What about Eastern Promises? No review from you of that one? Between that, There Will Be Blood, and No Country for Old Men I finally have reasons to go to the theater. And as much as I love DDL, what do you think of Viggo's turn in EP? Of course, I could be swayed once I see the others too... Just you've been eerily silent on Eastern, what's your thoughts?

you know, i've had a shit day. but nothing's better than coming off of a bunch of crap and seeing something that is a total affirmation of everything you hold dear about your craft. i had goosebumps literally start to finish, and while i think 'blood' is going to be the tits, there's nothing quite like the storytelling one-two of the coens and cormac mccarthy. and i mean nothing.

Just be smart and start adapting great books like Anderson and the Coens just did. This shit ain't hard to figure out dog! Robert Evans figured this out back in the 70's before he became obsessed with himself and lost interest in producing good movies. Maybe Hollywood forgot how to read.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, gang, but this film is NOT the best movie of the year, nor is it even in competition for such a distinction. I'll have a full review up soon but the movie is a bit uneven. It's certainly no Fargo or Blood Simple, my two favorite Coen Brothers films. There were a lot of amazing scenes but it didn't quite come together for me as a whole. That said, I thought Javier Bardem was incredible. The performance that comes to mind is Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. I think he's created an iconic embodiment of evil, on par with all the great bogeymen. He was so good, he gave me chills, and he should be considered a lock for Best Supporting Actor. Obviously Brolin and TLJ were good too, but the other one who stood out was actually Kelly Macdonald, who's come a long way since Trainspotting. She reminds me of Kate Winslet. I thought it was a solid effort from the Coens and certainly an improvement over some of their recent films (at least in my mind), but I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed. I know Kris Tapley was underwhelmed as well. It's absolutely worth seeing, and it's a very good meditation on fate, but you'll see what I mean eventually.

listen, i fucking even own ladykillers and intolerable cruelty and i watch them all the time and i used music from ladykillers at my WEDDING, that's how big a fan i am. so i think i can say with assurance that there's at least one person who won't be disappointed. ;)

but not i. read the novel, loved it. the climax is HIGHLY unconventional and there's going to be a big backlash on this site from the talkbackers once they see this film. i enjoyed the novel myself and look forward to this seemingly faithful adaption. but i'm calling the "general audience" disapointment now.

I hate to rain on everyone's parade. I mean, most people who don't see nearly every major movie like I do will undoubtedly walk away thinking it's among the year's best, which it is, but it's definitely, DEFINITELY not THE BEST. That's all I'm trying to say. I'm trying to keep your expectations in check. I went into the screening last week thinking I was about to see the Best Movie of the Year and when it wasn't, I was disappointed. So I'm just trying to make your expectations realistic. It's still suspenseful as shit and features excellent performances and the Coen brothers' considerable writing and directing talents, but I don't see it as a Best Picture nominee. If that opinion makes me Fredo, so be it.

that's a good question. I will have to get back to you. Right now, the films from the first half of the year are the films that first come to mind. If we leave The Lives of Others out of the conversation since it won the Best Foreign Film Oscar last year, that leaves Zodiac, Once and Ratatouille, all perfect or near-perfect films. I've found fault with nearly every 'prestige' picture I've seen so far, be it Elah, Eastern Promises, No Country, Jesse James etc. I LOVED Control. Lars and the Real Girl was a sweet surprise. Into the Wild was solid. Gone Baby Gone's predictability is made up for by its last 20 minutes. I really liked Reservation Road, although I think I'm in the minority on that one. Still, despite its flaws, Elah is the film that was the most emotionally moving, at least for me. We'll see. There's still a LOT more movies coming out. I think it's been a great year for movies. Let's not forget we got two classic comedies in Knocked Up and Superbad. I got my eye on There Will Be Blood, which as far as I'm concerned, looks like the Oscar frontrunner along with Atonement. I'm skeptical about Juno and Charlie Wilson's War, but that's based solely on their screenplays. Obviously Juno has been getting RIDICULOUS buzz. Biggest disappointment so far has to be Across the Universe. And worst movie of the year so far... probably The Number 23, which was pretty wretched.

but i woulda chosen someone else for the terminatorish character of chigurh. too over-gravelly in his line deliveries - tooooo fillllled with obvious portent. and a put-on lisp for effect. god why do actors do that. john stewart does it all the fuckin time. he never used to! i'm sure bardem is a fine actor as he gets raves in everything he's in but not my choice for this which is unfortunate since he basically IS the book.

The rated R trailer is the best I've seen in...well... probably ever. I just finished the book a while back and people have complained about the ending. (minor minor spoilers) i actually like the ending as long as you understand going in that it is more about Bell than any other character. Chigurh is one of the most brutal characters ever and i just can't wait to see him played by Bardem.

I did prefer "No Country for Old Men" though-

and when i read it I was actually thinking that only the Coen brothers could make a film out of it. It's very bleak and I think that Chigurh is possibly the greatest incarnation of evil since Ming The merciless, who also seemed to kill without any true logic.
