You know, there's been so much work, so many cuts and versions and so much fighting to get Blade Runner just right.

The irony will be when Len Wiseman or Ronald Emmerich gets a remake approved with a $300 million budget and casts Paul Walker and Jessica Alba in the lead roles.

The scene where Deckard is being briefed on the various replicants that he needs to find by his superior has always bugged me. It's always seemed obvious that it originally just had him looking at pictures of the fugitives. The corny descriptions ("Beauty and the beast - she's both") have a change in audio level that doesn't match the on-screen dialogue. Like Ford's narration, it seemed to be studio-added, but remained in the Director's Cut. Did anyone else find it unnecessary?

RIDLEY SCOTT Quote from Wired Magazine
by THE KNIGHT
Oct 1st, 2007
01:26:40 AM
Wired: It was never on paper that Deckard is a replicant.

Scott:It was, actually. That's the whole point of Gaff, the guy who makes origami and leaves little matchstick figures around. He doesn't like Deckard, and we don't really know why. If you take for granted for a moment that, let's say, Deckard is a Nexus 7, he probably has an unknown life span and therefore is starting to get awfully human. Gaff, at the very end, leaves an origami, which is a piece of silver paper you might find in a cigarette packet, and it's a unicorn. Now, the unicorn in Deckard's daydream tells me that Deckard wouldn't normally talk about such a thing to anyone. If Gaff knew about that, it's Gaff's message to say, "I've read your file, mate." That relates to Deckard's first speech to Rachael when he says, "That's not your imagination, that's Tyrell's niece's daydream." And he describes a little spider on a bush outside the window. The spider is an implanted piece of imagination. And therefore Deckard, too, has imagination and even history implanted in his head.

I always loved the dove flying up into the blue sky. Sure, it didn't make any godamn sense, as the shot cuts back to Deckard at night in the rain, but I thought it was all poetic and symbolic, y'know. And stuff. Although it was just because it was shot later 'cause you can't make a dove fly in the rain.

So what if the dove flies up into a blue sky? It's little quirks and imperfections like that that make a film interesting. And getting Harrison Ford's son to double for him is going to be *less* distracting than Harrison Ford's lousy lip-synch? Whatever. I hate special editions- they never know when to fucking quit with the tweaking.
Only director's cut that keeps getting shorter?
by Nazzim O'Bazzim
Oct 1st, 2007

I is kind of admirable that Ridley Scott keeps whittling his film down a little instead of inflating it. (He said in the Wire interview that this was a little shorter because some scenes had been padded to cover the narration, and I remember when the director's cut first came out that THAT was shorter than the original.) I can't think of any other directors cuts that actually make the film longer. I hope the 5-disc DVD has the original warts-and-all Bladerunner. Oh, and I liked the music in the opening of Touch of Evil, so suck it, Orson.

Here we have a nice simple story about a human who has lost his capacity for empathy being taught a lesson in said quality by a robot. A human gets his humanity back. That's the fucking point. Deckard being a replicant is a goddamn gimmick. A half-assed excuse of a twist. And it fucking ruins the beauty of Hauer's monologue and the effect the whole story has on Deckard. Replicant Deckard = pointless. (Plus, he does get his ass kicked several times. What kind of lame ass blade runner replicant is that). He's not a replicant. Olmos read his diary, that's how he knew about the unicorn. He was just making fun of him for being gay. That's the truth. Anyone who contradicts me is an idiot.

I haven't seen this version, but the scene he reshot is a long shot through a highly reflective window. Maybe they redid the whole thing, or only replaced Ford's head, either way it's just a single long shot so it will probably work fine. The audio sync was ridiculously bad in the original, so bad I always though it was an avante garde choice of the director's.

It doesn't matter what Ridley Scott thinks, because an artist's interpretation of his own work is not authoritative. If replicants are such a danger to society that a special division of the police force has to hunt them down and kill them, why would they place a replicant within the police force? And if Deckard is actually a replicant designed to hunt replicants, then why would they make him so much weaker and dumber than his quarry? He can't be an older model, because then he'd be dead, and he can't be a newer model, because then it makes no sense that he's so weak.

The reason the chief explains all about replicants is called Exposition. It is how you dump a lot of info onto the audience. As for explaining them to Deckard, I think it was to tell him about the different life-spans of the new models as well as show him the pics, and give him something to say while doing it. Duh. I took a plot-reading course, that's how I know this.
The whole Deckard is a replicant thing...
by onyxquill
Oct 1st, 2007
03:22:27 PM
I could go wither way on it...but: Let the conspiracies begin! 1. Isn't it possible that he was the first of the new replicants (like Rachel - a prototype of sorts) to be put into the police force by the corporation and watched over? 2. The real Deckard was killed an replaced by a replicant by the corporation. 3. Maybe he was used to tracking down older models and needed a refresher on the latest technology as one talkbacker was wondering about the exposition on the 4 year life span in the beginning. 4. How's this for conspiracy, all humans live off world and everyone on earth is a replicant. 5. Perhaps Rachel and Deckard being newer models didn't have the life span issues. Who knows and who cares? I'm bored off my ass at work. P.S. I remember seeing a bit in the trailer for the new version that had some hot dominatrix chicks in a bubble and no mention in either of the reviews above. So how bout it? Any added eye candy or what?
I have spoken with David Peoples...
by CopOnTheEdge
Oct 1st, 2007
03:29:46 PM
...and he's confirmed that the unicorn and the idea of Deckard being a replicant were NOT in any drafts of the script nor were they part of the original shooting schedule. Peoples said that the whole idea of Deckard being a replicant came from Ridley Scott reading one of his re-written scenes and wrongly interpreting that it revealed this concept. But then Peoples corrected him, and thought it was forgotten. But Scott ran with it and since he was in his "unicorn phase" with the Tom Cruise movie, he added a unicorn to it and shot it all. You don't have to believe me, but I heard it from the man's mouth myself, the man being one of our great screenwriters, David Peoples (Unforgiven). Scott's lying now for the press to sell the dvds, same thing that Donner does for all of his "Director's Cuts."

That makes a lot more sense. I think the other reason some might think Deckard could be a replicant was that some scenes showed the replicants eyes glowing under certain conditions and one point, Deckards glow the same way. It's when he's in his kitchen with Rachel.

I think the ambiguity of whether or not he is a replicant enriches the story. I do like that the unicorn hints at it, but a definitive answer ruins it. As long as the answer is not explicit in the film, I'm happy. Ridley can say whatever he wants, but when the art is already out in the world separate from the artist, I'll interpret it as I like.

The truth about Deckard is that before the events of Bladerunner, on another mission in LA, he was chasing another replicant based on his own DNA, only made supperior. In the battle, he was about to be defeated, when he told the replicant that there was something he knew how to do that the replicant didn't and that was how to die. Then he rolled into the machine that created the replicant and was diffused into silvery strands, like a spinning galaxy in a liquid universe. So then the replicant Decker takes his place, and two years later Bladerunner happens. It's all in an early screenplay for a Bladerunner prequel that was never filmed. You can find it on eBay.

Why would the police force use replicants if they're so dangerous to humans? It doesn't make any sense, especially since they are outlawed by penalty of death. Wouldn't these Blade Runner reps inevitably all find out they're reps and revolt against their employers? Not a very smart move by the LAPD, but then again the LAPD aren't the smartest bunch period.

You're overthinking the story. The point is not why the police would use replicants (it's not set in LA btw), but what happens in the mind of the replicant if they would. Bladerunner is Cyberpunk, and Cyberpunk is all about machine becomming man (replicants are alive) while man becomming machine (Deckard isn't really human). That's the basic concept of Cyberpunk right there. See also Ghost in the Shell, Neuromancer, The Matrix trilogy for the exact same ideas told in different ways. Asking yourself why the police would use replicants is like asking why the machines in The Matrix would use humans to power themselves when they might as well use elephants. It's irrelevant. The point is that they do and what happens.

Actually it makes perfect sense that he is weaker. If he is the next generation of replicant, say a number "7" his existence would only re-affirm the Tyrell Corp's own motto. "More human than human" To do this one of the obvious changes would be considerably less muscle density. Also, the fact that he wasn't a "combat" model may factor into the reasoning as well. When you think it through it does actually makes sense.

SO Newc, what about Abdul Ben Hassan then? The snake guy.

And Aquatarkusman, as for how many times can a movie take your money, ever heard of "Star Wars"?!

Aqua, EG and Gilkuliehe, as for the strength thing and I said this on the last BR TB, he's supposed to be a cop right? And it's advantageous to have a replicant searching for a replicant right? Sort of defeats the purpose if that cop is overtly aware of his true nature though. His inherent understanding would give him the edge and as they say in the film make him "the best". They already show that replicants can be specialised. Makes sense. Is Rachel super powerful? We don't really know, but probably not. She's Tyrell's Astro Boy but without the strength. All the irony and symbolism still holds if Deckard MAY be a replicant, too. I'm actuallyin the "he could be" camp, not "he is" so I'm not an "idiot who contradicts me (you).

Laserbrain Batutta & Spandau Belly, they only used Ford's son's mouth, and just to correct the lipsync (still using Harrison's voice, duh!). The ADRd stuff didn't match the mouth movements very well. Usually you don't really notice that stuff - there are slight mismatches all the time when they change lines in dubbing. Also, I think it's in that English doco but even if Scott insists he IS a replicant, Fancher and Peoples said they only meant to imply the possibility (the unicorn can mean Rachel has an extended lifespan), not state it outright. Doesn't even have to be interpreted literally. Which is exactly the sort of poetry you were talking about Laser. Speaking of which, the dove flying off as dawn breaks would be poetic (skirting cliché but at least the metaphor would be clear), not broad daylight with a dorky silver shed in the background. Fair comment and all, but so is changing it the way they did.

M.O.M. - predecesses? WTF? Try 'precedes' dude! ;)

I wonder if anyone has tried using that album as a secondary soundtrack to "Blade Runner" much as Pink Floyd is used for "The Wizard of Oz". It is a very under-rated album...

Yeah the term "cyberpunk" wasn't in use when the book was written, but it's still a cyberpunk movie. So it came out 2 years before Neuromancer, so what? That only proves how much influence it had in creating the genre.
Some nice arguements here...

-then the writer and the director had different ideas about the Deckard-as-replicant issue. Who wins? Depends how you feel about the Auteur Theory, I suppose.
Computers

I know this is a dumb question, but one that has stuck with me. I started watching the movie about a month or two ago for the first time, and while I was finding everything pretty believable (within reason), the thing that really got me was the old computers used in the movie. Actually, it wasn't even the old computers, but the old curved screens with the really computery writing. To anyone who has watched the Final Cut, have the computers and what's on them been changed at all?

Man, they just don't make movies that look like this anymore. Shouldn't every film's set be treated like a character in the film?

For me it was only distracting for about five seconds because I justified it this way: Everything in that world is old and grungy. It's like a planet of antique dealers who eat Chinese and never clean anything. Kinda fits the mold.

Why is Deckard getting his ass handed to him all the time if he's a replicant? I'm not interested in hypothesis, rather an "offical" explanation if R. Scott is going to all the trouble of stating Deckard is a replicant. I'm not arguing that he's not a replicant, I'm just curious if anyone's explained that.
Not the same film you grew up with

Sorry Guys. I caught a screening at the Landmark and felt my favorite 80's sci-fi flick isn't the same anymore. The sound is different, the Noir narration is gone. The awkward blue sky for the dove is now dark. It's changing history. I miss the warts and all. Ps: Zhora still starts in heels and dies in flat workboots. Oops? Roy pushes a nail through his hand and missing is the cool echoing shout... It's just different. I miss my "cold fish". Someone should release a copy with Ford's Mickey Spilane dialogue back in. That's the film I grew up with. Not this.

Those are some great mini reviews, I saw a screening of the Final Cut and I think it is the best version of Blade Runner easily. btw has anyone heard of the "Inspiring the future" contest that was being held as a promotion for the final cut? People uploaded tons of fan art, literature, fashion designs and music to the site that was either directly inspired by the movie or just similar, its a great way to see some amazing fan art. The contest is in its voting stage right now. Check out www.bladerunnercontest.com

well, its clear: to Scott, the director, Deckerd is a replicant. His answer to why he's weaker, has his own life, allowed to wander around and "quit" his job? "Maybe he's a Nexus 7." This is idiocy. A movie makes a contract with the viewer that he';s going to get everything he needs to understand the story. The producer and writer of the film? According to them, in both they're commentaries and the book "On the Edge: The Making of Balderunner", Deckard is human. Otherwise, his journey to understand that replicants are a lifeofmr as valid as human beings make no sense. Seems to me Scott is just talking out his ass.

the final cut is not better, the sad truth is that without the narration, the story doesn't make sense.
