The past few years have been pretty shitty but the show is slowly getting better. They just need to trim down some of the cast bringing them down and get more new talent in there. A lot of the new additions have been really good. but one of the main problems is in the writing. A lot of the skits start off with funny premises but fall apart midway or the closing is abrupt and awkward.
Does anyone know if the unrated Knocked Up DVD

includes the regular version with seamless branching? I'm still pissed about 40YOVirgin. Loved the film. but instead of being a 'director's cut' that one was basically just the second-last edit. They just trimmed those scenes so the pacing worked and viola! Theatrical cut. Why they couldn't use basic dvd technology and give us both is beyond me. I'm not going to buy Knocked Up if it's the same thing. I'm all for director's cuts, just not "here's our almost-finished version".

The only reason they are 'unrated' is they include footage not rated for the theatrical release. There's no hardcore Heigl action, just scenes that were deleted for a reason. The 40-year old virgin was ruined in the DVD by adding an extra 15-20 minutes to a movie that was already too long. I assume the same will be the case with Knocked Up.

more of a lisp now with age. Its amazing how much what you look and sound like contributes to whether you're funny or not. Its not just timing and writing. Thats why so many, including Chevy lose something with age. Time changes them just enough so it doesnt quite work anymore. Gotta give love to Spoon though even though Brit messed up in the middle. Im from Austin and have known those guys for years. Great Pop Rock if youre into that. Im in New York next weekend! Is it impossible to que up for SNL tickets? Anyone? He could teach the two current anchors a thing or two about delivery. He got some laughs out of bad jokes, made the bizarre ones seem natural (which made them even odder), and some of the "thinker" ones hit. The two saps they have doing Weekend Update now would have grinned like idiots and maybe shake their heads a smug self-depreciating way. I call it Jimmy Fallon Sickness.

Seriously, this wasn't earth-shattering comedy or anything, but its the kind of stuff I've always loved about SNL when its 'on'. Just little short bursts of inspired lunacy. Actually Chevy's Delivery was Correct
by Larry of Arabia
Oct 7th, 2007
12:06:41 AM
While not perfect, Chevy found a way to sell the jokes. They were not great but he managed only to outright bomb on just one or two. He focused on the funny, and not acting like he was above one if it didn't get a laugh right away. Rather, he did something to get a laugh anyway. That's why the current group, with the exception of one or two cast members, bomb so often. They are more interested in selling themselves when everything should be in service to the joke, even the ones that bomb. Rogan seems to know this, so do Sandburg and Hader. The rest, like I said earlier it's Jimmy Fallon sickness.

MACGRUBER! I'm glad they had that - MacGruber has been one of the underrated, but best continuing skits of SNL lately. It has continuity, but they have a way to make it new each time so it's not just repetition (like the painful Penelope sketch). I didn't get Chevy Chase's jokes, for the most part, but it could have been the transitions. And FRAGGLE MOTHERFUCKIN' ROCK! Excellent! One question - what happened to the Robert Smiegal cartoon?

douches when SNL has kind of become a douche show itself. Other than the Digital Shorts, there is nothing really creative going on anymore. The good (Armisen has talent, Kristen Wiig, and Forte get some laughs) just can't outweigh the horrible (Keenan and his horrible impressions,Jason Sudeikis just kind of shows up every week, Weekend Update, and when was the last time there was a funny opening monologue?) But I'm the real douche for watching it every week.

01:20:30 AM
Uneven to be sure. But compared to last week's completely laugh free episode, this had some quality things. The Douchebag sketch was very funny and I think could have been even longer. The Macgruber bits were pretty funny but should have been spread out over the show. Update had a few really strong jokes. Much better than their usual lately. Chevy was a nice addition. Even though some of his jokes just seemed strange, he had a few great ones. You have to give the man respect. He's Chevy. The Muppet sketch was great. Loved it. But where was Floyd and Dr. Teeth? But at least it was good silly fun. The rest of the show, not so much. That sketch with the kids seemed to be stretching to make new characters but they didn't really do anything. Same joke over and over. Still, if they can make a few more shows like this this season, then I'll be happy.

* Hader, Wiig, Forte definitely. * I would add Jason Sudeikis to that list as well.
* Armisen loses points for me based solely on the horribly unfunny Nuni sketch they keep dragging out again and again.
* Samberg's shorts always hit, but his live stuff is hit-and-miss.
* Hammond serves his purpose, which is usually just playing a central character off of whom the others can play, much like Phil Hartman did (though Hartman was obviously far superior)
* The worst? No contest: Kenan Thompson - how is he still on this show?
* I could also do without Maya Rudolph - annoying and unfunny.

only two god laughs so far. The dorky kids and the book written by the Pope's cat during update..."Man In White Hat Who Feed Me". The Muppets thing had potential if only they went with a joke and not a "Family Guy"-esque nostalgia kick for the sake of nostalgia. THERE WAS NO JOKE except for the fact that they were spitting image of Dr. Teeth's Band! And that's not even a joke! That's a costume party. Even Spoon seemed like a nostalgia kick to the past. That fucking song sounded like sub-par Billy Joel. Fuck! How dumb do you have to be to write on this show? And poor Chevy... he seemed like he was struggling through the pitty, and again, nostalgia laughter.

Although I miss the first SNL cast, and standouts along the way like Murphy and Hartman, many of the current cast members do well if the WRITING is good - even Keenan has some great expressions if he is allowed to do more than play drag or some 10 second Al Sharpton bit... And Wiig - she is amazing but I think they are going to run her exaggeration woman character (this season's anwer to Lovitz's Liar) into the ground... With all the competition to get stuff on the air, it is amazing how so many duds make it - stuff that is neither interesting or funny - it's pitiful when the only things that brought laughs in our house were Armisen's Gene Simmons and Wiig's "I said WE"... Oh, and Chevy was doing those non-sequiters and straight line without punchline back in the 70's... For those of us who've been around - seen it.

I remember one time when Dennis Miller screwed up a joke on Update; he apologised right then to A. Whitney Brown for bungling his joke. That's class, admitting you made a mistake and being contrite. But then again, maybe Myers wrote the joke he blew so there was no one to apologise to.

You are right on the money. I only ever watch the show when there is a decent host, but Hader could make me a regular viewer as long as they give him something to do. I like Sudeikis, but he was so much better on "30 Rock" I would rather he would just stay there. Amy Pohler is hilarious as part of the Upright Citizens Brigade, but is floundering on SNL. Kenan sucks, and I've never liked Hammond. Kristen Wiig should be allowed to be hot on the show. Now that would make me a regular viewer.
