just came home from the bar and have to say, I don't know how Firefly doesn't beat out the Price is Right. I mean, I know Barker kicks Sandler's ass 'n all, but Mal would beat him down in a heartbeat. The Wire at #2 is amazing. Probably the only credence to the list.

...in an absolutely rediculous order for the most part to boot. But then these things always are, so no real surprise there I guess. I mean sure, there's quite a few shows in that list that I personally like, but only a handful that come in anyway close to deserving to be on a best tv shows ever list. And any "best tv shows ever" list that has things like Saved By The Bell, Jackass, The Price Is Right and Fat Albert on it, yet completely lacks shows such as Deadwood, The Prisoner, MASH, Homicide, Hill Street Blues and Rome honestly isn't worth pissing on, or over. At least The Wire got some props for once, but even so, that was ten minutes of my life I'll never get back. Just as well that I don't have a life, or I'd be pissed off about that...

Obviously the Wing should be in there (and in the top ten at that) but where's the love for Futurama, Spaced, the Office (esp. the English version), Deadwood, Veronica Mars, Queer as Folk (only seen the English version), Peep Show, I'm Alan Partridge, Curb, Weird Weekends, the OC (yes, I'm serious), This Lifem Rescue Me, The Shield, Gilmore Girls, Band of Brothers, ER and dare I say it (due to it's relativle newness) but Heroes? And when the hell are we gonna get to see the Preacher HBO tv series because that just aughta be the best thing ever.

jesus fucking christ. lets stroke Joss Whedon's cock enough that he covers his whole Buffyverse with overhyped hack splooge. i know its cool to have a favorite show and whatnot, but to point out even the smallest thing that heralds Buffy as being anything more than mere fodder for teen girls and closest-homo nerds just gets so tiresome after a while. nice strategy though, not mentioning Buffy at all, and just pointing things out on the list to illicit rabid fanboy response. bravo herc. you might be one of the more cunning 13 year old girls i know. oh well, as long as your endless articles of useless information, recycled material from other venues, and ridiculous amounts of shilling for amazon continues to draw in site-hits and ad revenue, then why should Harry care that you contribute nothing of any real significance to this site. by the way, seriously, links to over 60 different dvd items you can conveniently get at Amazon? can you be any more of a tool? i know harry has his occasional dvd review/advertising section, but at least he or someone pretending to be him can take a little bit of time to write up personal notes about the stuff, instead of just posting a couple of image links and a gajillion text links between what tries to be an article and the talkback section. anyways, have fun reading your buffy comics that you and joss can sit and pretend are like that missing last season or whatever, while the rest of us who actually are old enough for pubes go and do something worthwhile, like go see Superbad.

by Captain Hollywood

08:58:28 AM
It's what's NOT there. 2 shows that should have made the list that aren't mentioned: Eerie, Indiana (everyone knows this) The Odyssey - A show that will probably go on forgotten in history and time. Essentially it was The Wizard of Oz - the TV series... but with a few exceptions. It starred a male lead. The action would often take place out in the 'real world'. It was more serious than the Wizard of Oz. Basically this kid goes into a coma following a gets transported to the "Downworld" and set off on a quest to find his father and "Brad", who could be the key in finding his way back home. While the standard nowadays, this was one of the only serialized kids shows at the time. (the other was Ghostwriter- which should have also been on the list) Unfortunately despite being 3 seasons it never reached a satisfying conclusion. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt01 03504/ According to the boards the DVD has just gotten approval and will be released. Hopefully this means new people will discover it and see what they've been missing. What should kept in mind is that the show IS Canadian which could be a reason you may have not seen or heard about it.

How slow a day for you to place a list of tv shows randomly picked and in random order as news. As well as numerous entries that should really be in worse tv shows of all time. Numerous omissions that you would have thought would have been guaranteed top 20. My top twenty 1.Seinfeld 2.E.R (Seasons 1-10) cant believe it was omitted 3.Simpsons (Seasons 1-8) Rest in no particular order X Files (seasons 1-5) 24 (Seasons 1-5) Lost Futurama Frasier Friends Star Trek:The Next Generation Star Trek Deep Space Nine Sopranos South Park The Practice Cheers La Law Taxi Beverley Hills 90210 (Loved it at the time) Prison Break Highlander Off topic has America produced any really dark comedy series along the lines of The UK's league of gentleman

I know many people haven't seen a good % of the shows on most top 50 lists. Maybe they don't have cable or maybe they don't like SciFi or cop shows or they don't understand a particular brand of humor or they just never got around to it etc. But most everyone has seen at least one episode of Saved By The Bell and know who Screech is. Having said that, I wish all copies of that show would be destroyed and every reference to it erased from our memories. The fact that it doesn't come in dead last among a ranking of all shows of all time is a mystery.

Gets shit when he mentions Buffy; gets shit when he doesn't. That aside, it is certainly a crime not to see Homicide:LotS on a lot of these "All Time" lists. That show kicked all sorts of ass.

I'm going to go for a little discretion and not *squee* for the Buffy thing - although giving Angel his own nod instead of lumping his broody ass with Buff wouldn't have been inappropriate - I think everyone agrees on whther or not they love or hate the show, it's cemented it's cult status. And I think we can safely assume that this list was complied by some fairly young people.

Homicide: Life on The Street
by troutpencil
Aug 18th, 2007
02:28:43 PM
Preceded the Wire, and really is better than the Wire, especially the first season. Those assholes even mentioned Homicide in the summary of why they like The Wire. They refer to it as David Simon's show, but I think David Simon is actually part of the reason it turned terrible in the 6th and 7th seasons. It was actually the work mainly of Barry Levinson, Tom Fontana, and the two or three brilliant staff writers they had (James Yoshimura, etc.) And the 9 episodes of the first season, especially the Adena Watson arc with its climax in "Three Men and Adena" is some of the most brilliant, powerful shit ever produced on television. It may be unrivaled, I dunno. It's unrivaled outside of HBO at least. but I swear to god ranking "Buffy" as number 1 and not even including Homicide is a signifier of severe retardation. Also, both Oz and Deadwood are superior to the Wire. And Buffy. Fucking Buffy is a cancerous blight on mankind.

say what you want about The Simpsons in its current form, but during seasons 1-8 it is single handedly the best comedy TV show ever and pathed the way for a sly culture of comedy on TV. Also any list that has crap like Family Guy or Saved by the Bell (yes I know it was a global phenomenon, but seriously!) just does not hold water with me...and Buffy number 1??? FUCK OFF!! Number 1 should go for either Six Feet Under, Sopranos, The Prisoner, The Wire, MASH, The Simpsons or Twin Peaks

Also, I think the Phil Silvers Show is probably the best American sitcom ever. I am surprised no one else mentioned it. Given the lack of quality of the list, I am not surprised that it wasn't there. A smarter, more thoughful, more historically informed, and FAR better-viewed group should produce a list of the top 50 shows.

The omission of this series completely invalidates this lousy list. SILVERS/BILKO is, disputably, the funniest sitcom ever produced. I'm not the most avid TV watcher, but even I can see a ton of holes in the UDO list. Firstly, I really enjoyed Firefly, but how can a show that didn't even get a chance to finish its first season be one of the best of all-time? Seriously, how is All in the Family or I Love Lucy worse than that when they acutally built audiences up over many years?

And with any Top 5, 10 or 100 list is that the criteria for selection is ill definied, if definied at all. Is this based on influence, ratings, or personal preference? This list seems pretty random - I mean can you really rate a game show against a sci fi drama against a variety show hosted by puppets? At the end of the day all these type of lists are meaningless, so there's no need to work yourself up about it, but it would be nice to see a list that thoughtfully layed out its critera first.

It cut them with wire cutters. I picked the episodes I did - and there were better ones - because they were all set ups for the premise of each season.

First season, Buffy grudlingly did what she had to do. She wanted to be the mall shopping, vapid Cali blondie that everyone expected her to be but -oops- she had a responsibility. And that overwhelming responsibility turned into itself. It became a reality check, "I am only sixteen; I don't want to die." It upped her sarcasm level and her cynical nature grew.

Season two, I picked that episode because of the twisted nature of falling in and out of love. The idilyic nature of possiveness being a mistake. Also the episode that Buffy has a clarity moment about Angel; that it is either her or him. It's a "moving on" scenario in the extreme.

Third season was all about self esteem and self loathing. Faith's Faux!Watcher further pushed her on a path of grasping at any affection at all. Jealousy overwhelmed her.

Hey, I love Buffy as much as the next geek, but the greatest television series of all time? Even James Lipton would consider that extreme hyperbole. Some of the shows on this list aren't even GOOD shows. Saved by the Bell? Ren & Stimpy? The original Trek and Six Feet Under weren't there. Numerous recent shows received high spots on a list that represents all of television history. This is sad. And where did this nonsense about Michale Ohare being a bad actor come from. Seems like a random, idiosyncratic criticism or pet peeve. Then shows that while great, only lasted a few episodes are on the list. I'm sorry, but ya gotta have at least 2 seasons to be considered for greatest shows ever. (Sorry Herc: This includes the rather average Wonderfalls). My list would be more like this: 1. Twilight Zone 2. Babylon 5 3. Six Feet Under 4. Star Trek 5. Star Trek TNG 6. The Simpsons 7. South Park 8. Seinfeld 9. Nip/Tuck 10. Cheers 11. Wonder Years 12. Scrubs 13. Colbert Report 14. Daily Show 15. Buffy 16. new Battlestar Galactica 17. Alien Nation 18. Lost 19. Family Guy 20. Alias

21. Batman: TAS 22. Thundercats 23. Gargoyles 24. Dungeons and Dragons 25. I mean, this list they gave us was insulting to good taste. They might as well put Americas Funniest Home Videos on the list.

when discovering these lists. I liked Buffy too, but seasons 5-7 dragged MAJOR ass. Only when combined with the more solid spinoff Angel (as a complete whedonverse) could it be considered as the best show of all time. But I don't believe that kinda *show-fusion* is allowed. Besides, even if you think Buffy is the #1 show of all time....do you really wanna half defend a list that places Saved by The Bell over Seinfeld?! Get real.

buffy at number 1, ok, now I know Buffy has it's fans but seriously, better then the Phil Silvers show, better then I love Lucy, better then the Andy Griffth Show, better then Mr. Ed, better then Cheers, better the NewsRadio, better then Larry Sanders, MASH? I can keep going

and don't accuse me of not watching Buffy, I watched Buffy until the UPN move becasue where I lived at didn't have WB.

and don't give me that "social message" crap, there were episodes of the original Star Trek and My 3 Sons that were more subtle then episodes of Buffy

another thing that pisses me off about Buffy was Joss Wheadon promised us there would not be a "very special episode" of Buffy where she has sex for the first time blah blah blah, then 2nd season BAM! and she had like 18 very special episodes maybe not all Buffy centritic but comeon

and the whole "dark universe" buffy universe was a rip off of Star Trek's Mirrior universe

HOWEVER I did see Once More with Feeling on FX I believe and that episode was amazing and my favorite episode was from the first season with the demon slayer ventrilquests dummy

see they always hinted at stuff like that, a much larger universe of demon and vampire hunters but outside of the Watchers they never really explored it IMHO

and seriously people can you take serious a list that has Saved by the Bell ahead of NewsRadio and other shows...Saved by the Bell should be in the toilet and yes sadly I watched Saved by the Bell

...On what basis? It can't be FX, because any episode of Kolchak from the 70's had better FX than Buffy, even the one with the guy in the lizard suit that looked faker than a Gorn. Writing? C'mon! Acting? Not if you take Gellar's uh... "performance"... into account. No... Buffy obviously cannot be number 1 and this list was obviously concocted by the faggy goth-emo kids who sit behind the cafeteria at some junior high school in, like Des Moine, or some shit.

Now most people here know I preach the Joss gospel, but even I wouldn't put Buffy up there as the best tv show ever. It's definitely in the top 10, but still. These lists are ridiculous because they're comparing genres, time periods, and styles that shouldn't even be on the same list. Seriously, how do you compare a popular 1950s sitcom with a late 1990s fantasy adventure series? You can't. And how the hell do you compare a game show to either one? Hell, you can barely compare Twilight Zone and Buffy, even though they're both fantasy/scifi - and I agree TZ should be tops. Moonlighting would have also been in my top 10, along with Sports Night, X-Files, Firefly, MASH, and I'm sure a bunch more I can't think of.
