The character of Faith provides perhaps the strongest possibility of a 'successful' TV spin off. With the 'Fox' thing recently, here's hoping that there is still a chance.

...something more "official" like a TV movie or film project comes along to contradict it. And since Whedon himself is writing and acting as "showrunner" for this series, you might as well accept it. I mean, if you could accept those crappy Seasons 6 & 7 as canon, then this should be an automatic given.

Season 6 was not crappy, the fact that many Buffy fans think it was just shows how terrible their perception of "good" is. 7 was crap though. It was very very rushed when it came out it was the last season. They should have just ended it like the comic with Buffy disappearing and all the evil on earth dying with her. They where obviously going for it with the sheer number of references to Fray, but then it just got warped.
I will never accept it as canon! Ever!!!

Sorry, thought this argument was over. The comic *IS* season 8...you don't have to like it. I just don't understand how you could be interested in 'Faith' and would have been interested in a show, but refuse to read the EXACT SAME ADVENTURE in a comic book. Nothing against the comic per se, I just hate Herc's relentless cheerleading of it, pretending that it's a TV show when it clearly isn't. When I see a headline in the TV column about "Buffy Season Eight," I might reasonably expect it to be about an eighth season of Buffy on, y'know, TV.

11:19:39 AM
Every episode up until Bring on the Night (almost half the season) is so, so good. But then everything just became repititous and treading water. Did we really need "Touched"? No, we didn't. And having Buffy find a Turok-han incredibly hard to kill, and then having Anya and Xander killing them was just foolish. Why was it even a danger if the vampires got out of the Hellmouth, into the school? It was DAY. These vampires were still killed by the sun, weren't they? Also, Buffy probably looked worse in comparison while Angel was putting on season 4, and arguably some of the best stuff (excluding the Cordelia stuff) that they had ever done.

I wouldn't exactly call 'Damages' slumming - just look at the cast - Ted Danson, Glen Close, Tate Donovan and me lovin some Rose Byrne. Also created by a Sopranos writer and used some of the same directors (I believe). Anyways, I find the writing/ directing really sharp, and I'm loving the show just as much as MM.

This is not Catholicism, and Joss Whedon is not the pope (although Joss Whedon IS closer to being my spiritual savior than any religioso I ever met). There is no reason for anyone to subscribe to anybody else's notion of what is 'canon,' even the creator's. And individual's relationship with a work of art is completely personal, and what is and is not 'real' to a given audience member will never be truly up to anybody else.

since she signed a contract with Fox TV - even though Tru Calling was cancelled and her Grey's Anatomy ripoff pilot (Nurses) didn't make the cut, they have a 6 figure development deal with her. And as much as I love Joss's work in the comics, I think overall Vaughan is a better comic writer in terms of overall plot and theme. So I'm definitely looking forward to this arc.

And how come every time there's a talkback for the Buffy season 8, some idiot comes on here and says 'I thought this was a tv show. Bitch...moan...grumble.' Time to crawl out from under the rock. It's a comic. Joss considers it canon. You can accept that if you want or you can stamp your foot and hold your breath. Good luck with that.

Joss should've made an Angel movie instead of Serenity
by Neo Zeed
Sep 6th, 2007
05:03:51 PM
It would've kept the Buffyverse franchise going, and it already had a larger fanbase than Firefly. Angel: had 5 seasons. Firefly: blink and you missed it. Also, Underworld and Blade were franchise hits (except for blade 3 but it probably made money on video), so there was a vampire action franchise to capitalize on. To stretch even more, supernatural thrillers like Constantine and horror flicks were (are) getting greenlit all the time. Instead Whedon chose to make Serenity...a movie that even Whedon admitted would be a tough sell to moviegoers.
Just read it

05:15:28 PM
Grabbed it during my lunch break, and things are slow enough at work that I was able to sit down and read it. I think this is the best issue they're released thus far, and that by a pretty wide margin. Vaughn strikes a better balance of charcter and plot beats than Whedon generally does (in the comics, that is, because I think Whedon is one of the best TV writers ever), though it helps that, so far, he's telling a smaller, more personal story. I've always found the comic format most effective when it's being used for intimate character studies, rather than epic stories.
Angel movie
by KanekoFan
Sep 6th, 2007
05:32:18 PM
Neo Zeed, I see your point about the Buffyverse having a bigger fanbase than Firefly, and you're certainly right that Serenity never had a good shot at being a big success. But every once in awhile (and the attitude I'm about to display, I'll admit, is part of why I have not yet been able to get one of my own modest movies financed in this soul-sucking town), storytellers should take the opportunity to tell those stories that matter to them, even if they are hard sells. The cancellation of Firefly rendered it an esoteric property, but in the same stroke it left an entire 'verse open for further exploration, a story important to its author that almost had to go untold. On the other hand, while many people may feel that Angel was cancelled before its time, the ending that was concocted brought an excellent sense of narrative closure, while, importantly, leaving the fates of the individual characters up in the air, which only served to emphasize that the mission is more important than the members. I would actually be quite disappointed if I were given a cinematic next chapter in Angel's un-life, because I think that story should be permitted the ending that it has.

not that whedon's weren't good, because they were, but vaughan clearly has a better grasp at writing COMICS than whedon does. joss may have his characters down, but his comic style needs work. (i think that applies to his x-men work as well). vaughan really wrote a kick ass book here, and i can't wait to see what's next.

KanekoFan
by Neo Zeed
Sep 6th, 2007
07:06:55 PM
But they are continuing the story in comic form (courtesy of IDW), which indicates that there are more stories to tell. Joss and co even said that season 6 would've taken place after the apocolypse. I understand that Joss wanted to explore Firefly, and he wanted to make it up to his cast for the untimely cancellation. However, I still think it was bad timing. He should've went with his bigger success...then with an actual hit movie under his belt (even just a modest one) he could THEN persue the Firefly movie. Even if Serenity still tanked, we'd at least have the Buffyverse alive and kicking in live action form. In Hollywood, you're only as good as your last hit.
Thanks for clarifying
by KanekoFan
Sep 6th, 2007
07:22:31 PM
Neo Zeed, I thought you were decrying the decision to make Serenity at all. My mistake, and I agree that the timing could have been much better. And while I know they had more stories to tell with the Angel characters, and would have loved to see the series last longer, my point is that, when pressed, they came up with an ending that I consider so perfect that I don't think they'll be able to match it. I hadn't heard anything about season 6 taking place after the apocolypse, and it rather surprises me, since everything I'd heard indicated that they cooked up that ending pretty quickly, and that emotionally it was a reflection of their feelings about the show's cancellation. For some reason, I don't mind the idea of the show being continued in comics form; I'd just rather not see it go on in a motion picture medium. I guess I feel like comics inherently represent such a different approach to storytelling that stories in that format won't be stepping on the toes of the extant material.

by buffywrestling
Sep 7th, 2007
04:57:55 AM
First and for most: I bought the Serenity DVD CE from this site but the blooper reel is the same from the last DVD. But I was sent a early segment by 'puter, when the show had ended, which showed a blooper reel that showed Captain Mal in a tracking shot around a coffin of one of his "campadres" which was one of the most fucking funny scenes I have ever witnessed. I KNOW there are more outtakes: Why not shoW them?

Second, this arguement of Buffy vs Faith - Who is better? - has already been answered. Buffy won.

It's canon...

It's not hard to read between the lines that Joss was getting frustrated with SMG and the SMG was thought she was getting shuffled back because of the Dark!Rosenberg storyline. S6 sucked for Buffy but was great for the supporting cast. Jealousy ensues.

I am also of the mind of Jedi: I'll wait for the "big book" of Season 8. I am too old to be piece mealing shit. And if I die before I wake, at least I don't know what I'm missing...

Personally I think the finale was damn good. Most of the things that happen are pretty damn shocking even for a finale... but yeah, it blows my mind that with all the C R A P on TV today that a cable channel, PAX TV or CW, or SOMETHING wont backroll Whedon. For the sake of Pete, he has BUILT in cult audiences, just tell him keep it cheap, double the DVD prices and PROFIT, and ENJOY THE DAMN STORIES, whats wrong with you people in TV?
Jo Chen vs. Georges Jeanty? No contest!
by DEX
Sep 7th, 2007
08:30:33 AM
Jo Chen is an amazing talent. Georges Jeanty's art is kind of amateurish. Comic companies always make the same mistake with adapting movie or tv projects. Usually, they get mediocre artists just because they have some talent with drawing likenesses. Jeanty isn't even consistent, some drawings will look like the actors (where I suppose he has photo reference) and then they look totally different on the same page sometimes. For comics, they should worry about getting great artists and not so much about the likenesses. Unless, you have someone like Jo Chen, who has it all...

that tracking shot of the funeral with nathan fillion showing up is a blooper from Firefly and thats why it isnt on the Serenity discs. i'm assuming by that one scene you mentioned that you probably watched the Firely reel as well. as for Angel's ending, this was never a last minute thing. thats the exact ending the show was gonna have, they didnt change squat. of course, they were hoping there'd be a season 6 so the ending was originally gonna simply be a cliffhanger for the "apocalypse 6th season". but when they found out they were indeed cancelled, instead of making rushed changes and whatnot, Joss decided to leave it as is and just do the ending they planned.
