My Grandfather, Roger "Bill" Terry (Google him, he's an incredible man and my hero) use to be president of the Tuskegee Airmen Institute. In fact, under his presidency (in an attempt spark interest for a new generation to understand and respect the efforts, sacrifice and honor of these fine soilders)they were able to get two G.I.Joe commemerative action figures made as well as the HBO TV Film made. Lucas has own the exclusive rights of the Airmen's RED TAILS for 20 years. As far as scripts, well, all I know is that there was ONE script originally written. Personally, this project has been one of great irritance and excitement. A bizarre pairing of emotions I know but bare with me. Consider that when Lucas intitially intended to have this film made to coincide with the 50th Anniversery of the end of WWII. Since then, numerous ILM/THX/video game projects have consumed his "attention"...included six related Star Wars films. It's been frustrating because many of the original Airmen have passed away, never to see this project come to fruition. The excitement is the hope that one day, ONE F'N DAY, he'll come through and make an amazing film that highlights/showcases/honors/re spects the great contributions made. Hell freezing over...nope not yet. But I hear that it will start getting colder in LA soon :^D

I recall reading about this project in 1990. I was still in high school and on the way to an interview for a part time job! I was so excited, as an African American, that a guy with the clou of Lucas would do such a film. For two yars I recall egularly checking ou Variety at the library to see if "Red Tails" was going into production. After that I stoped checking. And after four years I essentially brushed off the idea that this movie was going to be done at all. To read today's report is kind of like learning that a lost and thought to be dead friend has turned up alive in Aruba. Of course now I'm not so excited about this product considering Lucas' recent track record. But I hope it finally goes through and that a good movie is actually made. By the way I ddi get that job.

But more people will be able to learn of the Tuskegee story from a high-budget Lucas-produced movie than a pre-Sopranos-era-HBO Film, no matter how good that HBO Film was. Hell, even if they recycled the cast, it would be a worthwhile effort. By the way, Tuskegee Airmen was one of the finest HBO Films ever, along with Something The Lord Made, Miss Evers' Boys, Citizen X, Barbarians At the Gate...and about 20 other films, of course, that's not even counting minis.

They were already in the last one, which was made for tV, as I remember. This movie should be an ensemble piece, not a star-vehicle. I think with proper marketing and great word of mouth it won't need a "marquee" actor to headline it in order for audiences to come and see it. We need some young lions for these roles. If I were in charge of casting I'd draft half the cast of Stomp the Yard, beginning with the guy who led the Gamma fraternity to play any sort of "lead."

The Rebel Alliance were biased in their recruitment practices. I am sure that Admiral Ackbar commissioned studies proving Africans did not have the requisite skills to pilot an X-Wing. However, Lando did do alright in the Falcon? I am particularly upset because Red Squadron saw no problem with putting a 60 year old to lead them..... and I will not go into detail about the ultra fit Porkins.... Yet the brothers get no love?! I’ve also been waiting for this movie for a while. I was kinda disappointed in the HBO production (although it had its moments). I disagree with the TB’er who suggested an ensemble story. They rarely work well, IMO. They should focus on making a ripping good yarn; that in itself will be much better tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen than a clumsy “look at all the heroes” type paean. And they should park a dump truck full of money in front of Terrence Howard’s house until he agrees to star in this. He’s got the perfect look. (Maybe he could play Robert Freeman, Huey & Riley’s granddad. He was a real guy, right? :-) On a somewhat related note, when are they going to make a Night Witches movie? (They were the Russian women who kicked aerial ass on the Eastern Front.) Scarlett Johanssen was born to play Lily Litvak, the beautiful fighter ace known as “The White Rose of Stalingrad.” Her story was tailor-made for the Hollywood treatment.

Lucas direct another flick. It's definitely the hip thing to bash the flanneled one, but the guy has talent behind the camera. That's right, I said it. Watch THX 1138 or American Graffiti. Two great flicks that are totally different from his Star Wars movies. MoM is definitely on the ball when he talks about Lucas and Star Wars, and though I'm not certain about what he says concerning Raiders (I haven't done any research or anything to tell me it was overwhelmingly Lucas's film), I wouldn't be surprised if Lucas had a much bigger hand in Raiders than most think. I'd really like to see him make the smaller films he said he was interested in going back to, and here's hoping he gets back in the director's chair for Red Tails and more flicks afterward.

No, the whole problem for Lucas with Empire was that Kirshner told him at the outset he WASN'T going to be Lucas' sycophant (like Jedi) and DID do his own thing when it came down to arguments. More than likely why Lucas says it's his least favourite. And definitely why we have "I love you" "I know". As for editing, Lucas may be an editor (look how he treats structure and plot elements), but Burtt is NOT. Sound genius absolutely, but fucking lousy editor with no sense of rhythm. Based on the NT anyway. Grrr. Also MOM, you're smoking something if you think Spielberg was a glorified director for hire on Raiders. And YOU talk about dogmatic disciples!!

George Lucas blows sloppy green chunks. He's a self-important mental midget who's fooled his apologist fans into thinking he's got something important to say. The problem is, he doesn't. I loved "Three Kings," so I've got no problem with John Ridley writing the Tuskegee Airmen story. I just think George Lucas is absolutely the wrong person to direct it. Any movie that requires drama, real emotion, real human beings, subtlety, or a strident historic statement should be slapped out Lucas's fat hands. The man has no clue. People who dig Lucas are ostriches willing to stick their heads in the sand and overlook his childishly bad writing and execution. Which is fine, I suppose. America needs its modern braindead mythologies to give their lives meaning, which I know Lucas has taken advantage of. But he's also a pigheaded opportunist who's buttraped the Star Wars-going public with his faux-Joseph Campbell preachings, cheaply made toys, and badly made movies. If Lucas directs, I'm entirely uninterested in "The Tuskegee Airmen."

Every time someone offers up Lucas as film genius, film visionary, as a film auteur..my gall bladder hurts. Thx1138, love fights the state, yeah, send that check to Eric Blair. The reason many see Empire as the best of the SW films is due to the efforts and abilities of Kershner and Kurtz (coincidentally, the last time he worked with Lucas) not the stupefying hacketry of George. Raiders..Lucas more than Spielberg? That is just universally stupid. Send that check to Steve, so he can use it to polish his solid gold toilets Lucas understands the movie business, especially all things marketing. He is a superior capitalist, there is no denying that. But like about, mmm, 85% of other superior capitalists what he is best at is harnessing and marshaling the skills and talents of others to serve his whims. A good artist copies, a great artist steals. Of course he will router this new/old Red Tail endeavour, too. Except for Anakin's babblings in the cockpit, I'm perfectly content with Episode I. For all the grousing about "bad acting", Neeson, August, and McDiarmid gave three of the most textured performances in the saga. I dug the politics. I loved passage on Tatooine and Coruscant. The dialogue was no worse than anything you'd hear in the OT. All in all, I'd rank it #4--far better than ROTJ and AOTC.

I think your rationalization for Ewan McGregor not liking his role in Star Wars is a bit desperate. Whether or not he was an alcoholic during the filming of the Star Wars films is irrelevant. I'm sure lots of actors look back on certain roles they've played with disdain or embarrassment. Robert Downey Jr. and many others were high as kites most of the time, but their performances continue to resonate for them and others. You need to accept the fact Ewan McGregor just doesn't like his role in Star Wars. No excuses, no rationalizations, he just doesn't. And contrary to your opinion, I think as time goes on Ewan will look less fondly on his Star Wars years. Natalie Portman admitted she doesn't like her role in Star Wars either. Coincidence? I think not.
