This guy keep bringing classic after classic... I think Mars Attacks is one of the most unsung films of the 90's. Not flawless, but has enough moments to be considered a fucking brilliant film. Saw that thing 6 times in the theater, god knows how many times on DVD and that thing still makes me laugh. Burton is the Bizarro World Spielberg.

Don't forget beetlejuice people. All in all Burton had a pretty great run in the late 80's early 90's. Ed Wood (1994) Batman Returns (1992) Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Edward Scissorhands (1990) Batman (1989) Beetle Juice (1988) Sure the original batman doesn't hold up so well but it still led to batman TAS (theres no way they would have been able to go as dark as they did without the burton movie being a hit). So bit of respect for burton, he used to be awesome once, also i like big fish and mars attacks has it's moments.

Burton has always been a style over substance director, but sometimes the two merge and we get some damn good movies. What I've found though is certainly in his later movies he lacks heart. It was particularly true in Charlie and the chocolate factory where it simply moved from one massive set piece to the other without ever giving us a chance to get to know or like charlie.

I watched both films when i was pretty young and although i loved the visuals it was the fact that i cared about the characters that made me keep watching. Burton just doesn't seem to care about making interesting characters anymore just the scenery. Shame really

...I don't know. His style is just so immediately recognizable that I was kind of over him by the time I was 17. I actually loved Batman in '89. I was on a high for a year after I saw that. And I really liked Edward Scissorhands the following year. Then Batman Returns was a really big letdown for me, and a lot of it had to do with the overabundance of Burton-isms I couldn't ignore throughout the whole movie. Then he produced Nightmare Before Christmas (which I know everyone loves, and I appreciate,) but by then I felt so smothered by his style and the look he gives his movies, that I had a hard time really liking the flick. Ed Wood was definitely different, and I agree that it's probably his best work. Mars Attacks was weird and funny in odd places, but at least more colorful and unique than the stuff he had done in the past. Since then, he's been the remake king (PotA, Willy Wonka, Sweeny Todd, even Sleepy Hollow was used property,) so it's almost hard to figure out exactly where he himself has come to as a creative storyteller. And so I guess news of a Frankenweenie remake doesn't really move him forward much. But yeah, Big Fish was good. And I still haven't seen Corpse Bride yet, but I can tell he certainly was dipping back into the classic Burton well for the construction of that project.

Yeah, it was pretty much like fucking a dead girl...smelly, boring, and afterward I felt like I'd done something wrong. Three people I went with fell asleep. Pretty much everything else Tim Burton has done, I've liked...Corpse Bride...It was like the producers saw how many pre-teen goth kids bought the Nightmare Before Christmas lunch boxes and wanted to market the same kind of movie to the same kind of crowd (succeeding, because most of the people I see wearing the crappy t-shirts or spewing their love for this movie can't name a single song from it face to face. Nightmare, on the other hand has memorable songs, hilarious characters, and is more than a shill for t-shirts, lunch boxes, and other crap with a 'dark kiddie' theme.) Irony is dying, and we're drowning it in a washtub in the yard. Boo to any more stop motion garbage. Yaay for Sweeney Todd!!

His movies feel like being invited to a child's room to watch him play with his toys, except that the child is sort of socially stunted or something, and he doesn't really pay attention to you or particularly acknowledge your presence the whole time. I imagine him -- if he hadn't been so lucky in life and gotten all the breaks he got -- just being one of those guys who works at the same used book store his entire life and wears the same clothes all the time.

Right after Sleepy Hollow. That film showed that his magic was fading, but everything after that has pretty much blown. BUT of course the movie going public has said otherwise. In as much as he were being disingenuous and inaccurate about Burton. I like most of Burton's stuff, but the man he was actually talking about was Park (although they've obviously got the corporate Disney blinkers on). That's if this is true of course. Problem was, she was talented 'as a dancer and a model' but not much of an actress. Burton new this, and wisely cast her in only small roles in Ed Wood and in non-speaking roles in Planet of the Apes, Sleepy Hollow, Mars Attacks etc. She's certainly great fun to look at...but come on...Helena Bonham Carter is an actress. The third captures both the comic book feel and a touch of ironic campyness without ever being unwatchable. Even Chris O'donnell couldn't completely ruin it. I just caught it again on Starz. But at least he tries something original once in a while. Hated Big Fish, though, fucking hated it with a passion. I know people who put it up with their favorite moves of all time and I just hold my tongue. It was supposed to be touching but to me it just felt hollow, almost like celluloid masturbation. Mars Attacks was so bad it was almost like a punch in the stomach. But then there is Beetle Juice, Ed Wood, Edward Sissorhands and, for me at least, Sleepy Hollow. At least we get to see Helena Bonham Carter in everything he makes now. She is kickass.
