You have to give it up for Vaughn's writing. I just discovered "Runaways" and am almost done with V2, but I was still amazed at the pitch-perfect dialog he wrote for this issue. You can hear the distinctive voices of the performers reading this stuff and it really captures the Buffyverse vibe.

Yes, the art is frequently lackluster, but you takes whats you can gets at times.

So it's all about the art then? I thought that, after the great start, the Whedon scripted Buffy became a little too dense. Everything happened so fast, the pacing was al over the place. This episode by Vaugh showed what was missing: calm. Yes, the art wasn't much to write home about (no pun intened), but give me a good script over mediocre pencils anytime. Stan Lee in 'In Search Of Ditko'

Now I'm all for Marvel Gods other than Lee getting their proper credit and remuneration, but when Jonathan Ross pressed Lee on whether he thought Steve Ditko co-created Spider-Man, Stan admitted he really believed that he (Lee) was the 'creator.' His argument (and I'm paraphrasing and embellishing) was that coming up with the idea (which he didn't always, eg the Silver Surfer) is the 'creation', and getting someone else to design the character, however brilliantly, is not. I can see his point. Did De Niro or Brando ever 'create' their characters? They brought them to life, sure. But they don't own copyright (correct me if I'm wrong, Brando probably negotiated it sometime in return for one less island of ice-cream). Even on something as participant-driven as Curb Your Enthusiasm, where actors aren't given a script but expected to improvise and create in their own manner - The Marvel Method - that series says 'created by Larry David.'

And since I'm in the confessional, I'll admit one other embarrassing faux pas: I never picked up a copy of PLANETARY until it was well over. Then I got a chance to read the first two issues (late last year), and I was completely, utterly blown out of the water. I got the whole series and read them in a day with more fanboy glee than I've felt in probably a decade.

(it was pretty horrendous), why no mention of the story? I really liked it and felt sorry for Faith throughout the episode. She gets the shit assignments because people figure she's fractured anyway so what's the harm? How is someone supposed to heal if everyone treats her like she's broken? Giles takes any opportunity to shield Buffy from the world (it happened a few times in the series as well), but Faith can get all darkside, no problem. I'm sure this is leading somewhere, hopefully with Faith taking a stand for herself and telling the rest of these control freaks to do their own dirty work.

1) WolfmanNards - go read the original Marvel WW Hulk press release, in which I am directly quoted and named. Then go finger your own sphincter.

2) To others regarding lack of reviewing the Buffy plot and/or praise of Vaughn:

It is clearly stated in the review that Jeanty has "pissed away" the highly-lauded Vaughn's main character, which itself implies that Vaughn knows exactly what he's doing. A lot of the reviews tend to focus on the plot, and what with it gone over to death both here and elsewhere (I do note in the review, had you read it, that he has introduced an evil slayer), I felt it was time to focus on the art, or lack thereof. Not doing so would have been a disservice to the lovely Ms. Dushku.

I believe Stan Lee's only instructions to Ditko were basically "a teen hero called Spider-Man who the readers can relate to", or something along those lines. But bacci40, calling the guy a "fucker" is very harsh. Although his reply to the question "did Steve Ditko co-create Spider-Man" ("I dream up the guy and give him to anyone to draw") was pretty cold, he's 84 or something and fading memory must play a part, not to mention that interview got pretty hung up on the semantics of the word "create" - Stan obviously takes it to mean whoever comes up with the idea of a character called Spider-Man, while by today's comic book standards, the artist who designs the character is almost always credited as co-creator.

test, does this work?

does anyone remember that old Bob Newhart show where he was a comic book creator and he went to a convention and met like Todd McFarlene or someone. That's what I thought of when reading the introduction inviting people to the comic convention, I don' t know why, but I did

now on a related note, yeah the buffy artwork sucked, but the story is good like everyone has mentioned, including in the review

I'm over my hate of Buffy "Season 8" title and am just going to live with it, however I still think it would be a hot if some non traditonal comic show had the balls to do this, like Season 6 of NewsRadio or something, or Sienfeild, the comic!

The Bram Stroker book looks excellent, I'm going to have to pick that up...

'Illusion of Change"
by StepJeriTai
Sep 26th, 2007
11:29:26 AM
I think you may be over-dramatizing the whole "Illusion of..." rant. I agree that the over-blown hype and over-stayed welcome surrounding certain storylines is obvious. However, the fact is that all characters (real and fictional) at their core go through the same 'illusions'. People go through trials every day, but once the trials have come and gone, when all is said and done they are the same people, only 'slightly modified' if you will. I think Marvel's mistake in particular was bringing up the whole phrase "Illusion of Change" in the 1st place. It makes lesser minds think less of their (arguably) creative efforts.

I'd bet this is the way WWH ends
by Jinxo
Sep 26th, 2007
06:01:17 PM
Warning: Fake, guessing spoilers

The last issue of WWH put in my mind exactly how they might end this sucker. If I'm right it's interesting because it will let Hulk win, bitch slap the Illuminati but leave folks alive and still be semi-satisfying.

So last issue had Hulk pointing out all the crap the Illuminati has pulled that would rival the trouble they claim Hulk has caused in the past. He's now subjecting them to the same trails and humiliations they forced him to go through. I think he will put them through their paces until they're on the brink of death. Then he'll back off. Not out of weakness but because that has always been his plan. Not to kill them but to torture them and revile them as they have done to him and then at the end prove himself better than them by showing them the mercy they would never show him. So he gets to give them the punishment and pain they are due and then also walks out morally superior. How much bigger of a bitch-slap can the braniacs get than to come out looking morally inferior to the freakin' Hulk? Not quite as good as him actually killing them but, for me, I think that would still be pretty good.

Then I think there could also be some surprise final smackdown. The Illuminati were pretty solid on saying they did not plant the bomb that blew the Hulk's ship up. Assuming that is true, the very end should be the reveal on the real culprit and that guy taking the real beating.

The arc where he teamed up with Catwoman and Etrigan to fight a magic skeleton-thing who was actually five dead Nazis was particularly subtle. The "Cat Signal" is a Moment in comics history.

The question I find myself asking now, though, is "why?" Why bring back Tommy Monaghan now? Why put him in the spotlight again? What have they got cooking?

Maybe it's a story that he had wanted to tell when the series was still going. I think he had actually planned to go ten more issues before ending, but low sales and all. But I mostly think that he just missed Tommy (I know I sure do). He has said as much in the past. That he could written Hitman forever, simply because it was so much fun. My favorite bits from Hitman: - Cat-signal of course - Natt trying to squeeze through the tank's hatch - Tiegel's resolution - Hacken's knee-jerk reaction to being bitten by a zombie seal - The epilogue to The Old Dog - Friendly Fire's death - Tommy killing that rotten fuck of a father - Ringo finally telling his backstory

Unlikely that seeds are being planted for some sort of return, then. Not that Ennis could just carry on with new contemporary stories after the perfect way he wrapped it up, obviously, but maybe they could do a retro-continuity "Tales of the Hitman" mini to ramp up for a new line of trades. Or something.

Hell, just release the trades with one or two new backup stories and I'm sure there would be a lot of happy readers.

they are still relying on characters that are 50 years old. How many times can you kill a relative, bring them back, clone them, clone their enemies, etc? There is also the fact that no matter how much we would love change as long time readers, new readers would be baffled by any change like the new Flash (Wally West/Bart Allen) and Green Lantern. In the end we are at fault for wanting to keep Green Lantern as Hal Jordan and Peter Parker as Spiderman not Ben Reilly or whatever he was called. Comic book writers and their major publishers (DC and Marvel) should kill them off and start creating new ones.

Ok the thumbs down is the easy way out of this for Hulk. He still isnt killing...simply ordering someone else to do it for him. It has brought on an interesting question...can Banner pull the strings at will after all? True, this will probably amount to nothing but another mini series. Isn't it gonna be called WWH Warbound or some crap? Sentry calms Hulk down with minimum action and the illuminati gets off with cuts and bruises....yippie. What would have been an interesting way to go with this.....reintroduce Thor in this with Thor giving those sidekicks (yes I remember they were great on Saakar) the beatdown and sort of siding with Hulk, especially with Goldilocks so pissed about his being cloned by Tony Stark/Reed Richards. Oh by the way, wasn't Thor #3 and Mortal Man in Metal Suit Having His Ass Handed to Him the best ever? "Walk."

I thought that was already established during Planet Hulk that Meik or the Brood or one of the other Warbound actually rigged the ship to explode because they wanted the prophecy that the Hulk was the Worldbreaker to come true. I also thought there was an issue where Meik gets pissed at the Hulk because while he found happiness on Planet Hulk with a wife and kid, Meik was rendered the last of a dying species since the Hulk and Co. was unable to save his Queen Mother. Anyone remember those issues? Am I way off base here?

Bug, you are probably right on target there. I missed reading Planet Hulk figuring to catch it in trade paperback. In that case then, they still could do a reveal on that info to the Hulk which would... well... screw everybody. Because then they can end it with Hulk realizing everybody on both sides of WWH has screwed him over. But in the end, Mrs. Garrett will help him learn a valuable life lesson from the whole debacle. No, wait... that's Facts Of Life. The Hulk and Natalie, I always mix those two up.

Stan & Credit

To understand Stan taking credit for sole creatorship of the Marvel icons, all you have to do is read anything about those old time comic guys. They all took credit for everything. Stan was just in a position to give it the official seal of approval. I mean, Kirby also took full credit but he didn't run the company or write a book about how he created this or that.

I've read interviews with Kirby where he called himself the creator of Spider-Man. While I'm sure he did a concept sketch or something, anybody who has ever read an issue of Spider-Man and an issue of, say, KAMANDI THE LAST BOY ON EARTH, knows that Jack didn't have jack to do with Spider-Man. (And put it back in yer pants, guys, Kirby was a genius, the King, the visual creator of Marvel, the sole creator of Silver Surfer but Elvis didn't record JOHNNY B. GOOD, ya know). This is as ridiculous as Joe Simon was when he took full credit for CAPTAIN AMERICA, which was as Kirby as you can get without being about a race of lost cosmic people.

But if you look at, say, Bob Kane. Yeah, he created BATMAN, but he'll tell you he created Robin, the Joker, all the stuff Bill Finger brought into the mix.

It's ironic, in the unescapable AGE OF THE WRITER, that the party line is to deny Stan credit. Look at this talkback, for example. A reviewer does a well written piece of Buffy that focuses on the art (an important point because if you really love comics, bad art can take you out of a good story) ... and it ain't a comic book without the art, but it can be a comic book without a single written word ... and he gets undeserved flack.

IMHO, a comic book superhero, especially an icon, is both a character and visual concept. Ditko himself once made that point, and even Stan sort of conceded it (although probably not permanently, which is cool). It is fair to say Stan created this or that. It's also fair to say Ditko created Spider-Man, Kirby created the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, etc.

Really, all you have to do is look at what each of these guys did without the other and you get the equivalent of the former Beatles albums. The work all has its' merits, but BAND ON THE RUN or PLASTIC ONO BAND isn't exactly SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND, ya know. Just like SHE-HULK isn't THE INCREDIBLE HULK or THE QUESTION isn't THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN or THE NEW GODS isn't THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

In today's comic scene, it is sad how much the contributions of the artist are dismissed. We have the founding fathers of Image to thank you that, because they were seen as and believed themselves to be the Second Coming of the American Comic book but only Erik Larsen had any real writing ability (because he knew his limitations). All the others were faking it and of the fakers, only McFarlane had any skill at that. Their "writing" was unintentionally like the comics that, say, sixth grade kids do in the back of their notebooks. You had the Liefield Kid who proably wouldn't have written a word if he could have gotten it past his buddies and on the other end of the spectrum you've got the McFarlane Kid who could do a reasonable pastiche of Frank Miller doing a supernatural comic.

I've got a modest filmmaking background, so I tend to look at comics like filmmaking. In the past, comics were like films, with the writer in the subordinate role as screenwriter (except for Stan who was both screenwriter, producer and studio boss) and the artist as director. Now, comics are like T.V. with the writer as writer/producer/show runner/whatever and the artist, if he or she is allowed and at their msot creative, as maybe ... MAYBE...cinematographer and film editor.

I think you should just get ready to cut and paste that one about twice a year. :^) And, for a TV show cancelled before its time that deserves a comic, that's easy: UNDECLARED!!!!

I just wanted to say thanks to you, Ambush Bug, for taking the time to review this. This OGN was a hell of a lot of fun to put together (sadly, we have to wait until the December Diamond Previews to order the TPB), and I'm glad you enjoyed it. And I can't say I disagree about the cellar-scene exposition. I flip-flopped a few times about whether or not to slow the pacing there. And keep an eye out for the artist (Mike Henderson). I absolutely love his work, and his pages in Smuggling Spirits has already landed him an upcoming Image gig with a well-known DC writer ... Anyway -- thanks!
