I sent in a review of this film after comic con and it didn't get posted. I can't tell you how many times I've sent in some sort of review or opinion on something animated and then a month or so later see it reviewed by some "first time reviewer".

I just don't get this site or how it's run.

This was my review, sent in on JULY 30th.

Nonsensical at the Comic-con screening of Superman: Doomsday. Now I want to talk about this film. Superman: Doomsday started out as an amazing film. Doomsday, the violence, Superman's character and even the way they moved Clark out of the picture in the first act was perfect. Very well done. However, there were a few glaring omissions that led to the very first question from the audience to be, "what happened to Doomsday's body?" When the panel of creators responded with, "Well we didn't really think about that." It made me wonder if they had really thought this through.

That seemed to show more and more as the film went on and in the second act seemed to slow to a crawl. It dealt with a world without Superman, but it was too jumbled and it seemed to need something that would help us feel like the world had suffered a great loss. The decision to make this a film where the only superhero was Superman was in my opinion a terrible mistake. Having Batman or the Justice League there to help us feel the loss Superman's friends felt would have allowed for a much greater experience.

In the final act things just got stupid. It seemed that the creators here decided that instead of having the four Supermen show up they went with a Clone of Superman story. This part was just as long as the opening act if not longer and it made the whole film very convoluted. I tried to accept it and enjoy it but Lex's army of Supermen plan was just plain stupid... not kryptonite sprinkled real estate stupid, but pretty stupid.

There really was so much more here that could have happened and I think that if they had made this film with more care for the story and maybe instead of a clone of Superman used Hank Henshaw "Cyborg Superman" or even made Metallo take up that role the film would have been better. It seemed to me that the whole of the final act hinged on how the Kent's raised Clark to determine who Superman was as a character and was more of a well thought out plot than a story to be told.

Now there is one thing that was great for this film and that was the characterization. The little things that made us know Lex was a super genius and that really sold the characters were the best parts of this film. If only they had used the voice actors from the animated series. It just didn't sound right having other voices come out of the characters since the art really wasn't that much different than the animated series. I know Bruce Timm tried to make the characters different, but come on. They are still in his style of art so they still look like the original series.

Oh well... maybe someone will get it next time.

Personally, I just don't understand this shit. Was my review lost? Did it not say most of the same thing that this Garrison person has said. Sure I omitted the gay innuendo between Lex and his need for Superman, but I also know that Timm and company intended this film to be a complete departure from the Batman/Superman/JLA/JLU Animated Series'. This is also their intention for the New Frontier film and the Teen Titans film that will follow.

I agree with Garrison here on most of this. If you are a fan of Superman, and a fan of comics then this just sucks as far as films go.

I'd say it's on par with Superman: Returns, but all that really says is that Warners has yet to figure out how to handle Superman. At least when he's in a film.

Whatever.

But if Smallville somehow manages to make a more entertaining superman that actually fights on a small budget and Singer can only make a boring superman for 210 million dollars. something is wrong.

I thought it was a lot of fun. Blood and violence in a superman cartoon... neat. But it was on par with what I expected. Think of what you come to expect, and that's exactly what you get. Except for the strange new lines on supermans face, the movie was alot of fun. Much different than the comic. I miss the Cyborg superman but oh well.

I think Messi is asking, I couldn't tell from the shouting.

I had this really great explanation as to why Singer's Superman sucked the testicles that was very elaborate and to the point. Unfortunately I didn't save it, nor can I find it on this site that is run by monkeys since it appears that talkbacks don't last long after a film is out.

Basically, the major problems with Superman Returns are the massive contradictions to the 70+ year history that has already been established in Superman lore. Superman's home world destroyed by a super nova would have obliterated 45% of the solar system and there would have been no Kryptonite. Kind of important given a Kryptonite driven "plot". No, the explosion of Krypton because of an unstable Uranium core is what irradiated the chunks of his birth world and even allowed Kryptonite to exist in the first place.

Singer also doesn't know how to handle Superman. He's great, I mean GREAT!, at ensemble direction. His X-Men films make his Superman film look like shit as far as story and acting are concerned. Singer's film was little more than a handjob for Richard Donner and the result meant that actors like Brandon Routhe and Kevin Spacey were not allowed to bring their own flare to the characters. Spacey was playing Gene Hackman, playing Lex Luthor. While Routhe was playing Christopher Reeve, playing Superman/Clark. This utter lack of respect for the actors talents translates to the screen and hurt this film.

However, nothing hurt this film more than having Singer continue the contradictions by having Superman leave the earth in peril after explicitly saying he wouldn't in Superman 2, which according to Singer, Returns is a sequel to the first two Donner films. Singer also made the choice to bring in this kid, giving Superman a son and turning him into a dead beat dad. On top of that he also turned Superman into a stalker by having him float outside of Lois' house spying on her and her new boyfriend.

Oh and don't get me started on the whole Superman "branding" issue that his costume has. This film was 100% effects for the sake of effects. The story has massive problems and the simple fact that Superman survives a Kryptonite Shiv jammed into his kidneys, LEAVING FRAGMENTS INSIDE HIM!!, and then gets the strength to hurtle a GIANT KRYPTONITE continent into the sun is just plain ridiculous. The film should have had a how long has he been dead timer on it that started after the shiv was removed. I mean come on! If a sliver sized piece of Kryptonite can weaken Superman to the point of near death then I don't see how he can even function around a continents worth of the stuff.

Singer missed the point of Superman and the next film "Man of Steel" won't be much better. I absolutely hate talking about Superman films since more and more it's clear that Warners and the directors they choose just don't get the character. 70+ YEARS of material and you'd think someone would get it.

I hope that helps.

I think we're gonna have an uphill battle getting good writing back into the DCAU. At least they're still using Timm, but I'm afriad now that his style will become associated with lesser incarnations of the characters rather than the definitive screen version that his style currently represent. I'm gonna see this for myself, but the minute you do Death of Superman and cram it into one movie and don't bring in Superboy (fuck that court case up the ass!!), you pretty much have lost the point as far as I'm concerned.

Really, really just awful. I had the video store advance as well, and was pretty excited to get this home. What an utter disappointment. DC falls flat on its face with their first DTV movie. And really, why? They had a fresh start, they weren't hampered by any particular continuity. They RAPED one of the classic(ok, modern classic) stories to come out of comics in years. The Death of Superman was a national news event when it hit. And the Reign of the Supermen that followed, was a GREAT read. So why couldn't DC stick closer to the original text?? Part of the greatness of Doomsday was the build up. His escape, punching his way a little bit more free every issue, his unveling as he slowly freed himself of his containment suit. And on his way, his complete ass whipping of the version of the Justice League that existed back then. It made his eventual confrontation with Supes all the more entertaining. Some of the choices this "film" makes are so stupid, it's puzzling. I'll give you one as a minor spoiler. Lois Lane is DATING Superman. Not Clark Kent, but Superman. She has no idea at the beginning who the hell Superman really is. Forget that the whole Clark/Superman secret identity thing has been long regarded as kind of , well iffy. I mean great reporting skills, he wears his hair different and puts on glasses, maybe slouches a little. But I digress. My point with that little spoiler is, one of the great parts of the Death of Superman story, was that Lois was grieving for 2. She shared in the grief of the world at the loss of Superman, but she also had lost her husband, Clark Kent, and couldn't tell anyone. Just an example of one of many awful choices this movie makes. I like some Marvel stuff, but I am a DC fan first. I had high hopes for this, but it sucked so very very much. It put me off of any future DC DTV stuff. New Frontier is next which was a damned good story, which makes me worry again. And they have talked about an adaptation of "Dark Knight Returns". Don't do it!! Not if you are going to stray from awesome source material and produce a half baked pile of horseshit like Superman:Doomsday.

Three different movies (especially considering how short this movie is, 80 minutes!). First, The Death of Superman. Part 2 would've been the Reign of the Supermen introducing Steel, Superboy (Superteen? Superdude?), Eradicator and Cyborg. Finally, The Return of Superman, where a weakened Superman must band together with the others to fight Cyborg. Otherwise, they shouldn't have bothered doing it.

How can you expect a decent movie, when all it was originally was a way for DC to get its dignity back in the mid 90's when Marvel and Image where absorbing most of the marketplace. No one cared about DC's "perfect, flawless heroes" when they could get an abundance of flawed heroes from the competition. DC's answer was to make their heroes flawed. They killed the unkillable Superman. They broke the Batman. Had they not taken full page ads out in USA Today and New York Times, it might not have seemed so much of a gimmick. The story was just crap. No emotional impact. Marvel did a better job with the "black issue" of Amazing Spiderman (the 9-11 issue). The scale and emotion filled every page. The only error in that comic was to have Doom, Magneto, and Kingpin watching and crying, since they have done imaginary deeds far worse.

The comic wasn't even that good. The movie is it's own thing as anyone with half a brain could tell you that it would be borderline impossible to recreate the comic into an animated feature. People cried for the Justice League to be in this. Did anyone actually read the story? If the Justice League in THAT story was in the movie people would still be dissapointed because that wasn't the A - List JLA people were expecting. The Evil Superman is hilarious in his Orwellian approach to things. He is big brother and he will kill you if you question his athority. I'm picking it up after work and watching it again. Jaded cunts be damned.

At least I'll have the Superman Animated 2-part episode with Darkseid to watch and remember as the best example of Superman in animated form since the Fleischer version, and the best Superman in any medium but comics since Superman II (Superman Returns sits lonely and unwatched at the bottom of the leatherbound box containing my DVD collection, sadly enough).

Anyway, they should have kept this in the continuity of JLAU. Instead of the dumb Doomsday storyline they used, they should have made a 3 parter with the rest of the league. I hate when the cartoon version dumbs down the comic's original story.

I think there should be a Death of Superman story where Superman stays dead and gone. Just an inspiration to modern heroes, someone to look back on.

Because, let's face it, Superman will never make us happy, no matter how he's handled. Handle him traditionally? then he's "too powerful and too boring." Re-invent him? then "They're screwing with 70 years of history! that's not accurate! don't give him melodrama!" So god help Singer when he tried to do both, (as paradoxical as that is,) and he got shit on by both assholes.

I think Timm has made some really bad decisions here. First of all, since they changed the look of Batman in the animated series, things went downhill. There were still some good episodes left but I thought the series suffered from the introduction of Tim Drake's Robin.

Like was said above, Superman was good but not great. I think overall Batman is just a better, more interesting character that more people identify with. Also being the fact that he's not a superhero with powers and shit. With Superman it's a lot harder to identify with him because he's an alien from another planet. With Batman, he's human and has suffered a tragedy that some people might also have experienced.

I think that if Timm goes back to what made the series good, with original voice cast, the movie would be a lot better. Why he went with an all new cast and character designs was a bad move.

...like only half the angst for Lois when Supes dies, because she doesn't know or give a crap about Clark "Don't step on a landmine" Kent.

And I'll never understand why Supes in either comic or movie didn't just push the guy into the sun. He can't fly, for crying out loud.

Lastly, the animation really was odd. I know they're going for some new "style" but Legion of Super Heroes proves their running out of things to distort. What's next, cubist animation?

I really wanted to like it, but it was a few good lines with me mostly cringing, waiting either for the Superman clone to turn into Bizarro, or for Luthor to yell out, "I just can't quit you, space cowboy!"

Yee-hah, indeed.

Yes, that's what I want out of a superhero movie. Some guy "standing for something" for two hours. You can stand for something WHILE punching a supervillain in the face. And any character development that Singer DIDN'T directly steal from Donner (slut-Lois, baby-Supes, etc.) guess what - it blew.

It's okay. Marsters is TERRIBLE as Lex. Heche is God-awful. Baldwin is okay. The story, while different from the original comic book series, is reasonably adapted, I suppose. But the fight scenes are cool, specifically the fight between Superman and Doomsday (the fight between Superman and his clone is just okay). I guess it's cool to see people actually get killed (Doomsday kills a surprising amount of people before Superman shows up), but yeah, it was only okay. Not as good as World's Finest or, hell, SubZero, and certainly nowhere even near the masterpiece Mask of the Phantasm, but an entertaining diversion nonetheless.

First of all, the score is done on what sounds like the cheapest Casio keyboard ever. Secondly, Luthor digs deep enough at the beginning so that "even Superman can't see them", but a remote TV signal makes it out? Third, the animation is horrible; much worse than the animated Marvel DVDs. I'm sure there's a fourth & fifth to come, if I actually finish watching this crap.

However the reviewer is correct in regards to the voice casting and the Justice league 1st season Superman face. I was not disapointed as it was more aimed for adults than "Kids WB".The Toyman scene was brutal as well as Doomsday killing everyone in sight, and so much for Marci too. I got the inside jokes/trivia IE Kevin Smith as the grumpy guy (who was pissed that WB turned down his script.)The giant spider and Superman's black and silver costume. In some ways it was more of a romance film, but much better than Supes VS Brainiac or even Returns for that matter.

Maybe it's time to get away from the Mid West, Disneyised version of Superman. I don't want anything dark. Yet maybe a good revitalisation would be good. I'm not talking origin. Just something fresh.

Peaked with both seasons of Justice League Unlimited. The first season balanced a shitload of characters with a great season long story arc. And they crammed some DC classic mini stories in between the big arc. The truncated season 2 was also spectacular. There has been other great stuff, first few seasons of TAS, Return of the Joker, hell I even saw Mask of the Phantasm theatrically, which was pretty cool. My point of this being the first DTV DC thing, was, while not 100% accurate, meant that this was the first produced under the new DC Animation banner. Produced to specifically answer to the newer Marvel DTV stuff. (Which don't faze me either way, they haven't done a character/storyline I really give a rats ass about. Give me some Infinity Gauntlet or Rise of the Midnight Sons and I am there.) Back on point, this was the launching of the "new" DC Animation machine. Producing stories NOT spinning directly out of an existing animation universe, like the Batwoman and ROTJ projects. And they dropped the ball fucking awful. They fucked up one of the best storylines to come out of superhero comics ever. If you read it, there is no way you can be anything but dissapointed in this abortion of a translation. Whats in the future, they get around to Vertigo and fuck up Sandman or, god forbid, Preacher??? Oh, and sadly I must say that while I agree with all the Returns points, and I did walk out of that feeling pissed, it has gradually grown on me. And it was Routh that did it. No one can be Chris Reeve, but Routh was great in both roles, it was the shit around him that failed. And whoever said Smallville sucks can go fuck themselves, Tell em Shermdawg!

Superman Returns. NOT a good movie. In any respect. And certainly not a good SUPERMAN movie. Many things said previously are all valid and alone should be enough to evict Singer from making the sequel. But more than that, what truly pisses me off is that there IS a sequel. The dumbasses at WB need to wake up and realize they need a Supes Reboot, not a continuation to the abortion of the last movie. There should be no child. Lois should actually look and act like a pulitzer prize winning reporter, not a freakin' cheerleader. And give Lex a real NEW motivation, not the fucking real estate bs over and over again. Superman is not a dead beat dad. He's not a stalker. And he wouldn't fucking abandon the earth to go looking for his roots. And he certainly wouldn't have knocked up an 18 year old Lois, giving her a 5 year old kid by the time she's 23. (And anybody thinking she's older than that is fooling themselves.) As it was said earlier, they have 70+ years of history to draw from, but they HAVE to make up their own shit to be new and innovative. But I don't WANT new and innovative. I want my Superman to BE Superman.

According to some of you Superman Returns was boring but Batman Begins was dandy? Are you kidding? Talk about not getting a character, do any of you really think Batman wouldn't have saved Ra's at the end? Or how about the long, slow pauses between words out of Bale's mouth. Oh and Nolan (who managed to make both Al Pacino/Robin Williams and Hugh Jackman/Michael Caine/Scarlett Johannson boring) hires Katie Holmes and apparently his only direction was to talk out of only half of her mouth. At least Superman Returns was thoughtful and had a philosophy behind it. I can't wait for the next one!

Superman Returns was not the place to find it. "Straight" didn't wander into the Lexicon too much, if you get my drift. And yes, that was a pun. What did they get RIGHT in that movie? Our iconic red, blue and yellow clad hero who doesn't drink, doesn't smoke and tells the truth becomes a brown, orange and blue Speedo-clad gaygasm who speeds his free time as a Peeping Tom, stalks his former girlfriend, and becomes a deadbeat dad. NOTE TO WARNER BROS.: Superman has 70 years worth of bad guys to fight (key word here = fight) -- enough with the bald dude already. Re-boot this abortion, don't make it worse by committing a sequel to it. And whatever you do, DON'T have General Zod in the next one. It's been done, 'kay??

Oh yeah? You also enjoyed Mask of the Phantasm? Get the fuck out of here. How does somebody merely "enjoy" THE GREATEST BATMAN MOVIE EVER MADE? As far as the Superman/Doomsday thing goes, I've got zero interest, just like the Marvel direct to video movies. I already saw a pretty good version of Superman vs. Doomsday in Justice League Unlimited and if this isn't going to be better I don't have time to waste on it. If Time Warner wants to spend money on making comic book movies, let's see a REAL Teen Titans movie, not the garbage series on Cartoon Network. Superman movies will always suck until they man up and give us a real Lex Luthor based on the Clancy Brown version, instead of the retarded Gene Hackman/Kevin Spacey version. Sure, the Donner flicks were great when I was six, but it's been a long damn time since I was six years old. Okay, are you crazy? Batman Begins was awesome. Granted I am biased, Batman being my favorite character and Nolan one of my fave directors. But the shit was well done, across the board. Stellar cast, except for Katie, who incidentally talked out of one side of her mouth because she had a mini stroke shortly after visiting a fortune teller, who had informed her of her future of the next few years. And Batman wouldn't have tried to save Ra's?? Are you kidding me? Do you know the character at all? This is a guy who brings the Joker back to Arkham at least 5 times a year, instead of killing the insane clown. Body count be damned! Oh and the Prestige was the second best movie of last year, after Departed, so get your head out of yer ass. The ending was phenomenal.

I got the DVD last night and I gotta say I love it. It's not the comic, it's a movie and you have to take work of art as an end in and of itself. Having said that, it stands on it's own, tells the death, shows the world without him and worked in the pretenders to the throne. The new art made Superman look a bit older but his body/costume looked even cooler than the STAS/JL versions. I just wished it was longer, these DC movies should be shooting for 2 hours.

Then there's really no point in watching DC comic movies at all. MOTP was the GREATEST DC movie ever, comic book or live action. Yes that's saying a lot. It is definitive in terms of character development and action yet also maintains respect for the characters and their origins and blends it all nicely into a fantastic companion piece into the origin of Batman and his war on crime. Batman TAS was the absolute pinnacle in TV animation, PERIOD!! Sadly everything DC produced after has just not been up to snuff.
Superman Doomsday

I agree with Garrison, the Superman/Doomsday movie, to me, seems wrong. Why? Well, the rendering and drawing of Lois, Superman and Lex, seemed just wrong, I mean, Superman's face, with those lines in the face, what's with that? And Lex, seemed too slim to me. The face, too narrow. As for the voices, well, Superman's voice was comparable to whoever did his voice in the Animated series, but Lex, was off, way off. As for Lois's voice, it was ok, again, comparable to the animated series. The animation itself wasn't as fluid as I would have expected it. The story, was, well, way too much adapted from the original comic book storyline. Superman/Lois dating? Should be married... Superman/Doomsday fighting? No Justice League. Superman/Doomsday dying, ok... Lex makes a clone.... ??? No Cadmus, etc... Superman's body snatched by his robot. 20 days later, recuperates, but wait.. long hair? that long? in 20 days? :) Anyways, I'm a bit dissapointed. I would have expected something more in tune with the comics. Again, this was, "loosely" adapted from the comics. In a way, I kinda wish they had kept the same animation/drawing style as the Animated Series. I don't understand why, when something works, they have to fuzz with it.

The main difference between Clancy Luthor and Masters Luthor (aside from doing PG13 shit) is that the crazyness was a lot deeper and subtle in Clancy's Luthor, only surfacing on rare occasions (when he was dying of cancer, etc.) Masters Luthor's genius is more in-your-face, but so is his madness. Especially his creepy love-hate relationship to Supes. Maybe cuz I didn't except it in a cartoon, but I was saying "What the fuck?" out loud at certain scenes with him and Mercy and the Supes clone. I liked this Lex too, and the Supes Clone also had some cheesy 50's "Step aside citizen" kind of lines that made him sufficiently creepy for my taste.

Got this today and gave it a quick look over. The action looked good, but I'm unconvinced by the facial animation on the male character's faces, very distracting. I'm not too keen on the voice work here for Superman or Luthor. Then again I've never been pleased by an animated version of Superman in the modern era (except Clancy Brown's Luthor). I know people don't like the original comic, but I do enjoy it. It's structure worked well at that time in respect of the Justice League comics and it delivered the Reign of the Supermen, which I think after the great bout and the loss was the real story the writers had to tell. For me that story really gave so much great reading, but then I was always a Dan Jurgens fan on the Superman book. DC is still working from the ideas delivered back then - John Henry Irons/ Hal Jordan/ Parallax/ Superboy. I think both DC and Marvel need to take the gloves off with these features and put the books up there on the screen. Like Ultimates this feels very watered down and in the end doesn't deserve repeat viewings. In this day and age I still believe both Superman and Batman, done properly would excel as live action television shows (i.e. don't change the Batman movie format on TV and make sure Superman is treated like science fiction and not romantic comedy, taking out the emphasis on the Lois Lane love story. It's dominant in all the incarnations of Superman and it just doesn't work when it's so intense). I have to agree with Houbou, the animated series worked well and should never have been updated. It has a real timeless quality to it.

If it's not worth doing for a couple of hours then it's not worth doing at all. I realize they want to be able to fill a CN movie slot but since they basicly own the place I don't see how a schedule shift would be dificult to pull off. This was a really good movie and I think they handled it well. Being a Superman junkie from WAY back, I thought this was the best characterization of Supes ever. the added touch of hanging on until he made sure that everyone was OK and that Doomsday was stopped was spot on the Big Blue. and since everyone is referencing Superman Returns, at least there was a lot of Superman in this Superman movie. I assume the reason Superman lives is because the fight was between Doomsday and Bizarro. Why would you animate Superman's face in such a way?

in this case, they blew it. They should have created a story that linked with JLU/JL and the prior Supes and Bats series before 'em, even with new voice talent. Losing the varous Superman variations for Luther's creation? Also a poor move. Which doesn't make the film bad, just another case of knowing what they could've done. It's a step up from The Braniac DVD (Clancy Brown as Braniac? WTF??) Still have high hopes for the adaptation of New Frontier.

Although it's easy to see why a comic book movie which is better than its printed source, and defies the juvenile expectations of overweight, virginal fanboys, and has artistically accomplished more than what any of these idiot talkbackers will due in a collective lifetime, might find it imperfect. You idiots who have nothing better to do than eat Domino's pizzas, play World of Warcraft, and whack off to chicks kissing on YouTube while downloading picture of Megan Fox or Britney Spears, should realize that stupid comments about SUPERMAN RETURNS only confirm your miserable existence.
SUPERMAN RETURNS

At the end of Superman II, the producers promised "Coming Soon: Superman III." It has taken 26 years for that promise to be fulfilled. To be sure, there were movies in the 1980s called Superman III and Superman IV, but those were bad jokes masquerading as motion pictures, unimaginative stories cashing in on a pay-day. These many years later, Bryan Singer has gotten it right. In fact, Superman Returns is not only a credit to the first two Superman movies; it may be the best of the series. Its combination of romance and fantasy adventure is unparalleled in superhero comic book-to-movie sagas. What differentiates Superman Returns from the average superhero movie is its focus on the love story between Superman (Brandon Routh) and Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). If you think Mary Jane and Peter Parker are star crossed, they've got nothing on this couple. Of course, the Lois/Superman pairing has never been simple. Clark Kent has always been lurking around. Now, there are further complications. With Superman having been away from Earth for the better part of a half-decade, Lois has moved on in a big way. She has a son, Jason (Tristan Leabu), and a boyfriend, Richard (James Marsden), although she resolutely refuses to marry him. Maybe it has something to do with the man of her dreams. Some may not appreciate the amount of screen time devoted to these characters and their romantic interaction but, for me, it provides balance. Suddenly, Superman Returns has more to offer than a megalomaniac seeking world dominion -although it has that as well. When last we saw Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), he was played by Gene Hackman and was off to prison. So, like Superman, he has been out of the spotlight for a while. He's "yesterday's news." Once free, however, he is more determined than ever to make his mark on the face of the globe. He visits Superman's Fortress of Solitude and pilfers all the crystals. With these, he intends to create a new continent and destroy a few of the old ones in the process. Superman, newly returned from a futile outer space search for other survivors from Krypton, will (of course) oppose his old nemesis, but this time Luthor is ready for him. Revenge is a dish served cold, with Kryptonite icing. Superman's return to once again aid mankind may be short-lived. Gone are Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman. It's a credit to their replacements that they're not missed, at least within the context of the film. Brandon Routh channels his predecessor, although his version of Clark is a little less gawky. Kate Bosworth provides an altogether different take on Lois - a sexier, more modern view. She's prettier than Kidder, and there's more chemistry in her scenes with her co-star. Kevin Spacey's Luthor is cut from the same mold as Hackman's, except he's more cruel and less flippant. He has his share of one-liners but, when it comes down to it, he doesn't waste time with drawn-out monologues. That's when he's at his most brutal. There are no miscasts to be found in the supporting cast, either. Parker Posey's Kitty fills the function of Miss Teschmacher - Luthor's female stooge who has a soft spot for the Man of Steel. James Marsden, following director Bryan Singer to Metropolis from Professor X's school, has the tricky role of playing the foil in Lois and Superman's romance without coming across as a jerk. Richard is a nice guy. Eva Marie Saint plays Clark's Earth mother, who gets to find her son and almost lose him again. The only returning cast member from the original Superman is Marlon Brando, with archival footage recreating his limited part as Jor-El, Superman's biological father. For those who go to superhero movies for the action, rest assured there's plenty of that. While the extended climactic sequence is the movie's longest and most involved, I was partial to the rescue of a space shuttle and airplane, which heralds the Man of Steel's return to his adopted planet. It's a great moment, filled with tension, and topped off with top-notch special effects. Visually, Superman Returns offers the kind of upgrade one would expect after a quarter century layoff. This time, you really believe a man can fly. Composer John Ottman puts his ego aside and gives John Williams' original music plenty of play. Singer provides us with a blast from the past with opening credits. Not only is the music 100% Williams, but the lettering nearly replicates that which was used in Superman and Superman II. There are other unobtrusive homages to the first two films, from Lois' spelling faux pas to Luthor's love of maps. Singer may not be a fan of the Superman comic books, but his affection for and knowledge of what Richard Donner brought to the screen is evident. Superman Returns clocks in at a fat 157 minutes, but I hardly noticed the passage of time. The movie had me enthralled from opening to closing. One could easily argue that Singer used his time in the X-Men universe as an opportunity to hone his superhero movie skills. Superman Returns is near the top - if not at the top - of the superhero movie pile. It offers nearly everything: romance, action, humor, and plenty of goose bumps. For Superman, many happy returns.
Serious question: why didn't Routh voice Superman?

I don't get it. Last time I checked, Warners had announced that they fully intend to go ahead with another live action film, SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL -- to give the franchise one more shot -- and that Routhe would be returning as Superman. Frankly, he was pretty much one of the ONLY saving graces in the SUPERMAN RETURNS, at least I thought so.

I know Routh did the voice work for the SR video game, so why didn't Warner's have him do the voice work here as well, if nothing else to give Superman a constant voice? What, is Routh NOT doing the next movie? What, Warner animation WOULDN'T pony up the money to pay him to voice this Doomsday thing? I mean, I haven't seen the guy doing...well, anything...since SR came out, so it's not like his schedule was THAT booked up. And I sure would've preferred him over Baldwin.

So what was the deal? Anyone know?

Sorry, WB is NOT making a sequel to Singerman Repugnant. It's JLA, followed by solo Superman films that WON'T be ruined by a director with a lack of vision. And even if they are? STILL better than Singerman, and that untalented 2X4 by the name of "BJ" Routh.

Gotta say -- it wasn't bad. I enjoyed it. I agree, though, about the lines on Superman's face -- very distracting, and incorrect from an anatomical standpoint. My main problem was that there really was no need for this to be PG-13;the story would have worked perfectly well without it. It was fairly callous on DC's part to throw in gratuitous blood and language, when they know good and well that kids will be watching this -- it was just blatant pandering to the fanboys.

I'm a lifelong Superman fan, and was really really jazzed for Superman Returns. But dude, it was a snoozefest. Everything about that movie was either mis-cast or misconceptualized. Granted, Singer definitely respected the character, but he didn't respect the source material. Donner's movie is NOT the source material -- 70 years of comic lore is. Face it -- he just missed the mark.

It sucked donkey balls. That's my official review of Dr. Strange animated. No mystery, they made him part of a team of kung-fu mystics who fight demons in NYC from their base in friggin Tibet. JMS tried to pull a Strange as Neo oonceit and they try it here as well. Strange ain't Neo. Strange isn't the "One". Strange is cool on his own terms. You screwed up again Marvel animated.
