The guy who plays Sylar in Heroes was easily one of the worst actors on television, taking a role that should have had real menace and giving it all the presence of a high school drama production.

Just because Spock is a Vulcan does not mean you can just shoehorn a crappy actor into the role and expect it to work.

We should all breathe a collective sigh of relief that neither Halle Berry nor Beyonce were cast as Uhuru. I'm still skeptical of JJ's Felicity-In-Space -- but people keep telling me Saldana can act (her voice squeaks like a chipmunk though, she needs to speak in a sultry purr). It all depends on the script, and unfortunately, the character descriptions in the casting sheet give me a bad feeling about this film. Uhuru was always the mature, intelligent, and matronly member of Star Trek -- the wise woman with common sense. Not everyone was a sassy wildchild risktaker with attitude in their youth. I'd also like to announce that I bet my left testicle Kirk will not be in this film -- the time-travel rumour is true, and it's JJ's pathetic attempt to weasel his way out of finding an actor to live up to Shatner's legacy.

He goes for surface flash every time. "Lost" is just pretty people on a beach, wrapped in a non-sensical story with a million loose ends that will never be solved or linked to an over-arching plot. That's all I'm getting from every bit of news about the new Star Trek as well. So Uhuru will be an emaciated sex kitten to draw in the lapsed mainstream crossover audience? Gee, will she also wear a 7 of 9/N'pol-riffic shiny catsuit to attract the drooling teenage audience who could give a fuck about the legacy of Trek? Everything about this remake screams "one-off." There will never be a sequel, let alone a trilogy or continuing series from this dreck.
Casting to old & "OC"
by wowsah156
Sep 18th, 2007
10:01:19 AM
For the story to work the cast need to be young and vulnerable. So far the casting comes across has Hollyweird stuntcock casting (EG: teen models who work has waiters). The cast need to be able to convince. With the exception of Quinto i dont have raised hopes for this movie. Whoever plays Kirk will have to be portrayed has someone who is scared but is not allowed to show it due to the circumstances he places himself and the crew in. So no Hollyweird stuntcock casting.

Sep 18th, 2007
10:47:34 AM
I second that. I think he can do it. He's probably one of the best young actors on tv right now, and with the right script, he would kill.

and I don't know what show you're watching Gruntybear, but I think Lost is one of the most non-shallow shows out there, at least on the major networks. There's some great character writing and complex plotting, and philosophical themes going on - way more ambitious than any show on the air that I can think of. So I'm gonna give Abrams some faith here (even though Lost is more Lindelof's thing than Abrams'). The only thing that has me worried is that awful Superman script...

I have a funny anecdote to tell. I was talking with a friend about all the different versions of Othello I've seen. Three or four different stage versions, and a couple of movies. I jokingly adlibed that I've also seen the version with Olivier playing a black face Othello. We both thought that was pretty humorous. Wrong, and a little bit racist, but humorous. Until I went home and checked IMDB and found out that Olivier actually DID a blackface Othello movie. My horrible joke turned into an even more horrible reality.

The only prominent ones I can think of are Worf and his brother (Michael Dorn and Tony Todd). Most of the other main ones, including Martok, Garek, and those two evil sisters were white guys and gals. And remember, Uhura was African, not African-American. So it makes sense to cast a more 'exotic' looking black woman for the role (no offense to Gabrielle Union, who is a good actor, but wrong for this role). Too bad they didn't realize the same thing for Storm.

The really funny part is that the role of Othello in the play isn't specifically described as being black. He could have simply been a Arab North African, rather than a Sub-Saharan African with black skin. This is odd because in the case of Titus Andronicus, the play clearly refers to Aaron's skin (and his son's) as being black, yet there are no such direct references in Othello.

Complicating things further, it seems that the Black Othello is a modern invention, only being de rigeur for the last eighty years or so, and even after that, there are still actors, such as Patrick Stewart, who have still continued to play the role while not doing something as cliche as painting themselves black (Stewart did, however, change the setting of the play such that he was a European man in an African setting).

Finally, one must also keep in mind that Olivier made his blackface Othello in 1965, a time when blackface performance was only starting to be considered outré.

I guess Zoe has done some solid work in movies, yet I always cringe thinking about her utterly wooden role in "Chronicles of Riddick." Granted, that was a terribly written, terribly put together film, but Soldana worsened it by degrees.

I almost can't watch her in other films (except maybe "Crash") due to the bad memories. Hopefully she'll ease my pain with her work in Trek.

Meagan Goode would have been a great choice, and she's actress to boot, but damn if that girl isn't saddled with the shytiest roles. It pains me to see that mess of an so called actress Beyonce get roles when their are more capable actresses out there. Don't know about Goode but Saldona can sing as well so the need for overrated beyonce to take a part that also requires singing isn't needed. I use to like her but after that whole "Hudson winning the Oscar" deal and Beyonce having a fit and mad that she was both snubbed and out done by Hudson just speaks a lot about her character. While i'm on a role i'm gonna throw Halle Berry's butt in there too. Now her I like but Halle is only good in certain parts. Sadly she isn't the most capable actress at times. Saldona, Union, Goode, and Washington are all much better actresses then Berry to just mention a few.

Yes, ladiez and germs, the illustrious K-Fed has signed on to Star Trek as the revered Captain Kirk. To the consternation of some Trek fans, K-Fed said in a statement that he will offer his own take on the role. Our sources have been working overtime to bring you the latest hot info. For those Trek fans willing to spoil themselves, keep reading.

*** SPOILERS FOLLOW ***

The latest rumors from the set have the Enterprise being attacked by Klingons early in the second act. Captain Kirk, refusing to admit defeat, feigns discussion of surrender with the Klingons. Fans will recognize shades of StarTrek II in this sequence. Then, to the surprise of the Klingons, Kirk breaks into shitty rap mid-sentence, when Uhura throws down her ear piece and proceeds to shake that ass. The rest of the human crew covers their ears. At which point Spock, ever the calm Vulcan, uses the his trademark shoulder pinch to render the Captain unconcious. Spock raises his eyebrow at Uhura, who picks up her ear piece and sits down, then apologizes to the Klingons for the cruel punishment.

...basically all inhabitants of northern Africa. Everyone from the North African Arabs with generally lighter skin to the dark skinned Sub-Saharan Africans. This is the definition of Moor used by Shakespeare. Coincidentally, the citation for this comes from someone whose name you might recognize. His name is Strabo. http://202.91.162.19/1/0/0/8/1 0085/10085-h/10085-h.htm

howsabout nimoy and shatner change roles. That would be interesting. As for the gal, not too bad a resume to bring to the fold. I just wish it would be something different cause I think this whole trek reinvention is gonna land into superman returns territory (not a compliment.) If I had my way the torch would be passed to the DS9 crew for movies two movies ago and first contact would have them in there and roddenberry would have lived and played the prof (truth stranger than fiction if gene r. hadn't died.)

K-Fed...that's funny, man. I can see him now kickin' back in the con, wearin' his Judy Garland-lookin' fedora tilted down over one eye. WORD!

And while we're at it bring in V-Ice to play Spock. I know they already got some guy I never seen before for the role, but ya gotta admit the ears would go great with those lighting bolts shaved into the side of his head.
