The Woman is still Jaime Sommers (EastEnders import Michelle Ryan), but now she's a bartender raising a teenage sister (Lucy Kate Hale) and dating a super-smart professor, Will (Chris Bowers). Good thing, too, because after a near-fatal accident, he saves her life by turning her bionic. You'd think that once the initial shock passed, she'd be grateful. In this show, not so much. Instead, Ryan delivers almost every line with the same, steady whine, squeezing whatever energy there might have been out of an already tiresome premise. FIND MORE STORIES IN: NBC | Ryan | Battlestar Galactica | Bionic Woman | David Eick | Jaime Sommers | Six Million Dollar Man Thrown on top of the story like a smothering blanket are a host of uninvolving characters: the coldly cynical official in charge of the project (Miguel Ferrer); the second-in-command who stakes out the middle ground (Molly Price); the trainer who hates Will (Will Yun Lee); and Will's crazy, imprisoned father (Battlestar's Mark Sheppard), who's in league with the show's shadowy bad guys. Oh, and there's the hour's one bright spot — Katee Sackhoff, another Battlestar transfer, as a bionic woman gone bad. Alas, while it's fine to have a villain who is more colorful than your hero, it's not so fine to have a supporting actor who makes your star vanish whenever they're on screen together. It makes you think that what this remake of a spinoff really needs is a spinoff of its own. None of this means the show won't draw a crowd, at least initially. The ads are terrific (far better than the show they're promoting), and there is a fan base that likes its fantasies somber and its heroines pouty. Which may be why Bionic plays like it was created, not so much to run on TV, but to provide panels for comic book conventions

"ED" or "Mack" or whatever that one is with the guy who has all the government secrets in his brain. "Ned?" Except the sleazy buddy character needs to be slapped around a bit. That pilot had better action in the first ten minutes then Bionic had for the whole hour (although the guy who did all the action then died). Bionic girl's Dr. (son of an evil Dr.) boyfriend, is very, very creepy. "Reaper" was surprisingly entertaining, I actually am adding it to the Tivo. Bionic won't be Tivo'd unless I'm compelled to watch another episode and it's a lot better. I found it kind of dull actually, with a lot of people standing around looking off in the distance, to create a false sense of depth.

if they can successfully move away from the show becoming a one trick pony where every episode is either about dealing with being a cyborg or just getting the bad guy of the week using bionics. The show will also need to go somewhere/evolve to avoid going stale. Characters, relationships, objectives, episode focus etc need to change and grow. They did it successfully when they remade BSG so I have some hopes but Galactica has some advantages in that it has a large cast (with great actors) set in a large, fantasy universe. The very nature of a show called "Bionic Woman" set in the "real world" seems to indicate that all the themes will center around one person which would make broadening the show's universe much harder to do.

Best described as dark in a bad way. The heroine is bizarrely pissed off at her boyfriend for saving her life. The attempt to create an aura of some kind of "conspiracy" falls flat because there's no clue that they've even thought of one. And there are lots of logic holes: Katee Sackhoff figures out the very best way to kill a scientist would be to ram a truck into the passenger side of his car? Really? And then not take the extra 30 seconds to check and see if he's dead? Really? And that's the best-looking effect you can come up with for running really fast? The best thing I can really say is that the main girl has a ridiculously good-looking set of lips.

After Galactica is over, it'd be great to see the writers have the two fembots switch the chips in their heads (or some other plot device) so that Katee could be the lead. Hey, Faith was bad in BTVS and then turned out good...it wouldn't have to be THAT much of a stretch.

Some shows are stellar from the first episode...others take time to grow into something good..Babylon 5 was pants in the first series but then took off...I am not convinced that the idea was good...t'was a bad show back in the day...but what the hey...any sci-fi is better than no sci-fi...with BSG finishing, what do we really have on TV? As for the lead: give her a few shows...she's a Brit actress who's never done action...Katee's been doing it for over 3 years - she's had practice to be good...lets see Katie do the roles that Michelle did in the UK - she'd be wiped off the screen.

Then forget this supposed abortion of a Bionic Woman ever happened? The main character looks generic and bland and from what I've seen, acts that way. Katee's character has spice and that's something people want to see nowadays. People aren't interested in the goody-goody characters from yesteryear anymore. They want people with flaws because it comes off as more realistic as opposed to the perfect boy or or in this case, girl-scout type. Me, I'll just watch it cause I want to see Katee kick some ass.

Original Bionic Woman

11:14:11 AM
To be fair, the original Bionic Woman, w/ few exceptions, was a bad show. Badly written, that is. The only reason it worked was because of the star, Lindsay Wagner. The problem w/ all these remake shows is that the creators start w/ the premise and try to capture the magic, but the magic was in the actors, not the premise. So let me state this as clearly as I can. Lindsay Wagner was and still is the Bionic Woman in the same way that Darren McGavin is Carl Kolchak, William Shatner is Captain Kirk, Peter Sellars is Inspector Clouseau, and so on. Just put the original Bionic Woman on DVD and leave the rest alone.

Their new president actually has decided to take a slow and steady approach. Which is a good thing.

Suck, sorry I don't care about Bionic Women looks wicked lame. Chuck was good, and so was Reaper and they pretty much are the same show. But John Larroquette on LEGAL was HORRIBLE! It looked like he was about laugh the whole time, this may be the jumped the shark reason for probably the best show on TV. Unless they make Kirk follow through on his promise to Maltz. I miss Odo. Again for bionic women... British Actress, was that NBC's plan this year, make a whole bunch of shows starring British people, they make better TV shows anyway. Bionic Women will suck because it takes to much time to make good special effects shows, why do you think Battlestar takes forever with new episodes.

had they gone with the high-energy, athletic iconic approach, since today fitness is bigger than in the 70's-- merchandising, sneakers, everything. Instead, it's the same washed out color, depressing characters and convoluted dead end plots wrapped in soap opera. Hollywood, the whole "dark" thing is so cliche now even the smarmy reviews in newspapers don't think it's hip anymore. You can have dark themes in your script, without having to put main characters in dark clothes, under low lights, dripping attitude like sweat. Two supermoodels on a sunny beach, plotting crime, that's dark. Gritty, grainy film and yet another rain splattered fight is just superficial frills. And if they're doing angst, stop selling the show as rip-roaring action with those commercials. Pony up for the location shoots, saquatch and bionic props, then you'll have a show. Write the freshness into the character. The star is nice, though.

Spoilers.....The amount of resentment that she piles on her boyfriend is ridiculous. This is a woman that would be dead without the nanotech. She acts as if the powers that be mutilated her body and cut off her existing limbs! They could even have got some mileage from the old "what is it to be human?" routine that Robocop and Blade Runner did so well. However, Bionic Woman just comes off as shallow as hell. You have GOT to be kidding us with this review. Somebody paying you for this crap?

Wild mood swings from watching this -- from uproarious laughter at the utter ridiculousness of the script to pulse-pounding anger that THIS is how they bring back the Bionic Woman. Utter freakin' trash!

Dude, take one freakin' second and equate "bionics" to, say, an F-22 Raptor. 'Kay? Now, what are the chances that a "scientist" manages to "give" one to his girlfriend (with special surgery, mind you) without the knowledge and advice of ALL his superiors?!?!?

Especial ly considering how the last one apparently went "rogue!"

What, they're just tossin' bionics out with Happy Meals down at the ol' Bionics Barn?!?!? Buy one bionic leg, get the second one (and arm and eye and ear and...) free?

Yeah, even though the last test subject went absolutely bat shit fucking crazy and starting killing motherfuckers like she was from Virginia Tech, we're just gonna leave ALL these other bionic parts over here COMPLETELY unsupervised. We work on the honor system here at Fuckwit Systems, Inc. (A DefCon Subsidiary)!

ALSO, I've got another CRAZY question! Say you're the handsome young scientist whose girlfriend has just lost various body parts in an horrific accident and just say that you convince yourself that SHE can take the transition when the LAST CHICK went all psycho killer, right?

Now say you manage to sneak her past super high-tech security and deep into your lab at Fuckwit Systems, Inc. (A DefCon Subsidiary) and slap those bad boys bionics complete with "nano-technology" onto her before ANYBODY is the wiser, right? Still with me?

Now SAY that you're gonna spring the big surprise about her ALL NEW and IMPROVED BIONIC LIMBS on her when she wakes up, okay? So, knowing what you knowing about the last loony bitch and the bloody body part redecorating that SHE DID and the incredibly tremendous shock that this is gonna be to your main squeeze and how she's gonna hafta get used to her new SUPER STRENGTH,...

Wouldn't you want to, oh, I don't know, maybe say turn the power setting down to like a "2" or "3" so that, on the OFF CHANCE, that she DOES FREAK OUT that she DOESN'T slam your dumb, mad scientist ass across the room?

Maybe? Huh? Good idea there?

And this, folks, is just the beginning of the inane, idiocies in the story of a young urban slacker chick who is magically gifted with top secret, highly experimental, very costly upgrades that may have turned the last chick that got 'em into a psychopathic killing machine by her mad scientist boyfriend without anybody stopping him or even knowing about it.

Yes, sir, Herc, a real fuckin' winner here!

Of the "big" premieres I was looking forward to (Heroes, Chuck, Journeyman, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Bionic), this is BY FUCKING FAR, the worst of the bunch. I will absolutely NEVER watch this horrid piece of shit again.

Journeyman, on the other hand, was great and NOT to be missed.

I was merely pointing out that by the standards of most cat-suited SUPERHEROES, she's a bit on the thick side. Just odd that a major network cast someone who isn't exactly of the usual athletic, lanky thinness that has become a standard for such characters. Maybe it's just her lantern jaw that's giving me a misperception, but in every poster and promo, I've seen Ryan stuffed into a bursting, unflattering blouse or jacket. Just an odd casting choice, like if Superman was played by an actor with a beer gut and Peter Boyle's hair pattern.

This show was horrible. And, to the person who felt the original pilot (the one they refilmed, which had the sister being deaf, etc.) 'rocked'... wtf are you smoking? I saw that pilot, and it was absolutely just as bad.

Let's see... we have a poorly written show with an uncharismatic main character, insipid co-stars making illogical decisions.... I know, let's change the sister! That will fix it all!

I agree that Ryan is simply wrong for the part. (And her chin and doughy face don't help, no matter how good she may have been in other roles) However, I thought Sackhoff was terrible too. People seem to think that 'being evil' equates to 'being cool.' Sure, her backstory is more interesting than the main character's, (not that that's very difficult), but the god-awful dialogue sounds just as ludicrous when Sackhoff says it as when Ryan does, and she has continued her signature trait of badly overacting.

It's amazing that it took less than an hour for the show to take an interesting and time tested premise and make it so incredibly uncool.

One of the problems here is tone... Eick just tried to graft the grim tone of BSG onto "Bionic Woman," when the material here needed to be at least a little more fun and light-hearted. It doesn't have to be camp, but how about a show where at least it doesn't seem to be gray-skyed or raining every five seconds with people moping around all over the place? I mean, on BSG, they've just lost their whole f'ckin civilization, so the grim tone works, but c'mon, with "Bionic Woman" vary your style a little bit or get accused of being a one-trick pony. For one thing, the woman just wakes up and discovers that instead of having her arm and legs amputated she's now a super-being, and her response is mopey depression instead of "Whaaaa-hoooo?" Give me a break.

I neither liked it or hated it. I have to agree that Ryan seems to miscast for the role, but it may just be the writing. She went from shrieking, freaked out harpy to clam, cool fighting machine in record time and with little explanation.

On the plus side the special effects where pretty good and the final fight between Ryan and Sackhoff was fairly well done. However, I have to believe two bionic arms > one bionic arm. No way Jaime Sommers should have won that fight.

Episode 3 needs to be the one where Jamie Sommers teaches her sister how to satisfy a woman. I mean DAMN ! I'd love to see Grandma Sommers, because she had some smoking hot genes she passed down the food chain. That being said, it's got promise - nice pacing, very stylish and decent acting. The writing just needs to catch up. I'll give it a few episodes, since it's clear the Pilot and first couple are just setting the stage. Oh, and does anyone know if those blood additives will regrow the bionic woman's cherry ? Just curious.

I'm a big fan of David Eich for "Battlestar Galactica," but five minutes into "Bionic Woman" I was cringing inwardly. That was far, far worse than what I expected. The problem -- and it's a fucking huge one -- is that Jamie is a boring character. The characters around her are kind of cool, but she's paper thin and yawn-inducingly boring. I was looking forward to her interactions with the deaf sister, but apparently they canned the deaf sister and gave Jamie a fucking pissant bitch who's as paper thin as Jamie.

Wow, I'm disappointed. That sucked. I definitely won't be watching next week.

I'm willing to give it six episodes or so for characters and plots to develop. Jaime was kinda whiny and reluctant in the pilot, but... she just got turned into a half-robot! Does all character development have to take place in the pilot, or can we see where it goes from here before judgment is passed? I think it's got potential, especially if they are willing to throw in some weird, even super-powered adversaries. And Michelle Ryan has nice, bouncy boobs. :)

Not all character development needs to take place in the pilot, I agree, but I prefer writing that instantly drops viewers into an compelling emotional landscape. I'm not one of those people who's willing to wait till episode seven for something cool to happen, so I'm already not on board.

I have to say I actually prefer the original to this. This hit every bit of a tired post-modern remake, right down to the scenes in the rain, the shaky camerawork and "lost-in-the-tussle" fight staging, and the chick-rock musical beats and motifs. Really wasn't that inspired. But Sackhoff truly is a delight. She's really proving to be someone to keep around for a long while.

if they show doesn't get us to care about Jamie and if there is no consistency with the writing. *Spoilers* when the scientists meet and tell of Jamie's loyalty to her sister and how smart she is, but then we watch several scenes implying that Jamie didn't want to survive the accident one does see the inconsistency. And Jamie's attitude and approach to the Big Boss-Man at the end, should have ended with her getting the old bullit in the brain-pan. Folks if they started another "Jamie Summers" next week this miscast wouldn't be missed. The other actors didn't have anything to work with, you would keep waiting for a little more but the writing leaves you hanging but not in a good tense sort of hanging. Yes, Sackhoff was really good. And I hope this role prevents any "Battlestar" type-casting. However she is moving from one military scifi role to another. The supermax escape was dumb to say the least, very tired and cliched. The theory they can't stop Jamie is crap. It's called a taser, and besides temporarily shortening out her nervous system, it would fry her new bionic (electric, the hardwire is shown) implants. Not the crappy police tasers, I'm talking the heavy military grade stuff that most people don't hear about. The ones they use to shorten out EMP hardened equipment and vehicles when they want a target intact.

Bionic Woman?
by L.H.Puttgrass
Sep 27th, 2007
01:05:45 AM
Did I miss something? In the original shows, bionic meant cyborg. Man and machine put together in one body. Body parts made out of plastic, rubber, steel, etc. All under the control of a human brain.

If you damage bionic parts you will get torn rubber skin and arcing electronic parts. Not blood.

This new bionic woman has been created by nanotechnology. It looks like the nanobots have regenerated her body parts on a genetic level. Using her DNA to "clone" these new parts and also improve them for strength.

When she cut her hand it bled. When she was running they showed her leg muscles getting stronger "inside" her leg. Sarah said the nanobots repair the entire body. Allowing her to smoke without any health concerns about cancer or lung disease.

This show seems more like a female Jake 2.0 than a bionic woman. Here's a thought. If the nanobots take care of the whole body, why do they only strengthen the parts that were missing? Eh?

I told my friend to start looking for work on a new series, this won't last long. It's interesting you know so many details on how this fictional technology works. I would think if you were creating a supersoldier, and the use of non-lethal weapons like tasers were becoming widespread, the bionic soldier would have some kind of resistance to it. As for Jaime's preferring to have died, isn't it possible for a character to have some mixed feelings about things? Yes, maybe if given the option to choose to live with the technology she would have, but she wakes up and finds tiny robots crawling around inside her body. I think some freaking out is in order.

I suppose you could argue Evil Bionic Woman is just sort of enamored with another Bionic woman to bond with, but there's definitely a lesbian vibe going on, at least with Katee's character. That scene in the bar looked like she was trying to pick her up. Of course, Hollywood seems to like to make evil women lesbians like they're all "bad girls" or something. Ryan showed a tiny bit of potential when she was promising to bury anyone that was sent after her. Katie was awesome. But, NBC shook up the production so I expect we need to wait a few episodes to see what the show is really like.

Of Sackhoff. I'm sure if she were my next door neighbor, yeah, I'd think she were a cutie. Other than that, she looks average. And yes the dialogue had some hoke to it, but other than that I thought it was entertaining--and Ryan is very very watchable ("guys! my EYES are up HERE"). And WHAT is NOT to like about girl-on-girl fighting?
The rest of the season will be online...

Katie Sakoff was excellent. And her character really

does stand out from any baddie I've seen before. she se,ms like a once but very taumitises woman, hiding some inner turmoil that would twist anyones head off. I expect the writers have big plans for her back story. The writing is there Sakoff deliver its promise brilliantly. Ironically, with all the time Eick and co spend on developing the bad Bionic, we don'tb really seem to be getting a dep look into the main character Jamie Sommers. We keep getting told she's special but the script seems a little too focused on showing how normal she is with normal problems, propelled into secret gov scary land. A normal girl, suddenly stuck in a big, very bad world. And that's all well and good but given that Sakoff has been given something so distinctive interesting to chew on. I can only hope that having had the scared normal girl moments we can see what makes her special, and develop a more disnictve character. I think Ryan has the skills if the script gives her the opportunities. Saddluy, while Eick does excellent suspence and intruiging plots. Steven Moffat, Ryan's last writer/producer is a bit sharper on dialogue and establishing strong characters, both mains and supporting from the get go, and continuing to develop them from there. In Eick's case I think all the characters will be more than worth watching. But it'll take a bit long to get throught outter layers.

It's funny that he cited Alexander. I agree with Spyguy in that she screwed up Birds of Prey which should've been easy to make cool. Aside from messing with Black Canary, why exactly was the daughter of Batman and Catwoman a mutant with cat powers?

Reminded me too much of MUTANT X, CHARLIE'S ANGLES, CLEOPATRA 2525, ANDROMEDA etc. with the phony-baloney leaping and sub-par martial art girl fights. Watching this stuff week to week..no way.

Here is a definitive forecast from a grizzled old veteran (TV watcher):

Dirty Sexy Money is wildly entertaining - it will not make it past season two.

Bionic Woman is as good as Heroes (and by good I mean bad) - and thus will probably own its hour (until everybody gets past the initial candy coating to realize that the brown soft center aint chocolate).

Private Practice's (unavoidable) failure was put into motion on the day that Rhimes decided to gentrify the Addison character away from her original hot east-coast trampy roots.

I feel somehow less than a man right now.

OK, Jamie's like, waht, 24 or something? And her daughter (it is her daughter, right?) is like 14?

So did she have a kid when she was 10?

The music was waaaaay over the top, but it has potential.

AND LOOK! IT'S THE CHIEF! AND ROMO!

not too bad

yeah the dialogue was pretty cheesy and the directing was choppy, but there were some fun moments, some neat special effects (like when she ran for the first time), a couple of good fight scenes and yes, Katee Starbot rocked it.

It's called Science Fiction. In order for it to be plausible it needs to have some type conection to reality. Besides tasers work on the human body and short out electronic devices. It's interesting that in the world today you are not aware of non-ficitonal technology.

who couldn't fucking stand this show at all from the moment they started playing theater ads for it? Nothing about it looks good AT ALL. Turning into a cyborg doesn't reflect the struggle of the modern woman, fuck you! I really hope this piece of crap gets canceled immediately.

I may be one of the few people/females on this site who watched the original show when it was in syndication when I was growing up. This piece of tripe has nothing that made the first Bionic Woman a huge favorite for me when I was growing up. I am so pissed off! I should have expected it, but I thought for sure BSG folks would put their heads into it. So many things went wrong, but the ones that haven't been mentioned are the fine details of the relationship of the bionics to the character. That was what I loved about the old show. Jaime Summers didn't just pop off the bed for the first time and strut over to a window and say "Boo". ARGHHH! Before that I was cringing so hard, just praying that Ryan's Jaime wouldn't do such a pathetically predictable thing. But she did and more stomach turning, groan inducing moments of heinous dialogue and predicatable behavior would follow. Hello, seen Catwoman? seen any uber chick movie lately like in the past 10 years? well, you've seen this year's BW. Where is the Jaime that has to learn how to even fucking move!? The Jaime that has to learn how to walk using artificial legs for the first time. Where's the Jaime that can't hold onto anything without it exploding in her bionic hand? How many glasses and cartons of milk did Wagner's Jaime go through until she had some idea of how to control it. AND she never became a perfect master over the bionics. There was always the occasionally bent door handle or broken thing-a-majig that just popped in her hand. Her emotions would often affect her control. Furthermore, when I tune in to see a bionic woman, I want to see A BIONIC woman not some freaking cyborg! I guess I can kiss off any cool scenes where Jaime is stuck in some silo she fell down and is having to talk to Oscar over a 2 way radio and has to peel back her skin while Oscar talks her through some 'this may not work' jerry-rigged self repair. Don't get me started on the lack of a decent Oscar character. Evil controlling corporation instead. Wow, that is so fresh, so new. Dear writers, the 1980's called and they want their plot devices back. Will we get to see Jaime try to explain to an onlooker why she didn't notice that her foot was on fire!? 'Cause those are fake legs! She can't feel! Not just forking away the first night she gets home. First BW: No pain, no feeling of anykind. And she really hates that! Just another reminder that she is separate parts, but that she is cool with those parts because it sure as hell beats the alternative! No whinny "Why!? why me?! Come closer so I can crush you now with my awesome super strength." 5-minute fiance should have said, I put the legs on you and I can take them off. Your call, bee-otch. Oh and unfortunately, we also had to amputate your personality and are still working on it. We are working with Microsoft for a patch for it before we upload it back. But since it was so freaking small in the first place, we are having more problems than expected. Where is the sense of adventure, the joie de vivre? Wagner's Jaime was fun. She had a self-deprecating sense of humor. She was always making off the cuff remarks to herself. Not hard to write this stuff. Some vulnerability would have been a good choice too. Invincibility is so freaking boring. Basic knowledge BW people, every fanboy and girl knows this shit. I could go on and on. But I feel a little bit better venting some of it. Probably much more than anyone wanted to read. But damn, I am so truly and thoroughly disappointed that I wish I "had a time bomb, but, oh, one would need time to use a time bomb"(followed by Evil Snicker by Irish actor who is the same age as the guy who is playing his son) WTF!
Sackhoff should be POWER GIRL in Justice League movie!

...for TV IMHO (unless she's doing well written BSG scripts, of course - but that's another story).

She should just leave TV and just do movies. I see her career having a Johnny Depp-like trajectory (i.e. 21 JUMP Street to movies--to Blockbuster movies)

A misfire

Right after she beat up the mugger in one of the most hackneyed scenes in recent TV history, somehow gaining mastery of martial arts along with her bionic legs and arm, I looked at my wife, said "this show sucks," hit dash twice, and moved on. No sale. Of course, it'll probably be a huge hit...
