This guy keep bringing classic after classic... I think Mars Attacks is one of the most unsung films of the 90's. Not flawless, but has enough moments to be considered a fucking brilliant film. Saw that thing 6 times in the theater, god knows how many times on DVD and that thing still makes me laugh. Burton is the Bizarro World Spielberg.

Don't forget beetlejuice people. All in all Burton had a pretty great run in the late 80's early 90's.

Ed Wood (1994) Batman Returns (1992) Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Edward Scissorhands (1990) Batman (1989) Beetle Juice (1988)

Sure the original batman doesn't hold up so well but it still led to batman TAS (theres no way they would have been able to go as dark as they did without the burton movie being a hit). So bit of respect for burton, he used to be awesome once, also i like big fish and mars attacks has it's moments.

Burton has always been a style over substance director, but sometimes the two merge and we get some damn good movies. What I've found though is certainly in his later movies he lacks heart. It was particularly true in Charlie and the chocolate factory where it simply moved from one massive set piece to the other without ever giving us a chance to get to know or like charlie.

but then if you look at something like edward scissorhands or nightmare before christmas and it's got huge amounts of character. I watched both films when i was pretty young and although i loved the visuals it was the fact that i cared about the characters that made me keep watching. Burton just doesn't seem to care about making interesting characters anymore just the scenery. Shame really

Freedom of speech, G@briel?

Freedom of speech is alive and well. In fact, you have the right to go start your own website where you can scream to the heavens about whatever the hell you like.

And if you're referring to Mori's removing Bitch Killer as "no free speech," I'd like to point out that that ain't censorship - it's website moderating. They own this forum. They can remove whatever the hell they like. It's really just that simple. If Dickhead Cheney came around and said posts had to be removed, THAT'S censorship. You want to see a public forum online where there's no moderating? Look at all the social retards on YouTube. You want to go to a talkback and see a bunch of pre-pube dickheads posting things like, "COPY AND PASTE THIS POST IN TEN OTHER TALKBACKS OR YOUR WHOLE FAMILY WILL DIE IN AN HOUR" or shit like, "Nice Article. For some great man-on-goat porn vids, check out www.ba-a-a-aadboyz.com!"

I'd gladly take a few morons drop-kicked from a TB instead of that crap anyday.

Charlie was ok, but dosen't stand up so well on a second veiwing. I'm looking forward to Sweeny Todd, even though that poster(Depp with crazy hair & pin-stripe trousers sitting in dilapidated attic flat) verges on Burton turning into self-parody. Planet of the Apes is the only properly shit film Burton has made, even he wouldn't dispute that.
I Like Burton, but...
by LlGHTST0RMER
Oct 1st, 2007
06:23:56 AM
...I don't know. His style is just so immediately recognizable that I was kind of over him by the time I was 17. I actually loved Batman in '89. I was on a high for a year after I saw that. And I really liked Edward Scissorhands the following year. Then Batman Returns was a really big letdown for me, and a lot of it had to do with the overabundance of Burton-isms I couldn't ignore throughout the whole movie. Then he produced Nightmare Before Christmas (which I know everyone loves, and I appreciate,) but by then I felt so smothered by his style and the look he gives his movies, that I had a hard time really liking the flick.

Ed Wood was definitely different, and I agree that it's probably his best work. Mars Attacks was weird and funny in odd places, but at least more colorful and unique than the stuff he had done in the past.

Since then, he's been the remake king (PotA, Willy Wonka, Sweeny Todd, even Sleepy Hollow was used property,) so it's almost hard to figure out exactly where he himself has come to as a creative storyteller. And so I guess news of a Frankenweenie remake doesn't really move him forward much.

But yeah, Big Fish was good. And I still haven't seen Corpse Bride yet, but I can tell he certainly was dipping back into the classic Burton well for the construction of that project.

07:29:33 AM
Yeah, it was pretty much like fucking a dead girl...smelly, boring, and afterward I felt like I'd done something wrong. Three people I went with fell asleep. Pretty much everything else Tim Burton has done, I've liked...Corpse Bride...It was like the producers saw how many pre-teen goth kids bought the Nightmare Before Christmas lunch boxes and wanted to market the same kind of movie to the same kind of crowd (succeeding, because most of the people I see wearing the crappy t-shirts or spewing their love for this movie can't name a single song from it face to face. Nightmare, on the other hand has memorable songs, hilarious characters, and is more than a shill for t-shirts, lunch boxes, and other crap with a 'dark kiddie' theme.) Irony is dying, and we're drowning it in a washtub in the yard.

"I Love"...

...is the phrase that should begin all Tim Burton movie titles, as in "I Love Vincent Price" or "I Love Classic Universal Monster Movies" or "I Love Skeletons" or "I Love The '50's" or "I Love Dead Girls" or "I Love Gothic Horror" or "I Love B-Movies" or "I Love The Fact That Doing This Comicbook Movie -- Even Though I Don't Like Comicbooks and Therefore Will Make It More Like A Classic Universal Monster Movie -- Will Send My Career Into The Stratosphere So That I Can Make All The Universal Monster Movie/Skeleton/Gothic Horror/'50's-Throwback/Stop-Mo tion/B-Movie/Vincent Price Tributes I Want". The exception is Big Fish, which made me think he was maturing as a filmmaker, until he turned around and made Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride (which plays like an extra disc of outtakes in some unreleased ultra-super edition of Nightmare Before Christmas). Don't get me wrong -- I like some of his movies quite a bit, but I see very little that's actually original about Tim Burton, and I think he should have been a production designer or someone more involved somehow with the look of films and not given the responsibility to tell stories or flesh out characters. His movies feel like being invited to a child's room to watch him play with his toys, except that the child is sort of socially stunted or something, and he doesn't really pay attention to you or particularly acknowledge your presence the whole time. I imagine him -- if he hadn't been so lucky in life and gotten all the breaks he got -- just being one of those guys who works at the same used book store his entire life and wears the same clothes all the time.

that everyone is all "i hate tim burton." but then, slowly everyone has said "well what about beetlejuice? yeah that was good. so was ed wood. yeah. so was edward scissorhands." slowly but surely, you've listed the man's entire filmography. that's an exaggeration on my part. seriously though, i think he has just started losing a step or two in his later years. think about him in his prime: nightmare, beetlejuice, sleepy hollow (this one's status as a great film is definately up for debate), batman and batman returns, vincent and frankenweenie, scissorhands, pee wee(!), ed wood, mars attacks...etc. i think you haters are just frustrated by his later work: big fish (i liked it, but only because of my relationship with my father who tells similar, sensational stories), corpse bride, and the mind-raping travesty that was charlie and the chocolate factory. but come on people, give credit where credit it is due, the man has had a pretty brilliant career.

...and seems to be asleep at the wheel ever since. Which, oddly enough, was when he traded out Lisa Marie for Helena Bonham Carter. Hmm... Anyway, he peaked with "Ed Wood". Hopefully this Sweeney Todd movie wakes him up finally....... TOP 5 TIM BURTON MOVIES... 1. Ed Wood, 2. Pee Wee's Big Adventure, 3. Beetlejuice, 4. Edward Scissorhands, 5. Sleepy Hollow ... the Batman movies are great "Burton" movies, but suck as "Batman" movies. I didn't realize that until I got some Batman reading under my belt. Batman Begins sealed the deal. Elfman's score is amazing. Didn't included "Nightmare B4 X-mas" because he didn't direct it (Henry Selick did).

Right after Sleepy Hollow. That film showed that his magic was fading, but everything after that has pretty much blown. BUT of course the movie going public has said otherwise. But lets face it, Danny Elfman and Tim Burton haven't made a truly unforgetable movie in a while. I hope Sweeney Todd is good but lets face it I cannot recall one like STAND OUT scene in any of his movies after Sleepy Hallow. His movies may look cool now but they are boring.

In as much as he were being disingenuous and inaccurate about Burton. I like most of Burton's stuff, but the man he was actually talking about was Park (although they've obviously got the corporate Disney blinkers on).

That's if this is true of course.

And if it is, Burton's either laughing and/or shaking his head, considering the way he was treated while he was an animator there from all accounts. We did get two cool shorts out of it though, especially Vincent.

drag Frankenweenie out to feature length. Heh, at least with this movie you know the dog dies up front. Planet of the Apes would have been alot better without Wahlberg as the lead. At that point in his career he was not a leading man/box office draw. The makeup for Burton's Planet of the Apes was so good that every time I see Helena Bonham Carter (Burton?) I can't help but picture her all dolled up as an ape. Which makes for some funny ass thoughts. I kept trying not to laugh when she showed up in Harry Potter 5, but damn that witch was hairy!!!!

Agreed. I can watch that Ed Wood -Lisa Marie- Dance video on the Ed Wood DVD over and over and over. Heck...obviously I have.
Problem was, she was talented 'as a dancer and a model' but not much of an actress. Burton new this, and wisely cast her in only small roles in Ed Wood and in non-speaking roles in Planet of the Apes, Sleepy Hollow, Mars Attacks etc. She's certainly great fun to look at...but come on...Helena Bonham Carter is an actress.

The Burton movies are classics (at least the first one is) but they're more Tim Burton than Batman. The third captures both the comic book feel and a touch of ironic campyness without ever being unwatchable. Even Chris O'donnell couldn't completely ruin it. I just caught it again on Starz.

That's my heretical thought for the day.
