uh huh. BPRD is a fantastic read. Between it and the new Hellboy series, I gotta say Mignola has bloomed into one of the greatest comic writers today. And, with Guy Davis on art, it increases my chances of one day owning some of his original comic art.

Well, it's not as if we write them. I actually made similar remarks to the guys a few days ago: it was not a great week for comics. But DETECTIVE was good. Or did you simply mean that the things discussed as "good" were simply not your cup of tea?

That ATOM book had a great cover at least. And I gotta say I disagree about HOWARD THE DUCK. Bobillo's art is a winner as always and I love his designs of Marvel characters (I think he's the only artist who can make me laugh out loud purely from his art), but where was the story? MODOK shows up at the end - so what? He's been way overused for laughs recently. The whole thing was way too simple and nothing clicked enough to get me back, besides the art. And the VINYL UNDERGROUND just read like a computer programmed edgy Vertigo book. London setting, magical hijinks, cool weird characters, all very uninspired.

From the Wikipedia entry OMEGA THE UNKNOWN seemed very similar to the original version, which was my main problem wit' it - we're getting remakes of comics now? I haven't read OMEGA, but from the Essentials Steve Gerber is one of my favorite Marvel writers of the time, so maybe I'll pick up the trade...hopefully Buzz will come and fill us in...

And this AICN upgrade has massacred the comics section! Not only are the last few talkbacks missing, but older columns get cut off after a few paragraphs. Yes, I am a fan as well as a reviewer...I'm the Gerry Conway of the @$$es.

The original Omega was better, in my opinion. I bought it off the rack, many years ago, shortly after the wheel had been invented. The way that James-Michael lost his parents was much more poignant, and the robots were cooler. Jim Mooney (the artist on the original) had a great way with facial expressions, if I remember (I don't own them anymore).

I really don't see what this new incarnation is adding to Gerber's work, or really redefining. But I HATED the way it was tied up in DEFENDERS years later. Maybe this one will end better.

Omega & Howard

Considering what a fan I was of the originals, I will have to check out these new incarnations, the first comics I'll have bought in about a year.

OMEGA sounds a lot like the original, a concept so delicate that ONLY Gerber could handle it. He didn't write the coda in the DEFENDERS, which is why it sucked. I think enough time has passed, and if there are differences, they may be desirable. The main thing about the original was that an innocent teen character died from a gang beating. The beating happened off panel but the aftermath was fairly graphic, and therefore, effective. We saw the result of the violence, instead of the violence itself. Also, Omega didn't talk the first few issues, which made it hilarious when old time villain Electro kidnapped him, because Electro talked like Stan Lee on a six-pack of Monster.

If anybody can do Howard justice, I'd say it's Templeton. Check out his BIG TIME graphic novel. Les Big is Howard in human form.

The Howard story sounds great. Duck hunters.

But, for me, as key as Gerber was, the art for Howard was equally important. I'm not sure who drew Howard's first stories in MAN-THANG, but Val Mayerik initiated the series. His art worked, but Gene Colan really took ownership of the character. A cartoony duck in a detailed, well defined, semi-noirish comic book panel really drove the ridiculousness home.

And Howard should smoke. C'mon, Marvel Joe. I'm sure that some kid -- like kid's even read comics any more -- is gonna say, "Y'know, I wanna be just like the cartoon duck. I'm ditchin' my pants and taking up cigars."

The older columns will be fixed.

That issue of DETECTIVE was the first absolutely useless issue in Dini's run. To keep the characters straight, I could've used footnotes. The purple hooded dude was one of Darkseid's minions? Really? Whoopedy-do. Who was the cartoonishly-costumed dude on the float? No, not Deadshot. The other one? Catwoman had a sidekick who now wants to be left alone? Who knew? Who cares? It is always a bad sign when Batman only appears in the epilogue of his own book. Just so you know - Harley Quinn isn't interesting unless she's a foil for Mr. J., and The Riddler is unreadable unless a riddle is involved. Amazon women's clubs, indeed. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Well, see, there is this thing called "other comics books"...
by rock-me Amodeo
Oct 10th, 2007
02:03:39 PM
...and DETECTIVE referenced them. So here's your footnotes: SECRET SIX was a mini-series written by Gail Simone. The other card-based costumed crazy was called "Ragdoll" and a few months ago, Harley was a part of that group, but it didn't work out (see the last few Simone-penned issues of BIRDS OF PREY for details, if you wish.)

And Holly stood in for CATWOMAN for several issues before moving to the spotlight of one of the major COUNTDOWN arcs. It's, like, this whole other comic book. Really.

As for the minion, I also could care less. I only knew he was a Darkseid minion because it seems impossible for anyone to draw him without the Kirby-esque hair.

I don't take offense, so don't read this the wrong way. But I will point out, this technically isn't Batman's book. It's called "DETECTIVE," and it featured a detective story, one that I found well done as it was not immediately guessable and visited several characters for whom I am fond.

So I don't think I was completely off base in my praise. Just because something is not understood doesn't make it stupid. Truly, stupid is in the eyes of the beholder.

And yes, kinda nuts. Guilty as charged.

the whole idea was that he LOOKED like the Disney ducks. that was the point. not this baggy eyed chicken/pigeon hybrid. the story was OK but the art took away from it. I didn't mind Juan Bobillo on She Hulk but it didn't work for me on this book at all

Yeah, Realistic Art Makes Howard Work
by Buzz Maverik

Gene Colan was one of the true greats. Anybody who has read TOMB O' DRACULA can attest to that. His DAREDEVIL looked more realistic than Miller's. He had a very realistic, detailed style. Lots of shadows and depth, a 3D quality, really only exagerrated for action scenes. Mr. Colan's Howard and Howard's strange friends and enemies capered through a very real looking world.

I'm sorry to hear about Mr. Gerber's health. I know he's suffered from sleep apnea since his Marvel heyday. He's truly gifted. Plot, character, dialogue, humor. Gerber can do it all.

I still remember the all-scripted Howard the Duck issue, where there was just big splash pages and type-written paragraphs. I don't own it anymore and haven't read it in probably 25 years, but I still remember laughing at "I am strong, I am invincible, I am woman, and not a dutch elm." Oh, yeah, and the showgirl who became one with her headdress, ascending to goddess-hood (and the lampshade died.) Even then, Gerber had such a strong grasp of the absurdities of trite comic book plotlines, poking fun at stuff that few had even realized were overused concepts.

That Issue Is In ESSENTIAL HOWARD THE DUCK, Rock

HOWARD, by the way, is one of the best Essentials. Even people who aren't big fans of the format or can't stand black and white have told me they like ESSENTIAL DUCK. The prose issue was collection of what were probably Gerber's private essays on comics that were used as a fill in issue during his move from NYC to Las Vegas in the 1970s. It was very cool. As always with him, very different. Very ahead of his time.

Really?

I wondered what all those little magazine-type things were, adorning the shelves of the Batman store I go to to get my weekly Batman stuff. I'd been tempted to open one or another of them to look, but they all look so stupid with their gaudilly-colored pictures of musclemen in tights on their covers.

"It's called "DETECTIVE"

I think even Agatha Christie would have the good sense not to set a "detective" story in a woman's spa run by Amazons.

What mystery, exactly, required detecting herein? Seems to me "immediately guessable" and "easily resolved in one or two panels" are close enough to merit a giant "meh."

So, stand by your praise - (good for you) I'd hate to think I were able to sway anyone - I'll stand over here waiting for next month's issue and a better story.

I mean, getting warmed up while reading the latest from Sinestro Corps War (and pumping your fist even more wildly when they go "Let's save the universe") and then hitting Booster Gold and being on roughly the same level of inebriation as Mr. Carter at just the same time? It takes the experience to a whole new level. Really. (and it wasn't even Herradura, just a very good glass of pinot grigio)
