Pixar rocks. Now, if they'd just make an Incredibles sequel. And more Brad Bird! Of any kind.

"I Even Like Cars"
by kevinwillis.net

Cars was a cool movie. Sort of like Doc Hollywood, only with race cars! But with stunning visuals, beautiful voice work (especially Paul Newman), and Larry the Cable Guy. Hardly The Incredibles (one of the best Pixar films to date, although I just watched Toy Story for the first time in 5 years and I'm impressed how well Pixar's first film holds up; it's truly a classic), but if it had been Blue Sky or Dreamworks I would frankly have been wowed by it.

But I mean it about an Incredibles sequel. No movie in the Pixar pantheon has ever cried out more loudly for a sequel. The voice performances in that movie are second to none--Craig T. Nelson has the perfect superhero, who new?--and I want to see that throwdown with the Underminer. I really do.
FIRST!!! Posters.

Because it's something to do. It's like a little game . . . why do people play bingo? Do crosswords? It's the "First!!" game. Equally as curious, why do folks who aren't interested in playing "First!!!" feel compelled to go off on the "FIRST!!!" posters. It's a legitimate question.

Sounds like R2 crossed with ET. I like the idea of a robot all alone and forever cleaning though. That's a got a classic sci-fi feel to it. Hopefully the film will be a mix of both.

He sounds like E.T. mashed up with R2-D2. Not that that's a bad thing; I think this movie will knock it out the park. And I love the Short Circuit reference with the cockroach.

to make it sound familiar. But not like a knockoff. Which I like. And that "waaaaAAAAAHHlee" at the end gets me. I just love that so much :) It seems like Pixar took every ounce of heart they have ever had in a film and found ways to condense it into quick snippets for this movie. Can't wait.

I had my little dog Woofers in my lap watching it one night. The next day she passed away very unexpectedly (but peacefully). When my other dog Bugs' time was obviously up, we sat up that night and watched it together, then she went away the next day. I cry like the little bitch that I am every time I put it on. I sure the eff hope that, indeed, "Souls don't die". Only, how to explain to my man-child when we sit down to watch this in a few years why daddy is such a bitch...???

And Wall-E looks to be another feather in what's becoming a very feather-filled chapeau for PIXAR.

When I showed my 6 year old son the previous trailer a while ago he almost exploded when the little fella mentioned his own name. I explained the movie wasn't finished for quite a while and had to make him promise we would go see it at the cinema together. No problem there son. I'm not a Pixar "fan boy" as I think most of their movies are really for young children although I really like both Toy Story's and certainly The Incredibles a whole lot. In fact I think the first Toy Story and The Incredibles are masterpieces. This movie could be the greatest since The Incredibles, I really didn't care for Cars and the Rats movies.

And unashamed of it. And frankly I believe that CARS wasn't given a fair shake from the start because it had the unmitigated gall to appeal to NASCAR fans. "Oh my God, you mean people who live BELOW the Mason-Dixon line are going to have a Pixar movie that appeals SPECIFICALLY to their culture and not my own?!? Ugh, this movie must be bad!" Sheep. CARS was a good movie. Okay, so it wasn't better than Finding Nemo. Few films ARE better than Finding Nemo. But CARS WAS better than 90% of the drek that Hollywood produces nowadays, and I think it will have fans for many years to come. Sorry - had to get that off my chest.

comes from the feeling that the flick seems to be saying that "small town" life is somehow superior to "big city" life. Which is a viewpoint that excludes and invalidates the value of lives of a whole lot of city dwellers. Personally, I think there are definite advantages to life in the city AND definite advantages to life outside of the city, but the movie felt (to me) like it was pushing one at the expense of the other.

There sure is nothing wrong with "cutesy" but I really don't understand the overwhelming love declarations from all you adults when it comes to films like Bug's Life, Finding Nemo, Monsters inc., and Cars. I think the Rat film wasn't a real children's story like the others but it bored me and my son to tears, I even saw the thing twice. (I thought the "rat escape scene " was excellent though). Yes, Pixar makes really good looking films and Wall-E looks like it could be a truly exceptional film but please explain the magnetic appeal the aforementioned kids movies have on all you adults. We're just spoiled cynical and tired. We've seen so much at this point in our lives, that we squawk at every new thing. It's like Johnny said in the Outsiders. When you're young everything is new, like gold. Like the way ponyboy digs sunsets. Stay that way, it's a good way to be. We're not like that anymore. We've been abused by images and sounds and have chosen what's the best and what's not. Now we compare everything that came before with everything that comes now. Does that make sense? Toy Story 2 took it to the next level. An amazing sequel by any estimation. And The Incredibles is the hands down best superhero movie of all time. And Monster's Inc and Finding Nemo would have been huge achievements at any other company . . .

Pixar rocks. End of story.

you are on a website dedicated to comic book inspired movies and sci-fi fantasy and horror movies. a site where comic-con is a near religious experience, and wednesdays are the best day of the week.... we like these types of movies because they are fun ....... if you can honestly say you don't like any pixar (or similar) films (not love, just like), then somewhere there is an fbi profiler who is tracking you in connection with a string of prostitute murders throughout the midwest states.

SO is Pixar trying to see if they can make anything cute? How about a turd? Can you make that cute and lovable Pixar? Call him Chunky and he falls in love with an uppity Douche. We will laugh and cry as those two worlds collide. There can be a romantic dance scene in the toilet bowl. And comedic secondary characters like the toothbrush and toilet paper. You can call it "Doody and the Yeast"!

Considering how many violent, stupid, non-descript pieces of eye-trash ooze down Hollywood's buttcrack and into theaters, you'd think some of you slaggers would be a little more lenient towards ONE Pixar movie a year? They're for all ages without being for complete retards, made with meticulous care and attention to detail, and are generally entertaining to a wide range of people. If you want to go see that 90-pound stick woman blow up zombies for the third time or breathlessly await another movie about tying chicks up and cutting their faces off, or yet another comic book movie slapped on the screen aimed specifically at retards who like blood and sweaty man-abs, be my guest. Leave Pixar alone, they do what they do better than you will ever do what you do. Well, except masturbate, we all do that pretty well.

Along with Hot Fuzz. And while Remy deserved to do WAY better, it wasn't a bomb by any stretch of the imagination. 200M ain't no bomb, sure it dropped a bit from Cars domestically (their most shallow and pandering film, in my opinion), but is doing much better overseas and has a good shot at making more than Cars did overall. This looks like a risk for Pixar by having hardly any dialogue, but I think they can pull it off. It has never been a problem in short films, and other movies have done it for shorter stretches. They've definitely got me interested.
Not a hater at all...

No, I'm not a hater at all of Pixar or Disney (how could anyone) and I fully agree that both Toy Story's and The Incredibles are not just animated gems but as classic as movies can be. I guess I'm just not that impressed looking at their complete full lenght movie filmography 'till now. Which is fine since I guess they don't make films in the first place aimed at 40 year-old males. But it sure is nice to see Pixar trying to make their movies/stories a bit more adventurous/not solely for kids (and overall animation fans )since The Incredibles. But I personally found nothing appealing about their last two films (not even the photo-realistic animation could save 'em),if you don't have a big interest into (talking) cars or cooking, well there just simply wasn't too much too enjoy. Nothing amazing about those stories either, especially the Rat film which I find hard to imagine that story would be all that appealing with the under-18's. But if you're a big car nut or kitchen princess yourself, yes, I can see how that could make a really big difference. Just imagine Pixar breaking out of the 'family movie thing' sometime and starting to make different and 'serious' movies. (Without the hairy and cuddly characters). Now, I'm sure many of us would be thrilled to bits about that prospect right? I guess you would be if you're a huge animation (and film) fan like myself. But first bring on Wall-E, it sure looks and feels like an amazing film already reading about it and seeing the bits of artwork and terrific clips from that.

Computers suck....integrated CGI is bad enough....but this shit is boring. I go to school with computer animators and while its something that requires a great deal of training and effort, it is not a talent like cell animation. CGI is the cinema equivalent of 'my ten year old can do that...." and soon he will be able to....

Ratatouille was like that hot chick in high school, that looked incredibly gorgeous but was completely boring and unimpressive when you actually interacted with her. I'm totally on board with Wall-E, though. I just hope Lasseter has the balls to release it with no dialogue and keep it from going the way of Dinosaur from a few years back.

supposedly a mix of live-action and animation (maybe motion-capture) directed by Andrew Stanton and perhaps in association with Zemeckis. Brad Bird is working on "1906" the "earthquake-movie" but I don't think it's a Pixar film. JCOM is supposed to be Stanton's next and Pixar has already snatched up JOHNCARTEROFMARS-MOVIE.COM, JOHNCARTEROFMARS-THEMOVIE.COM, and JOHNCARTEROFMARSTHEMOVIE.COM domains...there's nothing there yet though.

Henson is my hero too but remember he did start the whole "_____ babies" thing rolling. Not completely infallible. Yes the Honeymooners/Dinosaurs series we'll blame on Brian.

But your "informed" opinion on CGI is so fucking retarded in its reasoning I hardly know where to start. Yes, there's a red button you'll be able to push that says "animate". Jesus. How fucking old are you?

Shuttlepod - not every movie they do has Happy Meals. Especially the one about, you know, good food!

Oh dear Ganymede, posting about originality and at the same time discovering the Short Circuit thing like it hasnt' been said 1000 times in every post already! Tool. I don't see people posting unoriginality TBs every time a new buddy movie with 2 cops come out. That goes for your enlightened post too, Neo Zeed.

More robot movies are a BAD thing??

I'm grumpy tonight. Maybe 'cause it's almost 5 in the morning. The trailer made happy, even if it was only a little bit different to the other.

Whoever up there talked about "some other planet", the planet is Earth. It's not 'til later he goes off. Sorry, just can't find your post anywhere up there now.

Oh and bring on Power of the Dark Crystal in 2009! Genndy rocks, and this will hopefully be the best of all puppetry, animatronic and cg worlds. Best tool for the job I say!

Pixar outright stole the design of another character and are passing it off as their own. Unless the creators of Short Circuit sold all rights to Disney(or gave permission), they should seek legal action. Do you care about that half vader? Creators rights?Or does your feelings on originality only extend to talkback posts?

but you asked for it, so... if you actually read the other posts (and previous threads where a bunch of others made the same amazing conclusion as you only proving that for a movie site TBers generally haven't seen that many movies), you would have seen that my personal feeling is that it shares as much with the binocular-head treadmill and 'goose' droids from Star Wars. There's a bit of Huey Duey and Louey (the robots not the ducks they were named after) in there too. Many have made the comment about Pixar making photorealistic movies. They're not really right either.

Instead of being so snippy (I wasn't right that your post was the 100th echo of the same thing without acknowledging it?) consider that his form has something to do with his function and draws on the same sort of real world examples audiences would subconsciously recognise. Yes there may be similarities but it's certainly not the outright rip you imagine. The girl character has iPod lines but it's all a design comment and in aid of the story. C3PO is analogous in how similar he is to Maria, but still pretty iconic in his own right. And Mickey Mouse and Mighty mouse (or Felix in the earlier iteration) are similar but also distinct. Chewie looks just like the adult "Little Fuzzies" but still his own guy. Fair?

It's reasonable that his body is boxy and compact - and that his head would be separate to emphasize that, as well as being more practical (and much more importantly, expressive). You wouldn't get that if he was completely self contained though. I'll bet a hundred bucks that he's inquisitive and that's why they gave him the binocular type head with the focusing lenses. The foreshortened angles to give his eyes sclera is incredibly clever. And the neck amplifies his interest when he cranes/extends it to look at something or as a muppet-type accent. There's no 'golden triangle' because he doesn't talk. And he's yellow to play up the forklift thing. The practical design cues are part of it, but the emotional response is even more important. You liked Empire, right? The walkers are the stupidest thing ever if you want to be literal about it. In a setting where they've established that vehicles have some sort of anti-gravity device, why walk over the terrain when you can fly? It's moronic! The reason of course is the emotional analogy of being stomped underfoot by a huge beast. Pixar do the same thing with the shape, scale and character(!)istics of their characters. I'm guessing but I think even his name is purposely invoking Walmart and all that it implies.

Since you asked, yes originality IS important to me, being a character designer. I also think that certain emotional responses are acheived in certain ways and there's overlap if the character or purpose require it. Good guys = generally not jagged and pointy (Ed Scissorhands is the exception that proves the rule). Cute characters = head roughly the same size as the body, bigger eyes etc. See what I'm getting at? Years ago I was accused of 'copying' another artist's decisions for choosing a certain animal to do a certain task. Aside from the fact I'd done mine years before, and that he'd done so many damn animals in contrast to my three it was hard NOT to overlap, the unescapable fact was that if he'd done his research/homework he SHOULD be coming up with the same animals for the same tasks, as it was all about the appropriate context. And the animals were so distinctive visually they're alway going to look superficially similar if you stylise them. I also had scientists actually criticising me for giving them four digits instead of the 'right' amount! I said Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny don't stand upright and talk in real life either! And that considering the characters were supposed to be friendly, I wasn't sure poison spurs were the right choice, accurate as it might be.

Anyway I hope all this rambling has satisfied you and that you can agree I made a fair comment about your post. Like I said it was about 5 in the morning. Don't argue, or I'll bore you to death again. ;) Cheers.
