They *WEREN'T* shaking people down at all. They had some tools in suits who THOUGHT they were intimidating walking up and down the aisles looking for phones and cameras and confiscating them if they saw one. DC had spent the better part of two days telling us we couldn't bring any kind of electronic device into the screening and I think that made most people think they were going to be frisked at the door so while it's possible someone taped this, I doubt it. It was also pretty dark and I doubt it would show up too well on video. This is the second time they've done this at the Chicago Comicon (screw Wizard!) so when part 3 starts filming, if they're in Chicago at the time the convention is happening, you can probably bet they'll do it again.

Yeah, okay, they weren't frisking anyone, but I still doubt anyone got any footage. Also, authority figures make me nervous, like when a cop is driving behind you, and you suddenly feel guilty. Like, "Oh, shit I am going to get pulled over!" even if you haven't done anything wrong. They kept mean mugging and I was like, "Oh, man, they're going to plant a cellphone on me, and take me out back!"

this was my first ever con and I only went for the day - Of course I found out about the wristbands too late, and there was no way to get them. But my stepson and I accidentally opened another door to the large room where they holding the panel, since we were looking for an adjacent room. And no one stopped us. Maybe they would have eventually noticed us sitting down without armbands, but we totally could have gotten in. But I didn't want to be a dick to the people who had waited in line all that time. But when I found out that the actors were there and everything, I kinda wished I did. I really want to see that damn footage. Oh well, I got to meet Richard Hatch and see his lame Battlestar sequel trailer from 9 years ago. He's a pretty nice guy, though.

Hey listen. I'm not a political correctness freak, but I have to take offense to your lead in this story. I live near Hickory & Morganton, NC and you should know that I've never seen any hillbilly sodomists around, although we do have Starbucks in the area, as well as electricity, iPods, and, by the way, I'm typing this to you on broadband. The proliferation of cheap shots like yours, as well as reruns of the "Dukes of Hazzard" and "Hee Haw" do nothing but drag down the image of the progressive Southern U.S that I know. I realize comments like yours are just cheap shots coming from lazy minds but it does feed stereotypes. As a plus-size guy I'm guessing you're also familiar with uncomfortable comments and low-blows. BTW, forget "Deliverance". For a movie that captures the civility and charm of small-town Southern life I refer you to "Doc Hollywood". Although no one I know has ever paid their medical bills with a pig, it does get a lot right Southerners. Oh, and one more thing, we were shoes in the South nowadays, too. Dumbass.

Most practical? The most practical suit was in batman begins and the best was in batman returns. Actually the best was in batman dead end, but as far as the features go batman begins had a simple suit which resembled frank millers imagining. And the look of these movies (except for some of what I've seen in dark knight-such as that batcycle and the new suit) are openly influenced by millers stuff, year one specificaly. Look at gary oldman for example.

Minutes ago, the capacity crowd at Wizard World Chicago was treated to the first look at “The Dark Knight” – the much anticipated sequel to fan favorite “Batman Begins.” With actors Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart on hand along with Nolan and screenwriters Jonah Nolan and David Goyer, DC Publisher Paul Levitz led the crowd through a spirited and secretive Q&A before getting to a sneak peek at the Dark Knight’s most recent on-screen battle with his arch nemesis, The Joker.

Fans were only allowed to see it once, and while it might be some time before the footage will be released to theaters across America, Wizard Universe was on hand to witness the action and give a full report. The footage started with a silhouette of a dark figure in front of one of Batman’s armored vehicles before quickly cutting to Bruce Wayne and Alfred delivering the brief lines heard in the “Dark Knight” teaser trailer.

“Some people just want to watch the world burn,” advises Alfred before the camera jumps to Batman in action on the Batpod, the new iteration of his motorcycle.

The action built up as the Joker was seen in full for the first time with a mess of white face, smeared red lipstick and sweaty, straggly green hair. Apparently, the clown prince of crime gets arrested at one point in the film, as the montage presented Jim Gordon (complete in SWAT gear) at the Joker’s booking, saying, "no prints, no ID, custom clothes, no tags.” The clown smiles with what appears to be blood over his face from the inside of an interrogation room.

Checking back in with Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy has a brief scene with Eckhart’s Harvey Dent where he says “Rachel’s told me everything about you.”

“I truly hope not,” responds Wayne.

The footage sped up at that point into an intense montage of action, featuring the following clips: The new batsuit rising up from a trap door in the ground and held in a chain metal case.

- Rachel Dawes (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal) close to an unidentified man either kissing him or being threatened by him as the camera rotates around them.

- The Joker and Batman battling in close quarters (possibly a hospital room). Batman throws Joker over a table and crashing into the ground while the clown smiles at him. It should be noted that the Joker was done up in his signature purple suit.

- Plenty of big, bold Batmobile action including a shot where the tank-like car drives through a wall of flame. In fact, flames were pretty much everywhere in the footage as it appears Joker does actually make the world burn.

- There is also a shot of a somewhat grim-faced Joker walking across a city street mercilessly firing a machine gun as well as a television close-up of the Joker laughing hysterically.

- Two major additions to the speculation that Two Face will appear in the film came in the form of a single shot of a spinning 50 cent piece and the final image: after the action montage has slowed down, the camera cuts to a bartender looking at Harvey Dent, whose only onscreen presence is his left shoulder and a bit of a reddish-purple scarred neck. “Dent! I thought you were dead!” the man gasps, to which Harvey replies, “Half.”

I've always had problems believing a ninja would be as effective under like 40 pounds of polyurithane. I think the new suit looks armored, but has a lot more freedom of movement, with his new cowl, he'll honestly be able to turn his head all willy-nilly! I think the costume, while iconing as all get out, is one of the weaker aspects of the original Tim Burton movie, and instead of reinventing the wheel, like I think they should be doing, they keep reinventing a square wheel. It's a new costume every movie, but it's always a big black rubber costume.

Hopefully we can get away with the added heat from both Joker and Two-Face. Nolan did it with Falcone, Scarecrow, and Ra's Al Ghul, so I don't foresee failure.

But still... it's JOKER and TWO-FACE. These guys are iconic Batman villains. First Tier. Scarecrow and Ra's are Second, with Falcone in the Third Tier.

Good luck, Nolan...

Batman has no superpowers, so wheoever portrays him must be a top notch fighter and believable as such. The smirking wuss Christian Bale would get his ass kicked in any real street fight -- batsuit or no batsuit. That's why his Batman is so unrealistic. I can't believe him as a fighter since he has no fight skills whatsoever. "Protection for them!" was the most laughable line I've ever seen uttered in a movie.
Batman Begins Batman not a Superhero
by jimbojones123

It's a Tragic story. In fact Batman is turning into the anti-superhero more and more.

Pre-Crisis IMACs or whatever they were called.

Cadmas Arc on JLU. Bats is no Superhero.

It's amazing, but Batman Begins is exactly what Daredevil tried to do but failed so horribly at. I love the fact that Batman can be knocked out for three days than busts into a party with 2 girls on his elbows "undercover" within a few hours.

A Superhero no, but a challenge to what human potential has to offer -- YES!!

Just no Batskates.

Hugh Jackman isn't a believable Wolverine because he can't actually regenerate and slice people with claws.

Tobey McGuire isn't a believable Spider-man because he can't shoot webs out of his wrists.

You're correct - DELIVERANCE was not shot in Hickory, NC... but then, I didn't say it was. I said, I was traveling at 85 mph - between Hickory and Morganton, NC heading into DELIVERANCE territory.

Now - DELIVERANCE territory is 166 miles from there - 2 hours at the speed we were traveling. And in my book - when you're about 2 hours away from a location - it's ok to say "I'm heading into..."

As for your BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN / Austin - metaphor... well - Most of the locations in Brokeback were shot in Alberta, Canada - approximately 2076 miles from Austin, which at 85 mph would be approximately 24 hours and 42 minutes - not counting bathroom breaks or sleep breaks... but if you were driving through Austin in your pursuit of a gay cowboy in Alberta... I presume it'd be ok to say - "I'm between Austin and San Antonio heading into BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN territory" - since you're not saying you're there, merely heading there. BUT you'd be stretching the metaphor a helluvalot more than me.

BATMAN GOING TO FAIL
by filmgenius
Aug 12th, 2007
01:12:30 AM
anyone who was bestowed to watch the first BATMAN BEGINS movie will be aware of its inaccuracies to the comic book. i'm sure none of you know that batman was acually created by a man named frank miller who is a comic book maker. in the actual comics, there is also a character entitled, ROBIN whom of which exists not even a single mention in the film. i personally feel comic books are a medium unto their own in which film has no intrinsic value and seeing as though BATMAN is a silly rip of off the classical film noir movies of the 70's and 80's such as WHITE HEAT and DOUBLE INDEMNITY (which i'm sure you have never heard of because you are a bunch of uneducated swiners), it is an absurd concept unto itself and therefore will intrinsically fail in its intrinsic nature. what do your guys's thikn?
Routh and McGuire are believeable. Bale is not.
by cyclo
Aug 12th, 2007
01:13:21 AM
The Superman and Spider-man characters have superpowers, so even if wimp actors like Routh and McGuire play those roles, it's still believable cinematically due to the superpowers inherent to each character. On the other hand, Batman HAS NO SUPERPOWERS WHATSOEVER, which means Bruce Wayne must be a great fighter (not a UFC clown, but a smart guy who looks the part of Bruce Wayne and has the fight skills to make himself believable as Batman). Face it, BALE IS A FUCKING WIMP. Anyone who believes Bale could take on 5 thugs at once and win is a FUCKING RETARD. I could suspend disbelief if the Batman character had superpowers, but Batman is just a regular human. Therefore, a natural wuss like Christian Bale, who has approximately the same level of fighting ability as Michael J. Fox, was an incredibly poor choice.

I think you are an intrinsic funny dickhead. I love double indemnity, one part is unintentionally funny that was converted into a van damme parody scene. But I prefer the Begins Batman to the comic batman anyway. Wait a minute double indemnity was an old Wilder film, not 70's and 80's. how old are you? are you in an age of which in you are even supposed to be liking comic books...i mean, come on, they're for childsplay. film is a medium in which is sincere...film scholars around the world agree that films are a stage for filmmakers to be letting out of their emotion on. transforming comic books to the film screen is an terrible misconception to the badness and perserversion of film in itself. film is serious...comic books are for 6 months year olds. get a grip and respect the medium of film.

Me and my wife have been looking for our phones since we got back from the convention. We left them and any other electronics considered contraband in our room. We just found them in a backpack, that we brought to the panel, inside we found two cellphones and an mp3 player, all considered contraband. We didn't record anything, I just find that kind of amusing, that we inadvertantly broke the hell out of that rule.

daddy daycamp, while not of within the league of antonellonili or FILENE, was of infiniteness a better idea than batman. not only was it an better idea, it was a more smart idea. daddy daycamp taps into the difficultness with raising kids. it taps into a many great number of deals of emotionalness from the director of the film. what does batman do? runs around in a cape and a pair of undies with points on his head...nothing in depthful or or containing meaningfulness. what does batman teach he who has become to watch the movie about life? I dont think it would work to be honest. I think The Penguin could work. Only to the point of him being realistc. Not a half man half fucked up hybrid. I kind of liked the idea that some geek said somwere, that Penguin was going to be a European arms dealer or somthing like that. Even though it was full of shit I think it would fit right in to Nolans realistic take/vision. Then again I think Nolan has been quoted somewhere saying that the Penguin wouldnt fit into the realistic world he has created. But I like to think that he could if he was done right. anyway its going to be about TwoFace for the most part but I think they should ease a new villan in at some point like the Riddler or Penquin. Catwoman? seriously I cant see her fitting in Nolans universe.....no matter how fucking hot she is or could be.

The central villain was Ra's Al Ghul - who is far less well known than Two Face. Take a pill. Nolan is crafting his own world/interpretation of Batman. Yes, Joker, awesome, but don't write of an interpretation of a character you haven't even seen yet.

Joker may be iconic yes, but Harvey Dent is more human. I think any stories involving Harvey Dent would be awesome. by The Mastermime

05:07:01 AM
The Joker and Two Face are very similar characters but there is a big difference between them! 1) Harvey and joker both had crap dumped on them emotionally and physically to spark their transformations. 2) Both are psychotic. 3) Both really only commit crimes to gain the attention of the Batman. But even tho I've just made you all go wow there pretty much the same character I will now prove y Twoface is better! Harvey Dent was framed, he was Batmans friend and he can be saved! he is not the jibbering loon that the joker is and with two face theres always the glimmer of hope he might come back! He is the Vader of the DC universe. So from a strictly film making P.O.V. I can see three being the better film because if its done right the exchanges between Wayne/Dent will be dynamite! Oh and before I forget Filmgenius, Batman was created by Bob Kane Jack ass! And Robin didnt really make an apperance till the 70's, he wasn't an original line up character. As soon as you start saying "this can be film" and "this can't be film" it is you who is truly limited in perception. I dont know what shitty film school you went to, but they poisoned you. I remember watching everything from Marcel Carne and Cocteau to Groundhog Day and old black and white Mickey Mouse cartoons in my film classes. Why such a range? Because the professors understood that film can be savored, deconstructed and appreciated on countless levels and in countless forms. Any one who says "film can't (fill in the blank)" and "film should be (fill in the blank)" is a detriment to the world of cinema, and really to the world of independent thought. No limits- bottom line. Either everything has artistic potential, or some schmuck is trying to force his ideas on everyone by setting parameters of what should and should not be. To hell with that!

The article on chud expressed the same feelings I have, is that Batman Begins managed to capture the tone and charcater of Batman, the majority of the post 70's comics and graphic novels. Sorry to break it to ya man, but Robin was not introduced in the 70s. Actually, the very first appearance of Robin was in Batman #1, which to my knowledge, was waaay before the 70s. And as for Two-face and Joker being similar? Well, they're similar in that yeah, they're both a little nuts, but that's about it. Joker is *the* anti-thesis to everything Batman is, and there is no bringing the man behind the smile back. Two-face, on the other hand, can be and has been rehabilitated back into normal life. He's still got some humanity left in him, and while Joker is pure chaos, Two-face at least has some sort of method to his madness: duality. He's governed by the flip of a coin. /Bat-geek off But whether or not it'll play out that way remains to be seen. Either way, this movie can't get here fast enough, and news like this just adds to the anticipation.

While that may have sounded like I was a Harvey sympathizer, I too agree that Two-Face should not be given precedence over the Joker. Bat-villains may come and go but at the end of the day it always has and always will be the Joker that gets the Bat's tights in the biggest bunch.

I am wondering, if offered a range of concepts for a film version of the character Batman, is Nolan's version the one you would select? It seems like Nolan came close as their is obvious support for this show coming up and for Begins. Or is this a form of complacency on the part of all you homemade critics, who will accept anything that the studios dish out. Why does being a "dark" film appeal so much to the modern aesthete? Anyway, for me, I saw it as a somewhat dull film with clumsily edited and staged action/fight scenes and this puzzling commitment to appearing morose on all the cast's part, as if that is "dark." And why was the whole movie shot through a piss and shit lens? Is the Dark Knight going to be blue? What a concept...

Look at the 4th season of Batman TAS. Penquin looked more human and was portrayed as a fence/maven with a natty fashion sense. Catwoman = skilled catburgler with a knack for finding trouble, moral ambiguity and a wicked costume. Bane = pro wrestler & steroid/human growth hormone monster turned assassin. The Riddler = a crimelord with a penchent for games of cat & mouse. Mr Freeze = science experiment run amok but not completley impossible with what we know about quantum physics and dna manipulation.

It's just kind of short sighted to think that size is the only way to decide if someone can beat someone else. First, as people have said, Bale actually is a sort of pumped up guy. But someone being faster, being trained in how to fight, and being kinda crazy can always have a chance to beat some big guy. Whan Bats fights a bunch of people, they're usually, slow, dumb, clumsy thugs.

If you think Rhas is a second tier villain then you don't know you're Batman. Joker might be the most recognizable but in terms of telling good stories with a lasting impact, Rhas is where it's at. Joker's just a 1 dimensional psychotic killer. Not much you can do with him really.

The Best Comments/Questions from the panel

Someone already mentioned the fool who asked what casting agency Nolan used so he could try to be an extra on the film. Levitz took the stage and made a comment about how proud DC was of their most recent film output and listed Batman Begins, Superman Returns, History of Violence, Constantine, and V For Vendetta as their most recent films. Someone from the audience shouted out Catwoman which got a little rise out of the crowd and got Levitz to admit that the film sucked. Someone also asked if anyone on the panel would be interested in working on a World's Finest movie and they all enthusiastically said no. Bale never got a chance to answer but Goyer, Nolan, and Levitz all displayed very little interest in the idea.

I am a child of the 90's: my Batman came in the form of The Animated Series.

But yes, I do have to agree that Ra's is one of my favorite villains, PRE-Begins. The idea of him supposedly living forever, and that he was one of the few Villains that knew Bruce Wayne, is an awesome concept. Also, there are the stories involving Talia...

Ra's does deserve 1st Tier, but those spots are taken by Joker, Riddler, Penguin, and several more. These are the ICONIC Batman villains. Ra's is often forgotten.

Yes, I stand by saying that Ra's is a second tier.

This is the footage we Need, Want and Deserve.

Someone mentioned someone saying this. Whoever originally said that doesn't know jack or shit about Batman and his Rogue's Gallery. Ra's is one of the top villains and always has been since his creation. He's the only one who knows Bat's true identity, and his schemes always involve him trying to kill billions of people at a time. Also, the way they pronounced his name in Batman Begins is wrong. It isn't Roz all gool. It's raish all gool. They even made a little joke about this in the Batman Beyond episode where Terry McGinnis calls him Roz instead of Raish. Talia corrects him and says it's a common mistake. It is and always has been Raish (like Raid with an "sh" on the end instead of a "d").

Keaton wore his pain on his face. You hardly ever saw him smile and when he wasn't talking to anyone he was in the Batcave brooding over his parents. To me, he just seemed darker and more realistic. Plus I think his voice was better suited to Batman than Bale. However, I do think both movies have their merits and do a great job but I prefer the Tim Burton movies.

Certainly Clayface or Mr. Freeze wouldn't work in a Chris Nolan Batman film. But I think this current series will last for quite a while, much in the same way James Bond has over the years. It's very likely that by like the sixth or tenth Batman film, when Bale and Nolan aren't involved anymore, the series will have changed enough so that a character like Killer Croc or Mr Freeze would be used, which will be fine by me as long as they don't have Tim Story directing (he would bring in Bat-Mite). Robin will likely show up too, but I predict not until movie 5 or 6. One of the things I like about the series (since 'Begins') so far is that they are not killing off every villian. I doubt they will kill the Joker (they would be insane to). Scarecrow is back in 'Dark Knight'. Even Falconi could make a return at some point. The Batman Nolanverse won't be short on "realistic" villians throughout its three or four film series.

by cyclo
Aug 12th, 2007
02:18:29 PM
Camera tricks can usually make non-fighters look like fighters. But even camera tricks COULD NOT make Christian Bale look like a skilled fighter in BB. Remember, the prison fight scene in Tibet? Was that some fucking joke or what? I repeat, "Protection for them!" was the most laughable line I've ever heard in a movie. The guy displays no fight skills yet takes on 6 thugs at once and win. Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME? Would you also believe Michael J. Fox could take on 6 thugs at once and win? You have to be FUCKING RETARDED to believe Bale in the part. While a good actor, he is simply not believable in the role of Batman. I also don't think his wearing a constant smirk/smart-ass grin on his face makes for the best Bruce Wayne either. Not to mention he's undersized for the part at 5'11" tops. Remember how Alfred and Lucious Fox towered over him? Bale was a fucking dwarf compared to Alfred!

The problem I have with the Joker is that he often loses his appeal, I mean the guy is a sick fuck thats for sure, but he has little else going for him. Two Face as I have already said is a better character, he has more depth, like catwoman. Personally I would love to see Nolan turn Batman 3 into the long halloween, I would die an insanely happy man if that was the case, but probably it will end up some tweeniecentric holywood raped money maker, not an exceptionally written detective story. If that is the case then it was fun while it lasted P.S. I would love to see a Worlds Finest Film

I was there. And Harvey Dent's reaction to the question "I thought you were dead" was "Only Half". It made it more comical than anything. " Also, during the footage it looked as if the batmoble had it's back end exploded while in the air. It could have been just a really large boost, but they followed it up with scenes of Batman riding his new Motorcycle. One also cool thing to note. Gary Olman confirmed that he is the commissioner and that he has had a few scenes with Heath Ledger and said that his performance is brilliant".

I read the Chud article as well, and while I see what he means, I disagree for the following reasons: 1. Mood and cast is a lot, but it isn't everything. A bad third act can ruin an otherwise good movie. Both X-Men and Batman Begins have excellent casts, and really wonderfully strong openings, but the third act crumbles. 2. Everything in Batman MOTP worked with very few issues- voice acting, animation, plot, direction- everything was great. No overt problems, wheras BB has some major issues. 3. Personally- and keep in mind this all has to do with prefrence- Batman only ever works for me two ways. First, as something anachronistic- something that takes place in either some kind of weird retro styled world (like BTAS), or as a complete lunatic (like in Dark Knight Returns). The whole premise of Batman doesn't make sense any other way, and trying to do him "serious" and "realistic" doesn't make a damn lick of sense. 4. Another personal gripe: The female interest was an irritant, and was completely un needed. Every fucking Bat-movie in existence has a love angle, and while it works out just fine in Phantasm, it sputters and chokes Begins. Remove the romance angle, and change her character to Harvey Dent, and it would have improved the movie by 80%, and made a wonderful set up for Two Face (my favorite bat-villain, by the way), creating a strong emotional resonance when they fight.
And messi-

- though there was little action in Mask of the Phantasm, and even less of it was spectacular, you could at least tell what the bleeding hell was going on. "Shaky cam" literally translates into "shitty choreography"- I get that it's supposed to draw you in closer to the action and "make you feel like you're there," it only works out that way in rare situations. Batman is about action- let's actually SEE a fight scene. Again, a personal qualm.

'they' (meaning the guys in the room) always junk stuff up with the romance angle because they're trying to pull in a female demographic. but you know - i think the latest bourne is showing that dragging things down with 'romance' is not necessary anymore. there's approximately 15 seconds of 'did they used to do it?' in that movie and then on with the show, and i don't think any less women are flocking to see it because of that. we want to see a smart action film as much as the next guy.

Jolene Blalock as Catwoman
by thevision
Aug 12th, 2007
05:08:00 PM
Jolene wears a mask in a scene in "Slow Burn" and I thought she'd make a great Catwoman. Angelina Jolie is the dream choice but she's already playing the Catwoman-like Fox in "Wanted," I doubt Ms. Jolie would play essentially the same character twice. Jolene Blalock looks like Angelina, according to imdb, they were born four months apart in 1975. They had the same makeup artist for "A Mighty Heart" and "Slow Burn." Megan Fox is heart-stopping but she's too young; Selina Kyle is not Barbara Gordon, she is Batman's equal and is not intimidated by him, I like the fact she gets under his skin in the comics. If WB goes young, Selina would be just another sidekick and not the clever experienced thief- CatWOMAN not CatGIRL. Jolene Blalock is a year younger than Bale and she could easily pull off the "slap and tickle" dialogue with Bats. The best rendition of Catwoman is Jim Lee's BATMAN HUSH, the cat goggles are cool- Jolene Blalock in that outfit...OMG!!

- love interest was mandated by WB. had to have a love story. - choreography was meant to show how Batman comes out of nowhere, is quick and brutal. I think it worked fine, the problem was cutting away to another area. Fighting ninjas it cut away to Gordon in the Tumbler. Fighting Ra's it cut to ... Gordon in the Tumbler. Rather than feeling like a continuous scene, it was like a montage. Also, the fact that there were time gaps between shots. That sped things up far more than they should have been. Batman kicks Ra's then tackles him, but he's moved five feet between shots that span a couple seconds. that was the biggest problem. it wasn't so much the cuts, but it was the second or two missing between those cuts that made them unrealistically quick.

First of all, film genius, you're just plain ignorant. Batman was created by Mr. Bob Kane in 1939. Since you couldn't be bothered in looking THAT up, I think we should all just ignore the rest of your blathering because you obviusly have no idea what you are talking about. By the way, people who talk and think like you tend to wind up in old drafty houses, alone, doing the knuckle shuffle into/onto their numerous thesaureses. As for DK, I'm cautious. I don't like the pics I've seen of Joker thus far. It looks like we've replaced "Wait'll they get a load of me." with "I would f*** me so hard..." Barring that BATMAN BEGINS was the Batman movie I think many of us have been waiting for all our lives so I have the utmost confidence in all involved.

Mr Freeze could totaly work in Nolan's universe. They would just have to scrap some of things from the comics, like the freeze gun. But a suit that is temperature controlled to keep him alive... sure... I can buy that. I think they could find away to make that work. He is one of the most tragic villians in the Batman universe. by Master Bruce
Aug 12th, 2007
07:51:58 PM
then why didn't they just film Frank Miller's BATMAN: YEAR ONE as is? It still holds up as the most realistic treatment The Dark Knight has ever had in the comics. Why let the guy who did INSOMNIA anywhere near this franchise? Didn't the whole Ang Lee/HULK debacle teach these studios anything? BATMAN BEGINS loses all the noir elements of Miller's classic, leaving us w/a plodding, lackluster film that’s a ghost of its former self. And don't even get me started w/the liberties taken; Rachel Dawes...who?...and she grows up w/Bruce in Wayne Manor? Ra's Al Ghul...masquerading as Henri Ducard?...and oh, yeah, he's not an immortal. Bruce Wayne’s training apparently consists of the martial arts only, forgetting that he’s also supposed to be a scientist and the world’s greatest detective! The reduction of or complete non-existence of characters like Commissioner Loeb, Sarah Essen & Selina Kyle, changing Flass from a former Green Beret into a rip-off of the pudgy Lt. Ekhardt from Tim Burton’s BATMAN, Lucius Fox making the antidote to the Scarecrow’s toxin, and for pointing out the need for Robin when Batman can’t be in two places @ once at the film’s end - fight Ra’s or destroy the bridge…hey, Gordon, can you not only drive a hi-tech vehicle but operate it’s weapon systems w/a 2 second tutorial? This movie was a gutted, watered-down version of Miller’s original work. It was also NOT a blockbuster hit, no matter how many times rabid fanboys try to tell you it was. It DID NOT have a first weekend gross of over $100 million like SPIDER-MAN, or SPIDER-MAN 2, etc. It barely cracked $60 that first weekend. Yes, eventually it made its money back, but it wasn't a big hit. I'm also sure after seeing other directors/studios have incredible box office success teaming up w/Frank Miller for both SIN CITY & 300, Warner’s must be quietly kicking themselves for not going w/Miller & Aranofsky on BATMAN: YEAR ONE. All that aside, I hope that THE DARK KNIGHT does for this series what THE WRATH OF KHAN did for STAR TREK. We'll see.

I know the love interest is mandated, but that's what's really frustrating about it. It's on some damned checklist- "film must contain the following." Must be PG13, must have (female) love interest, must contain no less than 3 explosions, etc. Batman can be great at any ratings designation, and the romance angle can work. It just didn't here.
