Bioshock is not an adaptation of Atlas Shrugged to a video game. It is not the same characters and certainly not the same story. It deals with the same themes however. Do not expect Atlas Shrugged to have giant monsters walking around in crazy underwater suits. Atlas Shrugged and Bioshock are both works of pure genius, but each in their own right.

Bioshock is a deconstruction of Ayn Rand's nonsense. The only sane way to approach this pseudo-philosophy is satire, and I hope we'll get something along the lines of Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers, which shows up the original novel for its infantile war-fetishism. Perhaps Atlas Shrugged the movie will amusingly needle those who believe they are somehow above the society that nurtures them, highlighting the absurdity of those who oppose all taxes, yet drive on public roads? Isn't that how long Galt's whiny bitchfest goes on for in the latter half of the novel? Wallace's politics are fairly obvious, given the scripts he's written thus far (Braveheart, Pearl Harbor, We Were Soldiers, all jingoistic trash). I'm sure he's quite a fan of the novel, so a Verhoeven-esque satire like Starship Troopers is almost certainly not going to happen. If they do an "honest" adaptation of the novel, the flaws and inconsistencies in the logic should be as blatantly obvious in the movie as they are when reading the book. Perhaps if we're lucky we'll get a Bioshock movie a year or two later that will destroy the film. They'll have to make sure they include the audio diary mechanism, otherwise they'll lose the whole point of the damn thing. They have to show how everyone's dogged insistence on following Ryan's/Rand's Objectivist philosophy is what created the disaster in Rapture in the first place.

Not really. It's very, very long, but only because it essentially repeats the same moments over and over and over. You could cut the book in half and not lose any narrative or character or philiosophical development at all. The main problem I see with this film is that, well, if its anything like the book, we are in for a philosophy lecture dressed up as a fucking abysmally crafted melodrama. Wont help me that I'm not entirely sold on Objectivism. Also, considering the book focuses most of its attention of spoilt, fortunate brats, why not just stunt cast Paris Hilton instead.

Ayn Rand's works are 100% counter to Hollyweird's ways of thinking. I highly doubt this script will lack a left-wing spin that paints Objectivism as something to be scorned and ridiculed. I'll bet they focus on Dagny Taggart's insatiable need to bone every captain of industry. Sure, Galt's 50-page speech could be cut down by 90% but IMHO, D'Anconia's speech is better. But there's one factor that Rand got 150% right and you can see it all around you every day. The ability to change the world requires command of energy.

A corporation isn't going to produce a widget with the best widget making materials, the best widget inventors, and the most experienced widget factory workers it can (like Rand thinks will happen if capatalism is unchecked). What really happening is that a corporation is going to fire all of those profesional widget makers, force them to find work at Taco Bell, then find the cheapest workers in the cheapest country and the shoddiest material in order to make his widgets for a nickle less in order to make a greasy buck. Then the corporation will be shcked, SHOCKED to find out that his widgets are now made from hazerdous material and are killing children. Fuck Rand and all of her progeny.

I have read Ayn Rand, and the problem with her philosophy isn't that she's a nazi or anything ridiculous. She actually makes some pretty good points. She was a strong advocate of human rights and strongly AGAINST fascism. The problem is that she valued individualism and personal liberty not just above everything else, but almost to the ~exclusion~ of everything else. It's not a philosophy from which you can hope to build a healthy society. It's hopelessly naive, and the situation she manufactures in Atlas Shrugged to prove Objectivism as important and valid is simply not plausible and, in the end, proves nothing.

No matter how you want to spin the politics (which to me comes off as just common sense capitalism), Atlas Shrugged is but one of MANY important works that are WAY long overdue to be made into films (Stranger, Anthem, and Watchmen are also WAY overdue). Once force is used, there is no thinking or reasoning. Force should never be used in initiation. Only in self-defense and only against those who initiated force in the first place. While I could not myself endure a true dictatorial regime here in the U.S., I agree that most of these fucking parrots have no idea what they're talking about when they scream about America being a dictatorship. If they could then they understand that both ideals are diametrically opposed to each other. We are indeed closer to a Fascist or better yet "Statist" economy than we are to a free market based capitalist economy. Here's what Fascism means (they can thank me later, although this probably won't fit their molded preconception): Fascism is a state controlled economy in which corporations and such are still allowed to exist, but they're so close to the government that you can barely tell them apart. That is what we have now. In a free market capitalist economy, you have a separation of state and private industry, and the government is left to do it's only fucking job which is: Protect individuals from harm & fraud be it domestic or foreign. What part of that sounds compatible with fascim or any other statist philosophy? NONE! Government will still be there to do what it was designed to do. No more lobbying or accepting dubious campaign contributions, no more invading countries for oil companies and contractors. NONE of that. But since these morons lack analysis, they can only go on the soundbites they fucking inhaled and memorized to the letter. If they forgot one comma, their whole concept would unravel.

I wasn't addressing Rands opinions on justifying war. Just her mind set. Also, objectivists believe that to properly ensure freedom, it's necessary to control who applies force and adjudicates. Which is what seperates them from anarchists or libertarians. So couldn't an invasion of Iraq, who threatend U.S. financial interests, and who had previously initiated force against them, be justified? If Saddam and Co. couldn't be persuaded through financial or moral arguements? My problem with Objectivism, is that it wants to have its cake and eat it too. It's also a strangely unworkable philiosophy in the sense that if ALL people were to apply it, the machinery would cease to work. Someone has to sweep the floor, or shovel the shit. Yet it holds these very people in contempt. That was one of the main problems I saw with Atlas Shrugged, in that she created such unsympathetic characters. Dagny, the central character, really doesn't do more than live out a free loading, easy going life provided to her from her parents. We see characters, from train drivers to cooks, who are capable and hard working, yet seem to exsist in servitude to the ego of Dagny and a few others. When, if they were to apply her philosophy, should be working towards building their own rail way line.

He was in back of me in the county clerk's line many years ago when I dropping off some court documents. The guy was figity dropping his paperwork and was a nervous wreck. I told him to go ahead of me if he was in a hurry. He thanked me and gave me his card after he completed whatever he filed. I called him later and he wanted me to take a $400.00 seminar on dealing with people. This guy couldn't even get his own act together why should I take a class with him? He also wrote a book on the subject so why should I take a seminar for $400.00 when I could go to the library and check it out for free! I asked him about Ayn Rand's philosophy and he said he didn't teach them anymore. Later, I found out he actually denounced her publicly. This coming from a guy who couldn't get his own act together ripping off the public on phony seminars! He made the Learning Annex look like UCLA's Anderson School! The people that think Ayn Rand is fascist miss the total point of her work. A sceen that comes to mind in "Atlas Shruged" applies to the unwashed masses that don't understand her work or have never read it. Hank Reardon and Dagny Taggert are walking around this run-down, deserted factory where Reardon finds the incredible fusion engine now being used as a flower pot. This is a find that would revolutionize the railroad industry. Reardon decides to leave it buried and covered as the world doesn't deserve it, let alone, appreciate it. Says it all. What if the intelligent men went on strike all over the world? We're living it now.

It's the weirdest thing I think I've ever seen. The same people who champion reason and civility are foundlessly wishing death on a philosopher. Say what you will about her, but I can only laugh at the fervor people spew at her. It's not like her philosophy ever sparked anything but healthy discourse, unlike some of you Marxists out there. Lotta dead Russians could probably explain just how that didn't work out so well.

Jennifer Connelly is a goddess. Ayn Rand on the other hand... I guess her work is interesting when you are 16, raised Republican (like I was) and haven't truly been out on your own (or if you are in your 20s and haven't had the rug pulled out from under you yet career-wise). Anyone who is a little older and wiser can see the inherent problems with her philosophy; namely, that sometimes ambition and hard work aren't quite enough because there isn't a level playing field, and you can end up in a bad situation through no fault of your own and not be able to pull yourself back up. Her ideas are the antithesis of altruism; an ever-compassing "fuck you" to the disadvantaged and the downtrodden that can only come from someone who has never truly experienced adversity and hardship. I know many Republican office drones will chime in about how hard they worked in college and in their jobs and how everyone who isn't successful in life is a lazy piece of shit, etc. This is a false dichotomy, a problem that is endemic in American society. Everything has to reduce to black or white, right or left, in public discourse. There are many people who work hard and would still be labeled as failures because of events outside of their control (medical expenses that insurance won't cover, etc). But too often, the typical suburbanite office drone has a pathological need to look down on anyone who they deem a failure. It is imperative that the suburbanite ascribe all blame for a person's shortcomings and failures to that person alone, and not to external circumstances, because to admit the possibility of agents other than one's own ambition in one's success in life is anathema to the very essence of the American Dream, a myth that suburbanites cling to desperately to validate their existentially bankrupt lifestyles. So, I don't really know why they are making Atlas Shrugged into a movie, since Rand's books are not taken seriously in pretty much any class on moral philosophy taught in the Anglo-American academic world. But you know, why not, maybe Jennifer Connelly will be in it and she is always an enjoyable presence. ^^;

She thought it was her best novel. It's not. WE THE LIVING was her best "novel". However, if something that's maybe 25% philosophy and 75% plot counts as a novel, then THE FOUNTAINHEAD kicks way more ass than ATLAS SHRUGGED. (One of the main reasons is that it was Rand's only book with a great villain: Ellsworth Toohey. I long to see a remake of FOUNTAINHEAD with someone like Philip Seymour Hoffman as Toohey. But alas, now I think Rand sucks and Objectivism = Nazism. Why? Becuase Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World convinced me I was wrong. It isn't so much that I agree with GWGAHAASTW's detailed arguments. I just bow before his superior User Name. All hail GWGAHAASTW.

Atlas Shrugged has a tough premise to accept, and Objectivism is certainly flawed, although Rand's wholesale condemnation of socialism is pretty much unassailable, especially given it predicted much of the oppression, economic hardship, and the torrents of blood that socialism would give humanity before it had actually done most of that stuff. House of Sand and Fog was garbage. Not only was it a horrible, largely plotless movie, it managed to make a naked Jennifer Connely surprisingly unappealing. For anyone who believe their political point of view is the product of their life experiences, and that those poor fools who don't agree with their brilliant politics only disagree because they lack experience: you're a douche bag. It's probably mostly genetic, the rest of it peer pressure. Or completely invisible random macro and micro forces that we are completely unaware of, and we simply reverse-engineer our rationalizations for our political and ideological veiwpoints because we seek to explain what we have no conscious, and perhaps no subsconscious, awareness of. We might well each just be filling our prescribed checkbox in the universe's mathematical structure requirements. And Nicholas Cage as Fu Manchu . . . I assume your dichotomous black and white diatribe against Republicans and office drones and people who don't believe in the philosophy of the nanny state was ironic. Because otherwise, you'd just be trying to have your cake and eat it, too. Which could be considered post-ironic, which would be even hipper than just ironic.
