A show about a corrupt police force? I've grown tired of that subject. Maybe a character will get mad at another character who won't take part in their ill-gotten gains and "play the game" like all the other cops. And he'll be hated because he thinks he's better than they are... etc... etc...

Now that DEADWOOD, ROME and SOPRANOS are dust, HBO has churned out nothing but shit. Big Love fucking blows. John From Cincinatti was dead on arrival. Flight Of The Concords was a lame Tenacious D clone, and Curb Your Enthusiasm is like watching Goldblum lurch around the lab begging Ronnie to put the shotgun to his bulbous eyes! Weeds, Dexter and the best new show of the year Californication have been simply astounding in both writing and directing. David Duchovny better get a fucking emmy for Californication...Oh and Milch has expired. He could have gone out strong with finishing Deadwood, but fuck him he can go suck a bug! BOCHCO'S
by Napoleon Park
Oct 11th, 2007

Bochco's Hill Stret Blues, Cop Rock, NYPD: Blue and Brooklyn South were all the same show. Milch's run on NYPD Blue was pure video poetry, but him doing a new New York Cops series isn't him finishing what he left off when he left NYPD Blue, it's him running with Bochco's idea after Bochco used it four times. Sloppy fifths.

We cannot fault him for making a cop show out of unoriginality. His last two shows were as we all know, Deadwood, and JFC, two of the most unique shows to air on TV in the last few years. Deadwood was excellent, the most deeply layered western to be put on screen. John from Cin, on the other hand ultimately did not succeed, comercially or otherwise. However, it was still interesting, and I commend Milch for trying something new. Whether or not his new show will hit the mark, I will watch with anticipation and interest, as we know we can expect something interesting.

HBO VS Showtime
by Nabster
Oct 11th, 2007
07:19:06 AM
It seems to me HBO shows are far more cerebral, serious, and generally darker. Which is also maybe why many of them have failed, as the HBO shows are far more ambitious. Showtime does make good shows, however, Showtime does not even attempt to make challenging and shows such as HBO. HBOs shows atleast attempt more than mere entertainment, while Showtime appears to make more user-friendly shows. Sorry I will not allow people to claim Showtime is even on the same level as HBO, as much as I like Dexter, Weeds, and Californication, I am reminded off far superior shows such as Rome, Sopranos, and Oz. Granted two of them are off-air, but the brilliance of the later shows is unparalleled.

. . . for "Californication." The dialogue alone on that show puts it miles and miles beyond 99% of the drivel that got pushed on us as the new fall television season. "Chuck," "Pushing Daisies," "The Bionic Woman" - none of these shows even come close to the genius on display with Duchovny's sour hangover of a series, perfectly mocking the SoCal "boho" lifestyle. "I love women. I have all their albums."

...oh wait, never mind, I canceled HBO last week, not a moment too soon. I had subscribed to HBO pretty much my whole adult life, precisely because they were the only place to find shows that weren't boring old cop, doctor and lawyer shows. Just when the other networks have finally learned to start moving away from that crap, HBO fucks up once again. HBO has really come full circle in the shit storm and it's gonna take them another 5 - 10 years to pull out of it. Every exec working there desperately needs to be fired by the board.

Did Californication get better after the first episode or would you fans say it's of the same quality? Weeds, season 3 has been kind of lame. I still love the show overall, but if it keeps up its slide from S1, I may not after S4. Are any of the characters even connected to each other anymore? I'm rewatching Dexter S1 before starting S2 so I'm hoping they maintain the quality level there. S1 was easily on par with anything HBO has had.

HBO vs. Showtime
by toshiro-solo
Oct 11th, 2007

I've been giving Showtime every chance to win me over, and to be fair, they've done an OK job - Weeds is pretty good, and Dexter is better than good. That said, nothing that I've seen is GREAT in the same way that HBO is at least still attempting. Deadwood, Sopranos, Six Feet, and most especially The Wire are just on a whole other level. And yes, I know that the HBO shows I've just mentioned are all done airing or will be within six months, but - I'd say that HBO has earned some trust from this viewer. I still enjoy Big Love quite a bit (even if it's no Six Feet), and Curb is still funnier than most of everything else on TV, and Tell Me You Love Me is pretty damn good too, so there's still plenty of reason to be watching. I guess my overall point is that HBO > Showtime. Not to say Showtime's bad, it's just not as good.
Milch then vs. Milch now

When Milch wrote the Deadwood companion book, he was so full of passion for these characters, the Wild West, the language; now he sounds like he has ADD, jumping from one show to another, without finishing anything. He should just say outright that he's done with Deadwood or that he wants to definitely finish it before he goes on to the next project.

They have already said they are re-evaluating Preacher. Translation, they aren't going to produce the show and don't' want to say it just yet.

HBO does this shit. They knew they were never going to make the Deadwood movies but just said they were to buy time expecting us all to just forget because The Concords is so fucking bitchen. NOT.

Showtime is becoming the new HBO. They are now nipping at HBO's heels now and in a few years will be pushing HBO into the corner. Between Showtime and FX HBO might just become irrelevant in a few years. Serves the cock sucking hoople heads right.

Don't forget Brotherhood
by BackRiverCatfish

Brotherhood is a really great show and even though I missed the entire first season I was able to catch up pretty quickly and still be able to enjoy the show. I keep hearing people say the show is a cross between The Sopranos and The Wire and I think that’s fairly accurate description of the show, although I think its a little closer to The Wire. Brotherhood is just another example of why Showtime is quickly catching up to HBO in the quality of their shows. If HBO keeps putting out crappy shows like Tell Me You Love Me, which is basically soft-core porn without the interesting plot, then Showtime and is actually a lot closer to equaling or even surpassing HBO.

Brotherhood Doesn't Excite Me...
by _Maltheus_
Oct 12th, 2007
08:36:31 AM

...but it is a really good show. I actually feel the same way about everyone's favorite, The Wire. The have very similar feels. The Wire has better plots but Brotherhood has fewer assholes. Haven't started S2 yet (or S4 Wire) but I'm looking forward to them both even if I'm not on the edge of my chair.

Actually, I also really like the Tudors. But then, I'm a sucker for period pieces. It's not Rome and I don't give a shit about spoiled royalty, but it's well done and it's from another time, so I'm in.

Interesting...

I hope it's about a corrupt police force in the 70's. It would be great to see that instead of the usual squeeky clean tv cops but if your going to do that then have it take place in New Orleans about three years before the flood. New Orleans is widley known as the most corrupt police force in the country but not as corrupt as the corporate land developers buying up the place right now.

I can see the movie's opening now: a map of Deadwood burns up as the theme song kicks in! Yes, with the town of Deadwood in cinders, the newly-refurbished Cartwright ranch is now a combination hotel/dry goods/whorehouse/printing press, and it looks like the boys got a game of faro going on in the barn! And if you believe in a woodless Deadwood movie, I've got mining rights to buy off you for a ball of dope. Something tells me this new cop show will open with a promising story about a Serpico-type idealist, after which Milch will get bored and spend the next eleven episodes focused obsessively on gruff but lovable cops-on-the-take learning to bond while sitting in lawn chairs in the parking lot. Keep your eye on the sparrow out there! Cheeeeeep!
