ANOTHER remake edit oddball version of the TV series??? The only time I tried to watch evangalion was when a friend lent me it on DVD. Cover art and concept look sweet. Though the DVD basically contained the whole TV series edited into an incoherent mess of nonsense - wtf was up with that?Evangelion is weird.

Evangelion is not good anime, it's formulaic rubbish. Power Rangers style 'monster of the week' kinda stuff, just like Battle Of The Planets (Gatchaman) was. Good anime is stuff like (and, to his credit, the dude did name some): Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2nd GiG is the best anime series of all time, imo) and, of course, Akira. A live-action Eva movie would be fun, admittedly, but only if the plot was condensed and all the insane mental shite of End Of Evangelion is taken out (or explained!).

I've watched some remarkable films and thoroughly enjoyed them... then whenever I go to check out what other people's thoughts are simply to find a good discussion there's always the "Pretentious!" "Jumbled Mess!" "Poorly written!" etc. etc. vocal people. And while I do agree that there's some heavy stuff in films, series etc. I always understood it for the most part, and rewatching it reveals more and I'm always confused at why people thought otherwise... For years I always hid in the closet wondering that maybe those vocalites were right. But after pondering it over for years it just doesn't make sense... so I'm come to the conclusion that it's not the film/series/game/comic's fault... but rather that the people who find it 'pretentious' or 'confusing' are simply dumb... They lack the mental capacity to sit through something that's experimental and engages their mind and senses by breaking away from formula... So I'm stepping out of the closet to come out and finally say it... There's nothing wrong with any of this stuff and your cries are just false because you are dumbasses and the truth is that I'm simply smarter than you! S-M-A-R-T!!!!ER!!! And you're not! Clearly Shinji is a "hero" with several severe tragic flaws which altenately make us root for him, be disgusted with him, and feeling sorry for him. He's one of the most emotionally complex characters I've ever seen put to film, animated or otherwise. He's also very much a reflection of some of the more unflattering aspects of the average Japanese male otaku / student / sarariman in training...

But the intro to this review was terrible - for one there is fucking AICN Anime report on this sight - so it isn't like there is a bias toward Japanese animation. I like the medium of animation of which Anime is a subset, but doesn't mean I like everything contained in the medium (I love film but regard Uwe Boll's abortions as abominations of the highest order).

Adam and Lilith are like giant creatures that still exist and we humans descend from Lilith (uh, got that backwards), while Eve is cloned as Rei and was mother to all the alien-like Angels or some such shit, and the spear of Longinus is suddenly some giant spire that's sticking out of Adam and meanwhile the cross is all over the place but it doesn't have anything to do with Jesus (or at least the real Jesus)...it was as if they didn't have a clue what any of that stuff actually was and just threw the names in to add to the whole thing being more of a mind fuck. I've read a lot of it was just included to make it different from other mecha anime--which is about the most shallow reason I can think of for evoking such loaded concepts and imagery. I know it's been said that Evangelion is an overrated series (and I think it is, but most things are) but I think it's interesting that the writer suffers from manic depression. I know a few manic depressives, and a lot of the characters in NGE reminded me of them. I find it an interesting work from that angle, but I think there's a lot of pretentious bullcrap about how deep the whole thing is when there's a lot of shallow claptrap content in the series like the meaningless religious references. Perhaps if this new retcon drops that stuff, the whole thing will be improved. Ironically I thought the first ending where Shinji just decides to be happy was better than the WTF-crazy-as-2001: A Space Odyssey insanity of the second ending they made for it. More anti-climactic sure, and not a resolution that felt like it would really solve any of the main character's problems--but then I liked that the whole series could be seen as a delusion of a child battling the onset of psychosis. By that point, it was the only real way to take any of it seriously I thought.

I believe I even read an interview with Anno who said as much. Originally, they were planning to use more Buddhist type symbols and iconography, but the Powers That Be said "No effing way, it will freak everybody out too much" and hence they decided to borrow heavily (and loosely) from Judeo-Christian / Western mythos. Regardless, it all really works, and, at times, is very heavy, spooky, and deep. On a level where you don't need religion at all, I have none, but the first time I watched through all of the Eva, and the movies, I was filled with that sense of spiritual terror and release that religion inspires. Its really a brilliant (if, at times self-indulgent) show. This makes me very keen on seeing what a more restrained version of the story will look like. Anno is still at the helm, so I imagine (I hope) that he'll do something outstanding with it.. perhaps a little more focus and distance from the initial, obviously very emotional, first run, this could be the chacne to see the same story from a more mature (and stable) artist... we'll see... sounds promising so far... Oh yeah, and definitely bring the WETA Live Action EVANGELION!!!

Japanese audiences. When GAINAX was getting down to it, Anno was operating under the assumption that this would never go overseas, it (the story) being too "Japanese." It was thought, by the Powers, that using Buddhist / Eastern symbols-mythos in an apocalyptic manner might frighten audiences too much, whereas the more unfamiliar, but still symbolically powerful, Judeo-Christian symbols-mythos would be receieved much better. And it worked! Ironcially, I think using the J-C Western symbols-myths is also what helped its popularity over here, for precisely what the powes at GAINAX feared would make it unpopular or too frightening in Japan! Wowzersneato! No seriously, ironic, no?

Even in the series back when I was a diehard fan, I had absolutely no idea what the fuck they were talking about with the Angels, Adam and Lilith near the end. I couldn't tell whether the Angels were supposed to be alien or Earth-born or what. That could be tightened up a lot for these films and any live action one. It is slim pickings to cast it though, as Anno, Gainax and apparently ADV are real sticklers on age for the characters (Anno even says Emma Watson is too old to play Asuka). I have an almost memorex-like memory for obscure actors, but even I can't come up with many age appropriate American or European kids for those roles, much less any Japanese actors (no fucking idea), and it would be impossible to shoot a lot of what happened on the show with real adolescents.

It's all peripheral since the religious references were just plot devices, but I took the series (read: movie) to end with the beginning of the Book of Genesis; specifically Genesis 1:2, which reads, "The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving [sometimes translated "hovering"] over the surface of the waters." As I recall, the earth was formless and void at the denouement of End of Eva, with a dark sky and a shot of Rei (whose name means "spirit" in Japanese) hovering over the ocean. Shinji and Asuka (with her new brown eyes) became Adam and Eve, replacing the previous ones: Adam having been revealed as Lilith, leaving the Eva units ("Eva" being the German form of "Eve") as Lilith's offspring which some legends say were demons (Eva-01 in particular looking like the Japanese Oni type "demon").

They weren't striving for exactness with the religious texts. The basic premise is that when they discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls, they didn't release all to the public but kept from us certain prophesizing scrolls that spelt the end of life on earth or what can be interpreted as a rebirth or evolution of human beings into another stage. Out of that there'd be one chosen one who would decide the course humanity should take. Should humankind be wiped out? Should they become something new that would solve all their emotional delimmas that keep them forever in conflict, or should are humans fine as they are and try to start over? SEELE, a group of philantrophists with wealth and power decided to lead mankind onto the correct course and determine the outcome for themselves over what they as a group believed would be best for mankind. Gendo on the other hand wanted to usurp that role for himself because all he wanted was to get his wife Yui back and make up for never being a father to Shinji in order to pursue this course. However neither SEELE nor Gendo were given that opportunity, instead the spirit/alien being incarnated in Rei chose Shinji to be this 'chosen one' he is caught up in the instrumental Eva-01 and 'crucified' in a symbolic manner to indicate that instrumentality would occur through him. Unfortunately for humanity, Shinji is a tired, emotionally drained hurt terrified person when this occurs who simply wishes to give up and die himself because of all the events that led up to this climax so what will the outcome be? And that to me is Eva in a nutshell. There is no clear reason given for the events... Are they the result of God? Or is it the theory of panspermia that human life is of alien origin and technology, an artificial experiment itself? That remains a mystery and the show is all the better because it remains so even at the end.

Excellent synopsis and analysis. Are SEELE really philanthropists, though? Don't they murder more or less everyone at NERV? They seem just as opportunist and controlling as Gendo to me. They're out to generate apocalypse as well, just for their own goals. Anyways, another think to think on is the cyclical nature of the story; in the end we're left with two of the principal characters on a deserted blood red beach essentially harkening the Genesis story with a rather darker edge... "I feel sick." That just blew me away the first time I saw it all the way through. I really do think its the greatest anime of all times, flaws and self-indulgences included. Very heady, spooky stuff.

I suppose I use the term loosely... Basically powerful men who assumed control of world events themselves to match their own ideals by using the prophecies they'd obtained to secure a place for themselves on the world scale. They attempted to create their own angel as a tool for that very purpose who was Kowaru, but I think that despite their methods they really were genuinely motivated to lead mankind into a better future. At the end they realized they had lost control to Shinji and decided to play along anyway by having faith in the boy and fulfilling the prophecy. One of the best quotes I've ever heard was at the beginning of Death and ReBirth (Originally cut out from the series but re-included in the Director's Cut I think) goes something like, "Scientists, they think they have all the answers. They all suffer delusions of grandeur. They're all so caught up in their own petty speculations and hypotheses that they've lost complete touch with reality. Yet aren't they supposed to be the ones leading us on the quest for truth? How Ironic. Oh, they're far from altruistic. Discover brings joy. Understanding leads to control. They're just trying to impose their tiny wills on the chaos of the cosmos." In a way it sums up the controversies in science today and all the bullshit that masquerades as proven facts. But as far as its allegory to religion it might contrast something in Christianity where various groups try to fulfill prophecy themselves as if God personally left them explicit instructions to, compared to those that see that all such things are the will of God and they will happen on His account and he needs no imprompt assistance from us in such matters. So Seele is a group that attempts to carry out God's will of their own accord, but what they want is not in accord with what God desires when Shinji is chosen, a broken human being compared to the methodical, 'sane' and deliberateness and intelligently plotted course of the Wisemen's committee. They believed they were carrying out God's will and set a course and timetable that was not to be stepped away from and they wanted to ensure that Gendo carried out their wishes by remaining on schedule and not diverting from it. They constantly call any actions taken by him that move from their plan into account. However the end symbolizes that the best laid plans of men fall short at the behest of God or if other prefer, at something in the cosmos far greater than human beings are capable of understanding much less stand a chance at completely controlling... Which from there we can begin come down to our level to take a look at humanity's emotions, desires, attitudes, pleasures and motivations and all the things that drive us to behave in a particular way for ourselves and with relation to others and why hard it is for us to understand one another and grow closer. It is that which causes all the conflict in our lives and our inability to reach out to one another where our relationships just become so hopeless that we then want to shrivel and die or run away because it's all just so overwhelming in our hearts and minds on par with the galactic spectacle that is the Third Impact.

In a way getting back to the original quote, Eva compares that of scientists trying to make the universe fit their theories and ideas to that of religious men plotting out a course for God to take rather than allow God to act, and inevitably how human beings try to impose themselves on other, trying to get them to look at them a certain way, trying to get them to love them, trying to hurt them and make sure they know it or trying to get others to fit some sort of ideal that we've imagined them to be. Shinji can't be the ace pilot everyone's forcing him to be. Asuka can't get Kaji to look at her as a grown up. Shinji knows no possible way of getting close to his father. Misato can't get over what precisely she feels for hers. Even the ages of Shinji, Asuka and Rei display the adolescent theme of maturing, becoming sexually active beings and all in all it's the age where things become confusing as one transitions from childhood into adulthood. Eva tries to say these are all some pretty big things going on in our own lives now, look at the big picture past the spectacle of the robots and military and world catastrophic events and more about the barriers (AT fields) we put up around ourselves and how we react to invasions (Angels) who try to intrude into our lives and either cause harm or try to understand us (compare the angel attacks from the beginnings of the show to the ones that come at the end, notibly the one that puts Asuka into a Coma but coming into her to show her things she doesn't want to remember, followed by the one that invades Rei internally to bring her to realizations about how empty she is, and finally in Kowaru who reaches out to Shinji as a friend and intimately. and finally it all collides in the final Angel that is revealed to be mankind itself!) Evangelion is truly an amazing show and there has yet to be anything that lives up to it!

Johnno, I hope your not talking about evolution, here, because I believe evolution is more or less a proven hypothesis whereas intelligent design is not science at all, its faith. But truly, there are many cold, calculating men of science, just as there are cold, calculating, and manipulative men of faith, but for rationalities sake, I stick with science and cast a skeptical eye at faith and/or religion. For one, we have the demonstratable phenomenon, documented, catalouged, physical, logical; faith relies on the intangible, hopeful, dreams. It would be nice to think there were an intelligent designer who loves and cares for us, but that doesn't make it true. Just something to think about. please don't take this as bashing. I think that religion/faith can be a good thing, but not if it precludes rationality; its more a guiding metaphor than a document of reality or history. But anyways, if a man of faith is a man of peace (and fan of Evangelion), than he's a friend of mine. ;-) Peace.

Rei and Kaworu tell Shinji that everyone who died during Third Impact (Misato, Asuka, etc) can return if they wish. Asuka sure did. I am a sentimentalist and think Shinji and Asuka on the beach at the end were just the first two.

I think it needs to be stressed that a lot of this movie plays like a shot-for-shot remake. So if you're hoping for a totally new Evangelion experience, you may end up disappointed. This is kind of like X-Files: The Movie. The effects are bigger but the story has been diluted to appeal to a broader audience (I guess). That having been said, though, the new angel battles DO look great. Probably the best part of the movie. SPOILERS AHEAD I think the spoilers the poster was talking about are Lilith (who Misato shows to Shinji -- kind of an odd story beat this early on) and Kaoru (who shows up in the last 5 minutes and seems to have a SEELE affiliation of some kind). Lilith's appearance is somewhat different than I remember. She has the same "face" as the first angel. I think the second angel had the same "face" as well, I guess to show their connection. I can't remember if the third angel had the same face or not. *END SPOILERS* I think it's better to think of this as "Evangelion: Special Edition" than a totally new movie experience. The effects are better, but you're going to feel like you're watching a clip show in a lot of places, especially if you haven't seen the original series in a while. In all honesty, I didn't realize anything other than the angel battles and a few new scenes had been redrawn until I read this review. This is only for hardcore EVA fans or for people totally unfamiliar with the series. People who know the series and weren't totally thrilled with it should stay away. I would imagine they'd be bored.
