however, Magnolia isn't that great. Still, the opening of that film is one of the best ever. And the musical number wows me for sheer, WTF-ness.

Ok, i get it. Boogie Nights - Scorsese, Magnolia - Altman, This - Malick. Ha, you are clever! O, oh Whats Punch Drunk Love? Sydney? To simplify his films like that is incredibly dismissive to his talent.

Dear lord in Heaven, I still have not forgiven PTA for PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE. Rarely have I ever hated a film as much as I hated that. That said, I rather liked BOOGIE NIGHTS and am interested in rewatching MAGNOLIA, but PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE raped my soul. But I will see THERE WILL BE BLOOD simply and only for the triumphant return of Daniel Day Lewis and his mighty Bill the Butcher 'stache.

...is my favourite PTA film. I generally prefer his smaller efforts, such as PDL and Hard Eight (Sydney, whatever). Boogie Nights is really good too, but I think Magnolia -- while it has moments of real resonance and is beautifully cinematic -- does a little too much flailing around, crying and wringing its hands, for my tastes. I have to say that There Will Be Blood is about as hyped for a PTA movie as I've ever been, and that has more than a little to do with Daniel Day Lewis: Untouchable Thespian Genius (I think the official AICN talkback spelling is actually "thesbian", but I'm just a crazy rule-breaker). If this movie sucks, it will remain eminently watchable because of his presence. But, judging by the ominously ambiguous trailer, it's not going to suck. And I loves me a good period piece -- western or no -- so I'm there for sure.

Seriously, when I heard about this movie last year, I ran to the library to pick up the Upton Sinclair book that its based on "Oil", hoping to get some movie spoilers. Sadly, thats what it takes for me to read a book. not to get culture, but to maybe find some inside info on a movie. The book is a bit of a hard read,(cuz of its old-timeyness) but it holds up VERY well for a work of political/religious satire that was written after the turn of the century. Few months back, I got the script off someone on the IMDB boards. It is a bit of a reimagining of some of the things in it, and it begins and ends at different places than the book did. Without spoiling anything, i can say that 1. DDL's character "Plainview" is present in every single scene of the script. From his days of starting a small oil empire to the time he becomes a big shot oil baron. 2. There is a nice little mining scene about a third of the way in that reads like it COULD be one of PTAs long one-take shots. Im crossing my fingers. 3. The title dosent just refer to blood as in oil. There are a some gory deaths, (a few of them by guns) I guess saying anything more might piss people off but if i guess if you want to know anything else just let me know.
