Hitting him with a Newsies questions right off the bat was fucking awesome. I've always wanted to hear him reflect on that, as I watched that movie quite a bit as a child. I had heard he never wanted to do it and still hates it. Nicely done. For anyone that wants to see Mr. Bale do a whole lot of singing and dancing, which is really quite hilarious considering the work he has done since, please check it out.

That hairy, grotesque douchebag Devin Faraci made a good point about Bale's on-screen persona being so unrelentingly grim. I take his point that at some point Bale should do something a little 'lighter'. I don't know... like a rom-com with Kate Beckinsale or something. We know he does tortured and confliced as good as anybody, how about he brings the funny at some point.

WTF is wrong with focusing on the movie that Bale is currently in? wolvenom, clearly you only read what you wanted to read as the precursor to the title of the headline. It mentions a few films and not just Batman. There will be plenty of Batman to talk about closer to the film. What more needs to be said that we all already don't know.

Yeah, I read Devin's write-up there, and totally agree. I don't see Bale really playing different characters - it's like he only plays roles where he can brood through the entire film. Woe is me, woe is Christian! I'd like to see him do something lighter, too - just to show some range.

While I see his point, Bale takes roles that he's passionate about... Shouldn't that be the case with every actor? Why does he have to prove himself to you by doing another genre?

I'm sure if there was a romantic comedy script that interested him on some level, as far as story and character arc, he'd take it, but obviously that hasn't been the case.

Funny you should mention Bale and Clive Owen in the same sentence. Because one thing I really like about BOTH of those actors is that I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about them. Reads like you just got done watching Inside The Actor's Studio, or maybe you stole a bunch of Lipton's fucking cards or something.

When you were all 'Christian...' I imagine you giving him a passionate soul gaze and him frantically signaling his people with his feet that they needed to rescue him. Then as he was wrenched away you quickly asked him about Batman and Bob Dylan.

I think that it would be more effective if you were less spaced out than the talent you're interviewing, but maybe less entertaining.

Capone, admirable job duder. We had Bale on our television show to talk up 'Rescue Dawn', and the second we touched on Batman he flat out told us he wasn't going to talk about anything but 'Dawn'. It's understandable, but a lot of people thought he was a prick about it. The man who plays one of the most iconic characters in the history of storytelling shouldn't be shocked that he gets asked about it all of the time.
I think Bale's afraid he'll end up like Michael Keaton.
by wolvenom
Aug 30th, 2007
06:04:28 AM
It might explain why he's hesitant to talk about batman all the time. The way I see it is he doesn't want to be like Keaton, one day wandering through times square in rags repeatedly mumbling 'Im Batman' "Mr. Keaton Sir, My name is Officer Wilkins and I'm afraid we can't have you begging on the streets anymore" 'IM BATMAN!' "yes Sir we know but you're going to have to stop asking people for money." 'IM BATMAN!' "Sir am I going to have to use extreme force?" 'IM BATMAN!' Christian Bale and Clive Owen in some Sam Spade, Maltese Falcon, film noirtype of thing. Can you that. Bale and Owen, the two actors who define cool in the 21st Century, doing a film noir together. And Owen's gotta have a trench cot. In fact that should be in contract for all his movies. A trech coatc just magnifies Owen's cool factor by about a hundred. And Bale, buisiness suit in the office planer clothes on the streets to blend in the he makes it all look cool.

But I'll see The Dark Knight purely out of respect for Bale. The man is one of the best actors working today, in the same league as Daniel Day-Lewis in my book. Bale probably doesn't often talk about Batman as that movie has enough hype already, whereas films like Rescue Dawn need all the promotion they can get, and are films that Bale is obviously just as proud of. As for him being 'lighter', allot of his work in American Psycho is extremely light and damned funny, but he sure can release the crazy.

Why the fuck would I want to watch a modern wanked-out version complete with everything I hate about movies these days, when the original is playing on Encore Westerns this month? Russell Crowe is no Glenn Ford and Christian Bale is certainly no Van Heflin. Don't get me wrong, Bale is a fine actor. But I'm sick of his fanwhores (every one of them is 400 pounds of pure queerbait) flopping to their knees, jaws agape, waiting with lipsmacking glee for another facial from the guy. Remakes suck.

back in the early days of yore, before blogging and paris hilton, bale was the most-searched person on the interwebs for years. his fan base is sick. us girls love that brooding shit and the talent helps. but i don't think he should do something lightweight, even if the thought of him and kate beckinsale skipping through the streets of new york while 'ain't no mountain high enough' plays on the soundtrack. remember when ralph fiennes did that ghey movie with jennifer lopez? 'nuff said.

you know what? i gleaned some intriguing things from that interview, and i don't feel like i hardly EVER learn something about the person in interviews. i learned that christian bale is very guarded maybe because he feels not so knowledgable about film. he's obviously a visceral actor but not somebody who studied hitchcock or anything. i mean, i'm sure he's a smart guy but his answers were cagey in a strange way, like he felt uncomfortable in his own world. ps, his family life: he married winona ryder's former assistant and had a kid.

Bale is the best American actor alive today
by Mahasamatman
Aug 31st, 2007
08:18:01 AM
Too bad he's not American. No, actually, he's just astoundingly good. And he has no formal training. I read an interview where he said he regrets never having taken an acting class or getting any training and that he will--one day. God, I hope not. He is so totally authentic and unself-conscious, and the best thing about him is that he UNDERPLAYS everything. When everyone around him goes big, big, BIG, he goes small, tight, intense. SO so good. Watch _The Actor's Studio_ and it becomes instantly clear how easily it is to fuck up an actor with all this self-important about "the craft of acting." Bullshit. In my twenties, I was in a few stage plays, medium-sized productions. All acting is, is doing it, and not worrying about looking cool or looking like an idiot. That's all it is. And we have very few actors who can do that. Go watch a Brad Pitt or a George Clooney movie. Tell me that the number one thing on their minds in every scene isn't "How do I, Brad Pitt, come off playing this scene?" What they should be thinking about is the scene. That's all it is. SO I hope Bale never gets any formal training, which often seeks to put the actor in touch with his authentic self, first, like in some kind of bullshit pop psychology ("You must know and understand yourself completely before you can truly seek to become someone else...") and what ends up happening is that the self remains paramount. All it is is doing it. Honestly. And it's not even hard.

I always like the interviews that talk about the experience of filmmaking and acting, not just stupid hype. Did anyone bitching about the lack of Batman stuff ever consider that he may be under contract NOT to talk about the latest film? It's not that he doesn't want to. I think if an intelligent interviewer asked an intelligent question about Batman within the context of acting or his career, Bale would have no problem answering it. But he's not going to give out spoilers, for chrissakes. The guy is a pro, after all.

Anyone hear that interview with him and Terri Gross on NPR? She asked how he managed to lose his Welsh accent and he basically said that he was so used to speaking in an American accent that he just slipped in and out of it depending on who he was around without having to think about it.

Maybe its just me, but that seems pretty impressive.

Go rent the original 3:10 to Yuma
by GRKent
Sep 3rd, 2007
12:34:28 AM
They should've called this "2:40 to Yuma" because it falls apart in the last half hour. The original is listed at 92 minutes and this remake is about a half hour longer. There are no spoilers here, but it just takes a left turn with a half hour to go that leaves you wondering why on earth they would do that. By the way, Ben Foster as the lead henchman, Charlie Prince, is great. To be fair there' a lot of nice back story -- although none of it's necessary.

It's totally understandable why he wouldn't want to talk about Batman all the time, particularly while he's still making The Dark Knight. He can't exactly discuss it yet. And he is SO MUCH MORE than Bruce Wayne, even the excellent Bruce Wayne that Nolan, Goyer et al have cooked up. Mentioning the word 'cooked'...the FUCKING BOOKS ARE COOKED AT AICN!!!
