Like the reviewer said, a good number of hippies just spouted some new age bullshit. Sure, there were some who had strong political ideas and were actually interested in stopping Vietnam for reasons other than, "I don't want to go there," but from what I can tell they were the minority. Most people just wanted to do drugs.

Is anyone surprised that it's a piece of shit? The only surprising thing about this is that Julie Taymor would ever even consider doing something so stupid and ill-conceived to begin with. Either she needed money or had a serious drug problem when this was put in front of her.

They were the Beatles and nobody else has come close. I try not to be a music snob, but there is never a reason to remake, cover, etc. The Beatles. If someone was to aske me, "Show me something perfect." I would point to The Beatles. Even their misfires (The Magicval Mystery Tour movie, Revolution # 9) are a hell of a lot better than what most artists can summon on their best days.

who took that week's Super 8 assignment a bit too literally. "Take a song, and make a two-minute film" turned into the most hilarious visual accompaniment to "Cat's in the Cradle" you can possibly imagine. Yes, there was a cat in a cradle......and a silver spoon…..and a photo of the Man in the Moon. To quote a TV sitcom, "we laughed until we peed, then we laughed at that." Poor guy didn't last the semester. And, yes, I'm old enough to remember the Beatles AND have seen "Sgt Pepper's..." in the theater. (Hell, I also saw "Xanadu" and "Can't Stop the Music," so I have many demons to erase,)

Don't be an idiot. That being said, I also agree that he's bee a little generous lately but I would be too. The guy LOVES movies. That's more than you can say for most people's feelings about the mediums they professionally criticize. He's been through a lot and he's just happy to be able to see movies again and tell people how great they are. He's even doubling back and reviewing movies that came out while he was sick. I don't think he has to do that, he wants to.

433 - Studio/Taymour cut
by LuxLisbon27
Sep 14th, 2007
09:04:06 AM
I saw Across The Universe this week at TIFF and Julie Taymour did a Q & A after the film and was asked about the studio issues. She said that the film is 100% her cut. I actually think that the studio was trying to help make her film more palatable because as Capone mentions, it is definitely a mess. I did kind of like it though, as did the rest of the crowd who were actually clapping rather enthusiastically after many of the musical numbers.

GREAT REVIEW!
by Mel Gibsteinberg

I had absolutely no interest in seeing this movie, from the first time I saw the preview I was cringing, but I love this review because Capone nailed my sentiments exactly, DIRTY HIPPIES! If you aren't standing for something, then what the hell are you doing in the streets. I was reminded of the end of that worthless piece of crap Pleasantville, where some Lilith Faire self important chick folk singer re-did Across the Universe. I remember thinking at the time, you know I never really liked this Beatles song all that much, but I HATE this version (was it Suzan Vega). It made the entire stupid ending to Pleasantville that much more shitty! So I digress, when I saw the preview for this movie, called Across the Universe, that was the first thing I thought. That whiny, bitchy, long moaning version going "noothinggg's gonnaaaaaaaa...changeeeee...my yy world!"

They make that clear from her very first scene, when she's pining after a fellow cheerleader while singing a wistful "I Want To Hold Your Hand". She was not sad about any guy, for any reason. I can appreciate that you'd already given up on the movie at that point and stopped paying attention, but still.

"Ooooh, he's an artist so I love him." Ugh. Elenore Rigby's rolling over in her grave. Even though nobody came to her funeral except for Father MacKenzie. No one was saved.

The idea of "hippies" without any purpose does aggravate me. I recall that while John Fogerty wrote "Fortunate Son", a definite anti-Vietnam War song, he also disliked all that "peace, love, dope" crap, or whatever similar phrase he used.

Can't stand this narcistic hippie bullshit. I am sick of movies about the 60's. There I said it. Who greenlights this shit? And on a sidenote: For some reason I just have the impulse to punch the guy who plays Jude in the face. Don't know why that's just the feeling I get. It's the same thing with Ryan Reynolds.

when the hippie movement was in (pardon the expression) flower, how could you say they offered no solutions? I mean, what part of "Tune in, Turn On, Drop Out", don't you get? It's not our fault if you didn't listen. As for the legacy of the hippie movement, it's all around you, if you look. Civil rights, women's rights, gay rights, rampant pot smoking, environmentalism, veggie burgers , natural food stores. The whole current American Liberal left is an outgrowth of a few heads who didn't buy into the system. Or do you think all this social change was prompted by the Young Republicans? And if you don't like our music, man you're free to tune in to "Bread", and "The 1910 Fruitgum Company" and other conservative favorties.

So don't bring them up. That's a different selfishness for a different time. Just think of it this way, what did the hippies change? Very little. They didn't stop the war, the largest demonstrations came and went a while before the war ended. Stephen King commented on his generation by saying that they had the opportunity to change the world and they blew it. Even Spielberg called it all "collective narcisism."

Last years season finale of American Idol featured a tribute to Sgt Pepper. Current and previous idol contestants performed and (for the most part) butchered these great Beatles songs. It wasn't because they where bad singers, it was because most idol contestants are strictly R&B singers, and they where trying to force their singing style onto arrangements that weren’t suited for it. Something that doesn't work with songs like "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" unless you re-work the arrangement to suit that vocal style. The result was watching some great Beatles song being butchered by these kids who either should have rehearsed more, or had the arrangements changed to suit their vocal style. One of the better performances came from Carrie Underwood a country singer who still had some difficulty holding back her twang.

Good book reccomendation. Nam by Mark Bayden (I think that was his name) which is collection of first hand accounts of a soldier's experience in Vietnam. There is heartbreaking and chilling stuff in here, in fact I'd make it required reading for anyone who runs for president simply because it shows the toll it takes on not only the country but on the soldiers themselves. It is one of those rare times where I can say I'll never be the same again after reading a book.

First, Memories-of-Murder, Absalom was not professing any distaste for nudity you dolt. He was pointing out Ebert penchants, and he has a point.

And what is wrong with hating hippies. A few wanted to do something for the world, the rest just wanted to glom on to an excuse to do drugs and screw around. They left more trash and urine on the streets of SF during the "summer of love" than any group before or since. They suck, get over it. Yes, Yuppies driving 'one to an SUV' and other 'get rich and forget the world' types also suck, but that does not redeem hippies. It just means people on the other extreme suck just as much.

And Smerdyakov, by what possible example do you give credit to hippies for civil rights and other such causes. These causes were fought over by true activists who's sweat and effort you insult by crediting it to 'hippies'.

There's nothing less mentally challenging than to toss out this "I hate hippies" line that stems from sucking on too much South Park and HALO. "Hippies" doesn't sum of the activists of the 60's that did march, stood for plenty (civil rights; women's rights; social rights; etc) and helped shape an entire cultural catalog that made it possible for ignorants like Capone -- whose biggest stand in life has probably been deciding whether to buy the dvd of THE GOONIES or TOP GUN -- to even have a media world in which to whine about things he knows nothing about. Harlan Ellison wrote a beautiful essay called "The Song The 60's Sang" and you would be advised to read it Capone. I know Drew has a copy. Ellison thrashes your simple spoiled point of view with facts figures and examples. "Hippies" were beat up, even tossed in jail for having their hair at a length that southern rednecks now deem de rigeur. They also were unafraid to integrate with black citizens who were actively punished for being black in say, 1967. They did take a stand. Of course not everybody did, but since Capone likes to smear with a broad brush, allow me too. Who made the films that stood the test of time? Did you think it was the William Buckley youth drones who turned 2001: A SPACE ODYESSY into a cultural phenom? Or packed the theaters for MIDNIGHT COWBOY; EASY RIDER; THE WILD BUNCH; MASH; THE GRADUATE; etc.? Capone, you parrot George Bush with your 16 year old mentality of "The 60's generation said if it feels good, do it" when in reality that's what the right-wing does everyday, ruled by their jingoistic emotions and manifested in our current war -- but since there's no draft to take some of you self-satisfied TRANSFORMERS fans away from your toys, you can be arrogant about an era you know nothing about outside of lame South Park humor from guys who forget that it was the hippies like The Smothers Brothers who fought network censorship -- otherwise today you'd watching PETTICOAT JUNCTION. And what have you done lately to change the world Capone? That said, this film looks awful and nobody should be doing cover versions of Beatles songs. Peace.

This reminds me of the old film versions of "Tommy," "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Quadrophrenia," although at least the last one had sort of a narrative, the Who actually doing the songs and of course the participation of the very young, very cool pre-nose-job Sting. I dunno; the trailers to "Across the Universe" looked absolutely deadly. And is it just me or is Evan Rachel Wood in EVERY goddamn movie coming out before the end of the year? She'd better watch it or she'll turn into the female Jude Law.

You are correct that Hippies do not sum up the activists of the 60's. That is the whole point. The Hippy movement sucked. They were not the part that changed the world. "Tune in, Turn On, Drop Out" is NOT about changing the world. It is about RETREATING from it and whining about how bad it is. The hippies were just the parasitical portion of the true activist movement. And packing the theaters for 2001, MIDNIGHT COWBOY; EASY RIDER; THE WILD BUNCH; MASH; THE GRADUATE; etc. (all great movies by the way) is not exactly helping the cause. And who was it that gave him his campaign song...drumroll...hippie loser John Lennon with "Give Peace A Chance" -- and who sang backup? Tommy Smothers! And was Ken Kesey a do-nothing drop out? No, but he did inspire the Grateful Dead and other "hippie" do-nothings... The word "hippie" doesn't mean anything except to those like Capone and smug libertarian assholes Trey Parker and Matt Stone who think it's the height of a clever cultural insight to rip on hippies and their 60's ilk. Cartoonist Al Capp did the same thing back in the day and it's great to read similiar heavy musings from ROBOTECH geeks.

Don't know if you're referring to anyone in particular, but I'm 50 years old, fuck you very much. And I just wanted to give an example of the flip side of the coin of the examples you'd given. The sexual and social revolution of the late '60s and '70s did help contribute to wide spread drug use, sexual disease and rise in the divorce rate. I'm not saying to turn the clock back to the fifties, but to paraphrase, with great power, and change, comes great responsibility. The positives outweigh the negatives, I was just playing Devils Advocate, alright?

People have always taken drugs. Usually people who have little else to occupy their time. Besides, booze was around long before pot. As for sexual disease, well who the fuck knew in 1969 that AIDS was on it's way? Without AIDS, the whole thing might have worked fine. And the divorce rate seems to be pretty even across the boards, popular with both Republicans and Democrats. Once a marriage is among equals, you have twice as many ways for it to go wrong.

It's one thing to bring up the 60's social revolution, but don't try and pretend that the "Hippie" movement equates with all things sucessfull during the 60's. Just because they philosophically supported the same ideas, means nothing. Who cares in Timothy Leary ran for Governor of CA, so did Gary Coleman, what does that mean? I find it ridiculous that "hippie" lovers try and take credit for all social change in the 60's. You can argue that that generation had tremendous influence, but I don't see that you can characterize all peoples of that generation as "hippies." Hippies smoke pot, don't bathe, grow lots of facial and body hair (including the women) and the extremists live in communes run by sexual addicts who manipulate the women into being their sex slaves. And you want to talk about smug? The most overly smug people on the planet are the ones who drive ancient, decrepit, pollution spewing VW Vans, yet cover the entire back with stickers talking about saving the earth. You want to save the Earth? How about grow up, get a real job, earn something for yourself, and then help, and I mean really help, legitimate environmental causes. There is a lot of amazing work being done by true professionals to change this world and drag it back from the greedy power hungry neo-cons, but they aren't going to do it sitting on their ass, smoking out, and reminiscing abou their glory days. You pull yourself out of the system, and the system rolls over you, but you don't effect any change.

It's not about escapism, but about expanding your mind beyond the constricting possibilities offered by mainstream society. Yeah, we know, people hate the 'dirty hippie' stereotype (my favorite is Neil from 'The Young Ones' by the way). But right on, Christian66 and Smerdyakov. I wouldn't blame the counterculture for the rise in divorce rate, I blame that on the ultimately bankrupt fantasy of the nuclear family that many of the hippies were reacting to. That expansion of consciousness involved in 'tune in' is what allowed for people to imagine a better way, that women and blacks actually mattered and should have a voice. That we don't necessarily have to swallow politicians' bullshit. That we can actually define our own reality and not let others define it for us. That's the legacy of the 60s.

And of course, the hippies weren't the first ones to do this. A lot of what went on in the 60s mirrored events in the late 19th century millenial movement, where alternative subcultures were forming and offering ways out of stultifying Victorian living.

Of course all this has no bearing on whether this movie sucks or not. It's just that 'I hate hippies' isn't really valid film criticism.

In my opinion, one of the films that captures both the joy and failure of the 60s is The Invisible Circus with Cameron Diaz (yes, she's actually good) and Chris Eccleston. That film made me weep.

Um, who do you think are the people who are developing green environments and living off the grid are? Hippies! Many of these 'communes' that you talk about (they're not all cults, you know) were laboratories for this kind of work. Just look at Stephen Gaskin and the Farm. Look at what certain communal living spaces are doing with current technology? Ever used a compost toilet? Solar Power? It's in these places where it's happening. This 'dirty hippie' stereotype, which has some basis in fact like many stereotypes, has been propagated by the right wing and by the media. Unfortunately, films like this tend to also paint with a broad stroke and treat them like romantic figures, rather than the complex, contradictory people that they were (are).

How can the baby boomers on this board cheer loudly for "their" generation's efforts in the sixties, and then try and decry the yuppies of the 80's as someone else's problem. Those were the same people? On hand you tell me your generation changed the world, on the other hand that same generation grew up and voted for Bush...TWICE! So what the hell, where they amazing, or where they just poseurs. No doubt there was some amazing leadership during the 60's that changed the course of American, and world culture. But let's be fair, the 60's do not hold sole ownership of social revolution, let's not pretend the sixties generation also brought about a women's right to vote, abolition of slavery, and the creation of nationalized democracy, becasue I swear that's what some idealists would like to have you believe when the wax poetically about their g-g-g-ge-generation! Secondly, in order for change to mean anything it has to take root and last, otherwise its just a nice idea. Some evil cabal of conspirators and rich industrialists didn't change America into a consumerist culture, Americans bought that idea, and they have been buying it since the beginning. I don't have a problem with everything Hippies stand for, but their actions need to speak louder than their buzz words, and they need to be honest and fair in their claims of turning water into wine and then walking on said wine.

While you were getting high and staring at your old lava lamp and listening to i-tunes of the White album, my friends and I were heading to South Africa to work in AID's relief, we were supporting village banking systems to give lasting economic support in rural India and other impoverished 3rd world nations, we were caring for the real poor, the poor of the world that doesn't stand a chance next to the rest of the industrialized nations. But you are too busy taking home $200 K working for some Pharma company, planning trips for you and your empty nester wife to head to Napa in your echo friendly Prius, debating whether you should try growing back your old pony tail even though you are balder than Telly Savalas, and enjoying your buddies new Micro Brew product which you helped finance with the sale of your stock options. You don't like that generalization, don't think it's fair? Then shut the fuck up and stop trying to pretend that your shit doesn't stink. People are people, the hippies' time has come and gone, and reminiscing about the change you almost brought about won't make a real difference at all.

The scary part is, if you think these movies are going away, you have no idea. In another few years we will see Stone Phillips pen "The TRUE Greatest Generation Ever!" Most likely at gun point by some Baby Boomer psycho. It will explain how everything that changed socially was all due to the incredible work and elevated genius of the Baby Boomers, all that other shit that happened after the 60's was really the fault of evil corporations that are run by Morlocks, cause the Baby Boomers only want peace and happiness, they never did anything really wrong. Oh and the generation afterwards got selfish, spoiled, and became a bunch of mindless consumers, but that wasn't the fault of their parents, again this was really the fault of the soleless ad agencies that lied to their children through Saturday morning cartoons and Happy Meals, these agencies are also run by Morlocks.

the country is not comprised solely of ex-hippies who became 401k sucking boomers. conservatives existed before and after the counter-culture. bush was drinking, branding his frat buddies asses and avoiding vietnam while boomer john kerry was killing cong in a vietnamese river. hippie kerry went on to be a prosecutor and put criminals away while bush killed company after company then had taxpayers buy a stadium. that's just a small example of the cultural diversity that came of age in the 60's. yes, there was narcissism that sprang from the era, but one could point blame also to a capitalistic system that favors self-involvement and self-satisfaction rather than self-sacrifice and community involvement. so all you youngsters texting and celling and lost in a haze of video games and internet porn, the choice is yours. as is the war -- started not by boomers or ex-hippies, but the same dead ol' souls that sent my dad to vietnam and denied civil rights and dumped nuclear waste into oceans. or you can pretend you're taking a stand in the world of warcraft. where capone undoubtedly spends his waking hours so he can not be accused of being a hippie... of course, it was the hippies who made THE LORD OF THE RINGS huge bestsellers in the 60's...turn turn turn...

You don't like the generalizations thrown about on this board eh? I agree, they are inaccurate and grossly overstated, but so are the claims of many of your compatriots, as they try and take credit for bringing about amazing civil rights, but wash their hands of anyone of their generation who turned their backs on those ideals (en masse) and decided to buy into the system afterall. Yet these corporate lovers, continue to this day, to think grandly upon the 60's and talk it up as "their generation, and their success!" I'm sorry but MLK was neither a hippie nor a baby boomer, Rosa Parks was not a hippie (and probably was disgusted by their selfish and self serving lifestyle). Right or wrong, to many of this current generation, the hippies are known as the long haired freaks who gave us that amazing wisdom that said "hey mannn, if it feels good, do it!" Wow, what brilliance, what genius, nothing could ever go wrong in a world where "you do whatever feels good." To which the answer from Hippie is always, "Well it works if everyone loves each other man!" So what happens when someone doesn't love me? What do we do then? What happens when they prey on the weak, turn those magic mind expanding drugs into commercialized horrors and peddle them to kids? What happens when they decide that sex with men and women is boring, but young children, those are much more fun? What do we do with the leftovers of a generation that spent so much time "feelin' good" that they now live on the streets because they can't tell what day it is, their minds are so burned down? I guess we should pay for them all to live in nice hospitals, but don't ask the hippies to pitch in and help, they don't live on the grid, they live in teepees in Ojai, and they don't want to be bothered with homeless mental patients.

Do none of you Gen-Y cunts have the slightest bit of poetry in your conservative, self-hating, woman-hating, life-hating little withered up souls? The hippie ideals were NEVER GOING TO COME TRUE, obviously - humanity is too fucked up for that. But the fact that their DREAMS WERE SO FORWARD-THINKING and beautiful - that's the point! The fact that a whole generation was able to connect to some semblance of positivity and love? That's a major achievement for humankind! So what if they later grew up and realized that they were flawed like every other human. The problem with you sub-mental Gen-y SOUTH PARK loving assholes have is this: You're full of SHIT, especially when you try to slag off the Hippies. Is my point to say that it is all the Baby Boomer's fault for this war? No, obviously Cheney, Powell, and Rumsfeld are older than Boomer's and are also to blame. However my point is that you can't act like your generation had nothing to do with it, or that only your generation ever affected positive change, everyone before and after blew it. While I can see your point that it might not be surprising that a movie inspired by Beatles lyrics would have names and lines from the songs, I think Capone's point was that just doing so is not 'clever'. It is really easy to do it in a way that just comes off lame. You need to be more subtle than just sticking in a scene or a character name and saying 'wow, isn't that clever of me'.

You may or may not have liked Moulin Rouge, but they used a whole lot of popular love songs without naming anyone for them or taking dialogue directly from them (aside from a scene or two the were speaking the song as they transitioned from speaking to singing). I agree that the scene with For the Benefit of Mr. Kite turned into a drug induced trip is cool. But Capone is correct that the literal use of Dear Prudence as dialogue comes across as awkward at best. And most of this film is like the latter example, not the former.

I think if you guys will look again you will see that Capone did NOT say he hated the movie because there were hippies in it. He said he hated hippies in general and that in his opinion they don't make engaging movie viewing. He disliked the actual film for quite valid reasons (which you may or may not agree with).
How about this ethos?
by Mel Gibsteinberg
Sep 14th, 2007
06:09:04 PM
Work hard, help others, be kind but don't rub your face in other people's business, protect those who need protecting, punish those who should be punished, do what is right not because its easy but because its right, protect the environment, but also encourage "appropriate" business growth to stimulate economic success, once you have economic success give to others with your own money, don't give to others with your neighbors money which you took, obey the law, don't like the law? Vote for someone who will change it. They don't get elected? Follow the law anyway, cause the moment you think you are above the law you become Ken Lay or Jeffrey Skilling. Think that's too idealistic, think it's too simplistic, probably. Is it flawed, yes, does it always work like that, no. But hey, it's an ethos right. Oh but wait you disagree with it, and you are always right cause you were a child of the 60's. You're right, my voice doesn't count cause I watched the Smurfs when I was a kid back in 84. When you were my age you were changing the world, but now that I am at that age I can't be trusted to change the world, you won't let me. If I want to believe in God, you say I'm a fool. If I want to believe in a system that seeks to create fair businesses practices, you say I am a conservative asshole. Well guess what, I'm not a Republican, you putz, I am who I am and I have just as much right to believe in what I want to believe in. So leave me the hell alone with your "hippie ways" you don't own the "only way" what happened to the days when you believed with an open heart that there were many ways to happiness and enlightenment. Oh right, you found out that some disagreed with you, so you said, only those ways that I agree with, or know so little about that it seems cool. Go away Baby Boomers, time to pack up for your trip to Sunny Hills Retirement Community, where you sit around listening to Beatles cover bands all you want. Its time for the next generation to step in lead.

One is that this movie is utter crap. Thanks for that.

The other is that Capone is a misanthropic, anti-humanist tosser who thinks things like facism and intolerance need "solutions" BEYOND, you know, STOPPING FASCISM AND INTOLERANCE.

Put simply, what a jerk. Not to mention, a grade-A idiot!

Then he tells us to "bite him" if we don't agree. Sure thing, pal. If you say so.

So tell me, Capone (and, really, what says "realist ideals" like a moniker ripped from a mythologized 1930's crime lord), what's vague about saying "it's about time we decriminalized drugs". How is that a "vague" idea? One minute drugs are illegal, and people are arrested for putting something into their OWN bodies, and the next minute...it isn't. Sounds simple to me. Alas, not to a hateful wanker like you.

The saddest thing about Capone's feeble "opinion" is that he sounds exactly like one of those bitter, pissed-off Conservatives on Fox News. Of course, even they don't stoop to telling their viewers to "bite them" if they disagree. At least not in so many words.

Be honest, Capone. Did you vote for George Bush in the last election? Do you secretly salivate at the thought of gays and minorities being thrust up against the wall? Maybe I'm starting to understand what that machine gun REALLY means after all this time.

You sir, are nothing more than a common cynic who likes taking a piss in the glass of idealism. I think it's high time you had a sip of your own waste. And if you don't like my saying that, I know what you can do:

Did you even bother to find out his reasoning before slagging him off? I hated Anaconda, but I respected his stance on it, because even though it went against the grain he defended it quite well. Oh and his review Of "Across the Universe" was a heck of a lot more entertaining and inspiring that Capone's vitriolic rant. Will the movie be great? I don't know, who does? I might hate it even. How does Capone saying he does not like hippies make him a conservative fascist. He did not say that the things hippies stood against are good, he said he did not like hippies. He also said one should have some ideas other than just "I hate the man".

I agree with Capone and I dislike the hippie movement. I did not vote for Bush, and I am all for the legalization of drugs (I am against the prohibition of just about anything). I am pro-choice. I think the Iraq war has been a HUGE waste of lives and resources. (But before you peg me there, I also think Al Gore is an attention glomming moron). I still don't like hippies and don't credit them with changing anything. I give that credit to activists and aid workers like those described by Mel Gibsteinberg in one of his posts.

There is sure a lot of hate and vitriol being spewed Capone's way by peace loving ex-hippies (or ex-hippy wannabees for all I know) over one comment.

Is the stage musical much better than the movie? I'm assuming it is because I've heard quite a few good things about the show but I simply couldn't stand the movie despite Rosario Dawson (who invited herself in my dreams for a month afterwards). Wasn't this about AIDS or something? These people were "artists" singing about being artists and kicking the establishment right in the face. I've heard that one before and it was tired and phony then too. It all just brough back listening to the pretentious crap that my friends in film class spewed out all the time (when they weren't ejaculating over Tarantino or the Wachowski's). Not that I didn't sound like them to some extent myself, I did to some degree but fortunately didn't have my head jammed that far up my ass so in there was hope for me. Still RENT pissed me off and Across the Universe seems just as shallow and silly as far as I can tell.

Well, I guess I'm that kind of "hippie" am I. I guess I'm not a hippie at all, and neither are half the people Capone is CALLING hippies in this review.

Capone has committed the error of "painting with too broad a brush". I know several people whom Capone would label "hippies," and they are all sensible, down-to-earth people of a liberal political bent.

So why would he call them hippies? Because they have beards and wear hemp necklaces and like jam bands? All those things are true, but the "hippies" I know also like Radiohead, Mos Def, The White Stripes, The Coral, Amy Winehouse, etc.

Now I admit that SOME people who associate themselves with that lifestyle are a bit "off". But where does Capone draw that line? He doesn't. Hippies are like any other "group," there are intelligent, thoughtful ones and there are those with odd, almost supernatural beliefs. But Capone doesn't distinguish! That's what pisses me off. There was no need to bring that angle into this review ANYWAY unless he planned on giving more than one paragraph of qualification to it. He should have focused on the content of the film itself instead of launching into his petty grumblings.

His statement is no different than saying, "I hate blacks because they're the source of gang violence and they don't contribute to society." Certainly there are SOME blacks to whom those criticisms apply, but if you say that about ALL blacks you're branded a racist. Yet, here's Capone stereotyping hippies in the same way. Do you see what I'm getting at here? Capone is stereotypig people based on the way they look (and in this case, smell, another ridiculous statement that shows Capone has probably never known a real "hippie").

I agree that ideas of "hey! let's love everything man! Let's even love George W. Bush cuz he's human too!" are ridiculously naive...that is, if ANYONE held those beliefs! Noone does.

Believe me, if our country was in danger of being occupied by a malevolent foreign force hippies would be fighting right along with the rest of us. They just don't support political wars: which every war since WWII has been. That isn't "vague" and it isn't "naive"...it's admirable is what it is. He can disagree on that all he wants, but stooping to the old "they smell" argument, well, he can kiss my ass for that one.

Does it really matter how I respond to you? I can tell you aren't a "listener". You're a talker, who knows it all anyway. Good for you.

I sympathize with people being terrorized in Islamic countries, I really do. I also sympathize with Palestinians being terrorized by Israeli settlers in Palestine but I don't see the US helping them much. If a settler throws a rock at a palestinian they get a fine. If a palestinian throws a rock at a settler they get locked up in solitary confinement for a few onths. Is that fair? I don't think so. Yet we have nothing to gain by helping them, so we do nothing. Israel shares our religion and we have an economic interest there...don't we, Mr. Humanitarian.

How about the Yugoslavians, the Darfur Sudanese, the Rwandans...why aren't we helping them? Why are we so quick to get involved in the Middle east and not those other countries?

Oh thats right...ITS IN OUR INTEREST TO BE THERE.

You're so high on yourself and how much Conservatives CARE about those poor Muslims. Please. When have Conservatives cared about anything other than keeping taxes low enough to get elected. You're kidding yourself. If we really went to Iraq to "liberate" the people, why wasn't that what Bush told us BEFORE we went over there (instead of all that WMD, revenge for 9/11 crap). Because they don't want you to know the REAL reason we're there, that's why.

It isn't our job to police the world. Every hippie I know would agree with that. Who's REALLY naive?

Were not the only two people in the civil rights movement you turkey. They're just the first two names you came across in Wikipedia. If you'd actually been anywhere in your life besides sitting in front of a screen, you'd know that the 60's were a confluence of all sorts of different counter cultural activities, and the hippies did their part, even if it was just to provide the refreshments and girls. So free love hippies will suddenly turn into drug dealing pedophiles? Yeah, that makes sense. And it was Reagan's administration that was responsible for the widespread deinstitutionalization that caused such a surge in the homeless population in the 80s. And what evidence is there that these are ex-hippies? You're just speculating based on stereotyping. I know of a heckuva lot more homeless Vietnam vets than ex-hippies who are homeless. In fact, I've not known of any hippie homeless.

Palestinians? You mean 500 millions dollars a year in aid is nothing? You mean trying to broker a peace deal for the past 16 years is nothing? Maybe you are confused. It is friggin Hamas that doesn't deserve or get our support. Any one who would order a drive shooting on the CHILDREN of a political opponent, ike they did to Fatah members, does not deserve much of anything. Yeah, they sure a doing great things with Gaza, aren't they? When not trying to kill all the jews, they kill each other in their spare time. Show your balls and go try to organizing a gay pride parade in Tehran and Damascus, and see how it goes. You can compare notes with the people in NYC and see which one ends up better. My point isn't how much conseritves care about muslims, is how liberals like you are so hypocritical to say you are against bigotry and racism, yeah you never have any words for people who want to blow you up because you have a different religious view, or stone you to death because you marry the wrong person. Maybe is just because you are cowards. Last time some one try to make a film about how women are treated in Islam, they were slaughtered on the street like a pig. I acutally didn't like RENT when I saw it on Broadway. Maybe I didn't get it because they didn't have any furniture, just scaffolding. But when I saw the movie I really liked it. It was supposed to be an update of La Boheme, same as Moulin Rouge. I mean in RENT they were squatters. Maybe not living in New York, some people don't get the whole squatters thing. But the reason they weren't exactly dirty hippies, is because there were all these run down buildings in NY that were abandoned for years so people moved into them and made homes of them and they became like artist colonies, since they were too broke to live anywhere else. But then out of the blue people would buy the buildings that they'd be living in, and try to kick them out. So there were always these squatter's rights battles. Yeah anyway that was the point of that. And some of the characters had AIDS.

sorry if i offended you, you're right that it is a flawed comparison. i only used the example to illustrate that just as all black people are not the same, so too are members of other groups not the same. perhaps bisexuals would be a more appropriate comparison (but not homosexuals, however, as i feel they also do not have a choice in who they are).

i think we can at least agree that the only people deserving of intolerance are intolerant people.

A couple of things. First, I spent two years in the Peace Corps in West Africa so blow me> I've been doing volunteer work all my life and never stopped, so spare me the sanctimony. Secondly, Ethics and and "stimylating economic growth" having nothing to do with each other. Capitalism has no reference to ethics at all. It's an indifferent, amoral system. Just ask Jesus. he was the ORIGINAL filthy hippie and he HATED rich people and preached economic communism with no private ownership of property. Your classic Republican strawman about your "neighbor's money" is about th most disingenuous pile of shit justification for ignoring social responsibility that you souless, sociopathic empty suits ever pull out. For one thing, you tax dodging pricks don't mind taking your neighbor's money to pay for roads, illegal wars, prisons, drug sniffing dogs, secret torture prisons, corporate welfare and any number of other things you like. You only have a problem with it when somebody wants to use that money to actually clothe, feed, educate or provide medical care for people. The money used for social services is a pittance compared to what gets spent in Iraq every day. What's "ethical" about spending billions of dollars to torture and murder people but getting all huffy and indignat about the suggestion that maybe a couple of those bucks could be better spent on a decent health care system or infastructure so our bridges don't fall down or finding a way to get off the oil tit which would address both the climate problems and the ME problems? The Government provides the environment and the means for people to be able to make money in America, and that protection ain't free, man. Capone's problem with a musical based on Beatles tune

...is that it is a musical that has Beatles covers? Yeah there are a bunch of Beatles references and most of the plot is mostly a set up for Beatles songs. What movie did you think you were going to go see? If you don't buy the premise, you don't buy the premise. Transformers- I hate Cars AND Robots so this movie was terrible 3:10 to Yuma- I've never understood Cowboys, and Westerns are silly. What a waste of celluloid. Spiderman 1 & 2- I have severe Arachnophobia so that means Sam Raimi is a hack! If you love musicals, the Beatles, and this director, but hate this movie; I feel sorry for you. Your brain has convinced you that you hate something that is exactly the same as something you love.

Just because you come up with clever stage design for The Lion King, does not make you a filmmaker. Her film version of Titus Andronicus was an annoying unwatchable mess and I am sure that this new film follows suit. She comes from the "throw things at a wall and see what sticks" school of filmmaking. She obviously hopes that bombarding the viewer with flashy imagery will distract from the utter vapidity of her ideas.

So why should anyone care about a biased review by a biased reviewer who obviously doesn't see what is redeeming about this film or the concepts involved? I certainly don't like a lot of what hippies stood for, but hell at least they stood against something, which is more that I can say for this apathy ridden, pathetic excuse for a generation! Oh sure, you may get some anger out of these young kids today but they will just as easily turn around and tell you to piss off, that everyone should just be left alone, and that we shouldn't really oppose anything. I'm 36, and a libertarian, and I absolutely believe that THAT EVERY PERSON IS THE ABSOLUTE OWNER OF HIS OR HER OWN LIFE AND SHOULD BE FREE TO DO WHATEVER HE OR SHE WISHES WITH THEIR OWN PERSON OR PROPERTY, AS LONG AS THEY RESPECT THAT SAME FREEDOM IN OTHERS. But that also means the freedom to say, "hey, this is bullshit" if one wants too I've worked in the music world in the past, and I can tell you that many young people or so overwhelmed with apathy and disillusionment that they have no backbone these days to stand up for hardly anything. Which means they are prime pushovers for practically everything by not doing anything! So perhaps, just perhaps we can learn something from our past so as not to repeat some of the mistakes in the future. Maybe the lesson in a film like this is, hate the bullshit, but YOU DAMN WELL BETTER HAVE A REASONABLE PLAN TO FIX IT, or your just lost. A maybe reviewers should focus on just the films and leave their biases behind. "oooh, dirty hippies". Hey, if your going to study the 60's your going to see a lot of shit you don't like! It was an insane time! And there was sure as hell a lot more going on than just hippies, but that was part of it as well. People were going fucking nuts! They wanted to escape! They wanted to fuck or fight. Push this country right now a little farther and lets see what happens. As it is, I ain't too impressed with all the materialism of this generation. HHmmm, maybe the hippies saw at least one small truth after all? I'm still interested in seeing the film at this point. And I'll try to look at it unbiasedly and judge the film for what it is itself and what it says about the 60's and not just freak out running in disgust and fear just because some fucking dirty hippies are in it. ""ooooh, the hippies are coming, the hippies are coming!" I like South Park too but people need to dial back a notch or two on their imitate Eric Cartman meter.

I like musicales. I get them and can appreciate them. But this one felt empty to me for some reason. Picture a bunch of music videos set to the songs of the Beatles tied together with a thin story. The production values were great but I didn't care about any of the characters. Maybe I'm burnt out on the 60s or because I don't have an emotional tie to the time. I liked the look of it but it didn't touch me. However a bunch of other viewers at the Arclight liked it so they got more out of it than I did.

when they labeled this "visionary". As far as I'm concerned, it looks like a Tim Burton acid trip. I never had any interest in burning the cash on this. I have even less now. In my view, if you're going to be visionary, you damn well better be different. And for the love of all that is good in film making, don't make a 2 hour music video. Unless you're out to inflict boredom induced coma's. Movie "critics" in general are pompous, self-aggrandizing pricks that seem to be locked in movie-making of 40-70 years back. Let's face it, Hollywood has changed. They don't make movies like they used to because, for the most part, that doesn't sell anymore. Don't get me wrong, I don't think old flicks are bad. just 15 years older. It was the Boomer generation, not generation X or Y, who voted in Reagan TWICE, and who have since elected fellow Boomers who compromised their principles (ask Clinton about welfare reform sometime). The hippie ethos which stressed extreme individualism led directly to the materialist BS of the 80s, as well as (and this is less remarked upon) the charismatic Christianity that has dominated politics (the whole idea of "Jesus as your personal saviour" was very much a product of the Me Generation). Also, I'm guessing that the movie doesn't address that the Beatles (none of whom were actually Boomers, BTW) were derided by "revolutionaries" for being apolitical. The only explicitly political song the Beatles ever wrote was about how unfair it was that rich people have to pay taxes.

My thoughts on the Beatles are as follows: The Guys themselves were smart and talented, John... probably a genius. They started Rock 'n' Roll. But lets not kid ourselves: if they didn't do it someone else would have within a few years. Also, their music is well-written and well-performed, but it shouldnt be the alpha and omega of your music collection... NO Artist should be. Its not really the Beatles I can't stand, it the Cult of the Beatles. Its great if you like them, and its just as ok for me to not like them as much as you do. Hell, I'll take Prince over Beatles anyday, just me. But serioulsy, do we need to Kiss their Asses every two years or so with things like this movie... and the cirque du soleil thing... and the soundtrack to "I Am Sam"... and the "#1" album... It's not really the Beatles I can't stand, its the fans who think there is something wrong with me if I dont wake up every morning craving Beatles jizz in my mouth

Specifically: The Imperial United States' freedom to invade any third world country at will and steal its resources because it, the US, seems to believe it speaks from some kind of moral high-ground; a vantage point not apparently rooted in any kind of discernable reality anyone has ever actaully experienced, but a powerful myth which has had the country entralled for about 6 years before the bottom dropped out and we lost. Because you do realize, its already over. And we lost. Again. Blame Jeebus. You know, that brand name they keep shouting over the bombasticly simplistic symbol system? That pale, angry, moronic reduction; as if taken from another source entirely. Who Would Jeebus Kill? Apparently anyone the moneyed masters of mindcontrol (and secret sodomy and failure) deem best that fiscal year. Works wonders for justifying Empire. Tha audacity, hypocisy, and for the god-fearin' among you, true blasphemy. Turning your peaceman god into a warrior king? For shame. Amen.
I love the Beatles.

And I really liked the movie. Some of the things Capone mentions, like giving the characters names from Beatles songs, or tipping off which song is coming next via visual clues, are there, but it's not quite the same as shoehorning the songs to fit the story, or vice versa, (like the abomination that is the Bee Gees' Sgt. Pepper). Taymor using the songs to convey the mood of what's being portrayed in the film. And I did like some of the versions of the songs here. Overall, I think it's an exuberant and earnest film, but apparently only Ebert agrees with me. Don't know if that says something about him or about me. Anyway, I was prepared to hate this film (in part because of Capone's review), but quite the opposite happened. Shame that it's being crushed by the critics and will probably disappear pretty soon.
