just as I was getting ready to look at another article, and when I clicked it, I was told I wasn't authorized to look at it. Refreshed, and it was off the main page. read another article and it popped up again. I liked Eric Bana... but I really hope this one doesn't suck as bad as the last one. Is that pathetic or what? Our expectations have gone from "It's going to be the greatest experience a human can survive", to "MAN I hope this doesn't make me slit my wrists"

I was there yesterday in the day, before filming. The Jon Stewart sign isn't an in-joke. It's just one of the billboards that is really there. Notice it's for the Comedy Network (A Canadian specialty TV channel) rather than Comedy Central. Next to it is a billboard for CTV (a Canadian non-specialty TV channel). Besides the Apollo sign they also made a Harlem community centre. Other than that all the other businesses are just the regular yonge street businesses. I'll be curious to see what it looks like in the movie. As for black people in Canada: Look up the "Underground Railroad". Canada was where slaves ran to when they escaped from you people.

I Wouldn't Like It When It's Ang Lee
by kevinwillis.net
Sep 18th, 2007
10:30:26 AM
And I haven't liked Ang Lee since Crouching Tiger. The Ice Storm was tedious and precious and predictable, the Hulk was "Meh." Brokeback Mountain was Brokeback Awful, especially Heath Ledger but also the fact that it was a movie where nothing goes on, really. It could have been 2 hours of Ang Lee facing the camera saying, "They're cowboys. But they're gay! Get it?" and it would have been more interesting.

Or it could have been a loop of the scene where Anne Hathaway whips off her shirt, I perked up for that.

Hulk was hardly the best Marvel adaption ever, and they were smart to go in another direction.

Why People Like Ang Lee's Hulk
by kevinwillis.net
Sep 18th, 2007
12:02:44 PM
Because there are always going to people who like stuff that is ambiguous, bloated, self-referential, precious, self-congratulatory, and complicated. And Ang Lee's hulk was not without it's neat stuff. There were scenes I really liked, it was just the movie as a whole never gelled (nor did Jennifer Connely, who is gorgeous, as the love interest). Bana was great but the worst part had to be at the end, where Banner was about to Hulk-out on some Central American thugs--finally, the good movie was about to start, and then the credits rolled. 2 hours waiting for a good movie to start, and I see five minutes of it at the end and then the credits! Fuck you, Ang Lee! You made me angry! I SMASH! SMASH!

They also liked it because it wasn't parodic in the way the Fantastic Four films are, which I also understand. But then, Fantastic Four harkens back to the days of the original FF comic--light hearted, insubstantial, paper-thin plots, and lots of "look how far that guy can stretch! that guy is on fire!" type of gee-whiz "plotting". Ang Lee's Hulk was deeper and more complicated than that, but the deepness led nowhere and the complication had no payoff. Hey, if he had pulled it off, it could have been brilliant. But the only film in his oeuvre that suggests he could have pulled it off was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Perhaps if Chow Yun Fat had been Banner . . . hmmm. Ice Storm? Meh. Brokeback Mountain (admittedly, after Hulk). Double-meh with a terrible accent, and a terrible performance, by Heath Ledger on top.
I liked Ang Lee's Hulk
by papabendi
Sep 18th, 2007
12:23:45 PM
I don't think the new superhero movie craze was in it's full swing when he decided to make the Hulk. Or anywhere near. I also think he saw it as something else, a tragic monster story like Frankenstein or The Wolfman. I think the failings happen when he tries to pull it back into comic book territory; The confusing transformation of his father into whatever the fuck he was supposed to be. It was like he was compelled to bring in a super foe after the hulk had dealt with the army. I still think it's an interesting attempt at taking a character out of that genre somehwere else that almost works.

was very interesting and was more like an arthouse project than a major summer blockbuster. Whether you liked it or not anybody thinking that a Hulk movie from Louis Letterier is going to be better than a Hulk movie from Ang Lee is clearly deranged.
Ledger Was Ace

12:35:59 PM
In the sum of all things, I also have to admit I'm not an Ang Lee 'fan' as it were. I enjoy seeing a director tackle so many different subjects, but they all don't hit the notes to become Great. That said, I was surprised to see Ledger singled out. His performance entirely changed my concept of him from being the guy in Knight's Tale/The Patriot to a true actor.
People didn't like Ang Lee's Hulk
by funwithwords
Sep 18th, 2007
12:36:30 PM
because it didn't have enough Hulk. It didn't have enough destruction. People who didn't like the Ang Lee Hulk wanted it to be the Fantastic Four. They wanted it to be twenty minutes of set up followed by ninety minutes of Hulking out. Hulk was great because of it's ambitions. It wasn't perfect by any standard, but as a film, it was the most artful adaptation of and of the Marvel titles. It wasn't all that ambiguous or self-congratulatory. It may have been precious, and it may have been a bit bloated at times, but I think its strengths and ambitions place it on par with any origins picture since Superman (which everyone knows is far from a perfect film).

I really don't see how this movie could be worse than the Lee version. That movie had potential but it really petered out toward the end with the stupid lake stuff. A smaller ending could have suited the movie well. Also why is it they feel they have to give the Hulk something or someone to fight other than the good ol' US military? That is all that is needed for a good Hulk movie IMO.

it was just an analogy to point out how bad Superman Returns was. Hulk has a lot of flaws (not least the ending confontation with Nick Nolte and the giant jello monster thing) but it was an interesting film, and an unusual approach for a comic book film. Whereas Superman Returns was badly written, badly cast, badly directed, badly staged and just generally a cinematic abomination. The actors playing Superman and Lois (I can't even remember their names) were just bland moppets, whereas Reeve and Kidder brought real likeability and spark to their portrayals. Ultimately Returns was a film made by a fanboy paying homage that could not hope to hold a candle to the original.

Returns was definitely missing heart. Clearly the ending of Hulk and the Hulk canines did not work. I do think you have a valid point Engelhast, that a smaller ending would have worked well, especially with how the movie went up until the ending. Then Nolte became the absorbing man or something.

by kevinwillis.net

But he was his own parody in Brokeback, compared to Jack Gyllenhall's much more believable, much less excruciating performance. I've never seen a movie where I though Ed Norton, for example, was excruciating, even if his range seems a little more limited to me than it once did. But, Ledger took a risk with his mumble-method acting, and I respect that.

The problem with making the Hulk into a deep movie is...what do you need the Hulk for? If you want to explore father son abuse dynamics there is no green monster necessary. If you are GOING to add a big green monster, please try to remember WHY you are doing it in the first place. Try to incorporate the elements that made the character popular in the first place and give the audience the popcorn escapism they want. We aren't stupid because we want popcorn escapism. We just are pissed at not getting what we ordered. In the Hulk case I remember the publicity. It all said the same thing. The Hulk sucks but we managed to polish that turd property into a real movie for grown ups. Honestly, if you think your job is to put lipstick on a pig, you probably aren't the right director for the project. All the action scenes seemed obligatory. "OK lets get the 14 year olds some jump around in the desert time so we can get back to the interesting movie we are trying to make. yawn." ......(can someone tell me the codes for paragraph breaks in AICN)............ Second, the climax of Ang Lee's Hulk was unwatchable. I couldn't SEE it. The screen went completely black. Every once in a while I saw a flash of Hulk head. That climax was just completely incompetent.

Sure it was far from perfect, but atleast it had an interesting subplot and a good bit of action. Can't say the same for Superman returns in which the best part of the movie was the plane rescue. And speaking of Supes thumbs up on the Sperman Doomsday DVD (with the exception of voiceovers and Superman overdrawn face.)Had Singer filmed the movie based on the Death of Superman, it would have been the number 1 movie last year. Some argue that the point of this site is to give spoilers to all the upcoming anticipated movies...but I think its possible to give news about upcoming projects without entirely spoiling the experience. I don't want to hear about script reviews or leaked info from people who signed secrecy contracts...and yeah, I could simply not click on articles that read 'spoiler alert', but if such articles were to become the main purpose of this site, I'd probably stop coming here.
Well, this link still has the story - BEWARE - SPOILERS

all the superhero flicks of this decade suck shit
by Prossor

out of anuses. the xmen series with the homo-y undertones, gimp suits aplenty, wolverine is surrounded by a background supporting cast, the spiderman series is an off shoot of some emo WB show, shit actors, raimi needs to get back in his cabin. batman begins aside from its phenomenal cast and origin, the rest was bland and dull. the fantastic four movies are DTV for the theaters. daredevil obviously. then there's singerman returns, superman peeps, or superman lifts whatever you want to call it. the only one that has a chance at being a real classic is the upcoming iron man.

It really is too bad about Ang's Hulk
by Abominable Snowcone
Sep 19th, 2007

if your brain can wipe out the poodle, the dog fight really wasn't so bad. It's just that...well, poodles are gay. And Glenn Talbot was a little over the top. And the end when he transforms back to Bruce at Betty's feet in San Fran, that looked kinda dumb. It shouldn't happen quite that fast.
Anybody notice anything about those photos?

All the people running from the Hulk bus smash are very young and decidedly non-white. I wonder who was playing at the 'Apollo' that night. And I guess this Hulk world is a Logan's Run-esque world where no one lives over 30.

Seriously, though, his Hulk was like a perfect origami version of the Hulk, multifaceted and beautifully crafted. But a scribbly Todd McFarlane drawing or even a blocky old-school Jack Kirby masterpiece would have sufficed, actually, was expected, even.

when Hulk breaks the dogs jawbone with his trap muscle, that's a win in my book. sure it was ridiculous, but who cares, it was great to see a bunch of hulk dogs get the shit kicked out of them. especially the poodle.
