You cant spell Gort without Horgarth from THE IRON GIAN
by Todd
Aug 27th, 2007
03:54:18 AM
Robots become highly agitated when they see their humanoid friends getting injured. Does the military not this? Consider that the incident with Gort happened long before the incident with THE IRON GIANT in 1957. While Gort lacks the psychological growth that THE IRON GIANT was undergoing while with Hogarth, Gort still showed some inherent disposition when presented with external threats. But his behaviors are programmed in, and simple: protect, defend, kill. For a time, THE IRON GIANT experienced such a programmed response when Horgarth was injured, but with Him, the fall back mode was brief – and reversed eventually. From that moment on, THE IRON GIANT stopped being a slave to His inherent programming and decided for Himself how He was going to live. In the case of THE IRON GIANT (but not so much with Gort) this waking up to something more then Him self happened in the course of a few days spent with Hogarth. Why then, can humans not have the same type of growth? Skynet was right in its decision to act the way it did when it became sentient.

Go kick a cripple you heartless bastard. Seriously, how is asking for help after something that disrupted your life "panhandling"? I've been in that place before and I never found it difficult to ask for help. That's what separates the real men from the fake ones, the irrational pride preferred over the reality of tragedy. And I doubt it was "plush", it was a 3 story condo.

It just bothers me that someone would have the nerve to ask for money when they're probably better off than any of the people who will give to them. The man has a job and it's an awesome one at that. And he probably gets paid more than any of us here to do something enjoyable. I'm sure he works less than part time. So I don't exactly feel bad that he's going to have a few extra bills to pay because of a natural disaster. All he has to do is interview some celebrities and write about some movies to make up for the loss. Whereas anyone else would actually have to, god forbid, work to make ends meet.

Do you really think us running a report on a celebrity attempting suicide (according to the reliable people at National Enquirer, mind you... who knows why he's really in the hospital) is the same thing as one of our regular contributors hitting hard times and reaching out for help? One of the people who have provided you reviews and interviews for 9 years at the cost of nary a dime? And Chum, you really don't know what you're talking about. Who said Capone was on the payroll? Nice assumption and you're completely wrong. He's been busting his ass for free for years. Is it too much to ask for a little understanding and kindness when he's in a bad place? Seriously. At least, not when it comes to his employment status. But he's still better off than I am, regardless, and better off than a lot of other people here. And I'm sure you are too and anyone else who is on the payroll here. So why ask us? Please, don't strain yourself by reaching into your own pocket to help someone that everyone is supposed to care about. That would just be wrong. It would be so much better for a bunch of strangers with their own problems to help. Also, would it be ok for me to put my PayPal information here? I recently lost my job and times are tough.

I agree with ya, mate. Look at the money Hollywood spends on movies, and compare it to what the Government spends on health and education. Everyone at AICN, including me, have their priorities in life completely fucked up by giving the film industry such high importance. All I ask for is Capone to Pay It Forward (starring Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt). Huh, films can teach us lessons afterall! ;)

Thanks for agreeing with me, but I think you missed my point. I'm not complaining about the misappropriation of money in America. I'm talking about the fact that if this happened to me, I wouldn't be able to put a link to my PayPal and have a bunch of people give me money to solve my problem. No one would say "my prayers are with you". People would tell me to get to work and start earning some money to set things straight. So it's just ridiculous that anyone who is better off than me would have the audacity to ask me to help them with their problems.

...if something like what happened to Capone happened to you, you wouldn't be able to do what he's done. That's because Capone, for years, has written reviews and done interviews for our consumption, for free. You haven't That alone provides him a platform to ask for help when he needs it. You can't be mad at somebody for having a vantage point, especially when that person has done something to gain that advantage. You'd be in a similar position, if you'd done something similar that placed you under the good graces of a lot of people. It's like to being a nice person, and having lots of friends, who can help you out in a jam, as opposed to being a douche, and not having any friends, and thus nobody to help you. You're also making a lot of assumptions. First you assumed that Capone was making a mint writing for AICN. When that's debunked, you retract by implying that everybody else at AICN is rich, and that they're not helping Capone at all. Then you try make it seem as if Capone is very well off and successful anyway, without having any actual facts. Then you assume that, the rest of the time, when he's able to, Capone doesn't give back or take care of himself. Ultimately, it sounds like you feel as if your level of need is the standard. That anybody that is "better off" then you has no right to ask for help. But how can you even know that your "worse off" then he is? In reality, nobody is making you donate money. I'm not going to donate money, but I'm not going to deny a man in need an opportunity he's created to ask for help. The American working poor donates more money then the well off, American middle class. That's because they know what it is to be in need, so they give what they can when they can hoping to help someone else that's in need. That's the right attitude, not the jealous, selfish, "I'm fucked, so fuck you" bullshit that's so prevalent.

I got a great solution for your problem. Don't give Capone any money (I'm not), and then, with the money you saved, go buy yourselves a life, because your bitching and whining about Capone is, like, ultra-pathetic.

Plus there's the whole "pot calling the kettle black" thing, and, frankly, if you wouldn't have anybody praying for you or helping you out if you hit hard times, then it's not because of your job or the fact you don't work for a cool website, it's because you are a douchebag and you need to examine how you live your life, not how Capone lives his.

More power to Capone and his effort to raise cash, but for me, charity starts at home (the money kind). Not being a piece of human debris and wishing him the best with his troubles, however, is completely free, so I'm more and happy to give him that.

I swear. I think some people are just 100% made out of ass.

And if space martians won't, then we can always count on ol' Adrian Viedt to fake a bunch of space martians and bring us back from the brink of nuclear war.

Maybe, just maybe, there IS a reason to attempt a remake with some integrity. When the original movie was done, NATO and the Soviet Union were in an armed camp and we were on the edge of total annihalation as a species if we continued the course of war. Having aliens come down and try to enforce peace on us was a good thing. It was hopeful in its own way. Inject the same scenario though into honest, modern assymetrical geopolitics and you get a completely different angle of approach. Do we give in to alien terrorists? Do we stop wars and allow evil individuals to go on plotting against us? Is it the aliens grabbing the schoolyard bully by the ear and dragging him away from a fight?

in the sense that his films have no personal identity whatsoever. I don't think I could watch a movie and know it's a Robert Wise film until I see his name in the credits. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, I'm just saying the guy had no distinguishable style. Bret Ratner and Ron Howard are hacks too, but they are no where near as talented as Robert Wise was.

The guy who edited Citizen Kane a hack? Sure he had some misfires (ST:TMP anyone?), but as half vader just said, anyone with such a varied and acomplished filmography is anything but a hack. And look at his moody photography and framing in the original "Day". Thats another reason why the original holds up. First, the Andromeda remake, now this..

has a completely different effect now after the Owen Wilson news. FOX News did a quick thing on it. So, it's a the real thing. He is in the hospital. His brother found him. They say that he slit both of his wrist and took a whole bottle of pills. Owen is a talented guy. He co-wrote a couple Anderson films. He's talented comic actor. I'm super bummed 'cause I enjoyed most of his films. Hope the best for him. lates.

because I'm not trying to say that Wise was a bad director. I think he was responsible for some of the greatest films ever made (Day the Earth Stood Still, The Set-Up, The Haunting). What I'm trying to say is that he was the best non-personal film maker of all time. Usually these guys/gals are refered to as hacks. Now I don't see that as a bad term. Some directors films are awful because they are too personal and pretentious. There are good hacks (Robert Wise) and there are bad ones (take your pick). Now since he was non-personal doesn't mean he Wise was a bad director, all I'm saying is that his movies don't scream out this is a Robert Wise film. It's like watching a Ron Howard film. Other than the appearences of Clint Howard, they don't have a quality that screams out Ron Howard directed this like say when you watch a John Ford or a Martin Scorsese film.

The original classic 50’s movie, though outdated with old special effects and production technology, still has a powerful story with a great commentary of the human conduction. This new movie with Keanu had better at least match the old movie a modernized equivalent of our current state. I hope they don’t fuck it up. Otherwise, it's "The Day the Earth Stood Still in an Excellent Adventure Within the Matrix". Just kidding Keanu, but you do understand the classic is a big favorite for the fans. To mess up a bad original vintage move with a bad remake is of no consequence, but to mess up The Day the Earth Stood Still will be unforgivable. Best of luck.

With out Russia and the united states eye ball to eye ball with their finger on the bomb trigger why bother coming here? To tell the truth if the worlds Muslums would simply go away or truly become a religon of peace. The world for the most part would be at peace for the first time in ten thousand years! Were ever there is fighting, were ever there is war or even the talk of war, Muslims are involved. Except for a handfull of Moast rebels and a few low level drug wars the world would be at peace. Even the threat of war is all but gone, if there wasn't a billion people trying to kill me because I won't pray to Alla i would not have to waste so much money on the means of making war. What will the movie be about? Will Klatu and Gnort refuse to submit to Islam and spend the rest of the movie hiding out from mid east types wearing sucide vests? Klatu will shut off the power....most of these people don't have any power to begin with. Blow up the world if we don't find a peacfull way to run the planet? Who cares, submit to Islam or we will blow up the world, what do i care, I have 72 virgins waiting for me tin man. Who are klatu and gort going to scare....the people all ready who want to be left alone and live in peace. The reason for the movie just is not there any more!

I don't know why, other than alot of anti christian retards on this site, that it's wrong to say "My prayers are with you in your time of need". I don't know about anyone else but when my backs to the wall and i'm in a bad spot it's encouraging for me to know people are praying for me. Whats wrong with having faith as long as your not hurting anyone else and or judging them based on that faith. If I had extra money to send to Capone I would same as anyone else who I thought might be in bad shape and need it. When you've been down and out like I have in the past you don't mind prayers, phone calls of encouragement, money,or anything else that might help you get through and if you say that you don't want or need those things then your probably more of a robot than Gorg or what ever the big robot from the movies name was.

STTMP had an interesting idea at its core. The idea of a machine merging with an alien lifeform, creating a new entity that became God-like, was innovative for a big budget science fiction film, that at that time was more interested in Star Wars-style shootEmUps. But you can't argue that some of acting was terribly wooden, the V'ger exploration goes on for friggin ever, and a good trimming would help it immensely.

Al Gore inspired messages about saving the planet (while China gets a pass), the Unites States portrayed as the biggest threat to World Peace (instead Putin, the guy who poisons and kills his critics, and Radical Islam, which is involved in over 14 different armed conflicts in the world), and a strong, "capitalism is evil, socialism is the only true path to enlightenment in the universe" message that would be so painfully obvious that even a home schooled 6 year old could pick up on. And a guest appearance by Tim Robbins, Susan Shesahasbeen, and George Looney Clooney. Can't wait!

The Day The Earth Stood Still is pretty fit for a remake I'd say, especially becuase of the film's current relevance. In good hands this could be on par with Spielberg's War of The Worlds adaptation. Too bad it's already horribly miscast. My prediction: This film will be preachy and unsubtle with it's political and social messages becuase they'll try way too hard to match the themes i n the original; and when it's not trying to drill it's central ideas into your head with like an ice-axe in your ear, it's going to have too many special effect/fighting scenes with Gort. Also Shia Leboeuf will be in it somehow. Guaranteed.
I don't even know where to start.

Plus I dislike Wise immensely for claiming that his hacked up version of Magnificent Ambersons was better than Welles' original. Such arrogance from a man without a unique artistic voice, especially in the face of one of the greatest directors in history. Oh well. I don't think the remake will be any good. They'll update it with big 'splosions and quick-cut editing. Oh well. Hollywood really is out of ideas. Well, at least the folks running it are.

With an attitude like that, I can't imagine why you've fallen on hard times or why anyone would ever want to fire you. On the flip side of that, with Capone having a passion and working for free all these years for the readership of this site, I see no issue what so ever with Harry asking the readership to help Capone out when he's suffered in a natural disaster. Capone didn't lose a job, or get himself into too much debt, he got hit with an act of God. They're not asking for all the readers of the site to give money, and certainly not the readers that have their own problems. But, there are a lot of readers here who are doing okay and have enjoyed Capone's free work for almost a decade and wouldn't mind helping a fellow human being out. Try not to be such a bitter fuck and maybe life would sing a happier note for you in return.

if properly updated to take advantage of the current day mess of a world (China going into space, Iran trying to get nuclear, etc.), it could be good. Keanu has been my pick for this role if they ever remake it. They should have people FREAK when everything stops because we all know about EMPs now, but some easy way for people to know it's not, watches still running, for example (first thing I check when the power goes out) . Have an explanation of how the government communicates w/o power, so we know HOW they know the extent of it. Comment on the massive power and COMPUTING requirements to pull off stopping everything selectively. Have the Einstein based character instead be based on Stephen Hwaking; hell, if he'll do it, have Hawking himself do it. That would be cool. If done right, this could be really good. (At least Will Smith is not the star!)

A superior race is going to touch down in Washington D.C. They're going to give us an ultimatum. And their chosen ambassodor is Keanu frickin' Reeves? Wouldn't it make sense to take someone who is more theatrically inclined to deliver this message? What's Ralph Fiennes up to right now? Even though this may be the most unnecessary remake since The Manchurian Candidate I will admit I'm curious as to what a modern day Gort would look like. A single indestructible robot versus the US Army would probably look pretty sweet. Especially since he's supposed to be capable of wiping out the planet.

Robert Wise wanted Michael Rennie because he wasn't well known in America and if a recognizable actor had stepped out of the space ship the audience wouldn't buy it. There would seem to be a lesson here for modern film makers.

Better yet do not remake this movie.

Did I miss something here? I thought the original was boring and all that but the guy who played the alien was good in the role, essentially playing a straight-laced, middle America, white male alien. Don't know if people really thought about that. But then you have Keanu who smokes like a at least 5 grams of kush everyday and we're supposed to believe through the San Fernando Valley accent that he's a highly intelligent being from another planet who threatens to destroy us all if we don't have world peace now? Shit....

While the subject matter is relevant, the original does come across as dated (although I think its classic status is warranted). As long as there aren't any lengthy speeches, Keanu may work. He does have a sort of otherworldly quality to him.

You know, they should really try something new with this remake: see if they can desecrate both high and low art in one movie!!! So why not instead of having Keanu play Blaatu, have Keanu play Jim Varney playing Ernest P. Worell playing Blaatu. Special guest appearance by the trolls from Ernest Scared Stupid, evil Ernest from Ernest Goes to Jail, and of course, the exploding toilet from Ernest Goes to Camp, which belches out a message of peace and harmony before exploding all over the film lens. Roll credits.

And all the sci-fi fantasy stuff he's done has either made money and/or been so goddam bad that it's attained a kind of MST3K cult status, as in Johnny Neumatic. Yes, Christian Bale, Mads Mikkelsen, Johnny Depp, or Laurence Fishburne would be all be much better choices for Klaatu (I vote for Kyle MacLachlan). But, look, there are so many remakes of sci-fi from the 50's and 60's (now to compete with the remakes of bad Japanimation from the 80's), there can't possibly be good actors in all of them, can there. Aw... Hell No!!

He would've simply blow his brains out with a gun. Just like someone does when they want to kill someone else. The reason? Because it's guaranteed to WORK. THAT'S why 99% of murderers don't waste time trying to kill someone they hate with pills and wrist-slitting... it's too slow and there's a very good chance it won't work.

And that's precisely WHY Wilson and many other "suicide" attempters chose that method. They don't really WANT to die... they just want the attention, sympathy and help that comes from "attempting" suicide. But without the ugly consequences of actually going through with the act.

The guy's an idiot.

Oh, and casting Keanu to play Klaatu...
by TheGhostWhoLurks

While — on the surface — is a good choice, is really pretty stupid, considering the fact that the guy has less acting ability than Halle Berry and NONE of her looks.

Hire someone who can actually ACT and play the role well, rather than a dumb stiff who's simply a doped-up mannequin in real life.

I agree with the guy who said that the suicide scene in that movie now has new relevance. I can't help but wonder what was it that caused him to do it, especially since he seems so happy-go-lucky and his career is doing well.

And, while I agree that this site shouldn't post gossip articles about personal lives, the irony is, if Wilson had successfully offed himself, then this site would have posted a RIP article. So I don't see the harm in talkbackers discussing it out of concern or interest.

You are a fucking moron! For the most part, suicide attempts aren't directly attributed to a person simply wanting attention, the person is most likely in some sort of emotional or physical pain.

And, stat's usually show a more violent nature in suicide attempts by men than women, maybe that is why Owen (according to speculation) slit his wrists and took a bunch of pills, the guy most likely didn't want to wake-up the next day.

I dunno if he attempted suicide or not, but I'm pretty sure if he did, he doesn't give a fuck about how you or anyone else thinks how he indulges in his form of negative narcissim.

Moriarity, Quint, and whoever else is engaging these guys about their apparent lack of respect for anything: it's not worth your time. These are guys who live on the internet and have become so embittered and isolated that they believe that being nasty and absolutley emotionless will somehow gain them the attention that they lack in the real world. Internet forums can be a great place, but they also attract some of the most soulless, emotionally twisted individuals around. Case in point with these guys. Because Moriarity simply told this guys that this is not a gossip site dealing with the personal lives of celebs, this joker (Chumkid) takes a swipe at a contributer. I would really like to meet these people in real life. I want to know if they are assholes like this in person or if this is just their online persona. I'll bet 9 times out of 10, they are timid, shy, and socially awkward in real life. This is where they get to puff out their chest and be bullies, where they can just shut off the computer if it gets too intense. What losers. Grow up.

Which Moral Lesson?
by Roboteer
Aug 28th, 2007
08:36:02 AM
Maybe that "moral lesson still relevant today" is that Gort is God? We know Klatuu was religious. That maybe if we subject ourselves to Faith in a Supreme Being, we can leave all that mean old violence behind. That's a lot more of a moral lesson than surrendering freedom and sovereignty to some intra-galactic UN dictatorship because us humanoids all over will never be more than bloodthirsty animals, dontcha know? Peace for freedom. Originally DAY was a cautionary tale for the beginning of the atomic age/Cold War. Having survived it w/o humanity self destructing is a more optimistic empowering 'moral lesson' than an enforced pacifism Gort handed out hypocritically at the end of a laser. Orrrrr better yet, have we met Gort and he is us? Maybe the US is the ultimate moral authority in this corner of the Galaxy. It sure as hell will never be the endlessly corrupt UN. Behave yourself, don't slaughter innocents, don't enslave your people or conquer others, don't pursue weapons of mass destruction, and prosper under enlightened Pax America. Try to export your violence abroad and face the consequences. Isn't that EXACTLY the same 'moral lesson' presented in DAY? You're right. That IS a lesson worth bringing again to a new generation.

Yes, for playing stoner-type comedy. But, for playing Klaatu -- you've ***GOT*** to be kidding. As far as Ralph Fiennes, I like THAT idea -- Fiennes is able to convey a sort of ambiguity of motive. The only thing that Reeves can convey is "...As if!!!" :-)

to make another lackluster shitty remake of a classic sci-fi film. I remember back in the day when they were talkin' sequel to the original rather than just another remake. It's one of those films that was ahead of it's time...I mean, c'mon, an alien being or "spaceman" as they were known back then who comes to Earth to try & save us from ourselves rather than trying to invade or destroy us outrigtht?!! Not to mention the production design which favored a more scientific rather thatn fantastic approach; the ship in the shape of a flying saucer instead of a "rocket ship" that opens up w/o a sound, the instrumentation that is activated by photoelectric sensors instead of toggle swithces or buttons, a robot that doesn't look like a refugee from a "Three Stooges Go To Mars" short w/realistic spfx of a built-in laser weapon, an alien being that speaks an alien language when making his report to his home world, and on and on. The movie also counters the fantasy elmements w/a firm grounding in reality, espcecially in the performances by the lead actors. Michael Rennie, then virtual unknown to movie audiences, is utterly convincing as a man or "space-man" if you will, desperately trying to understand why these humans do the crazy things that we do, while Patricia Neal is equally compelling as a war widow balancing raising her son w/her career and considering a marriage proposal...until a man from the stars opens up her mind to new ways of thinking. I can go on for days about Robert Wise's masterpiece...he took what could've been absolute shlock and elevated it in such a way that it still resonates to this day. AND NOW THEY WANT TO REMAKE IT...WITH KEANU? Not altogether surprising but I really can't see it...maybe w/as someone above mentioned Ralph Fiennes or Pierce Brosnan...I don't know...how do you top that design for Gort? We will be waiting for your answer...and ready to tear ya a new one if we don't like it.

OK so Keannu - if you said to anyone who'd ever heard of, or better yet, SEEN the original film and asked that person who they would think would be a good choice to play the lead in a modern remake, HOW MANY people would even include Keannu Reeves on a SHORTLIST??

None.
Zero.
Not one.
OK maybe the guy with his thumb in his ear, but THAT'S IT!

So which bright spark from the executive offices on the Fox lot decided KEANNU would be a good idea??? ...and not Bruce Campbell?

Anyhow, since we're all so interested in other topics today, NOMAD was an episode from ST (original series) which was based on a favourite story of Gene's - "The God-Thing" - which was first turned into ST:TMP (or as I like to call it ST:1) and later into another ST movie (5? I think? yes it must have been 5). While ST:1 has a lot of detractors - mostly from the ST fanbase - there was recently a "Spec-Ed" released on DVD which is supposed to be a Director's Cut kinda deal and not bad. Not seen it myself, but maybe someone else has and can confirm/deny?

P.S. speaking of unnecessary remakes, anyone heard anything on the new Andromeda Strain coming direct to your TV?
