On another note, did anyone watch the SNL special about SNL in the 80's. Where Larry David was a writer and only got one sketch on the year he worked their. See they showed this picture of him and oh man. it was fantastic. He had this bad Jew Fro and was bald in the middle after seeing that picture I know why this guy is so pissed at life, because for an old guy he could look a lot worse but I guess in his midlife, he looks like a well someone you would laugh at, to their face.

Larry is my personal god and I hope this season really delivers. Season 5 was a mixed bag, some episodes were pure genius (Kamikaze pilot, The Ski Lift), some were just dull (The bow tie, The smocking jacket). Season 6 will probably be the last season, so I hope Larry gave his very best. And regarding the separation: I think filming has wrapped on this season long before Larry and Laurie split, so I can't see it being incorporated into the show.

season 5 was cringeworthy in a bad way-I think the makers lost sight of what I thought the show was about at least. Whereas Curb always seemed to me to be about a fairly decent guy who often tried to do the right thing getting screwed over by society and minor social faux paus I think when people kept saying that Larry was an insensitive selfish asshole (which I never thought he was) they actually made him one in season 5 and that lost me completely. Seriously the first four seasons were brilliant but I was always on Larrys side, cos ya know he was usually RIGHT, (except in the "fuck hugh" episode-ya dont say that about a kids dick to his dad) but in season 5 he was constantly way of the mark. Did anyone else get that vibe or during the first four seasons did I misunderstand the show completely?

***Did anyone else get that vibe or during the first four seasons did I misunderstand the show completely?*** I think it's just opinion. I think Larry is a nice person who has no tact, and is a little selfish most of the time. It's like the endless Seinfeld debate "Were they horrible people or not!?" I personally felt like they usually were. They were completely self-centered and did pretty much anything/everything for personal gain. From who they dated, friends they had and even the "charity" acts they participated in felt selfish (Remember George becoming a big brother just so he could get a free trip to Paris because he lied to someone that he was moving there and wanted to send a post-card to "prove it" ?). Curb isn't far off from them, IMHO. But I do agree, Larry is still a good person at heart, and has good intentions, usually.
Seinfeld characters were definatly horrible

there was no doubt about that-I think there even was an episode were George is complaining about something and moans "why is this happening to me? Im a good person!" and Jerry quickly shoots back "no, you're not"......which ironically was the appeal of the show-unlike Friends which had Ross have a similar moan, but the scene was attempting to get sympathy even though by that late stage in Friends all the characters were unbearable knob ends (especially Phoebe-she started off the loveable hippie but by the last episode I was ready to put my foot through the t.v at the sound of her name). But Larry just seems to get shat on no matter what happens-the best episodes like The Dolls Head, that one were he rejects the overaged uncostumed trick or treaters or in the season 4 finale where he tries to help the couple take a photo, always has him have a world of crap at his door for either making a good point or doing nothing. Anyway-cant wait for season 6, particularly if its bette than season 5!

The Movie Network, the Canadian equivalent to HBO will air the new episode tonight, however those without specialty cable will have to wait for Showcase to air it, which will be over a year from now, if ever. I'd be more concerned about if some Canadian equivalent is going to air the new Always Sunny in Philadelphia episodes...

i have Movie Central, not the Movie Network. is this a different province sorta thing? is Central the poor man's version of Network, cause I shell out twenty bucks a month for it. that sucks, Central isn't airing it. and showcase is perhaps the most pitiful excuse for a tv station ever, unless you're into half rate softcore porn or ten year old episodes of Oz. Daniel, you are right about It's Always Sunny. I'd never heard of the show until a few weeks ago when some guys in a talkback were getting hyped about the dvd. I blind bought it, and of course loved it, and can't wait for new stuff. The Showcase "Sunny" page is pretty shitty and it's no where on the schedule.

I got to the end of the ep, and then had to think about what qualified as THE GREATEST SIGHT GAG IN THE HISTORY OF FILMED ENTERTAINMENT [or whatever it was].

It was good, just not THAT good. The ep itself was awesome. I am so with Larry on going for Cha Cha in the newlywed game.

A perfect example of him getting screwed by everyone else. The question was like, who, besides your wife would you wanna sleep with. Larry actually answers honestly and gets in trouble. Everyone else gives their bullshit answers and says they wouldn't ever do it.

All that said, last year and this first episode are not as funny as the show once was, but it's still damn funny. The penis cake wasn't any shocking or hilarious to me. Big deal. But it's not a matter of "getting it". I hate these comedy arguments on these talkbacks. This show's humor is just not for everybody. And, I don't know if our antisemitic friend was kidding, but I find the show funny and I've never even been to the state of California, let alone Hollywood, and since I'm catholic, I don't think I can qualify as a Jew, can I?

One thought this show constantly puts in my head, is what would "Seinfeld" have been like on HBO? I can just imagine a George Costanza tirade that could include the phrase "mother fucker". "We had a goddamn pact!" "Fuck you and your pact!" The Contest episode wouldn't have needed any euphemisms. And we could've even seen Elaine lose that particular contest. Oh, the possibilities...

Can't watch Richard Lewis.

That Larry was a sympathetic character. I loved the show when I first started watching it, but after a while it became apparent that Larry was a MAJOR jerk, and I felt nothing for his problematic life because he causes all of it. Was Costanza a jerk? Sometimes but I at least felt some pity for him every once in a while. Maybe Jason Alexander is just a better actor?

It was easier to pity George because for the most part, he was sort of a loser. Larry David as "himself", however, is a rich guy with a hot wife who pretends to have problems. Sure, he's selfish and generally a jerk, and hates the obligations of society. He always wants to know, "Why do I have to do that? Who's rule is that?" He doesn't want to be bothered by people to do things, which are all the little chores that everyone does, is forced to do, and often SHOULD do. Like the party in this episode. Like sometimes happens to everyone, he doesn't want to go the party. But, instead of just going and dealing with not wanting to be there, like most people do, Larry just lies to get out of it. Why should he have to go if he doesn't want to? The little rules of life were one of George's pet peeves, too. Why does he have always bring something to a party, why does he have to buy people gifts, etc. The character "Larry David" is like George in the real world, if he were successful. Also, on the show, Larry really does no work of any kind, ever.

But, some of Larry's problems, moreso in the earlier seasons, were misunderstandings, people getting mad at him for doing things he didn't know were bad, etc.

And so ends my far too detailed character analysis.

Yeah, BizarroJerry I understand what you mean.....

But for me I think the show would be much funnier if I could sympathize more with Larry instead of thinking, dude I just want to punch him in the face LOL.
