I reckon it's his voice that let's him down. He's got the looks but to me his voice lacks the gravitas of a movie star. It sounds too weak and boyish.

Sure the technological stuff was unnecessary and the gay bit at the end came out of nowhere, but both Caine and Law do a pretty great job. I think your perception that Law isn't on the same level as Caine is extra-filmic; looking at the performances solely in this film the two manage quite the balancing act. Law delivers the snappy dialogue every bit as well as Caine does here, and really that's all that the script asks of him. Law is perfect at the end of Act I, and throughout the whole film his role is the more difficult one. The script asks more of his character than it does of Caine's throughout the whole movie. Obviously, Michael Caine is the better actor given his past performances, but I don't think it's fair to weigh that against Law here.

Here's hoping we never have to see him onscreen ever again. And Jude Law, I agree, he's a supporting actor at best.
Branagh has never made a watchable film in my opinion.

It's interesting you say "Branagh directs the living shit out of the film, in that way he always seems to do", because just as he's a terrible, tone deaf over-actor, Branagh is also a tasteless, ham fisted over-director. Sounds like this is no exception. He uses surveillance cameras as his way "into" the story? 1993 called, it wants its lame gimmick back.

Couldn't agree more. His entire career is a puzzle to me. Running around your actors with a stedicam isn't good directing it's stuck for ideas. Maybe he doesn't do that anymore but that abomination Frankenstien has it in spades.
I'm of two minds about Affleck...

I just really don't like Affleck as an actor. I know he's had some all right roles, but I just can't take much of him onscreen. But, tabloid fodder aside, I feel like I do like Ben Affleck himself. I think he's been great when he's showed up on SNL, and in interviews I like the guy. I just don't wanna watch him trying to carry a movie. It's surprising that he may actually be a good director. Oh, and I also appreciate that fact that he seems to stay connected to the city he grew up in. As a Massachusetts-ite, it's great to see another movie focusing on Boston. It makes me wonder if The Departed was the start of a run of filmmakers setting movies in Boston. Even if I was from Tacoma, Washington, I think I'd like any hint that sometimes we can see a movie that doesn't take place in New York or LA.

we get to see 1 of Eva Mendes' boobies when Joaquin pulls down her bra to and proceeds to stuff his face on it. And while not exactly nudity, we get to see Eva rub her cootch for a while and then we see her slide Joaquin's hand down there and she then makes "sounds".

Okay. I'm sick and tired of these misleading commercials. When they put the date at the end it's either just the date, or "in theaters everywhere" or some other nonsense that makes me think I'll be able (in a smaller city with two multiplexes) to see the film on that date. I'd really appreciate some honesty. So how about from now on they just say "coming to a theater near you in the next couple months, maybe". I've been waiting for that damn Jesse James movie for over a month. It's been punished and has gone to the end of my priority list. As sucky as WE OWN THE NIGHT was, at least it came out when they said it would.
sleuth failed in the final act

Sleuth was interesting up until the third act when it all comes crashing down. The first two little "games" were pretty interesting, the last was desperate as if they didn't know how they were going to resolve the situation, as if the filmmakers had no exit strategy.

Also, making the acting theatrical was a bad idea, I was constantly distracted by the unusual responses, the pitches of their voices and the delay or lack of was weird and unusual. I guess that's what they were going for, but it they didnt pull it off.

Also, why the hell did Michael Caine use the Mac remote control for things in his house and it made a zappy noise? Did they not think we'd notice it was a Mac remote? And was the zappy noise for the older people who loved the original not understanding technology, therefore the zap was to tell them that it was electronic and activated stuff? Nit-picky, but still, it was irritating since he was zapping everything left-right-and-center the whole movie.

Ask Frank Darabont if "Kenneth Branagh directing" is an endorsem

What was done to Frank's Frankentstein script was one of the big heartbreakers of the last several decades, and Kenneth B. cocked it up on two fronts: directing and acting. The script was a marvel, dramatic and moving and potentially the best version ever. But between Ken B. and Jon Peters it was fucked - and for all those who wanna say they "thought it was pretty good": you should read Frank's script.

I'm sticking up for the guy. I liked Peter's Friends, Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing and in fact I don't think I've seen any of the other movies he's directed so when I single those ones out for praise I'm not saying the others weren't up to scratch or anything. So there. That's my vote, just so's you know. I'm looking forward to Sleuth. Pinter and Caine are Gods to me and I'm a fan of Jude Law. In my opinion he's definitely a leading man. Shit now I really want to watch Breaking and Entering again, might have to see if it's in a sale next payday. When you say the acting was theatrical do you mean like Closer? People really slagged that off for the way the characters spoke but I really dig that sort of thing. What's this need for everything to strive for surface realism? Surely that's a dubious journey to a dead end. I'm going buy a ticket. The reviews have mostly been bad, I know, and I usually find myself in broad agreement with the consensus I suppose but hey ho.

All I can say is read the Kenzie/Gennaro series by Mystic author Dennis Lehane (Gone, Baby, Gone is the 4th book in the series). They are phenomenal stories and this is my most anticipated movie of 2007.

His acting career was exactly like the title of his directorial debut so this is great for him. If this means one more solid filmmaker is getting into the mix all the better for us.

I know, I know – Ben Affleck's accepted some really bad roles in his career. I'd list them, but I don't want this to turn into a novel. The thing is – he openly admits that he has made some bad choices. I think the measure of a man can be found in how honest he is about himself, and Affleck has no hesitation in admitting his career wasn't going in a direction he was happy with. Taking a year off, getting out of the spotlight, then choosing to direct a film with a very serious subject matter is exactly what he needed to do in order to get his career back on track. I admire the guy. Reading back what I just wrote, I think Britney Spears could stand to take a page out of Affleck's book in terms of handling her life and career.

When will people realize Mark Wahlberg has the depth

of a piece of paper? I just don't understand the love this guy gets. There's more to acting than reading back lines. Nothing I've seen him in rises above that. This guy, to continue with the paper analogy, really is a blank page up there, monotone and all.

I haven't seen the script from "The Departed" but I imagine it looked something like this from Wahlberg's performance in it:

SSGT. SEAS DIGNAM
(angry)
You're A Loser! Get Outta My Office! (throws something in anger, sulks a bit)

Please, anyone, prove I'm wrong. I think the only movie of his that got my (rental) money was "Boogie Nights," where 5 minutes by Thomas Jane blew away anything else Wahlberg did in the rest of that film. "Three Kings" too, I liked what Russell did with that film. Not "Huckabees," though. That was atrocious.

Don't feel sorry for Ben. He sure took the money to make all tho

And no love for Jude? The dude is a brillant actor! Considering the dipshits they trot out there these days for leading men and you give Law shit? Please. Is Orlando Bloom better? Is Paul Walker? Is Ryan reynolds? Is Ryan Phillippe? Is Josh Lucas or Matthew McConaughey? Ashton Kutcher or the other dipshit from American Pie, Stifler? I could go on and on but there's no point in it. Compared these clowns with Jude and he's Brando! Go back and watch Talented Ripley. He blows Damon off the screan. Hell, he steals the show from everybody in that one and four of those people have won Oscars! DAmon, Gwyneth and Phillip Hoffman and CAte Blanchett have all taken home the statue.
