If we're talking animals here, that extra joint below the knee is actually the ankle and what she'd be standing on are her toes. But she has extra feet/hands attached to the bottom. It doesn't work like that. She should have chunky toes (like a dog) or hoof-like feet for it to work.

the 'final metamorphosis' sounds kind of like a cop-out but i guess you gotta have a third act. whoever above was complaining about having 'seen this all before' i would rather see this genre be revived in a smart and interesting way by cabaple filmmakers than... well than a lot of other stuff. gattaca, dr. moreau and alien resurrection were a long time ago and god knows there are not too many original, or at least creative movies being released these days.
...the leg design bothers me
by cerebulon
Oct 4th, 2007
09:22:05 AM
The legs need to be worked on for realism. I've always like the idea of a fast-running creature also having grasping feet, but it doesn't work in reality. The only thing I can think of to preserve both forms would be modified, hoof-like knuckles on the lower extremities so that she could make "fists" with her feet while running. They should talk with Wayne D. Barlowe - he's really good at this stuff.

Could be paw-like, like cheetahs. But I agree the hands just don't work. Unless she was built for climbing and not running. Then I guess it works. Yeah, so never mind.

by TheBigDogg
Oct 4th, 2007
10:12:30 AM
...she's need one less joint in her legs to accomodate those hands. Like a monkey, for example. The biology doesn't work. Now you'd be perfectly right to ask who gives a shit. Most won't. But the director should and that he hasn't already fixed that before sending out the pics would seem to be a bad sign.

I love all the people here criticizing the leg and arm designs. I for one would love to see either the structural comparison work you've done on animals with pedigrade or digigrade architectures or the physics models you've obviously constructed of her skeletal structure. I'm not sayin' the producers did that crap either, but its a little cheap to say they did it "wrong".

These don't work, in the same way that horses and gazelles don't work, or kangaroos don't work, or elephants, or capucin monkeys, or (insert unlikely moving animal here). I do agree with the Wayne Barlowe suggestion though, but I don't think he'd be as doubtful of these designs as you lot are.

So, why don't we all jess chill and hope the story, acting, and SFX can save this flick from your petty and unfounded critiques on the chick's "unreality".

this shit looks awesome, and i'd hit it. i'm a molecular biologist, and i know almost nothing about comparative biology, so this design does not bother me. for me, its painful to hear actors rant on about "we need to make a mutant chromosome for the genetic marker!!!". in RED PLANET, michael madsen says "i'm a geneticist, i write code, thats what i do. A, G, C, P!" fucking "P"? they couldnt open a high school bio book?

I know it's nit-picky, but I've been bothered by this stuff since I was a kid. Even before I learned the word biology, I could see that most my monster toys from D&D, He-Man, etc were build wrong. I could see their wings wouldn't work, their joints bent the wrong way or their weight distribution was wrong. Maybe it is just fiction and the story matters more than a creature, but it still bugs me. It's like a hole in a fine painting.
