamber Concept Art," doesn't look a THING like the egg chamber scene in ALIEN. Nope, not at all. Totally different. 'Cause the eggs are, um, Golden. Yeah. And there's no foggy mist. Or John Hurt either.

66m + Marketing = 75-85 million at least. You can cut the 99 million boxoffice in half as there is a 45-55 split between theaters and film company. Cut more of the take if more than one company was involved in the production and distributon...lets not forget the backend deals for the directors, writers and....yes it was a money loser.

I could listen to his geektech talk for an hour once a week to be sure. I like that he's going back to HB after the success of Pan's. Most director's would think it was beneath them I think and a step backwards which is incorrect. Does anyone else think he would be the perfect director of a live action THE GOON? By the way, I respect all of you.

I hadn't read any of the comics. I was impressed with the original (except for the lackluster finale) and was doubly impressed by Pan's Labyrinth. I highly recommend the direct to DVD Hellboy cartoons. They are surprisingly high quality. I have even hunted down some of the comics.

Sorry to say it, because I like everyone involved with that project, but I thought the movie was just pretty dumb. Stupid dialog and boring action scenes. PAN'S LABYRINTH of course is genius and maybe they created a better story this time. I'll wait for the reviews on this one. Oh wait...all reviews for the first one were good as well. Hmmm.....now I'm confused.

That fucking bright X-Men lighting was the absolute WRONG way to go and totally did in the feel of the original comics. Half the comics are SHADOWS! You could see everything in the movie. From the looks of it they are going the same route for the second one. The only way to do Hellboy justice is through a stop motion feature.

... people start dissecting box office returns just to prove their "point" that a movie was bad FOR THEM. Do we really need to repeat for the billionth time that in the grand scheme of things (i.e. movie watching, movie critiqing, movie history) B.O. don't mean shit? Look to BLADE RUNNER for one of many examples. Anyway, no studio would be greenlighting this if the first one didn't make money when all is said and done. And that's the end of you...

Now we all know that most sales happen in the first week of release....so lets say they sold 3x since then....and again DVD sales aren't all profit so its still not making money.

Thanks to some slick money transfers that took advantage of the fluctuating exchange rate between the Dollar and the Yen, HB's Box Office in Japan more than made back the production cost of the movie. The rest of the world's revenue was cake. I can't wait to see this movie. I hear they plan to actually use a brand new form of currency to report their earnings called the Hell-Buck. There will be no exchange rate between Hell-Bucks and dollars because of draconian U.S. laws against coining money. In order to change a Hell-Buck to a dollar you have to change it to Canadian dollars and then convert through the mafia's laundered U.S. Sacajawea dollars. They've actually already made a profit on this one so HB3 is a sure thing. Which in my mind makes it an artistic masterpeice sight unseen.

"The 2004 live-action film grossed $60 million at the box office -- a solid performance, but hardly the blockbuster success that usually inspires an animated television series of its own. Only healthy DVD sales ('Hellboy' doubled its grosses on disc versus its theatrical run) are what granted it at least one more chance at a long and profitable second life."

Did you read that? HELLBOY DOUBLED ITS GROSSES ON DISC VERSUS ITS THEATRICAL RUN. Grammar school math puts the DVD sales for Hellboy at around $120 million. Now give it a rest.

It's strange really. I only liked the first movie; I didn't think it was amazing. Despite that, I really can't wait for this sequel. Pan's Labyrinth was so good that I think del Toro is upped his game considerably.

thats the way to promote a movie. del Toro is taking this beyond anything ive seen in the comics, or in the first film. Mignola is just one part of a team here...and the guy "with eyes like a crazy kid" is in charge.

I remember that he released the production art for Blade II early on as well. It's nice, because you get to see some cool stuff, but without context it still keeps you guessing as to how it plays in the film. I didn't particularly care for the whole love triangle thing in the first film, but I like Ron Pearlman enough that I'll give anything with him in it a view. He was cool in his short bit in "Enemy at the Gates" - and I think the French "La Cité des Enfants Perdus" (City of Lost Children) must have inspired the game Bioshock on some level.

but I didn't get into the first movie. Del Toro got a lot right (Hellboy's look, Rasputin, Kroenen, Abe, digging up the corpse to use as a guide), but the demon dog, long- tongue things were just too generic and un-Mignola (shoulda stayed with the frogs from the comic) and the humor felt really flat to me. I really hope the second one is better.

I enjoyed but didn't love "Hellboy," yet "Pan's Labyrinth" floored me. On many levels. It's one of the most powerful, astonishingly well-made films I've ever seen. Therefore I'm excited to see what Del Toro cooks up for "Hellboy II."

The production sketches look great.
