The season finale last year was incredibly lame, and the season premier didn't do a whole lot to make it any better, so even though I'll watch tonight, I am not expecting anything good. Journeyman is by far the better show, I might add. Also, when I was watching The Bionic Woman the other night, it upset me that they could have great fight scenes in their pilot, but the most hyped show on network TV still throws lackluster (at best) action sequences at us and expects us to lap it up.
I'll stick with it...

As long as it keeps trying to improve on the storylines. Season 1 was spectacular, let's hope they can keep it up now that they lost their head writer to that fucking "pushing dasies" abortion. Oh, and speaking of abortion, Bionic Woman needs a push down the stairwell, a kick to the stomach and a coat hanger.

If at the end of that episode they stepped, back, patted themselves on the back and told everyone "job well done" we're in for a lackluster season. This does (partially) sound like things are getting back on track. Heroes is really the only show I look forward to. I'd hate to see it jump the shark so soon.

It's a disaster on every level. Every character, plot point, shot, cut, song choice, twist...everything sucks. And it gets worse with each episode. Good luck with that guys. I wonder which comic/tv show/movie/song/video game they'll rip off this week?

Seriously, I don't remember any from the Heroes premiere. I agree, the season finale left a bad taste in the mouth and the Pilot did little to give us all some hope that they are preparing to go to the next level. We let our son watch this one with us and he was trying not to fall asleep. After it was over my wife and I assured him that it is usually more interesting and should get better. Hiro seems like he is in a bad episode of Quantum Leap. Man, I hope this show gets better.

It was a lot of setup, but I guess that's what I expected. In fact, I expected more feet-dragging and far less setup-y stuff than we got, so it worked well for me. I especially enjoyed seeing how, four months after the events of the finale, most of the character's lives are total crap. Not only have they not been honoured and recognized for their actions at the end of S1, but they must continue to hide who they are and come to terms with being a superhero in a world that will most likely shun them. It's a story we've seen before and it's of course the basis for the X-Men, but I found it to be an effective setup for this new season. Plus, it was fun to close with that image of confused Peter holed up inside the container. It came as no surprise that Peter wasn't dead, but it still got me itching to see what would happen next. So yeah, the premiere worked for me.

Why? Cause it revealed that the Company was originally composed of 12 individuals who ran basically a communist nation deciding what was "the greater good" when it came to other Heroes? Cause it told us for sure that Charles Deveaux, Mr and Mrs. Petrelli, Mr. Nakamura and Mr. Linderman along with 7 unnamed individuals comprised this 12? Because it successfully reintroduced almost all of its characters in to new, interesting storylines? Because the story or Bennett and Mohinder weasling their way into the Company wasn't awesome? Honestly i think that people that didn't like this episode just didn't "get" all that we learned last week. Excellent premiere. And QUITE a pick up after the season finale...

I mean if I were a psycho like Sylar I'd just eat Matt's brains, find the girl and use her powers to track down all the heros. Just avoid the big bad in the mean time. On a side note, exactly what can this guy do to be worse than Sylar? I'm hoping he's not like Trauma from the Initiative or whatever group that guys from.

I meant the action scenes from the season finale (which made it all the more insulting). Seriously, you can't have a season finale to one of the most popular new shows of the year and then puss out on the battle royale. That's just bullshit. But what makes it worse is that Bionic Woman comes along four months later and the fight scene on the rooftops kicks the shit out of what they did on HEROES (especially when you consider they had a much smaller budget and Katee Sackhoff said she learned that fight in 30 minutes). I think HEROES tries to be too cerebral, and as soon as it realizes that it will never compare with LOST on that level and just embrace its comic-book roots, it will be fun; but until then, this is a DVR only show for me.

You get the funny award of the talkback for that one! So true. Mohinder is really insufferable most of the time. The worst parts of last season were his whole trip back to India and the silly dreams. The only interesting part was the hot Indian girl who appeared, flirted with him, then vanished never to be seen again. I guess he's an important plot point character, but I'm sure they could find a way around him if they wanted to. I also don't care for Niki-Jessica, her son, or DL. They don't seem especially connected or important to the storylines and every time we visit with them it's the same tedious digression of their little family drama. Plus the precocious son is such a cliche. They ought to just ban both precocious kids and autistic kids from TV shows--because you usually get one or the other: never just a normal brat.

The concept of the obligatory fight scene wore out it's welcome back with the second tier mid-'70s Marvel titles like Team-Up and Two-In-One.

sure ultraviolence at high power levels can be awesome. Moore's Miracleman justifiably got perturbed over having his wife kidnapped and literally flew straight through people who got in his way. but opn the other hand, paul chadwick's Concrete was basically a similar character to the FF's Thing, but he was a speech writer instead of a tempermental war vet fighter pilot, so even as a stone behemoth he continued to use his brain instead of his fists to resolve most situations. Heroes may be somewhat derivative of the genre it emulates, but it's advantage in being a unique creation and not a licensed Marvel or DC Warner property is that it doesn;t have to adhere to the genres rules and cliches.

Sure we all had those "I'd turn invisible and spy on naked girls" fantasies but obviously not everyone who can fly or read minds wants to put on tights and a cape and fight crime. Well, okay, Natt Parkman does want to use his telepathic abilities to fight crime, but with a badge, not a cape and mask.

I realize ratings and ad revenues are based on numbers and the networks just want viewers without caring why they're watching, but the people who watched all of season one expecting it to be some sort of elimination match with the season finale being a special effects intensive cage match fight to the death between whoever the two most powerful characters are, should probably just go watch something with the words "Smack Down" in the title.

I think the first episode of the season kind of sums up my feelings on the show: really cool ideas being very poorly executed.

When I read episode summaries, I think, hey, this could be a cool show. But every time I watch an actual episode, I find myself bored and irritated.

I don't mean to start up the whole Lost/Heroes thing, but I think that's why I enjoy Lost so much more: I'm captivated by the performances just as much by the concepts. Heroes has the concepts, but no truely great performances to back them up.

There were a bunch of amazing performances in Heroes. Hayden P. did an amazing job, especially around the middle when she was coping with what HRG had done to her mom. Say what you will about Niki/Jessica (personally i don't mind them) but Ali Larter did an amazing job playing them both. Zachary Quinto did a great job playing an obviously crazy and obsessed man without going camp, Jack Coleman was excellent portraying both the callous head of the Company and the caring head of his family, and the others actors did great jobs as well. The only characters I thought were weak were DL and Ando, but then again they're secondary characters on a TV show, so that's acceptable. Compare that to Lost, whose main character has NO RANGE WHATSOEVER and whose other characters are just as wooden (come on, does anyone REALLY like Rose and Bernard? Personally, I can't tell if it's them in a scene or the pine trees on the beach decided to start talking). That said, I enjoy Lost and Heroes equally-Lost for the WTF moments and Heroes for the rewarding geek drama series that it is.

Dude, if you step back from the specificity of 'superhero' and just say action/fantasy, I'm sure I can come up with a huge list of TV shows that challenge your brain more than Heroes.

I personally don't enjoy the show, but I'll admit that there is a place for its kind of fun. But 'cerebral' isn't even in the top 20 words I would use to describe it.

Try 'Lost', "BSG", "Star Trek" (pick a series), or "The X-Files". "Heroes" requires about 1/10th of the brain power.

Dude, you're speaking as a fan of the show, so there really isn't any point in arguing about whether your favorite characters are 'amazing' or not. Speaking as a neutral observer however, I can say that there isn't anything going on in Heroes that actually makes me eager to tune in from week to week.

And since I'm a fan of LOST, there really isn't any point in you trying to tell me that the actors on LOST have no range. You obviously didn't watch seasons 1-3, where Matthew Fox walked a fine line between Fearless Leader and Jerk-Off Asshole. Or Terry O'Quinn who walked a fine line between Noble Hero and Arrogant Prick. Or Josh Holloway, or Naveen Andrews, or Michael Emerson, or most of the cast, who all play multi-faceted characters who always surprise you with their actions and personal histories without ever contradicting themselves.

What with us being a fans, we shouldn't even bother argueing.

As long as you got my point, thats good. I must have made a typo up there. It's like you said, I don't have a problem with a show trying to be stupid fun, but sometimes a show needs to know it's limits and obviously HEROES thinks that it has all kinds of cool ideas (which I obviously disagree with). I would like to see more human drama (which I admit was alluded to in last weeks episode with the Hondurans) than mystery, because the answers to HEROES mysteries aren't shocking or awesome; they're just kind of bland and boring... not to mention predictable.

However, why is Mohinder going to his apartment to see Molly? Doesn't the company want Molly back? Aren't they tracking Suresh? Makes no sense.

Note to the writers on the show: you cannot have your cake and eat it to. Either Peter's amnesia means he can't access his powers, or he can in which case when the guy with the bad Irish accent is threatening to burn the box with his identity in it Peter should just be all "Here's what I think of your threats..." and then fuck him up with six different kind of superpowers. And I know what their bullshit answer is gonna be "Well his state of mind is such that yadda yadda yadda, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit." It was clearly established in this episode that if Peter wants something badly enough, he can access his powers to get it. He wants out of the ropes? He phases through them. He wants to save the nice Irish girl? He fucks up the guys with lightning, telekensis and super strength. He wants the box with his identity in it? Suddenly he's a spaz. LAAAAAAAAAAME!

Tiy are right about needing functioning brain matter to trigger the regeneration process. Otherwise they could do a Clone Saga with Claire 2 regrown from the front of her disected torso from season one. But no one wants a Claire-bear who's all tits and no brains - that would be like watching a Pam Anderson series.

Larry of Arabia, bless you for wanting me banned for being smart and rational. What's the opposite of affrionted, taken aback?

And to the Browncoat and everyone else who obsesses about Heroes borrowing details and ideas from comic books, I remind you of this. a toy company paid Marvel to license spider-Man for a toy dube-buggy "Spider-mobile". Marvel actually wrote the vehicle into the continuity, with a Japanese car company giving Spidey a car to use in return for the publicity. and two issues later he ran it into the river. On Heroes Claire gets a Japanese car in a blatent product placement and it gets stolen the next episode.

Even the idea of product placement was borrowed, though not from comics. it was an episode of "Alias", with Sydney Bristow shouting "Quick, get into the F-150!" The assumption that in a crisis someone would shout out "F-150" instead of "into the truck" or "into this black pickup" is silly, the assumption that anyone you're talking to would even know a Ford F-150 by sight is overly optimistic.

I assume its some kind of Cloak & Dagger rip-off but with the lack of any kind of back story or story really for the most part its just falling flat (at least for me). I was actually excited about these characters when I heard about em but I dont get the execution. Do we have to have a huge mysterious power reveal for every hero on the show? most of the storylines so far are lacking, if not dull. You know it's bad when Mohinder has one of the better ones, and the return of Niki is something to look forward to.

Hiro and Ando work best as a team; the story in Japan with Kensei is lame. Grunberg is a likable actor but is unbelievable when playing anything except a nice guy. I guess the wonder twins will eventually serve a purpose, but at this point, she just needs to be slapped and told to get it together. Get them to NY, already. Do you think "the Company" photograph was taken by the same guy who took the one of the X-files conspiracy group? The Magic Box...enough said. HRG is not playing the tradeoff between supremely confident (when talking about taking down the company) and paranoid (when talking to Claire) right. I really hope things kick into gear when Sylar and Bell show up.

BTW, didn't anyone note that Harry's wildest fantasy was confirmed in this episode?

(although this IS talkback) ... I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Granted, the Claire storyline needs to do something soon, but the Haitian segments were really good and Ma Petrelli kicks all sorts of ass.

The reason we're not criticizing the amnesia is because it's implicit that amnesia is a lame plot tool, hence the futurama quotes floating around last talkback. However, the Haitian's necklace means it's NOT amnesia, which makes that very well done as well.

rememebr how good the mini series of the 4400 was before it turned into complete and utter shite? lets hope heroes does not go down that root. The whole hiro back to the future storyline is boring. Hiro has spent all of season 1 trying to stop the end of the world, and now with no sense of any urgency is hanging around in japan. You know what would actually impress me if hiro did actually change the past so the peter did actually blow up ground zero at the end of season 1. The whole peter weapon x amensia storyline is boring. will you have some budget to actually get to use super powers and someone throw down a fight. come on people!, angel/buffy had a small budget and managed it every fricking week. and the death twins, what the hell is happening here, she's killled about 40 people, dude, mayvbe its time you thought about actually killing your sister yourself and doing the world a favour.

I think that memory loss - no matter what the cause - is almost always a lame plot device. I was disappointed when 24 and Lost used it in their first seasons. It's most often used to lazily string out a storyline for a few episodes. I'm not sure if the memory loss being caused by a necklace rather than a bang on the head makes it very well done.

(Ignoring the DL/Nikki/Mycah and Sylar threads in this analysis since they've only shown up in promos)

Plot 1: Murder Mystery. Someone from the League of Extraordinary Gentleheroes' past has come to mow them down. The presumption is that it's one of the people that used to be a member that split off per Linderman.

Plot 2: Peter in Ireland. Peter has somehow ended up in Ireland. Since it appears the Haitian was involved, this was very deliberate, so something must be going on there that required Peter's brain-free involvement.

Plot 3: Hiro in Japan. He's there to make Kensei into what Kensei is supposed to be.

Plot 4: The Mole. Mohinder is inside the company to take it down, with HRG's prodding (and presumably involvement in the future), at the same time, Mohinder has to deal with

Plot 5: The Virus. It may be spreading. It could jump to normal humans. Only Mohinder can stop it.

Plot 6: Molly Walker. Something's up with her. Probably tied into Plot 1.

Plot 7: Claire and Clark Kent. Not sure where they're going with this one, but I hope it goes somewhere soon. The HRG-Claire 'you have to conceal yourself' speeches are already approaching the Buffy speeches in season 7 in terms of repetition and lameness, and it's only been 2 episodes (iirc, it took 3 eps for them to get boring in BTVS).

Did I miss anything?

chrth - the hatian returning to hati would make sense if he were one of the types that wanted to die in his homeland and not foreign soil. btw, i thought is was awesome that the hatian's way of thanking mohinder was wiping that part of his memory. ep 2.2 - solid episode with plot advancement mixed with plenty of action. i love how people can kick ass and still look aloof doing it *smiles*. pursued_by_bear - loved the se7ven reference. claire/kensei - i wonder if they are related being that they both have the healing thing going on. could flyboy be nathan's son also (if that were the case then it makes that potential love thing with claire seem kinda gorss) if they are brother and sister, it seems that nathan really got around. parkman's unlikely help is going to be nathan and or angela petrelli. kensei - if he is immortal, i guess he could be the father of all the heroes and therefore could be pissed at how they are using (misusing their abilities) so it is time to wipe out this batch and start over. it would be awesome to see a kenzo/future hiro sword fight.

Heroes is a collection of great geek moments that are stitched together rather poorly. It's fun to watch the superpower scenes but good shows shouldn't piss you off every 5 minutes with unforgivably stupid dialog/plot/action. Very sloppy writing by people with no sense of logic. It's too bad because it has all the potential to be a great, classic show but as it stands the annoying moments just cancel out the great moments and we're left with something that's just 'ok'... And for crying out loud, please stop with the stupid, silly "whisper" promos... Last season it was "save the cheerleader" and now it's "THE BOX!!!"

from the 9th Wonders comic. Apparently Kring says Uluru won't be in the show, but I don't get the feeling Kring has a plan outside of a few archs here and there. At some point, if the budget is right, Uluru will show up, especially if they were to make a movie or something like that. Uluru would raise the stakes in a way that this season probably won't be able to do.
S2 didn't start big enough
by Genre_Boy

I'm not big on the Big Federal Investigation™ but everybody involved in the show could have done a better job with the first episode.

Sure, there's a new disease that's killing off super-powered individuals and there's some new Watchmen-like conspiracy that's killing off some of the Golden-Age heros and Hiro's in Japan, propping-up the reputation of some ancient hero. So what?

Kring and company have sent the show flying in a thousand different directions with first 2 episodes and that's *not* going to help them keep viewers – especially if the ongoing stories aren't contributing to the hard-bought continuity they got last season.

We know that Kring is half-lying about not reading comic books at this point but there's no reason to do full-reversals on the characters he so painfully built last season. Nathan Petrelli was a politician with lots of connections and a promising career – now he sits around his apartment growing a beard? Bad. And he *knows* his out-of-wedlock daughter and her mother are out there in the wilderness getting ready to cause more problems for his family and reputation? Double-bad.

And whether or not Nathan and Ma Petrelli are aware that Peter is alive or not, they should be out there doing Princess Diana-like public relations if not to keep themselves in the public eye, then to deflect any bad press since Peter was almost the Exploding Man.

(And yes, there's a precedent for super-heroes in unpowered public service: See Brian K. Vaughan's 'Ex-Machina' about an ex-hero being the Mayor of NYC.)

I'm at a bit of a loss here – after the threats to public safety during tha last episodes of the first season, the police should still be hunting for Sylar and the Federal Gov't should be looking for a way to monitor and control these super-powered individuals – it's too soon for a Legacy Virus. Jeph Johns should have discouraged that direction until the 3rd season, at least.

The 2nd season has opened in such a fragmented and disparate way, I'm not sure that it'll make it to Season 3. What's most disappointing is that neither Kring or the NBC programming Execs ought to have been on top of this, making an effort to both keep and grow their audience. I'm not sure where this is all headed...

Claire must have a pain threshold greater than Jack Bauer, since she barely winched after putting her hand in boiling water, AND cutting her fucking pinky toe off. I'd have been rolling around on the floor screaming like a ten year old girl. She just acted like she was a little uncomfortable. Wasn't it established last season that she feels the pain of all her injuries? (Just like Wolverine?) The difference is that Wolverine is old and battle hardened, and Claire is a whiny teenage girl. The writers must think we are idiots.

AND why the hell wouldn't Peter just use the force and pull that fucking box over to him and walk out the door? His TK doesn't work on wood??? (ala Golden age Green Lantern)

Burned Face Nathan
by I Fight For the Users
Oct 2nd, 2007
11:30:31 AM
As a burn victim, I have a theroy on where the writers are taking that small snippet from the last episode. When you've been burned like that, such as I have (85% including my entire head and face), you tend to still think and see yourself as who you once were. You kind of oblivous as to "wow, I really am that fucked up!". Sometimes, depending on my mood, I still see the old me in the mirror. But once in awhile, if I'm feeling kind of down, and I catch a glimpse in the mirror of myself, I see my burns. I'll even go further as to say sometimes my friends and strangers I've just met say they don't notice my burns because of my attitude and how I present myself. That's what we the audience are seeing. We are seeing Nathan on how HE wants to be scene. But he was drinking and depressed, and he let his guard down and we saw his burns. Peter isn't burned, well, because he can heal.

by Hunter-X

I can't find a screenshot online (yet), but it was definitely Peter in the mirror with the severe burns. Nathan was thinking about him and feeling guilty. The whole mirror thing was just a visual clue to what Nathan was thinking about. And Peter's lightning powers will be explained in a couple of episodes. He met someone not revealed yet. I'm also guessing he met up with Niki-Jessica and DL at some point since he "exploded". He definitely did not have their powers before he flew off with Nathan at the end of season 1.

Unless it's a rouse, there is no reason for Peter to be taking orders from anyone... unless they pull the whole "he can't control his powers when he wants to, it was just a spur of the moment reflex when he saved the girl" copout. Very interesting that the reflex allowed him to uniquely dispose of each of the three goons using a separate superpower... shock, TK, and super strength. Very cool looking when he punched the thell out of that guy btw.

Worst-written episode in a long-ass time. The dialogue was awful. The reaction shots of characters crapping out those scene tags were random and awkward and badly edited. And Milo could've fucking worked out a bit before this premiere. He was probably busy tagging 18-year old bum. But still.

or at the very least set up some fucking rules for the character. Within 5 more episodes he'll have reached godlike ability for crying out loud. There's nothing interesting about a character that can do EVERYTHING(and more!) and yet still does nothing. At least Sylar has the whole creepy brain eating thing but he needs to be depowered too. I'm hoping one of the plotlines this year is Uber-Peter hitting a big reset on his capabilities. Hell, while we're snagging things from all over the place have him only able to access people who are near him(a la Sync) or only able to keep and store 5 powers at a time(a la Mimic...and yes I know Mimic can store more but only use 5). They also need to get some action going...I mean for crying out loud Bionic Woman had a better fight scene in its shitty pilot than any fight in Heroes period.

Chrth- No way would Mama P remove her sons memory with how unstable he is. The Haitian may have done it on someone elses orders, but not Mama P's. He looks like Malcolm McDowell, Linderman said 'Tell him to give me my sword back' in Season 1 which we thought just meant he stole it then but clearly that's an in joke that will be apprciated years from now. Anyways, tell me anyone how I am wrong on this?

It makes sense. The spoilers say that someone in upcoming episodes returns who they thought was dead. Linderman can heal others and himself. We still don't know the Brits real name other than Kenzei, in Ep 7 or 8 right before Hiro returns to the future he will ask him name and discover that it is Linderman. Trust me. I know.
