Some day. Still, this is ridonkulous news. Underworld movies are the biggest waste of a franchise since Lucas farted out Attack of the Clones. And I want whatever everyone was smoking that made them think Die Hard 4 was awesome. I wanted to punch almost everyone involved in the making of that movie about 15 minutes in. (Not Willis, though. He's still pretty badass).

However I would like it to star Kurt Russell. I'm sorry but this week I watched the original film, Escape from LA, and The Thing. All great films, (yes even LA even though it's fucking silly as hell). Carpenter should make another movie. He's a great visual director. I even love Memoirs of an Invisible Man. That's right. I'm the one. Kurt looks like he's barely aged at all since the early 80's. Why not cast him as Snake? Grindhouse showed he can still be a cool badass. I like Gerard, but why hand over a franchise just because he was in a popular movie.

Yes! and it probably will be. I'm not one of those that immediately discounts a remake, but this is a situation where the original left little room for reinterpretation. Assualt on Precinct 13 worked for me. I have a feeling that the Halloween remake will not, though I'm still interested. Escape from New York is a near perfect movie with the perfect cast that came out at the perfect time. I expect this remake to move in and out of the theaters with quiet speed and have limited success on dvd. But hey, surprise me Wiseman.
Oh. One more thought to ponder on...

Harrison Ford is fairly old now. Some might say too old to play Indiana Jones again. Maybe that's true. But let's pretend they decided not to cast him in the new movie. Just because he's older should we recast the part with a younger actor? People would have screamed bloody murder if they had done that. I urge people to do the same in response to this bullshit Snake movie.

while i do think that Wiseman's nobody special, some people whose hindsight is a bit blinded by the infectious haze of nostalgia should realize a few things. 1) EFNY was never character driven, at all. to assure myself of this, i just watched it. and y'know what? plisskin is established within the first ten minutes, and never changes or really expresses emotions outside of urgency, frustration, and anger. all of the characters in EFNY as it was originally written, are wafer thin with their desires and personalities very clear cut and never altering. a director who understands character REALLY isn't necessary. What is needed is a sense for scope and the ability to keep the audience interested in what is, essentially, a chase movie. 2)DH4, like it or not, was the best of the three die hard sequels, if only for the action sequences. it's lean, to the point, and economic, even if it's inferior in every way to the original. then again, just about every other action movie in the world IS, so it's truly unfair that it needs to stand up to the original. as a stand alone piece it's the best of the other numbered die hards.

yeah, i did forget to say that a PG-13 EFNY doesn't sound good at all... i know, for a fact, that a PG-13 Gears of War will not even be possible, considering the subject matter and what I've read of the script. the tough part of GoW will be the pacing, it has an extremely lengthy and dense first half hour chronicling 'Emergence Day' and then the REST of the movie is the actual plot of GoW

Len Wiseman is uber-hack, anybody who knows anything about filmmaking knows that Live Free or Die Hard was awful. It takes some skill as a director for Die Hard 2 to no longer be the worst Die Hard film. This film is doomed.

as much as I respect your love for "Live free..." where the hell did you witness any sort of "lean, to the point, economic" filmmaking? Was it the SUV rampaging a soon-to-be-blasted power station? The F-35 throwing missiles to poor ol' McClane? The comedy bits of Lethal Weapon 3 peppered all through the script (wel, THAT is economic for sure).

I'm sure a "Live free" afficionado (I mean, a sincere one as I'm sure you are) could come up with better arguments to its defense.

To me this movie is essentially an ugly, unholy remake of DHWAV - the best sequel so far.

The Underworld movies were fun. Not high art, but fun. He knows how to set-up a good action sequence with some pizaz! I think he'd be perfect to direct EFNY...At least with him directing, it'll guarantee that it'll be way more exciting than the original. I said it once and i'll say it again, the problem with John Carpenter is that he has a problem interpreting his own material. He comes up with great ideas and plots, but he seems to have a problem executing them...Now every once in a while he does knock one out of the ballpark, suchas The Thing; In The Mouth of Madness; The made for TV Elvis Biopic w/Kurt Russell, but the rest of his efforts tends to be cold and unemotional.

those werewolf films were Wafer thin dog shit but i really enjoyed Diehard4 because i thought he got a good ballance of action and character in and it was better than 2 & 3. Does Escape need another go round? Well, why not! Carpenter re-did it shockingly shit himself with Escape from LA and doesn't seem to give a fuck who shits on his stuff himself included. I'm no fan of stuff I love like The Long Good Friday and Get Carter being remade, it make my skin crawl but sometimes when I catch one on DVD later just out of interest like The Italian Job or The Thomas Crown Affair it turns out to be an enjoyable if forgettable watch, and Oceans 11 too.

for better or worse: he comes up with stupid concepts ("Romeo and Juliet with Vampires and Lycans"? WTF???) and suffers from self indulgent indolence, where JC creates iconic figures and sly settings and plays it to a minimum like his master John Ford.

bad remakes only strengthen the original and the odds are stacking up that this will be mediocre at best. If Wiseman knocks it out of the park, great, can't wait to see it and despite my love of the original I'd probably enjoy it. If not then I can be all smug and say "told you it was a bad idea" Films that don't need re-making with middle of the road directors are a geek win, win.

No offense, but that's the rationale of the typical fresh out of film school auteur wannabe who's more interested in winning accolades from that elitist film critic Mahnola Dargis. The plot alone screams for balls to the wall excess and action. - That's why I was so disapointed with the original...And the sequel was nothing more than a listless carbon-copy, but crappier. All i'm saying is that there are certain projects that doesn't require alot of overthinking. Can you imagine if Walter Hill would've directed the original as oppose to John Carpenter?

Escape from LA was one of the most disappointed films I've ever seen. Not because it was so horrible; I've definately seen worse films. It's probably because I had such high expectations for it. I loved the trailer (the mock "theater rules" was funny as hell), and I thought you couldn't go wrong with Steve Buscemi, Pam Grier, AND a cameo by Bruce Campbell? Then all we got was a rehash of the first movie with a weaker villain and a horrible basketball scene.

As for the original. Loved it. No, it's not balls to the wall action but I don't think it was ever supposed to be. I don't mind that they're remaking the movie... I really just don't want a glossy pg-13 summer movie version.

let me get this straight: I'm sick of the "less is more" school of thought as much as one can be. To me, less is just FUCKING LESS 9 times out of ten.

BUT the low-budget style of the first movie was maybe a pain in the ass for Carpenter to work with, however it fits the story perfectly. No fancy useless stuff, just lean, mean action and badassness. Besides as much as I can understand that you disliked the movie, it was essentially a low budget early 80's flick, what did you expect?

As for Walter Hill, he's not interested in Sci-Fi and passed on directing Alien precisely because of its genre. I haven't seen Supernova yet. Anyway, Hill at the helm wouldn't change the futuristic setting, and honestly between The Warriors' school of badassness and EFNY's, I couldn't choose one but I'm perfectly fine with Carpenter's. And concerning EFLA, it is maybe sucky at times but it was damn fun on some parts and the ending is a perfect example of what a guy like WiseRat couldn't even dream of: a balanced mix between minimalist setting, political boldness and unusual yet fair use of CGI and H'wood style for maximum impact. I don't love the movie that much but the ending is just genius (and a tasty middle finger to the braindead execs while ID4 was ruling the BO)

Now, to me Wiseman on board is like Star Wars Special Edition: you could just edit the original with state-of-the-art CGI it would be the same. The guy couldn't show some cinematic balls to save his life, will (judging by its past efforts) confuse scope with style and ultimately is a soulless yes-man.

But I must admit, his fucking blue filters will do fine on the movie.

I forgot...

WRONG WRONG WRONG - this can't be good. It might be fun and stupid, but the original is a damn fine film. Its a lean, mean statement on the social nature of the time (humourous considering it was written the previous decade), and Snake is a tremendous character. He's played by Kurt Russell with zero redeeming factors, just a guy out for his own survival. Which works because he's put into a situation where he has to work with people he hates. Mark my words, when they remake this Snake will be given redeeming features so Butler can get a chance to 'act.'

Paul Giamatti (with his flawless scottish accent) shines as the "Count of New York" while Simon Pegg adds some FUN as "Brain", the tech-geek sidekick. Bridget Moynahan is the president's (Warwick Davis) daughter who provides food and emotional support to "Snake" on the battlefield.

Oh yeah the original was all about character ... Why oh why wasn't Russell nominated for an Oscar? The bravery he showed, the vulnerability ... Not since Last Tango in Paris has an actor bared his soul like that on screen.

Even without the delicate and introspective John Carpenter at the helm, maybe there's hope for this movie in Gerard Butler. His nuanced emoting in 300 have set him up to be the perfect heir to Russell's revealing turn as the complex Snake Plisskin.

But I think Carpenter's version of The Thing is overrated. I like it - I think the performances are great and the sense of dread and paranoia are palpable. But the gross out effects for the most part stop the film in its tracks, and haven't aged well (particularly that spider head). I think even Carpenter's best films suffer from an over all veneer of cheapness. EFNY is a great idea, but merely a mildly entertaining, trashy film. So I don't necessarily mind the idea of a remake, although I'm not sure what this guy will do with it.

...was over a looooong time ago. Sure, he made some classics ("Halloween", "Assault on Precinct 13") but peaked with "The Thing" (just watched it again, and it still holds up and TOTALLY cries out for a sequel with global warming thawing that beastie out). But even EFNY was "Eh" back in the day (yes, I saw it in the theaters in college with a whole buncha geek pals, and we all agreed -- great premise, so-so execution -- could been much more kick-ass than it was). And I know there's a whole lotta geek love on this site for "Big Trouble in Little China" which I watched for the first time this summer - wow, is that AWFUL. Maybe if you saw it when you were 12 it seemed cool, but man, it's bad in the cold light of day. And "Vampires" -- meh. (And I hate to slam Mori, but "Cigarette Burns" was pretty weak.) Saw the first "Underworld" and thought it was pretty dopey -- but had lots of nice eye candy. And hey, I had fun at "Die Hard 4", what can I say? So I'm open to Wiseman, willing to give him the benefit of the doubt (and yes, whoever said it could be work with Mark Steven Johnson, Tim Story, etc. was right on the money). But this idea that Carpenter could do this - he had that chance with the ludicrously bad "Escape from L.A."

To defend Die Hard 4....

Aug 15th, 2007
10:10:46 AM
Hey it wasn't a terrible film. But it wasn't really a Die Hard movie either. But as far as big budget PG13 action films are concerned, the movie was a fun film. In all honesty, what else could have been done with the Die Hard franchise? It could have been a piece of crap like T3 but it wasn't.

Funny thing, I remember T3 was rated R, yet DH4 had more violence.

Do I like Wiseman? Not really. I hated Underworld and never bothered with Part 2. But to compare him to Anderson? A man who was given so many chances and has never knocked one out the park? A man who single-handedly ruined Resident Evil? That's going overboard. AvP was the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen. It was an unwanted sequel that tainted what was great about both franchises.

With DH4, it got a lot of kids (like my little brother, who enjoyed the latest installment) to go out and buy/rent the originals.

Are there better directors out there to remake Escape From New York? Yeah. But this is what we got to work with here. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the original film's pacing is slow and it could benefit from an entra jolt of adrenaline.

And at least the film is being made by a director who is capable at directing action, and framing it all in a way where you can see everything going on on screen. Not like other directors who film action sequences as if the action exploded in your face and you don't know what the fuck is going on half of the time.

With the right cast and script, this movie will turn out fine in Wiseman's hands.

I'm sorry but the Resident Evil remake for the Game Cube was more exciting than the movie. I don't get it. If he wanted to make a completely different film that differed greatly from the storyline of the game, he should have just made an original film. Again I hated Underworld and never even saw part 2. Prince of Darkness has a really good premise, but the film is a mess at certain points. But the thought of the Devil being an Alien was interesting, and instead of making more sequels to the Exorcist or remaking The Omen, they should remake Prince of Darkness. The Thing needs a sequel ASAP. Christine needs to be left alone. And They Live could be a good remake, but Armand Van Helden already did a superior remake with his video to his song "Into Your Eyes". If you haven't seen that video YouTube it ASAP. Also in non-Carpenter related remakes, they should remake The Running Man.

Die Hard is a franchise that appeals to a mainstream audience. This is why the studio was able to sell it as a PG-13 film, even as fanboys were desperately screaming for everyone to boycott it. But EFNY doesn't carry a great deal of mainstream appeal. In fact, the majority of people who are interested in another Escape would rather see Kurt Russell returning ala Indy or Rambo.
