Denzel would be decent in the Shaw role. The whole structure of the film is based around a clever but otherwise regular guy who works in the city bureaucracy outsmarting the really sophisticated criminals. I can't buy Washington as a regular guy who works for the MTA, but I can totally see him as a sophisticated criminal.

If reports of this remake had come out just a few short years ago there would have been scores of talkbacks about how this is a terrible idea, and how Hollywood should be making original ideas instead. Notice today though that nobody yet has really got angered by this. We've sadly reached the point now where news like this is met with blase acceptance. We tolerate the endless stream of remakes as if it's the norm. Well it shouldn't be.
Come on people, remember the time when getting something original was the norm. You should be getting angered by this and writing blistering talkbacks. Sure, they won't make any difference at all and the film will still get made anyway. But it'll make you feel better.

You cannot improve on the original = don't remake this
by Mullah Omar

There is NO REASON for this remake. I am not an automatic opponent of remakes, but why do this one? Remake "Clash of the Titans", a fantastic spectacle about Greek gods and heroes? Yes, Harryhausen did a great job, but there is honestly a lot that could be improved in that film. Remake "Pelham", an FX-less 70s caper film completely rooted in reality? No, the actors were wonderful and modern editing/FX won't make any difference. This remake is pointless because I do not believe the filmmakers can do better than the original.

I agree. Clash Of The Titans would make sense to remake, but not Pehlam or Escape From New York or all these others. Yeah, I don't automatically hate all remakes. Certainly there used to be at least a little more of a common sense approach to remakes. But not these days. So far, the worst remake has got to be the terrible remake of Vanishing Point. HOLY CRAP! That remake was THEE SHITTIEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!

The original movie is relatively slow-moving, as interested in the inner workings of the MTA as it is in the crime, and develops a very cordial and professional relationship between the criminals and the professionals. Clearly Tony Scott will gut all that, so what are you left with? Another whiz-bang heist movie. Why bother getting the rights?
Lack of originality and lack of respect for classics
by Lornsorrow
Sep 23rd, 2007
06:58:44 PM
that is all that it comes down to these days. No originality, and the belief that they can "improve" or "modernize" a classic, (which means they don't really see it as a "classic" otherwise they would just leave it be). Highly unlikely we will ever see a remake of Star Wars, or The Godfather. Somehow, they have made it to that "untouchable" category (so it seems). But anything "in between" is fair game? Bullshit. Just because one "can" figure out a way to do something a little different doesn't mean one should do it. Hey, lets go back to the moon, but this time lets do it a little bit different. Instead, lets have (blah blah blah). Pointless.

Clive Owen...? I love the original so I don't think the world needs a remake (it was a perfect time capsule of NYC in the 70s). However, if Denzel is doing it and it's half as good as INSIDE MAN it could be decent. (Maybe Spike Lee should do it and not Tony Scott? With Clive doing Robert Shaw?) Lee Wallace, Doris Roberts and Tony Roberts as a Koch-like Mayor and company were the best part of the movie. Oddly, the movie was done years before Koch was elected mayor so it seemed kind of prophetic -- like Peter Sellers playing Dr Strangelove like Kissinger years before Kissinger was Sec. of State. Great movie, guys, don't fuck up the remake and film it in Toronto!

Didn't Denzel kind of do this already with "The Inside Man." Okay so it was a bank and not a train, but the "how the heck are these guys gonna get outta there" and the tit-for-tat between Clive Owne and Denzel was very reminiscint of the relationship between Robert Shaw and Matthau in "Pelham 123." And "Inside Man" was a distinctly of-the-times NYC movie much in the same way "Pelham 123" was. Plus, didn't they already do a shitty remake of "Pelham 123" with Admiral Adama? Come on Hollywood. Think up something new! let Fat Caz Delowitz rest in peace!

Never saw DOG DAY AFTERNOON, but I did see the original PELHAM. The similarities are numerous:

Hostage situation with level-headed British antagonist vs. determined New York City cop (while taking time to engage in amusing banter with his partner). The antagonist's associates have similar codenames, while the hostages are of different character types.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

The original is way overrated. Not even close to the same league as "Charley Varrick." It's a fairly middling 70s thriller where the whole tension is based on one of the heisters being a loose cannon, and the ending for Shaw's character was awful. If there is anything that irritates me more than lavishing praise well beyond the level of which it is deserved and thus ruining the enjoyment of a movie, it's the generic "no more remakes" complaints that sprout up whenever any of these are announced. You assholes turn the internet into a haven for whiny bitches. Get over it.

Of course Pelham is not in the same league as Charley Varrick. They are two totally different kinds of films. Yeah, they are both thrillers of a sort, but honestly they are very different kinds of films. I love Charley Varrick. Wish they would release it in a Widescreen version, but until then, I'll make do with the full screen I have. Varrick is arguably Walter Matthau's finest role/performance. Simply an outstanding film.

Kick ass theme

Why even try to remake this? The thing I love in Pelham is that because of the theme you know you are in for a badass movie within one second. You don't even start the movie. There's no way a remake could top that (only competition for most immediately badass movie is Long Good Friday).

THEY can just remake a movie, whenever they want to, on a whim. I agree, I think it would be cool to remake it right, but you know it won't be done right. Wouldn't it be great if all original scripts and franchise rights were housed in one place, like the Cyberdyne Building in Terminator 2? Then we'd just have to break Sarah out of Pescadero, head there, and blow the place up.....
The Shaw role will...

...be played by Sean Bean, of course, because he's British, and vaguely menacing, and cheap. Unless they go all out and Americanize the part and give it to Wes Bentley. Oh, and Justin Timberlake will get the Martin Balsam role. Maybe Jason Schwartzman. Oh, I know, Matthew Broderick. And the appeal of the Matthau character was that he was kind of a mook, and that's not right for Washington. Love the movie. Love Shaw and Matthau. Damn screen name I use here comes from a Shaw character. This will blow at approximately the same level as the remake of Assault on Precinct 13. But at least it won't have Ethan Hawke in it. Or will it?

Terry Lofton is in talks to do a remake of the hit movie "Rock N' Roll Nightmare" starring Michael Pare and the rest of the Cruisers. John Mikl Thor will not return as the star or head writer, but he is slated to do the score and appear in a cameo role as The Grounds Keeper With The Key. The project was (as you may know) originally offered to Uwe Boll. Mr. Boll had to respectfully decline however due to his commitment to the 2008 remake of Cobra starring Clint Howard as the man himself Marion Cobratti. As you can see 2008 bodes well for theater goers, so remember to keep your feet off the seat and eat more popcorn!

One of the better movies about New York you're gonna ever see, and possibly a real eye-opener to younger audiences unfamiliar with Walter Matthau in full take-no-bullshit mode. He's great in this, as are Robert Shaw, Jerry Stiller, and the rest of the cast. Tony Scott is the WRONG director for this material. And I say this as an admirer of DOMINO. Denzel is acceptable, if not my first choice. Tony Scott, fuck no. I'd love to see Spike Lee take on this material.

Besides, your version doesn't quite have that C.S.I. feel to it that I believe all movies past, present and future should have. Get back to me when you can I gotta make a call to John Carpenter. They already remade this for TV a few years back. Of course, they also remade "Vanishing Point" for TV and cluster fucked it. How else could you remake this plot, though? It's kinda specific, and most law enforcement agencies would have contingencies for it. Unless it's a terrorist thing. Anyway, they'll never top the original, especially Bob Shaw's way out. Classic.

I can't see a modern version of Pelham happening. The original plot of the hijack/hostage taking - it happens almost every day. It's not "big" any more. If the plot - and stop me if I'm going a little Die Hard 4 here - had the hijackers using Pelham as a means to control the ENTIRE NY subway system... Cliched but its a remake.

PELHAM is a perfect little movie. But since the remake is going to happen anyway, let's just pray it's better than that Woody Harrelson stink-fest MONEY TRAIN. I'd buy Denzel as the hijacker, but he's too showy for an ordinary working stiff hero. Plus Denzel can do a passable British accent (the ancient among us might remember him playing a Brit soldier in FOR QUEEN AND COUNTRY). Mind you, in typing thids, a thought strikes me. Gene Hackman (if he feels like coming out of retirement) in the Robert Shaw role. Hackman and Washington both shone in CRIMSON TIDE with Scott's direction in a similarly claustrophobic environment. Pack the supporting cast with decent character actors and away we go. They better keep the original David Shire score though...

The original TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE itself was based on the wonderful bestselling novel by John Godey - a fabulous read, by the way. The casting of Denzel Washington is an indication that they are basing this new version more on the book than the film, as Mathau's character was actually a black man originally. Also, the character wasn't "a kind of goofy guy" in the novel. So, perhaps this isn't exactly a remake but a different approach to the original source material. I have to agree with a few talkbackers here, I feel like I am getting a bit tired of all the outrage about "remakes". Theatrical plays get remounted and re-invisioned all the time. Great literature gets translated more than once into the same language. Sure, some films should definitely be left alone, like CASABLANCA. But I don't think the film of THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE was so sacred that it can't be remade, a bit more faithfully too.

The original was fucking awesome. Then they remade the thing as a made-for-TV movie that sucked balls. Why bother? The fucking movie is just 30 years old and was fucking awesome then! And who could replace Robert Shaw? Not even Crowe. Maybe Clive Owen, but that's a stretch. And Denzel, as good as he is, taking the Matthau role? Matthau was great as well! Fuck these horse cocksuckers in Hollywood. I have the utmost respect for Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, but remake after remake got old and tells me no one is bothering with fresh ideas.
