Shocker. There was just no way Quint ever woulda coulda liked it. I'm sure he could counter with a laundry list of what-if's that would have made it the bees knees for him, but I just feel it in my bones that no matter what it was or wasn't he would have hated it. And that's cool. I haven't seen it yet so maybe he's spot-on, but this was a marked movie from day one. In my heart of hearts I'm just hoping Zombie's next remake is of Jaws so this new feud can continue ever on into history.

After seeing this horrible remake, you put int words what I was trying to say to some friends. What made Michael Myers truly enacing in the original wasn't just his emotionless methodical way he killed... it was that there was no explanation for him. Loomis called him a monster, pure evil, that could not be explained. Michael comes from an average American hme with a normal family and is for reasons beyond understanding, he becomes an inhuman killing machine. In this crappy remake Michael is given a backstory of abuse and neglect and Loomis explains his progression into becoming a psychopath. Michael is demystified and humanized. And when adult Michael finally returns to Haddonfield it is rushed. I could care less about the three girls I barely met and, in fact, if it ween't for the fact one wore glasses, I would have never been able to tell their characters apart as we cut from one to teh other. The violence, hwever was more gritty and brutal, complete with splatter everywhere, so I'll give the film that. But the ending was awful... and the whole second act was terribly rushed and chaotic.

its a well written review that i can agree with alot. it pisses on that other review. but what i want to know is..... what exactly did u all want? i mean, this is where im getting confused. I still enjoyed the film, even if it wasnt amazing. iv not called this film amazing once. all i said was that i liked it. my arguments came from noone giving me a decent point. Well, is anyone that comes to this site surprised by this revelation?!? Although I have to hand it to Zombie for having balls the size of Kansas to attempt to remake, reimagine, or regurgitate Halloween! The thing he didn't take into consideration, that "no one" in HollyWank Remake Land takes into consideration, is how ingrained these films are in people's heads. It is almost impossible to ever overcome an obstacle of that magnitude. And Rob Zombie's Halloween is just one more reason, in an ever lengthening rope of reasons, that they'll use to hang themselves, instead of "creating" new films for fans to latch on to. Thanks for the review Quint, but I think i'll pass on this one.

You would think if anybody who really liked the original movie were compelled to do a remake, the two most glaring NO-NOs would be obvious: A) Don't try to explain away the mystery of Michael Myers and B) Don't turn it into a standard blood-and-gore-and-tits romp. You would think this would be apparent to ANYBODY. And yet Rob Zombie gleefully dives in and does both of these things very, VERY blatantly. The only thing I can think of is that he knew this was exactly what everyone doesn't want to see in a Halloween movie and just enjoys pissing people off. Am I giving him too much credit?

It must really burn Rob Zombie that Marcus Nispel got there first, because every single movie Rob Zombie makes comes out like a remake of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. He must REALLY adore that movie. Why do I think everybody is dogging Rob's version, it's because, we as a society that loves the original Halloween doesn't want to see a "Remake - Redue" and we expect the same retelling of the original. I will see the movie tonight and I have read all reviews, some good and some bad. Am I expecting a shot for shot remake, no. This movie is Rob Zombie's Halloween, not Rob Zombie's presents John Carpenter's Halloween. It is TWO Different movies, with somewhat of a same story line, that happens to have characters from a movie we all love. There are hundreds of movies that tell the same story with different characters and some with the same characters. Maybe Rob should have made Romeo and Juliet with the Meyers' and the Strodes', then maybe you would have like it.

I was never going to see this in the theater to begin with but reading that Malcom McDowell had his worst performance EVER - even worse than TaNk GiRl ?? - it wounds me in a commonwealth way. At least when he was cast in TV's Heroes, I expected him to act with a certain amount cheese. I will save my opinion for when I see it on movie channel cable, but I will state, emphatically that I dislike remakes. And it is our own fault... Executives, directors, screen writers and producers are showing their age. The films that they loved and inspired them are becoming "classics" and they are trying to "peter pan" themselves and the audience to recapture that feeling. Sometimes I feel like I am penalized for liking a movie too much, if they just go and make another one with the exact same story - but don't we all just cheer if we get a cameo or a callback. This is why we have had a glut of remakes in the past seven years. Not because the story needs re-telling or because it needs a new "edge", but because the "creative" arrogantly thinks that they can tell the story better than what came before. I have news for them: It's not working. Stop it.

Sure, there's still a bunch of wonky shit in there to have to digest (little Mikey talking, terrible McDowall delivery, Love Hurts -- oh god, does it hurt), but the entire cat & mouse finale is gone and there are plenty more moments that truly feel like throwbacks to J-Carp and what we all consider to be classic Myers touches (much more Michael stalking, better use of the classic score, actual provocation to make Michael snap, less Rush, less chain busting, plus one more scene with little Mikey freaking McDowell out). Though it could be that the theatrical is such a bomb that anything would seem better, my immediate feelings is that the workprint felt far more like a Halloween movie than the mind-numbing insanity of the theatrical cut. & Quint's right -- the TXCM shit @ the end is completely out of character, but thankfully, it's nowhere to be seen in the first cut. But don't get me wrong, the asthetic of Zombie's version is still jacked, but at least it seems as if he did get a bit more what the series is about the first time out. Sounds like another Weinstein intervention here, since I can't believe that Zombie would hack up his own film like that. & don't listen too much to him, he's sittin' pretty cozy with that 2-picture deal. He ain't gonna say shit when it comes down it. If I'm wrong and the backstory does come out, then we're in for one doozy of a tale, that's all I gotta say.

Thanks for the comments on the article. I don't know if you can say I'm following the hype considering this hype didn't exist before I read the script and wrote the review, the first review to hit on Zombie's take. At the time there was a huge divide, half the people saying I was stupid or didn't understand it or didn't understand how filmmaking worked and the other half taking every word I said and using it to fuel a hatred of Zombie and his work. I wrote the review as a fan of Devil's Rejects and as a fan of Halloween. I kept it fairly constructive for just that reason. I'm not claiming to have super natural senses, I'm just saying when I first voiced my concerns I caught a lot of flack from people telling me it wouldn't be in the final product and it is. Hence the "I told ya' so." I'm sure you guys will see the flick soon enough and hopefully you'll come back to share your opinions on it.

Saw a last-minute press screening of this last night. I'd write a review here, but I actually agree 100% with Quint. Rob Zombie says he loves the original "Halloween," but he basically gets rid of everything that made the original so scary. There's no suspense or style, the lead characters are very unlikable and the white trash characters are just purely grating at the beginning. And here's the thing; everyone will say "see this as it's own movie, don't compare it to the original." But Zombie keeps bringing back the music, old lines of dialogue and the mask to REMIND us of the original the entire time, so it's impossible not to make that comparison. Malcolm McDowell is terrible...although how good can you be with a line like "it must be nice living in denial. I'll have to try it sometime." Oh, and Quint...did you get a weird lesbian vibe from Laurie and her friends calling each other "sexy" and basically dry-humping each other several times?

If Zombie wanted to remake a slasher movie and add some backstory, why mess with a film that is pretty much perfect? I probably could have forgiven some of this had he remade, say, "Friday the 13th." No one's going to argue that it's a good movie, there's enough gore that Zombie could have had some fun and the series already gave Jason a backstory for Zombie to work with. Hell, I could have even accepted it if he remade "Friday" with Jason instead of his mother. But instead, he remade arguably the greatest slasher movie of all time and kept throwing in hints to remind us how good the original was...which only further reminded us how bad this was.

He seems to understand the stupidity of the whole "Last Girl" concept. You know, how throughout the movie the slasher has been death incarnate but when it comes to the "Last Girl" he becomes a complete bumbling klutz. So the rhythm of most horror movies, "Great Female kill at the top" then some so-so cutaway deaths, then "Great female kill" about an hour in and then nothing. The girl gets away and the killer is supposedly gone forever as the audience scoffs "He's dead, yeah right" Check Out "Wrong Turn" for a by-the-book presentation of this formula. However in "Devil's Rejects" Zombie actually throws in what the audience wants....a spectacular female death scene at the very end to cap off the film. (This also works great in non Zombie films like FD3 and Slaughter Studios) I say save the best for last. Let the "Last Girl" get hers. And let it be spectacular.

It was snuff porn. Also, none of the characters who you're supposed to root for were even remotely likable. Laurie Strode, esp. was annoying as hell. I wanted to give the film a fair shake and there were a few things in the first half of the film that I thought were interesting, but they were always overshadowed by sloppy filmmaking and bad acting. I actually laughed out loud the first time McDowell came on screen in his "hippie liberal psychiatrist" costume. Utter shit.

In a way, Zombie may come out on top. Think about this: it is better for this Remake (yes, remake) to be ridiculously bad than just mediocre and totally forgettable. I have a feeling he couldn't resist the money, and felt that if someone was going to remake it, it might as well be a fan than some hack who's never seen the original Halloween (and it still stuns me that there are people who admit to this...if you remotely like being thrilled when going to a movie, Halloween is mandatory).

may not be a definitive guide to whats good/bad. Not knowing what criteria they use in their cross section of critics, but they do feature a lot of the majors. As for horror films getting the snub, Zombie's previous did get a majority of negative reviews, but good reviews from the like of Variety, NY Post and good 'ol Roger Ebert. I think Quints review explained the major fault in Zombie's revision. By trying to create a back story/genesis for Michael Meyers and shoehorn a remake of Carpenter's night of terror into it, Zombie couldn't have it both ways and created two halves that don't equal a satisfying whole. The beauty of the original is that its timeframe is about an approxiamate 24 hour period. ( Original tagline " The night HE came home..") As far as the hype surrounding this being bad, well, the studio has admitted as much by releasing this without prior screenings to critics. Has any good film that the studio has faith in ever been released in that fashion? Don't think so.

That was just my thoughts on it. So far, Rob Zombie is batting .333 for my tastes. HO1K was totally a letdown. DR was significantly better than I ever expected it to be -- in my eyes (only), he appeared to learn from his first experience and showed signs of growth. Halloween may (or may not) be a step back; if anything, maybe it shows more technical progress. I think every filmmaker makes a small blunder at some point (with very few exceptions). I hate his music, but I do (did?) respect his love for the horror and sci-fi genre. I think he's probably a cool guy, but I don't dig some of the "art" he makes. I think he could still do some good, but he's got a bit of learning curve. Keep in mind, some filmmakers never learn from their mistakes, but I think Rob could, if DR was any sign. I would like to see him come out on top and do something good again -- seems to be one of the few modern horror filmmakers who cares about the genre, unlike the people who churn out trash like Saw 1-whatever.

I've only seen the workprint that leaked, but I enjoyed it immensely and much more so than the original. The movie is getting stellar reviews elsewhere rottentomatoes be damned. I'll be seeing the final cut tonight. Fuck all the hater on this over the hill website.

Because I love the original. As someone said earlier, he should have done TCM. The studio had to notice that Zombie's films are the opposite of Halloween, so they wanted to do something different this time. Fine. I understand that. What's the point if everything is exactly the same? The core of Halloween should have remained though, the child that chose to become pure evil without explanation, or conscience. Some small town street terrorized by a faceless man over the course of Halloween night. It's so simple, yet inconceivable. Zombie could have used that, injected some more fearsome shit into it and made something great. But it sounds like more of the same hillbilly insanity, with the focus more on the why than the how. It's how it happened that made it important! The boogeyman doesn't scare adults because there is always an explanation when you get older. There has to be, so that we can forget and return to our normal lives. When there is no name, no face, or no reason, the safety of the ordinary is lost. And the fear returns. Anyway, I will try to take it on it's own merit.

Oh, and for the record: Live free or (GUNSHOT) had "stellar" reviews too. But it's still a worthless piece of shit in my book, so I'm not a Zombie apologist: the guy entertained me with his music when I was a teenager in the early 90's, but I'm far from impressed with his movies so far. Gotta stick to the music, perhaps?

Movies are not made for movie buffs to disect over and over whats wrong with them. they are made to entertain. And you cant make the perfect movie everybody will like. Some ppl may hat the original. Does not mean it sucks. I know people who think Lord of the rings are the 3 longest boring movies ever made. So what a lot of ppl liked them obviously. A lot of ppl will like Robs halloween. I've said this before, but I'm not opposed at all to troubled childhood stories, when they work and create pathos. One of the best examples is that of Francis Dolarhyde in Red Dragon. I hate here how everything is so cliched white trash. If you're going to do this, at least make it original. Even Michael getting picked on at school by bullies is the standard "faggot", "suck dick", "mom's a whore" routine we've seen a million times before. Michael making thousands of masks is also pretty stupid as it's not they're his symbol, it's jsut something he conveniently used, and the film also seems to imply that Michael being in an institution for 15 years with no friends is what drives him crazy, WHICH COMPLETELY MISSES THE POINT! There are some minor good things here, but I really wish it was just another movie entirely. Thos deleted scenes sound even worse, and no Spencer Trilby, it's not scary. It's got those same jump scares that today's horror has adopted. There's one tense moment with Laurie and Loomis in the car at the end, but the commercials even show how this scene plays out. There was no need to remake this movie.

In this interminable turd, this godawful "director" managed to bore an entire audience to death. The guy can't frame a shot to save his fucking life. Okay, so is "take a shit" some sort of new slang phrase with which I'm unfamiliar? I mean, at first, I thought perhaps referring to the mask as the "gotta take a shit mask" meant that the face on the mask appeard to be making an expression that implied immediate need of bowel evacuation. Then I remembered that I'd read something else on this site where someone referred to Rodrigo Santoro's character on Lost as the "take a shit guy" (although I admittedly haven't seen any of his episodes, so I suppose that could be explained by actually watching them) and then another article where someone referred to a "take a shit helmet." (Some war movie, I think.) What am I missing?

Watched Dedvil's Rejects when it first came out on video and let me sum up the story for those of you out there who haven't seen it yet: 3 twisted fucks kill rednecks in Texas. That's it. That's your story, character development, character motivation, overall arc. 3 twisted fucks kill rednecks in Texas. Wow. Nice job Rob. Then last night, out of sheer morbid curiosity, & cause I just got done working and was bored at 3am, I happened to come across House of 1000 Corpses on IFC at it"s very beginning, and I thought what the hell, why not? Let's see if I'm wrong about this guy. Let's see if I'm judging him too harshly after only watching the only other movie he's ever made. My verdict: Devil's Rejects was the Godfather next to this piece of shit. Why you ask? First off it's a pretty blatant Texas Chainsaw remake. (Apparently Zombie jerks off 3-4 times a day at the alter of TCM cause from what I've read his Halloween Remake is also a sort of TCM rip-off.) The whole sick TCM family is here, in the middle of what sorta looks like Texas again, (what a shock there), and you have your mythical boogeyman figure, ala Leatherface, named Dr. Satan, which people won't shut the fuck up about the entire length of the flick. Main difference between this and TCM though? Whereas Leatherface was a scary as shit iconic figure who weighs prominently in his movie, Dr. Satan appears all of 5 GODDAMN MINUTES IN THIS P.O.S.!!! Are you kidding me!!! All the hype for this s.o.b. and you only have him in the movie for 5 GODDAMN MINUTES?!!........saddest part about that? He was probably the only interesting character in the whole movie......and he had not a single syllable of dialogue besides some grunting of course. Hell, the only redeeming factor was watching Dwight Schroote get turned into a man-fish. Yay. My ultimate point: if anyone in Hollywood, who has any significant power in movie-making is reading this, please for the love of God stop letting Rob Zombie make movies, please, cause if this keeps up it's only a matter of time before he gets his hands on Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street, and decides to give Jason or Freddy a homicidal cannibal redneck family who loved torturing animals/people/fire ants/WW2 vets/etc. Stop the madness already.

Halloween by John Carpenter is one of my top 5 favorite films ever, so I was apprehensive about this film. And if compared side by side, the new one doesn't stand up to the original, not by a long shot. But I did enjoy this film, as its own work. Rob should have made this film with new characters and a new title, because he couldn't live up to the name. But as a stand-alone work, it's a very watchable and solid film.

Now, before the flaming begins, hear me out. I saw the workprint, so maybe there are some things that drastically changed the feel of this movie. Let us all admit, nothing is going to top the original. Nothing. But I really liked the whole Michael as a kid thing. I thought Loomis was much more connected to Michael in Zombie's version. I loved the soundtrack to the movie, and I loved how it was clearly reflected that Michael has some severe mental illness. Like, for example, Michael putting the mask on and becoming this evil killer child. But then in stark contrast to that, we get to see Michael's first clinical interview with Loomis, and it is hard to see the evil kid. He even denies doing the horrible things mentioned at his trial. He is concerned for his family. My only real complaint about the movie is that I thougt Michael was just too fucking big. I am glas this movie was made. I feel it adds to the Halloween mythos. Just think of how many different stories are told when a big tragedy happens in the real world. Different stories for the same event. I view this flim as the same. It is telling the story of the Boogieman. It is different from the original, but ask 5 people to tell you about an event they just saw,, and you will have 5 different stories. That is all, flame on.

I didn't like it at all. I jumped once, but other than that, not very compelling. Like Quint says, the whole backstory thing really took the "edge" out of Michael. I was also distracted by the fact that Zombie seemed DETERMINED to put every one of his casting alums into the film. It was really distracting. Instead of trying to bring us into the world of Michael Myers, their mere presence SCREAMED: "Remember me? I was Capatin Spaulding on Devil's Rejects!" Bad choice, Rob, bad choice. Also, granted: Rob Zombie isn't known for holding back the profanity. But C'MON! Is it really necessary to throw in profanity just for the sake of throwing in profanity? It definitely didn't make the plot better. As if Rob decided while writing the script: "Huh huh, how bout I pepper this bitch up by writing some fucks here, some cunts here, LOTS of bitches here...." Great point, Quint, about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre theory. TOO OBVIOUS that it mirrored Leatherface. I kept thinking to myself: "Did Rob ACTUALLY think this could NOT look like TCM?" BLEAH! Wasn't House of a 1,000 Corpses basically the general plot as The Texas Chainsaw Masacre? I know there was no Leatherface character, but some of the specific plot points were lifted directly TCM. If he did a reimagination of TCM, I can't see how it would be infinitely different than House of 1,000 Corpses. I think he would have been better off doing Friday the 13th, Motel Hell (think this movie is perfect for his style of filmmaking), or Alone in the Dark (to name a few). I think those movies fit Zombie's style better and he hasn't done them already.

That pretty much sums up zombie...a hack in the director's chair and a hack in the recording studio. Niether his "films" or his "music" live up to the hype he attempts to portray - or that his inexplicable legion of fans seem to be seeing while the rest of us scratch our heads waiting for all this guy is supposed to know about classic horror to manifest... Zombie - and you, it would seem - need to learn just what classic horror really is. Here's a hint: "Texas Chainsaw overblown but not very good in reality massacre"...just forget about that crap and look deeper.

the weakest parts of the movie were those that stuck too closely to Carpenteria. It was messy, crass, overblown, trashy -- everthing I want from a Rob Zombie flick -- and there were actually moments of real tension and hell, even real emotion, that peek their heads out. It's too bad nobody is willing to meet this half way. Every negative comment I'm reading stems from pre-conceived "I told ya so"-itis. It may not appeal to everyone's sensibilities, but it was far from weak. Who the fuck cares about it's representation of the original? Grow up. And I think with comments from Quint like it being Malcolm McDowell's career worst illustrate just how much of an ax he has to grind -- OR he's only seen McDowell in A Clockwork Orange and the Mick Travis trilogy, in which case yes, it's his worst.

I definately thought there was some nice direction and cinematography in Panic Room but sadly I didn't give a shit bout a CGI crane shot going through a coffee pot on a kitchen table. It's a blink and you miss moment, but it's there and glares at you endlessly once you've picked up on it... The scene where the legless zombie drops down from the rafters. Again -- The scene where the LEGLESS zombie drops down from the RAFTERS. Eliminate this one scene and I could forgive the absence of social commentary from the original, even with the zombie baby scene still intact.

Yeah, that script needed more than a re-write, it needed an intelligent writer. The fact is Carpenter had an amazing faculty for crafting suspense. Zombie relied on what he considered to be a faculty for understanding psychopaths. There was just no enlightenment in the script psychologically or artistically. Having a child torture animals is just regurgitating something he might have thumbed through on Dahmer. Sure its a sign of 'pathic behavior, but it isn't the prime example. You need more than white trash parents and a hard on for killing animals to become the definition of a psychopath that loomis talks about. The emperor simply had no clothes.

i'm sorry ok, but i have to say i think Quint is being way to harsh on this movie. ok so you didnt like the script when you read it, but it just feels like you haven't gotten over that dude. you say you wanted to be impressed but i think in the back of your mind you where never going to give it a far chance! for me the first part of the film was the best part, i thought the kid did a kick ass job! and as far as the family being over the top i thought that worked to, this isn't real life dude its a horror movie! everything is hyper real. i do agree it copied the original to much when the killing spree started and the ending was a little weak but come on its not bad, i enjoyed it, for what it is! it was never going to even come close to the original thats a given, but compared to most remakes it worked pretty well, i'm not a huge zombie fan but i do think he's intresting, his films all have that dirty trailer trash look and feel, i got tht from the start of this, we have to remember he's only knew to this game and i think he showa some promise, horror needs somebody who will get down and dirty and try some things a little different, i'm not saying its him but maybe, anyway thats just my view, forget everything you've heard and give it a chance its not bad! oh nd best horror remake, the hills have eyes, pure class! thats the first one i'm talking about, the second was a big pill of steaming shit! and the trailer was so good! peace out

I had a sneaking suspicion that this remake wasn't going to be any good. Now I liked Rob Zombie's other films, but I knew that style of film making wouldn't do the original justice. That movie was more suspense thriller than slasher flick, and this one sounds like crap, whatever it is. On another message board I posted that if I wanted to see a good copy of Halloween, I would approach my DVD collection and reach between The Shawshank Redemption and The Longest Yard (the original, not the bastard child they foisted upon us with Adam Sandler) and pick up my copy of Halloween. That is truly a good movie.

Rob Zombie has said that he wants someone who watches his films to either love them or hate them because if the viewer offers no emotional response, he has failed as a director. Well, I am here to tell Mr. Zombie that I HATED his “re-imaging” of John Carpenter’s classic tale of Michael Myers. Rob Zombie’s Halloween has finally proven to me and hopefully the world that the horror genre and perhaps the entire film industry have gone too far with sequels, remakes and “re-imaginings”. The problem with his version of Halloween and, in my opinion, all of his films are that they lack the true heart and soul that a horror film should have. This is most evident in Scout Taylor-Compton’s portrayal of Laurie Strode. Carpenter’s film focused primarily on this character and the events of Halloween night through her experiences. Mr. Zombie’s film is so focused on the Michael Myers character that when Laurie Strode is in danger, I just simply did not care. Her character is as faceless and emotionless as Michael Myers himself. How can the viewer care if a character like this lives or dies? The answer is that you don’t and that is why, above all, this “re-imaging” fails so miserably. If Mr. Zombie wanted to do an “origin” story, then that is what he should have done – not the mix and match story that was the final product. As far as the origin of Michael Myers goes, I did find the segment in the mental hospital to be the most compelling and entertaining of the film but my hopes were soon dashed when we learn the final outcome of Danny Trejo’s character Ismael. This is the point where the film lost me and never got me back. From that point on, it was just a “kill by the numbers” slasher film with a much to long climax that could have been trimmed by at least 15 minutes. Before I end this rant, let me quickly discuss the use of John Carpenter’s score in Mr. Zombie’s film. When word first came out that he was not going to use the score, there was a huge uproar in the horror community and eventually the score was used. I am here to say that it would have been better for Mr. Zombie to come up with an original score as to not tarnish the work of Carpenter by associating it with this abomination. Truth be told, I have not like any of Mr. Zombie’s films. To me, they seem to be the work of, not a fan of the horror genre, but of a director for hire who is only in it for a handsome paycheck. If the best thing that I can say about his version of Halloween is that I finally got to see Danielle Harris’ breasts, then it is evident that the film missed it’s mark. I went into this film with very low expectations hoping to be surprised by a new version of an already perfect classic horror film. I walked out feeling like a man who had just been with a prostitute – Screwed, out of money and full of shame. How could I have been so easily tricked? I plead to all of you out there to no longer continue to support needless sequels, remakes and “re-imaginings” of classic films that don’t need to be “re-imagined”. This has never been more important than now with the remakes of Escape From New York, The Thing and Near Dark on their way. Honestly, if they announce a remake of Big Trouble in Little China, I will literally shoot myself just as Sheri Moon’s character did in Halloween except instead of home movies playing on the screen it will be Big Trouble in Little China. For now, I’ll just remember how good films like The Decent and Behind the Mask were and pray for the day when I can be as thrilled and excited as I was when I first saw them. My comments may seem harsh but honestly, what did everyone involved in this project think our reactions would be to a “re-imaging” of Halloween - Gratitude?

I am a huge fan of the original and have watched it dozens of times. I've also seen all the Halloween sequels (2, 4 & 7 not bad, 3, 5, 6, & 8 utter shit). When I heard that it was being remade, I was skeptical to say the least. When I heard Zombie was involved, I thought it could go either way, but that it would at least not be a bland, tired remake (think The Fog, Amityville, Black Christmas). I didn't care much for "Corpses" but I dug the hell out of "Rejects". Vast improvement in directing style and story telling. I saw the film Saturday night, and I actually enjoyed it. Now, it doesn't touch the subtlety, atmosphere, and mood of the original, but it's still an enjoyable horror film. I liked the young Michael stuff (all hinted at in the original, only expanded here with a trailer trash family life infused in). When the film picks up where the original begins in earnest (Halloween day), my biggest complaint was that it was a bit rushed. I also thought the multiple false endings was a bit much. The actual ending, though, was a pretty sweet, high octane finish. And it was not very much like TCM, other than the hulking Michael Myers, and even then only visually really. Despite these complaints(and a few nitpicky things like "Love Hurts" and the "was that the Boogeyman?" stuff), I still really dug the film. Zombie managed to pay homage to the original while making it different enough that it wasn't just a vanilla Gus Van Sant retread (and the Carepenteria stuff wasn't the "shot-for-shot" exagerration I'd heard). I also really liked Zombie's use of the classic score along with "Don't Fear the Reaper" and, of course, "Mr. Sandman". One of the better entries in the series, no doubt. BTW, Fincher's best movie is "Seven", with "Fight Club"a close second, "The Game", "Zodiac" (a bit boring in the middle, I thought), "Panic Room" (sucked), and then "Alien3".
