I have got to see this movie ASAP. Tom Jane is so kick ass, and that kid ,I swear, he seems seriously scared to death. Damn, how could anybody think this movie is going to be bad? Mr.King has to be excited as all get out.

To every book King did at one point. King is in love with the guy and would let him direct his families home movies if he could. I know for a fact he was attached to The Mist, The Stand, and there were talks about him doing Cell for like a split second. Anyways, can't get enough of this movie already.

Tom Jane WOULD make a good Roland
by Vespalad

03:22:26 PM
My personal choice for Roland would have to be Gary Oldman, though. Jane is almost too pretty-boy for the role...don't forget Eddie calls him Long, Tall, and UGLY. That's one of the things I DON'T like about the Marvel DT comics...Jae Lee made Roland too pretty-boy for my tastes. I can't wait for the next series, which actually contains NEW DT material and doesn't just re-hash what we already know. But yeah, the Mist is going to ROCK!!! It's the first movie I've been excited to see all year.

by HEADGEEK
Oct 5th, 2007
03:40:51 PM
From what I've heard - Darabont has been directing the visual effects companies to make the CG less photo-real and more like a Stop-Motion creature - sort of like the CG in MARS ATTACKS! We'll see how it works in the context with the film.

See the clip entitled 'We Want The Boy?' Yeah, we know the first thing slightly unhinged Christians would do whenever the going gets tough is fall back on human sacrifice. It's been so long since I read the story that I don't remember if that's in there. If it is, nice work King. He's made a living on that particularly tiresome trope, hasn't he?
Bad CGI...seriously.

03:49:03 PM
That just looked cheap. The bugs looked okay. The spider, eh. But those tentacles? Lame. So freaking lame. And the "stop-motion look" excuse doesn't work. It wasn't the motion that made the tentacles look bad, it was how completely fake they looked. Apparently, the artists need to learn a little thing about light and shadow. God, I hope those aren't finished effects. It looks more like a Sci-Fi Channel original movie.

i like how the kid bonks his head on the door as he's getting dragged out. reminds me of that time when star wars was cool and did not suck, and the stormtrooper hit his head on the blast door. good times. anyhoo, that scene was absolutely laughable. didn't make it through to the rest.

I love this idea that if its in the movie its gotta be in the story. In the story the woman was kind of a cross of being religous and backwoods superstition. It was not a slam against Christians.

Darabont's a skillful writer/director, I'm sure it's going to deliver the goods in terms of it's performances and the creep factor, but that tentacle clip looked like it was rendered and comped in a day. Hope that retrograde CGI get's some tweaking before release.
Tentacles
by Ironmuskrat
Oct 5th, 2007
04:25:28 PM
Not to prejudge the movie too much but the tentacle SFX was just plan bad. But even worse is the scene went by too fast. In the book the tentacle attack was one of the more intense moments in the story. In the Mist the kid is slowly dragged out of the dock door while everyone is trying to pull him back. After a struggle the people trying to help the kid realize they can't fight the strength of the tentacle and the poor kid is lost screaming and kicking into the mist. There is a real sense of foreboding after the attack that what is happening isn't going away and everyone in the store is basically screwed.

I don't know why either as I'm usually the first to get annoyed at shit effects but the atmosphere is all there and then some with a great cast and story and I've been watching the old Superman A LOT recently as my kid's obsessed with it and don't mind the shit effects in that because the rest is so solidly done so maybee that's why!? Anyway looking forward to this and couldn't watch anymore after the tentacle as i dont want to spoil it all and the video player took ages to buffer and was jumpy as hell.

I don't think they should be playing key attack scenes BEFORE THE MOVIE OPENS. This has become a real shitty way of marketing. Why not just dump the whole movie online? And again, I hate the CG.

Bugs and spiders: these were the creepy animals from Raiders and Indy 2. Perhaps Darabont want to show us something in an implicit way. Tentacles will be the creepy animals in Indy 4!!!?? I know, it's a cheesy theory.Hope I'm wrong actually. "Indiana Jones and the Heritage of Gods", would have been THE great title (you know, the notion of Indy's legacy, stuff like that)

Every one of Stephen Kings doomsday-scenario type stories features an old uptight religious woman who rants and raves about sinners finally getting what they deserve until someone either hits her or tells her to stfu. It's as common a Stephen King staple as the black 'stepinfetchit' character. Come to think of it, almost all the characters in Kings books are recurring. The late 20s reluctant hero guy, the wise old woman/shaman, the smart alec asshole who doesn't know when to shut it, the disabled guy who makes a surprise sacrifice, the kid who seems more level-headed than the adults, the teenage sorority type girl, the crazy old doomsday-saying bible thumper, the black stepinfetchit, and usually there will be a washed up musician in the mix somewhere.

That's just what I predicted months ago because that's EXACTLY how I felt when reading the book. When the Mist is just a strange ominous mist enveloping them THAT is cool, but it quickly turns into a run-of-the-mill seen-it-all-before story about bugs and tentacles and characters arguing and running out like idiots so they can be the next one to die. Could have been so much better without the creatures.

Tim Daly, since they use him lots in Stephen King adaptions. But Kurt would own if they got him to loose about 30 pounds. He's the right age now. Right eye color, man his eyes are perfect and he's a freaking stellar actor. So Kurt it should be!

I'm Christian, and fundamentalist Christians are most deffinitely pretty whacko, sometimes. Now, do I think they are all the cardboard cutouts that Stephen King makes them out to be? No, but there are most deffinitely a bunch that are. Still, King can't help it, I suppose: the man hasn't written a character that isn't a mediocre cutout or retread of previous characters in years. Well, with the exception of Lisey's story, I suppose, but even then, the climax was almost entirely ripped from Rose Madder, wasn't it?

Am I the only one who liked it? Been years since I've seen it, but I remember it being fairly faithful as an adaptation and being reasonably creepy. At the very least, I'd say it doesn't belong on the list of truly awful King adaptations.

To be fair to King (and to most of us Christians), he usually depicts, not so much Christians but religious lunatics as his villains. The definition of a religious lunatic would be one who uses his faith as a weapon either politically or personal gain.

i don't know if i would say 'pro-religion' as much as i would say 'pro-spirituality'. as much blah-blah time as he spent on religion in the stand, it actually plays out as a spiritual journey by the end; desperation plays out like that as well- embrace your inner spirit voice and you shall know peace... i'm not certain that the spirit he refers to is necessarily jesus

Basically, take a look at PAN'S LABYRINTH. If you hated those FX, then don't bother expecting much from THE MIST. If, like me, you thought PAN'S was a great low-budget genre film with inventive FX work, then that's what you can expect from the finished version of THE MIST.
