This is a couple of weeks past the point, but - it just occurred to me that this column didn't give a mention to the last issue of this run of Queen and Country (Rucka's best work, IMHO). Granted, that book was late on something like a Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine scale, but still... Where's the love for Tara Chace?

I have to say, I hear a lot of complaints about the story and the pacing of Whedon's series, but I still can't think of a single example of an interesting X-Men take besides Whedon since the Morrison run on New X-Men. I think in the end, like any other Whedon effort, these books will shine because of their attention to detail, their character work (and yes, the "moments"), and their exploration of core themes. Morrison's plots were totally outrageous but the way he presented interesting and thought-provoking thematic elements was astounding. Same thing here. I still think what Whedon has done with Cyclops in this book is probably one of the most interesting takes on the character ever. And I think the plots in Astonishing ultimately are in service to the characters and not the other way around.

The horrible publishing schedule has been a huge problem, because I read the synopsis on the first page of this issue, and realized I'd completely forgotten most of what the fuck was going on. That's the biggest reason the little moments stand out...the plot is admittedly a bit tedious to begin with, and stretched out with all the delays...well, I'm a huge Whedon fan, but I have to agree with Bug. I just haven't cared that much about what's going on from a storyline perspective. I do love the characterizations though, so it's never a bad read. Just not a terribly compelling one at the moment.

He writes a book that centers around the characters personalities, not the outward fight/plight of mutants. That'd be cool, except this guy has no idea what the characters are like. It's like he has all his old comics from Claremont's days, writes it based off that, and speaks nothing of the modern developments that effected those characters. Hence, what a fucking tool.
Wolverine and Aunt May

Dude, I said in the review Wolverine having a healing factor wasn't a slam dunk. But we're talking a comic book world with comic book logic being applicable. Wolverine is a teammate, he has a healing factor. You also have Doctor Strange, master of the mystic arts and knowledgable as a real world doctor. I'm saying there is the potential via comic book logic for Strange to be able to find a way to tap into that healing factor in some way. Is it a stretch? Yes. That's why I mentioned it as just one of a zillion possible courses of action Spider-Man could have taken but didn't. And even if it is far fetched I still think it is a more plausible scenario than Spider-Man turning to crime and taking the burden of Aunt May on all by himself.

This actually goes back to a way way earlier change in Spidey's status. If this was years ago when Spider-Man was a solo player this plot might have been a bit more plausible (I still think even then he would have approach Reed Richards for help). But by making him a member of a group, giving him connections to other heroes for help, this down trodden lone wolf with no choices bs just doesn't play. AT ALL.

At this point even Jarvis wouldn't stand for it if Tony Stark was an ass about helping May.

I probably would hate it if a transfusion of Wolverine's blood would somehow heal Aunt May, but Peter has a lot of friends in the medical community that would help him. How about Curt Connors who has helped Peter out quite a few times in the past in between transformations into the Lizard? Or Night Nurse? Doesn't she specialize in this type of discreet medical attention?? Plus, Pete is quite a formidable scientist himself. If he could whip up web fluid for years, I'm sure he'd be able to follow a few medical procedures. Hell, I'd even buy it if MJ had some experience with medicine through playing a role on TV...I'm easy. I'm a comic book fan. I'll buy just about anything if it's told in a fun and dynamic manner!

Seriously. The first thing I thought, when I read how goddamned stupid and convoluted this storyline is, is "why didn't Peter take May to see the Night Nurse?" IT'S WHAT SHE DOES. IT'S HER ONLY REASON FOR EXISTING. So why go to her, when there's so much bullshit contrivance to be gained from Peter acting COMPLETELY OUT OF GODDAMNED CHARACTER YET AGAIN?!? "Oooh, I forged hospital papers for no good reason...I'm such a bad person!" Jumpin' jeebus, what a load of horseshit.

I swear, JMS can't get out of the comics industry fast enough. The only thing he did halfway right at Marvel was left to languish on its own for the last year and a half, dying a slow, pointless death, while he continues unabated ruining one title after another. Go back to Canadian-produced genre TV already, guy. I bet people can't wait for you to do a badass spinoff to "Andromeda" or some shit.

off the top of my head, i can only think of two characters that i'd like to see get the "all-star creator anthology treatment." first, obviously would be superman, because, well.....he's frackin' superman. and if there is any other character as open to interpretation as batman it's probally superman.

second, it would probally be nice to see captain american get the anthology treatment, with him being dead and all. just a nice little tribute book with a bunch of diffrent writters and artists telling storys from diffrent points in caps history. how cool would it be to get james robbinson doing a Cap A story set during WWII? or too see how cap would look drawn by tim sale or any other artist not usually know for drawing the character?

I also bailed on Astonishing when the Hellfire Club came on board. This book went from exciting the shit out of me to a pretty fast snoozeroo. And yes, not appearing on the stands regularly contributed to walking away on it. I spend too much money as it is on comics, and deemed Astonishing one I could cut back on. (And yes, the Aunt May in jeopardy story line seems too soap opera and done before -- although I did like the Kingpin beat-down -- but here's a question -- didn't ol' Fatty get shipped out of the country at the end of the previous DD arc? I have nothing against Slott. My problem is I liked many of the writers that have been working on Spider-Man. I generally like JMS. In my opinion Marvel in general has just put Spider-Man into a position where I think it's difficult to write Spider-Man in an enjoyable way. More than the writers I blame Marvel for creating an unworkable scenario for them to work in. Forcing the black suit on Spidey, the whole Civil War crap. Actually for a number of characters I think the Civil War/Initiative has made for good fodder. For Spider-Man I think it's just a huge annoyance. I'll give him a shot to see if he can make ASM work with the current state of the Marvel Universe but I ain't holding out much hope.

Marvel is going to try something that isn't that different from what DC has tried to do with their weekly 52 and COUNTDOWN series. They are going to cancel SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN and FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN and only have one ongoing SPIDER-MAN title, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. This title will be released three times a month. The series will feature a different set of creators for each storyarc that runs through the title. You'll get four issues of Spidey written by Dan Slott then a three issue arc by Zeb Wells or something like that. There will be underlying themes and subplots that connect all of the issues, but the central story will be handled by the writer of that specific arc. A guess a SPidey conference was held with all of the creators so they can all be on the same page.

The focus is supposed to be on making Spidey fun again and establishing his supporting cast which used to be pretty damn strong.

Lately, all Spidey titles have sucked ass due to numerous things. JMS introduced the Spider-Totem a few years ago when he first started writing the title. This suggested that spidey's powers were more of a mystical nature and the radiation more or less freed these powers that were already a part of Peter Parker and a part of other Spider-like characters throughout history. Along the way, Spidey was given new powers such as bone spikes which come out when he is in dire jeopardy, amped up strength and agility, and the ability to create his own webs from his wrists. Spidey could also read movement and sound from these webs much like an amped up version of his own Spidey sense.

Last year, Spidey unmasked himself on national television to show the world his support of Iron Man's Superhero Registration Act which required heroes to register their real names with the government in order for the heroes to be more responsible for their actions. Spidey followed Iron Man and his Pro-Registration heroes for a time and fought those opposing the registration act in last year's Civil War. Spidey then realized this was a terrible decision and switched sides, making him a hunted man.

Taking advantage of his revealed identity, the Kingpin hired a gunman to assasinate Peter. Instead, Aunt May was shot and now is laying near death in a hospital. The last few issues of all of the SPidey series have focused on Peter's desperate attempts to save Aunt May while avoiding the Pro-Registration police and villains who now know his secret identity.

Now, we are coming up on a special "event" called One More Day, where writer JMS and artist Joey Q will try to tie up all of the loose ends and probably unsatisfyingly return everything to status quo just in time for the BRAND NEW DAY relaunch of the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN series (coming out thrice monthly). How Slott and Wells can make Spidey fun again is beyond me, but I have to say I did have a whole helluva lot of fun reading Slott's Free Comic Book Day one shot of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

I need a nap after all that.

made in the style of Y Tu Mama Tambien and Cuaron, a roadtrip film, since they often were on a roadtrip. Just very guerilla and indie, a Jim Jarmusch superhero movie. Astonishing has been astonishingly mediocre since the start. I love Joss but Christ it is a boring book and always has been. The retcons with Emma were unappreciated and the space story bores me to death. As for Spidey I hope they don't undo the unmasking, but I think I'm probably screwed. What character would you want to see get the all-star creator anthology treatment? I'd say Spider-Man. Hulk. Superman. The Fantastic Four. All obvious choices, but all of them would be really cool to see in little 8-page bursts from All-Star creative teams. I kind of wanted to say Daredevil, but his stories are best in long, personal runs. Everybody kind of forgets that Captain America: Red, White, And Blue HC from a couple years back, but it was really friggin awesome.

Quesada has been griping about the Spider-marriage ever since he became EiC, so I'm betting they had a reboot of the Spidey titles planned for quite some time and the recent stories have just been him telling JMS to go nuts and see how much stuff they can get away with. Hence the unmasking, The Other etc. Makes sense because I can't believe they considered a secret ID-less Spidey could ever be sustainable. Actually, did ANY interesting stories come out of this past year of Spider-Man without a secret identity? You'd think that for such a big shake-up they could at least get some mileage out of it. Just goes to show how badly it was conceived and handled.

Damn it, I want to hate this book, because I still think IronMan is now Marvel's best villain, but I loved this issue! The death of some minor Initiative operative is off scene but particularly nasty, courtesy of the Graviton. They need to get rid of the Extremis from Tony's body somehow and reduce his power level a bit. He could take on most of his rogues gallery at once the way he is written right now, and that makes it tough to challenge him without getting Authority level threats. I'm enjoying the return of the Mandarin as well.
Whoah Whoah Whoah!! Re: JMS & Whedon

11:28:16 AM
Okay there's a lil' too much hate goin' on here, and the Whedon hate is a bit hypocritical ESPECIALLY from YOU 'bug. Time to drop some logic and set a few things straight.

JMS: Did any of you read Rising Stars or Midnight Nation? The man can write his socks off but EVERYONE here seems to keep forgetting that much of what he's writing at Marvel has been by editorial mandate. Given the industry-politics saavy of this group I have to say I'm a bit annoyed at how much you are overlooking your own knowledge for the sake of a bitchfest. I agree with the 'Wow, that was dumb.' regarding the mystical angle but ANYTHING CW/BiB/OMD you'd be more accurate directing that at JoeyQ. JoeS is just trying his best to make decent sandwich from a pile of shitty ideas.

Whedon: Okay for as much bitching (that I agree with) about Marvel making characters bend to storylines that I've witnessed on this site over the last year, you'd think Whedon's shot at character driven stories would be a breath of fresh air. Whedon himself felt the Danger arc was bit off and I myself have found the delays between issues to damn near kill any excitement I have for the book. NONETHELESS, it is STILL the best 'In service of the characters' type stories that you've seen in ANY of the X-books for the last 15 (FIFTEEN you shitheads!) fucking YEARS. Furthermore it the TRUEST depiction of these characters that you've seen in these last 15 years.

Grr Argh indeed.....

That is my second favorite piece of Ross artwork and, for me, it says more about the character of Bruce Wayne than all the origin retellings ever will.

My favorite Ross work, btw, is that panel of Giant Man stepping across a New York City street from MARVELS. The freakishness. The World's Fair Wonder. The early 60s Marvel, so great because no one was looking. A window from the real world in the fantastic. Which is why I prefer Ross at Marvel over DC. Marvel's characters are freakier. DC's are more iconic but they often look like people in suits and come out kinda paunchy when Ross' friends model for him. Nobody models for Giant Man, bay-bee. Nobody models for Silver Surfer. The only thing Ross could reference for the Black Knight spraying noxious gas down Madison Avenue was the original Jack Kirby panel.

I can't wait for it to end either. The first 3 issues of the run were great with the cure and all. It's been down hill since the fast-ball special. I like that Scott and Emma really love each other. I like that Scott has gotten over Jean. I like that Kitty and Collossus are shagging. But the whole space thing is just boring. Agent Brand sucks and they are drawing out the return of Cassandra "Armor" Nova just way too much. I am looking forward to seeing Scott explode: remember when the White Queen was psycho-analyzing him and he says "I wonder if I loose control if it will only come out of my eyes"?

Thunderbolts is by far the best of the fallout from Civil War. The picture of the government gone really wrong and off-track. The premise is right on, the characters are great (I even found myself interested in Venom and I thought that was impossible). I can't wait for them to go after Spider-Man.

Psynapse. I'm down with character driven stories, but that doesn't mean characters driving through a dull space plot with the x-man anti-christ is interesting. loved it the first time when it was called "the Phoenix Saga." Just because the guy writes many things well doesn't mean everything that comes out of his brain is golden. JMS is also talented, but he should take at least some of the blame for bleeding all the fun and intelligence out of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. That character is so crippled emotionally that I expect him to cry in every scene.

I really enjoyed the Governor/Woodbury arc which I thought was a great way of escaping the setting of the prison and introducing more tension and drama. I haven't read the latest issue but I think it's clear Kirkman's taking the book in a different direction than most readers might like, ie more human drama, less zombies and creepiness. I think he even said he'd like the book to get to the point where the humans are building houses and never see a zombie, which I can't really see working long-term. Anyway, leaving aside any broader problems I have with the book, for me #40 was a completely unnecessary issue. I think anything that happened there could have been skipped over in favor of a more abrupt opening next issue.

...says the Hulk has never killed, because Bruce Banner's subconscious told him where to hit people so it wouldn't hurt. I say not killing=good, but explanation=over literal and unnecessary. And didn't the Bendis issue that started off this whole World War Hulk thing explicitly say Hulk had killed? Continuity still a mess at Marvel.

Seriously, Y-The Last Man 58, She Hulk 21 and Buffy 7? Why the hell are people not wasting time talking about these on the internet? I mean-Y THE LAST MUTHERFUCKING MAN 58?? Saddest thing BKV's ever done.
SHE-HULK #21 was pretty great.

Wrapped up Dan Slott's run nicely, and I hadn't been enjoying the last few issues. Good stuff.

Still, it seems like he should've drawn it out for another issue. After this, I went and reread the issue 20. So much stuff. But better two issues of crazy loose-end filling than 0ne. They even got a few tender moments and genuine laughs in there. Go Slott.

is not my favorite. morrison's and quitely's was. having said that, i concur with the 'who cares' re: hellfire club, and that cassaday needs to start drawing hank mccoy more like a lion and less like a housecat. at least hank's getting laid, ffs. finally.
