Cloverfield article from Dark Horizons
by RokurGepta
Aug 20th, 2007
05:17:31 PM
Dread Central claim to have an inside source on the "Cloverfield/1-18-08" project who has talked a bit about the monster we can expect to see: "It's not Godzilla or Voltron (duh) or even Cthulu; anyone expecting there to be some sort of elaborately detailed backstory may be in for a disappointment. Expect an old-fashioned monster movie retold in a very modern Blair Witch sort of way - but with a twist. You see that giant monster that emerges from the ocean to begin laying waste to New York City ... it didn't come alone. Much of the movie will revolve around the characters fleeing for their lives, not from the big one stomping the city, but from the "raptor-like" smaller versions hunting them down. Word from the start has been that this would not be a mega-budget movie and the digital effects work needed for a giant monster trashing New York City would no doubt cost a heck of a lot more than street level action of people being chased by smaller monsters."

it won't matter in the end for me. Let's say HD-DVD wins. I'm already there, go me. Let's say BLU-RAY wins. It's probably not going to happen for a while, years, I wager. I figure by the time it does, combo players are going to be pretty reasonably priced, so I'll have my 360 add-on for my HD-DVDs, and I'll get a combo player to play those HDDVDs, and play the Blu-Rays I'll have to get. Either way, don't think it's going to be that big a deal.

by kevinwillis.net
Aug 20th, 2007
07:48:33 PM
Blu-Ray Wins, but the stupid fighting is gonna drag it out and there probably will be a hybrid player and at which point, who cares? That are HD DVD scales up in storage and capacity while being backwards compatible (and maybe cross-compatible with Blu-Ray) and the superior to Blu-Ray HD DVD2 format rules, but they may just keep this war going until we either download movies or buy 'em pre-packaged on 25 gb ultra-cheap SD memory.

We just bought an HD capable LCD TV, but the format wars will be won in this house by whichever player ends up less than $90 first, and I'm guessing that's going to be HD DVD. But, natch, I'll want the Blu-Ray recordable DVD in my computer.

One Format to Rule Them All
by kevinwillis.net
Aug 20th, 2007
07:57:05 PM
"But they were, all of them, deceived, for another Format was made. In the land of the fanboy geekiness, in the fires of his loins, the Dark Lord Knowles forged in secret a master Disc, to control all others. And into this Disc he poured his obesity, his malodorousness and his will to dominate all cinema. 'One Format to rule them all.' One by one, the Warring Formats of Middle America fell to the power of the Knowles. But there were some who resisted. A Last Alliance of Geeks and Fanboys marched against the armies of AICN and on the slopes of Harry Knowle's prodigous girth, they fought for the freedom of all unreleased titles, but especially Disney's neglected 'Song of the South'. Victory was near.

But the power of the Harry Disc could not be undone."

Yeah, I'm sorry, I have absolutely no idea where I was going with that. Or why I felt compelled to write it.

If Criterion ever does decide to go hi-def (and I have a feeling it will be years down the road), they'll be going with Blu-Ray if it's still around. Criterion is owned by Disney, who as of now is exclusive to Blu-Ray. While I'm not too happy about this (since I have the 360 HD-DVD add-on), I think Criterion's SD releases have a great picture already.

People who are passionate about HD snap up titles as they become available up to the limit of their monthy budget for films. If there was a sudden glut and every back title hit the market at the same time buyers would be much more selective about their purchasing, they (I) probably wouldn't buy Red Dawn, The Fly and Robocop and would only buy the same ammount of titles as their monthly budget allows.

Yeah, so both formats look great...

...but you know what? Back in the early 80s, when I saw a laserdisc demonstration in a shop, I was completely blown away. Didn't mean shit, though, did it?

The bottom line is that anyone who thinks there's actually going to be a breakthrough hi-def format after this "war" is either delusional or a moron. Whoever "wins" this petty skirmish will appeal to no greater a market than the folks who collected laserdiscs all through the 80s and early 90s.

Sure, a hi-def format WILL eventually sell big, but we're at least ten years away from that, and I guaran-fucking-tee you it won't be either Blu-Ray or HD DVD.

Keep buying regular DVDs and don't sweat it.

by DocPazuzu
Aug 21st, 2007

I’m trying to be patient with you as I find it incomprehensible why you’re supporting one system over the other. Apart from me and others reasoning with you by illustrating with examples from the past, why Joe Sixpack won’t give a shit and with hard facts as to why the world isn’t ready for hi-def DVD yet, there is one other aspect nobody seems to be bringing up, namely how, exactly, do you win a war like this?

Let me explain by way of a question:

What do you think will happen once one format “wins”?

Do you think all the studios backing the losing system will just laugh and shrug and say “my bad” and then pump hundreds of millions of dollars more into converting their product to the winning system? And will this simultaneously occur with the sudden rush to Circuit City by Joe Sixpack and his granny while hollering “Hot damn! The war is finally over! Gimme that hi-def player!” ?

Or will the “losing” studios just sit back a while and watch as the “winning” system slowly dies as it bleeds potential customers who won’t back a universal system for all their favorite movies? Why wouldn’t the “losing” studios then choose to invest in regular DVD releases instead of the “winning” system until a new hi-def system is developed which everyone will get behind and which will have technical advantages that can appeal even to Joe Sixpack?

Here’s the bottom line, folks: as soon as studios started lining up on opposite sides of the hi-def fence, the war was lost. Simply by being so divisive, the war was unwinnable from the get-go – even if the time had been right for the unwashed masses to abandon regular DVD, which it fucking well isn’t.

Try to get it through your heads: Nobody, I mean NOBODY, of consequence gives a shit about either Blu-Ray or HD DVD. They’re dead formats. Give it another ten years and a unified, user-friendly and affordable system will take the world by storm, but until then, DVDs will be alive and well.

The only people getting ripped off are non-PS3 owning Blu-Ray buyers. $500+ players that do the same thing (less actually)than HD-DVD @ $228 and dropping. Funny you mentioned specs cause HD-DVD's were finalized from day one. I'd like to see the faces on people who dropped 5 bills on the 'el cheapo' Sony S300 when the PiP feature on future movies freezes their player up. 300 on HD-DVD is reference level material for audio, video, and extras, all on an 'inferior' 30 gig disc. Blu-Ray is like a 10" dick that can't get hard. Pointless.

and I applaud you for being very reasonable and level-headed compared to earlier threads on this subject where you went fairly ballistic.

Hopefully you can conceed that both formats have had exactly the same support for the same audio and video formats since the start (whether they were actually implemented or not). If you're being objective you have to say that 300 is reference quality on BOTH HD-DVD AND Blu-ray, as it's exactly the same vc-1 transfer. Your dick analogy is a bit misleading now that the Disney titles ARE going over the 30 gig point and most BDs are 50 gig, extras or not, and there's one other reason that EVERYONE on AICN seems to completely ignore every single time this war comes up.

Computers. Easily as important as the movie side, and this is where MS seem to be cutting off their own noses to spite their face (and everyone else I guess). If you're talking about storage, then the layer-for-layer thing becomes incredibly important. And why MS would back HD-DVD considering the data and storage side of things makes no sense (aside from ego) at all. Hey, 50 gigs (yes I know the 200gig ones are coming next year) isn't even enough right now!

Anyway I just wanted to raise that one. I'm not saying for a single second Sony aren't as idiotic as MS/Toshiba, just so we're clear. It just seems shortsighted to support a format that's not 'portable' the same way even the humble CD was all those years ago. Fair?

Still, at this point I wish they'd all just be done with it either way so we can move on, no matter who wins. Maybe then we can get some high-def Criterion goodness!

Is this good or bad news?
