Milos Forman. Jean Claude Carriere. Saul Zaentz. Natalie Portman. Javier Bardem. Stella Skarskgaard. So why was this movie so terrible? Without a doubt, the years' biggest letdown so far, for me.

& it is nothing to be excited about at all unless you enjoy watching Natalie Portman's terrible acting. In which case Goya's Ghosts could be a commedy, especially the whole Natalie looking for her 'baby' motif and how that all plays out.

I normally think Forman's films are good, especially with how 'alive' his characters are due to sometimes spot on casting or at least interesting choices. Goya's Ghosts isn't about the characters as much as it is about 'the situation', or 'the world' in which these never fully realized characters dwell in.

Scenes are short, the story not well paced and the film jumps around a lot. Though the characters, specifically Portman's (the main one of two characters she portrays in the film), don't seem to visibly age much at all but instead are treated with make up to appear more 'worn & battered.'

The film's title, a reference to the people in Goya's paintings, some of which (copies) actually get some screen time, who are supposed to be what the film's about, are simply whisked through the seemingly thrown together plot which rushes through scenes and years (of story) without actually illuminating the audience with more than a flicker of revelation as to who even Forman imagines they were like.

All in all, a big disappointment, a rush job, poor script and an ending without proper closure. One redeeming attribute to this mess of a story is the ever wonderful Javier Bardem and how wonderful he can play a character who one can despise so easily. A 2nd are the way too brief appearances by the great Randy Quaid whose resemblance to King Carlos IV, as depicted in Goya's paintings, is uncanny.

Bad movie

It did a horrible box office here in Spain. Even Bardem´s performance is bad.

DA-MN Elston, what a great interview. You obviously know your stuff and asked really intelligent, informed, well thought-out questions. One of the most thorough interviews I've ever read on here. Bravo. Now if only you could have done something about Portman's atrocious acting in this.....(for the record, except for Leon, when has she ever been anything but a beautiful piece of cardboard?)

But Prague23 is bang on. Watched this on dvd (UK) a couple of weeks ago and spent the whole time waiting for something to happen. Then the film ended. Avoid it and watch Amadeus instead.
It's sad...

...that such a truly great film maker gets such a paltry talkback from those that consider themselves film geeks. Good interview anyway Quint, cheers.

...credit where credit's due, it was Elston Gunn's interview, not Quint's, but just the fact that I thought it was a quint interview is praise itself I guess, as personally I think Quint is easily the best writer and contributor on this site these days. But yeah, quality work Elston.
Ha, way to go Elston

I love that you managed to trick Milos into renting 40 Year Old Virgin, a film about personal freedom, classic.
