Superman Returns sucked. The viewing public didn't like it. And it's understandable, because they "re-imagined" (the worst concept to happen to entertainment in the last 20 years) Superman as a creepy, morose dead-beat dad.

Singer had his chance and he blew it.

and keep telling Supes, "Tell me about Jenny!" As much as I was disapointed with SR, I am willing to give Singer one more try. I tried watching SR again the other day on HBO, and say what you want about style, about homage, about whatever. SR committed the ultimate sin of any movie and that's that it was BORING - plain and simple Stamp returning as Zod is a million times better than that rumor of Jude Law up for the part. I just hope Zod returns with Non...and URSA! Holy shit, was she hot!!! I always wished it was Ursa who decked Lois, and told her, "You know something? You're a real pain in the neck!"

it's freakin' superman! the action scenes in superman returns were unbelievable, but i want something even bigger in scope for the next go round. i think brainiac seems to be the obvious/correct choice to be the villain. although this stamp/zod idea is very interesting, maybe it would better be used in a possbile 3rd film, maybe getting set up at the end of the sequel.

I'd watch Batman and Robin again (shudder). Speaking of which, living in Sydney was friggin hilarious during the making of Superman Returns. Singer was a regular visitor to a notorious gym around the corner. Some of the crew had some pretty funny stories. They also had some pretty eye raising tales of a certain N Kidman during the filming of a certain red movie of a couple of years back that kind of demolished her carefully cultivated image - but that's another story :-)

As a big fan of the first three movies I at first liked the idea of the Singer Superman movie leaning so heavily on what Richard Donner had done. But in the end I had to admit that Superman Returns really let me down. So that's probably the most important reason to go ahead with the new movie I think. Bringing Zod back seems very interesting though. Zod is human now and must probably rely on high-tech armour to beat the Man from Steel. Sounds very much like the confrontation between Batman and Superman in the Frank Miller comic about The Dark Knight. High-tech versus superpowers. Sounds like a great story!
Superman Returns - A Great Film, Worthy of the Greatest Superher
by Kal Reeve
Oct 12th, 2007
04:11:27 AM
"Superman Returns" is a soulful, majestic film. But several aintitcool regulars who are quick to tear into it for being slow. I am willing to wager that these regulars are same people who panicked when Bay and McG were considered as potential directors of the film. These regulars were scared that either of these directors would render the World's Greatest Superhero as a hollow muscle-head at the head of a souless action extravaganza. But they reacted with scorn when Singer delivered a thoughtful film that delves into Clark's lonliness and longing to be accepted once again by both his true love and his the people of his adopted planet. This was a beautiful, lyrical film. And let's get a few things straight. First, Clark was not portrayed as a dead beat dad. He did not even know Lois was having his son. And he certainly was justified in searching for Kryptonian survivors. It is heroic to save all lives, even ones light years away. Second, he was not stalking Lois. Clark had been away for half a decade, and of course he was anxious to find out how the love of his life was doing. And checking in on her at her home was clearly the only way he could find out about Lois' life. She was not giving Clark the time of day and was angry with Superman. It was his only option. I will concede there are a few problems, primarily Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane. She would have been a perfect Lana Lang, or even Supergirl, but she had no business portraying the sharp, gutsy, brassy, yet sweet and sensitivie, Lois. She was completely wrong for the role; Rachel McAdams, Selma Blair or Evangeline Lilly would have been far better choices. In regards of Routh...well...I cannot imagine any current actor delivering a performance more true to the Man of Steel. For me Christopher Reeve was, is and always will be the one and only Superman. However, Routh did a worthy job in honoring his cinematic predecessor and the iconic hero he portrayed. His performance reflected the nobility and humanity of Clark Kent/Superman. And with that, I could not ask for more.

Superman Returns sucked. Admit it. It was about Stalker-man and anorexic Lois and their love-child. The action had no dramatic tension (superman is indestructible, after all) and was poorly staged. While I liked the spirit of sticking with the FAR superior Donner films, in truth, Singer fell short by miles. This despite the fact that Routh was actually perfect for the role. It was the one thing I thought that would go wrong; instead, everything else did. Spacey sucked and so did the script and directing. I'll give Singer another chance, but he screwed up Returns. There is no dispute.

Whereas the Donner original soared this Superman had clay feet. Everything about this movie sucked. I get a sore head just thinking about it. If you were to display Hackman and Spacey's Luthor performances side by side Spacey would be so embarrassed he would retire from acting. Routh and the rest of the young cast were horribly bland, the Superkid idea is one of the worst things i've ever seen at the movies...the whole thing made no plausible dramatic sense. Total and utter bollocks.

I just lost any interest in a SR sequel. Unless they kick Singers ass off teh project and give it anyone with an original idea, or even someone who will use one of the numerous other villains in teh Superman universe. better still think of a new one!!

I should say, at this point, that Brandon Routh is welcome to stay on as Superman. He was pretty fucking good - it was the movie that sucked.

An Act 3 that had the hero unconscious in the back of a Cessna, flown by his romantic rival, with his love riding shotgun, while they outrun a HUGE FUCKING WAVE??? That is so NOT what the climax of a movie should be.

As much as I love Stamp as Zod, the problem with (well one of the problems with) Superman Returns was that it was too closely involved with the Donner/Lester films of the '70's...and this just proves it. I mean Singer revamped the X Men to his own needs (did a great job with Rogue until the third film missed the point of her ENTIRELY....theres a rant there thats desperate for air but....another time) but why cant he put his own mark on Supes? I have no problem with him keeping the music, but Jesus Bryan man, you can build a franchise on its own legs, ya dont need to have Spaceys Gene Hackman impression, or have constant comparisons to Chris Reeve....just get Brainiac or something we havent seen already in. Thats all I ask...theres a good set up for him already...just say that when Kal-El returned TO Kyrpton he met Brainiac and fought him, assumed he was defeated and thought not to tell anyone incase they'd worry. OR even better say he didnt meet Brainiac, that he followed him to earth and engages him as an ally, and a mentor to teach him of his home planet before Brainiac betrays him, whips his ass good and starts to infect the worlds computers. But Zod? Great in Superman 2 but Ive seen that already, I dont want to see a remake of it a few years later.

People will indeed think that Synger is remaking the old films... in a less exciting way, if Im so dare as to say that Superman Returns, although I liked it, was way more boring than the Donner original (wich I absolutely love). The should try and bring some big villains (Darkseid, Brainiac), broaden the scope of the film and make the action more exiciting... At the end of Superman Returns, i couldnt believe we didnt see Supes punching somebody... I want Superman to fight, bare knuckled, with some big dude... If I wanted to see a movie about a guy lifting big things, I'would watch my own porno tapes...

So then Superman Returns picks up with Supes...having abandoned his duties for five years?

Stamp is doing the voice of Jor-El in Smallville so I can see this rumor being true, but I hope not. I agree with some of the folks here Singer should have done a Superman re-boot not following in Donner's foot steps. I really did not like the movie because it was just a copy of the original. What pissed me off most was that even the dialogue was the same. AHH !!! Don't get me going. The next movie should have a whole new villain from the Superman universe and Braniac would be good. Let's just hope Singer does not fuck it up as he did with Returns.

I also have some of my attention span left in that I don't watch a lot of television, I play about one or two video games a year, and I actually read books! Enough of me being flippant, because as much as I liked the original I thought it could have improved on a few things. It was in the shadow of the original movie and Bosworth was terrible in it. That being said, I liked the aspect of the kid, it's a new element we haven's seen before.

I Don't Really Have a Problem with Zod

06:14:39 AM
Coming back, if it's a good movie. The fact that Luthor was in SR didn't have to make it boring. It just was boring. Bryan Singer knows how to do a good movie, and got one thing right in Superman Returns that I think he didn't quite nail in the X-Men movies--fangeeks got to see Supes use the full range of his powers. Which was cool, and done well. I liked the added bonus of Superman getting off on his fame. That was good. Lex Luthor with another real estate scam? Not so much. Plus the scam itself was tedious and stupid, not nearly as cool as Superman: The Movie. Whether it has something to do with Singer being gay or not, his female leads are all wrong: Parker Posey is great, but not as Lex's moll. Kate Bosworth might be good in something I haven't seen yet, but she was a horrible choice for Lois. And, good golly, the pasty long-stringy-haired superkid? Jeeze. Cuts against the superman ethos, for me. Oh, and losing "the American way" . . . "truth, justice, all that stuff?" Come on, Singer.

On the positive side, Frank Langella was a great Perry White, Sam Huntington was a pitch-perfect Jimmy Olsen, James Marsden was a great Perry White nephew . . . Cameos by Jack Larson and Noel Neill much appreciated. It certainly had its moments, it just didn't quite gel. The whole superkid thing was not compelling, but then Kate Bosworth as Lois was so underwhelming . . .I'd like to see if a Superman: Man of Steel hits the mark, this time.

Oh, and the soundtrack doesn't do it for me. Either they should have brought John Williams back, or done it from scratch. The homage sound track is so full of "see, those five notes were the same, but then I changed it at the end, ain't I clever?", and the variance and original music is so non-John Williams, it's distracting. But I gave SR a chance (and was dubious about Routh, but I think he nailed it) and look forward to the next one. Zod or no Zod. Though I do agree that Braniac or Darksied or possible a large cloud of energy would make a better bad guy than Lex Luthor again.

Listen, I liked SR too and I understand why Singer made such heavy reference to the Donner film. But now the time has come for Singer's vision of this franchise to step outside of the original RD films and make its own movie. That means a new sotry, with a new villain and a completely new feel. He's already reset the 'universe,' but it's time to expand it now. That said, give me Jason Issacs for Brainiac!!!

Gozu ... actually you've highlighted the problem with the Superman franchise which is he doesn't really have any standout villains apart from Lex Luthor. The problem with Darkseid, Brainiac and Doomsday is the complex backstory and the fact that they're actually quite boring characters. Compare this with Batman and the myriad of interesting villains in his mythos and suddenly you realise why Superman ends up battling Nuclear Man.

supes is my fave character BUT is well indeed of updating. the suit for starters. the film was a chance to start from a fresh, a re-imagaining of krypton, the suit & the fortress. this could have crossed into the comic book. more sci fi adventure than fantasy demi god. i enjoyed returns but feel singer has mde it all the more complicated, kids/lex still a doofus etc etc. alas, give it 15 years and we cab start again.

They're going to bring in Chris Tucker as a computer hacker that creates a program that takes all the fractions of a cent his company rounds up and deposit them in a secret account. He will then be forced to create a supercomputer powered by kryptonite to try and defeat Super-Routh. Tucker does this while yelling to Supes if he understands the words coming out of his mouth. Contact with meth-laced synthetic kryptonite splits Super-Routh makes him have a beer and cheat on Lois. A fourth sequel (in the tentative stages) will bring in Seth Rogan as a mad scientist to create Bizzaro, which Super-Routh will fight on the moon. The laws of physics will be ignored, as both will breathe and hear each other speak in the void of space. All the while, Supes will try to rid the world of dirty bombs by collecting them and throwing them into the sun.

(Well, the music made a great return, too.) Despite my HUGE disappointment with "Superman Returns", I'm (at least) curious about a sequel. However, if they don't return the Superman costume to the widely accepted RED AND BLUE design (yellow "S" on cape), then THAT will be the FIRST sign that this project is in trouble. Hell, just scrap the project and absorb it into "JUSTICE LEAGUE" and act like "SUPERMAN RETURNS" never existed. Give us the REAL return of the RED and blue Superman (while returning Brandon Routh).

..the first movie was overlong, talky, sappy, and devoid of action. HOWEVER just like star trek, the sequel COULD be the supes version of WRATH OF KHAN, with Stamp filling the same role that Mr. Rourke did (previous villian returning for vengeance), with lots of action and great characterization. We can dream, right?

... And use Darkseid as a villain, with maybe Ugly Mannheim and Morgan edge as his flunkies on Earth. I've been watching reruns of Superman The Animated Series on Disney and that whole Darkseid story arc rocked, especially the episode Apokolips Now! (Which they haven't shown yet on Disney) Use some influences from that story and from that massive throwdown Supes and Darkseid had in the last ep of Justice League Unlimited. I loved that line Supes had about always having to watch himself and feeling like he lived in a world made of cardboard... but that now Darkseid gave him an opportunity to really cut loose! Just the sonic vibrations from Supes and Darkseid's punches were knocking down buildings in that fight! That's what I wanna see in a big-budget superhero movie, kiddies!

No matter what brain-dead shitheads like "blueballsboy" think. This person who reported this bullshit probably heard them "joking" about it, seeing as Singer's narrow exposure to the character draws from the Donner films ONLY. So let the Singertologists THINK there will be a sequel. Those of us with an IQ higher than our shoe-size know BETTER.
No Zod
by Playhouse
Oct 12th, 2007
08:34:50 AM
There needs to be no Zod in a sequel to Superman Returns. If there is, that will just lend even more creedence to the idea that Singer has no originality when it comes to Superman and is just copying what Donner did. I happened to like Superman Returns but I can see the issues people had with it. (I will never condone bringing a kid into the mix. Bad move.) I happened to think it was a smart move to base the movie in a filtered continuity of the Donner films. As much as people gripe about it, I think those movies - and Christopher Reeve - are about as definitive to the character as anything. So I liked where Singer was going. Returns wasn't flawless by any means. And a sequel could give Singer a chance to really shine with the character. But bringing Zod back in would be a tremendous disservice. I'm already not keen on having Luthor back. Bring on Brainiac. Bring on Darkseid. Bring on something we haven't seen before.

The show has done wonders for attemptng to modernize the property (to an extent), and doesn't soley exist so whoever can rehash the Donner flicks, or Star Trek, or whatever, but dammit, THEY HAVE TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER, because right now it's pure shit. I didn't know going in it was a full on re-make, I thought it was a new take with a flavouring of the original like the casting of someone who looked a lot like Reeves was about the only thing that worked and worked well. Please let the sequel be as well produced and visually solid but don't just do a re-tread of Superman 2 with zod and the gang etc WHAT'S the Point!? It's entertaining to read how people love to trash things. But although mister Singer may have misfired with Superman Returns, I still think he's one of the most talented directors in Hollywood. He doesn't play it safe. With or without Zod or Brainiac - I think he pretty much listens to his fans and has learnt from the criticsm on Superman Returns. Less Donner, more Singer, something new and a lot more action: I expect Superman: Man of Steel to be a goddamned masterpiece. Go for it, Bryan!

Zod, Ursa and Non recover their powers in a freak incident and they break out of the Earth jail. They kill people! Meantime, Routh catches up with Teenlois and sacrifices his powers to spend the rest of his life with her (and the Superdiaper). Then the trio invades... NOT the White House, but the UN Headquarters. (Don't worry, the UN HQ is still in the US, so it's a good film location.) Kevin Spacey shows up and promises Zod that he can help out - in a shocking twist, he demands New Zealand as payment. Marlon Brando, photorealistically restored by amazing new technology and then obscured by five walls of ice and a cloud of smoke, shows up and gives Routh back his powers. Routh fights the trio until they chase him into his Ice Fortress... but there, he simply tricks them... AND WINS! Roll end credits. "Original story" by Brian Singer. "Screenplay" by The Two Guys That Also Had The Credit For The "Screenplay" In 'Returns'.

maybe they'll "Hulk" it-just revamp with a smaller budget and less hype in a few years time and pretend the first one never happened. I actually thought SR was okay but with gaping flaws...and the potential for a definitive Superman film (drawing from the entire vibe of the comics, the darker elements, making notes on the animated show and utilising all the material availible etc) seems to have been wasted there. I mean Nolan is sticking to a definate mood for his Batman flicks but at least his acknowledges a range of source material to get it from (Long Halloween, Year One The Man Who Falls etc) instead of "well, I loved Tim Burtons version so...Im gonna copy that". Jesus, I mean even Peter Jackson ranted about his love of the original King Kong but his remake wasnt exactly carbon copying things from film to film!

... isn't because of following Donner's universe. They now painted themselves in a corner by having a love child. Any sequel will HAVE to follow up with that stupid storyline, and it will be a burden. A soap opera version, to say the least. Whether Supes will be fighting Zod, Brainiac, or a giant spider, he will still have to face the paternity suit. A great earth-saving fight only to be interupted with this sappy father/son stuff. 10 to 1 odds that the kid buys it in the end of this sequel -- saving the day or what have you -- and Supes will have a revenge motive. Goddam Hollywood cliches.

I didn't enjoy the fact that Judi Dench was M in Casino Royale. Mainly because I don't remember Q inventing a time machine. It made no sense. In this case it would also be pretty damn stupid to include Stamp. Think about it. This Supes looks a lot younger than Reeve was, even if he's relatively the same age. But then Stamp is like what, 30 years older than he was? And looks it. Nope sorry. The only reason I want to see a sequel is because I think Routh makes a great Superman, but they really have to get it right this time. Because that SUPERMAN RETURNS was an abomination, imo. Especially the kid.

Problem with SR

09:52:14 AM
For one I hate the idea that Supes just slept with Lois once or something in the previous Donner film... I don't fucking buy it, I don't even think Donner implied it and however you feel about casual sex I never pictured Supes to do that, you don't get that feel from the early comics or films so this just doesn't follow. I mean it's one thing to do something different with a character, but this was just friggin awkward. I don't even see how it added to the theme of Clark's lonliness or Supes quest or whatever...

Also Superman returns was heavily lacking on action. First and foremost we EXPECT a good action superhero film... Sure be sentimental and whatever and all that it's all good, but come one... we wait a long time for an updated superman film with all the FX wizardry and we don't get ANY action payoff... that's just friggin disappointing. The superman videogame commercials looked more exciting! All he did was lift shit, which is fine and iconic but c'mon... Sure those of you who liked it may like sentimental character introspective films and I also think Returns did that aspect well, but that's not all I want to see from a Superman movie... When I think Superman I think about him kicking some ass too! In fact that's the first thing I expect! You can have both! And this film only had one, and it picked the more boring of the two!

Are you telling me that Bryan Singers last Supes effort was new and original? Have a good read at the opinion of other TBs postting here. You'll find that there are more then a few people who would agree that the last movie lacked any form of originality and brought us nothing new. This didn't build on Donner's vision, it just replicated it, and made it a little duller in the process. If the speculation about bringing Zod and Lex back as the main protagonoists AGAIN for part two of Singer's Superman is true, then it's just the same old thing with a better effects and less soul. I love the character of Superman. I just don't think Bryan Singer has the balls to move on. I want Superman to be, well...Super. the last film copied plot points and structure of the original. It was an imitation of Donner's film with better effects. I'v seen Superman battle Lex Luthor. I've seen Zod. I want something new for my cash. WB should insist on the same.

Sorry I was a bit shocked by your post, Sorry im just in the middle of humouring some douche called Kal El Vis. But yeah I agree thats not how things should work but then again I dont consider Superman Returns to be a bad film, quite the opposite in fact, I thought it was great, but I do think as great as it was there where certain things that should be built on and ramped up for the sequel. I think we have had our re-introduction to Superman, certain things have been set up, Singer has struck the balance between what needed to be new and what could be re-used from the other films and now is the time for a sequel that can break new ground, and I cant wait for it to happen.

"Several" AICN regs are posting hate, huh? The film was shit. Superrouth couldn't act to save his life. That alone would have been enough to kill the movie. But in addition, we basically get a remake of Superman 1 except the fine performances of Reeve et al are replaced with a league of truly Super-shitty performances from Bosworth, Spacey (whose supervillain name should have been "did-I-really-sign-this-contra ct-guess-I'll-railroad-the-mov ie-with-my-ridiculous-performa nce-man") Kal Pen, Routh, Supe's mom, Perry White, and Jimmy Olsen. The only likeable character was Marsden's, whose character is far more of a hero than the emotional cold-fish stalker and wife snatcher from another planet. Singer should have just copied and pasted scenes from S1 wholecloth. Why is frikkin KAL PENN beating up Superman? That's ridiculous. And Routh gave the worst performance I saw that entire year during his would-be tear-jerker speech to Superbastard. My God, man. Get out of acting immediately. Maybe I should go lighter on him since that speech was ridulous and hammy from the very first word... the script as a whole is only slightly better, whose only shining points were ripped from the S1 movie thanks to the Screenwriters/Singer's masturbatory obsession with Dick Donner. Oh yeah, the suit looked absolutely awful. Looks like they took evil-Superman's costume from S3, took it to a tailor and said "I LOVE these shitty drab colors, but I was wondering if we could make this suit about 82-87% gayer." It's distracting.... kinda like the crap non-Williams music that wanders in and out. The movie was GIANT FAILURE in my estimation, and I wish it was never made, because it taints my image of other, worthier Superman projects (and even the lesser ones. I liked all 4 Reeve films FAR better, and yes I'm talking to you Richard Pryor and Nuclear Man). This movie made Superman a deadbeat dad who abandoned Earth, stalked his ex, tried to take another man's woman who even Lois wouldn't wait 2 months for. Hopefully in the next movie Superman won't stare into people's private lives. That's gross.
Bad idea.

At the end of Superman II, the producers promised "Coming Soon: Superman III." It has taken 26 years for that promise to be fulfilled. To be sure, there were movies in the 1980s called Superman III and Superman IV, but those were bad jokes masquerading as motion pictures, unimaginative stories cashing in on a pay-day. These many years later, Bryan Singer has gotten it right. In fact, Superman Returns is not only a credit to the first two Superman movies; it may be the best of the series. Its combination of romance and fantasy adventure is unparalleled in superhero comic book-to-movie sagas. What differentiates Superman Returns from the average superhero movie is its focus on the love story between Superman (Brandon Routh) and Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). If you think Mary Jane and Peter Parker are star crossed, they've got nothing on this couple. Of course, the Lois/Superman pairing has never been simple. Clark Kent has always been lurking around. Now, there are further complications. With Superman having been away from Earth for the better part of a half-decade, Lois has moved on in a big way. She has a son, Jason (Tristan Leabu), and a boyfriend, Richard (James Marsden), although she resolutely refuses to marry him. Maybe it has something to do with the man of her dreams. Some may not appreciate the amount of screen time devoted to these characters and their romantic interaction but, for me, it provides balance. Suddenly, Superman Returns has more to offer than a megalomaniac seeking world dominion -although it has that as well. When last we saw Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), he was played by Gene Hackman and was off to prison. So, like Superman, he has been out of the spotlight for a while. He's "yesterday's news." Once free, however, he is more determined than ever to make his mark on the face of the globe. He visits Superman's Fortress of Solitude and pilfers all the crystals. With these, he intends to create a new continent and destroy a few of the old ones in the process. Superman, newly returned from a futile outer space search for other survivors from Krypton, will (of course) oppose his old nemesis, but this time Luthor is ready for him. Revenge is a dish served cold, with Kryptonite icing. Superman's return to once again aid mankind may be short-lived. Gone are Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman. It's a credit to their replacements that they're not missed, at least within the context of the film. Brandon Routh channels his predecessor, although his version of Clark is a little less gawky. Kate Bosworth provides an altogether different take on Lois - a sexier, more modern view. She's prettier than Kidder, and there's more chemistry in her scenes with her co-star. Kevin Spacey's Luthor is cut from the same mold as Hackman's, except he's more cruel and less flippant. He has his share of one-liners but, when it comes down to it, he doesn't waste time with drawn-out monologues. That's when he's at his most brutal. There are no miscasts to be found in the supporting cast, either. Parker Posey's Kitty fills the function of Miss Teschmacher - Luthor's female stooge who has a soft spot for the Man of Steel. James Marsden, following director Bryan Singer to Metropolis from Professor X's school, has the tricky role of playing the foil in Lois and Superman's romance without coming across as a jerk. Richard is a nice guy. Eva Marie Saint plays Clark's Earth mother, who gets to find her son and almost lose him again. The only returning cast member from the original Superman is Marlon Brando, with archival footage recreating his limited part as Jor-El, Superman's biological father. For those who go to superhero movies for the action, rest assured there's plenty of that. While the extended climactic sequence is the movie's longest and most involved, I was partial to the rescue of a space shuttle and airplane, which heralds the Man of Steel's return to his adopted planet. It's a great moment, filled with tension, and topped off with top-notch special effects. Visually, Superman Returns offers the kind of upgrade one would expect after a quarter century layoff. This time, you really believe a man can fly. Composer John Ottman puts his ego aside and gives John Williams' original music plenty of play. Singer provides us with a blast from the past with opening credits. Not only is the music 100% Williams, but the lettering nearly replicates that which was used in Superman and Superman II. There are other unobtrusive homages to the first two films, from Lois' spelling faux pas to Luthor's love of maps. Singer may not be a fan of the Superman comic books, but his affection for and knowledge of what Richard Donner brought to the screen is evident. Superman Returns clocks in at a fat 157 minutes, but I hardly noticed the passage of time. The movie had me enthralled from opening to closing. One could easily argue that Singer used his time in the X-Men universe as an opportunity to hone his superhero movie skills. Superman Returns is near the top - if not at the top - of the superhero movie pile. It offers nearly everything: romance, action, humor, and plenty of goose bumps. For Superman, many happy returns. © 2006 James Berardinelli

That piece of shit was so terrible, I threw up a little and it left a better taste in my mouth. The worst part, was that it would be SO EASY to make a decent film, but Singer is so fucking gay, he has to make a film literally sucking Donners cock. Don't you have any vision? Can't you figure out a new direction to take the earth's greatest hero? And people that think Spacey was good as Lex, we will just never see eye to eye. He was terrible, he's a good actor, but not for Luthor. Maybe in some elseworlds gay Metropolis he was a good Lex, but not in the continuity I know. Maybe that's what I missed, this was a different reality and everyone was gay, that makes a lot more sense. Zod is cool, we all know that, but wouldn't you want a new villian? One that Supes hasn't beat down already? Darkseid, Brainiac, well, he doesn't really have many other good villians. Fuck Singer, I can't wait for this franchise to reboot in 10 years.

Pictures Official Web Site She never could spell worth a darn, but Lois Lane has gone and won a Pulitzer - for an editorial headlined, "Why the World Doesn't Need Superman." Considering Lois', ahem, history with the Man of Steel, this might seem hypocritical, but he did fly off without saying goodbye at the end of Superman II. He's now been absent for five years - he was on the hunt for chunks of his home planet, Krypton - and Lois has gone on to other things. Hooked up with a nice boy (James Marsden of X-Men). Had a kid. Won that Pulitzer. Snap on you, Superman. The title before us is Superman Returns, however, so we know what happens. Mr. Hot Pants isn't back long enough to find an apartment in Metropolis (where alter-ego-butterfingers Clark Kent labors at the Daily Planet) when he's called upon to rescue Lois on a jet that's coupled to a malfunctioning space shuttle. Kazooming through the atmosphere, Superman handily hefts aside the shuttle and catches the jet before it nosedives into a crowded baseball stadium. The fans roar. As well they should. Superman returns not just to theaters but to form: He's as spiffy and hunky and true as he was when Christopher Reeve first donned the bitty red Speedo in 1978, and if he seems a bit more puppyish than he did then, the new look becomes him. Director Bryan Singer — who helmed the first two, superior X-Men — has found a Reeve look-alike and almost-sound-alike (not quite as nostrily) in Brandon Routh, but he's also found and roused the pulse of a fading franchise. I'm relieved earlier efforts to update Superman, Batman-style, into an angstier superhero died, because an angsty Superman is no Superman at all; updating him is like trying to bake Twinkies with aspartame. There's the square jaw. The steel-plate chest. The impermeable black helmet of plasticine hair. Super-de-duper strength, super-de-duper ears (to hear the cries of suffering people or, short of that, office gossip), super-duper eyes to see through walls and crush advancing bullets. He uses this awesome skill set to fight way-bald evildoer Lex Luthor, whose scheme to grow a new continent made of Kryptonite should yield much wealth for him and a bad case of dropsy for Superman. Kevin Spacey plays Luthor like he's making love to him, his buttery menace wrapped in a Gatsby wardrobe. As Miss Lane, Kate Bosworth is less of a tough nut than Margot Kidder's proto-Lois, who wouldn't have been caught dead eating veggie wraps with the family. But I enjoyed Parker Posey as Lex's dim floozy and Eva Marie Saint in an itty-bitty bit as Clark's human ma. I also enjoyed resurrected clips of the late Marlon Brando as his biological dad, Jor-El, who correctly asserts, "By now I will have been dead many thousands of your years." Is this a more modern Superman? Yes, it's set in the 24/7 global village, and the computerized visuals are astounding: Superman has never flown so artfully, believably or fast. But he hasn't changed from the upright, overgrown Boy Scout of yore, though his knickers do ride lower on his hips. Singer has made a film that honors its subject to the point of reverence. It may move a little slowly, it may dwell a little much on Superman's levitating, backlit form, and it may criminally waste Kal Penn. But you know what? The boy in blue is back. The world needs him, all right, and it should welcome his Return. amy.biancolli@chron.com

Singer's super hero movies

lack emotion, which is sort of a problem since super heroes are exaggerations. We have higher expectations of super heroes, they tackle tougher obstacles, they fight bigger battles, their kindness and self sacrifice towards earth/humanity has no bounds, they perform tasks that we morals dream we could accomplish etc. Similarly, the antagonists are the exact opposite. We despise them more because they have a greater capacity for evil and do greater damage then normal criminals, they have no remorse, etc etc. The Hero genre should be approached and handled differently then conventional movies. So when these character perform their heroic deeds, our adrenalin should be pumping and we should feel like we want to jump out of our seat. Yet, I never felt those emotional highs or lows with X, X2, or SR. There were moments when tensions would rise and all but they never actually went as far as they needed to go. Those movies were "good" but not what I think what they should've been. It could be just me though.

He looks as bad as the horrible Zemeckis mo-cap animation. Why they felt the need to use a computer generated face instead of Routh's is beyond me. All I know is, it looks awful. A boring, over-made movie with (1)Disasterous Casting (Lois), (2)Bad writing (if you have to change Superman into a peeping tom in order to get the emotional cue you're looking for, you've basically changed the character to suit the writer's purpose - that's BAD WRITING), and (3)not one once of FUN throughout the entire 2+ hours. That movie should have had non-stop joy in it - instead, it was non-stop angst and depression.

They should just do it animated. Not CGI, I mean Bruce Timm style. I mean, I rented THE BATMAN SUPERMAN MOVIE, and even though the animation wasn't stellar (especially the Joker) I was shocked how much better, more creative, more energetic, etc. the script was. Supposedly a kids' movie! And direct to video! But dammit -- EVERY blockbuster is a kid's movie, for marketing reasons. At least that was a DAMN GOOD one. And remember BATMAN BEYOND? Neither do I (I only saw one good episode, the Mr. Freeze one) -- but the DTV film BATMAN BEYOND: RETURN OF THE JOKER was a kickass awesome flick. Why the hell don't they just grab Bruce Timm & Paul Dini and have them do an animated SUPERMAN feature where they spend a little more money? And if those guys don't want to do it, get Dwayne McDuffie. (He wrote all those great episodes toward the end of JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED's run.)

the problem is singer doesn't understand comic books, much less understanding the post superhero deconstruction world of comic books. these type of exaggerations have been explored against the black and white world of DC where heroes kill(wolverine) yet they dont become the monsters they kill, and the villains in the real world are far far scarier and worse than those in a comic book, regardless how much more damage they can inflict. A story arc like The Slavers in the Punisher makes this known. A brainiac might be scary when he is trying to siphon the world but a remorseless eastern european mobster who deals in sex trafficking is much more scarier.

I've read every weekly Superman comic book since 1994. "Superman: Action Comics," "Superman: The Man of Steel," "Superman" and "The Adventures of Superman" - I've read them all on a weekly basis since Reign of the Supermen and consider myself one of his truest and most steadfast admirers. I still read the books - "Action Comics," "Superman," "Superman Confidential" and the brilliant "All-Star Superman" - and buy every book outside of his own titles that he appears in and Superman action figure that DC Direct releases. So trust me, I know and love Superman. Yes, I whole-heartedly Superman is a dynamic hero who deserves a film where he battles the evil might of Darkseid or Mongul or Brainiac (I got goosebumps watching Superman actually PUNCH Non in "Superman II: The Donner Cut"), but "Superman Returns" was not that film. It was a film about feeling alone, but ultimately learning that you are indeed loved and needed. And the love and trust from human beings, especially Lois Lane, is vital to Clark. And I'm not going to address your "stalker" remark, because I completely justified that scene in the post you responded to. As for the bank robber, he's a human being. What did you expect, for Clark to nail him with a haymaker and cave his head in? If that's what you want you need to realize that that's not Superman. Clark arrived just in time to stop him from killing the guards and prevent him and his crew from flying off in the helicopter. But rest assured that "Superman Returns" is the perfect set up for an epic, action packed sequel. And that I am anxious to see.

The downfall of the first was that they cast too young. I'm not sure with Stamp. I'll have to see. But he also might be too young.

If people mocked the resurrection of Indy, Rocky, Rambo, McClane, etc in their elderly years, then how are people not going nuts about Zod? Do people forget how old Stamp looks these days?

For making the X-films, which were frankly mostly mediocre. He blanded out Superman too. What's next? Three hours of Superman saving an oil tanker, hiding his identity from Lois and his son (zzzz) and watching her and Richard White renew their vows? Then he flies around a little, threatens Kevin Spacey, the end? Singer can be an amazing visual stylist but HE HAS NO VISION FOR
