I'm just wondering if most non-comic readers (or AD&D players) are even going to understand the complexity of the backstory on this. No matter how brilliant the script is, Marvel (or whoever distributes this) is going to have a hell of a time finding an audience for this. ??Pseudo?? Out.

Yeah I agree- it is complex. You should touch on this, and just do the Don Blake thing. There's gonna be 2-3 sequels unless they completely fuck this thing up- you can gradually bring in all of Asgard over time. Besides, who out there doesn't want to discuss casting Jane Foster?? Mmmmm....Jane....

Vladimir Kulich from 13th Warrior, he is a bit older and I don't see Thor looking younger or even late twenties early thirties, he needs to look ageless... and Vlad has that look, but if not he could do Odin quite nicely too, granted a little age enhancing techniques. But I would love to see him handle Mjolnir

a Marvel Comics Thor movie. We need to see him on Earth, and yes I would like to see Donald Blake or at least Jane Foster. The pedigree on this is excellent though. I actually have high hopes. Why couldn't they have waited on DD, FF and X-Men too? At least DD and X-Men are ripe for a total overhaul.

i personally am of the opinion that VINCE VAUGHN should stick to comedies and not try his punacious hand at directing films. i, as a prominent member of the small community of overly smart film scholars am of the opinion that actors should not try their hand at directing because their skill are different in vastness. actors are mainly able to only make emotions of other characters telling them what to do. this is not what directors do, and judging by the idiots on this bored...none of you know what a director does which is why you are all stupid. a director makes what is on the picture and stuff, which is not what an actor does and therefore VINCE VAUGHN, who was brilliantly funny in that one movie with the two cops who were in ROYAL TENENBAUMS (brilliant filim). what do your guys's think?

by Sledge Hammer
Aug 10th, 2007
12:27:48 AM
...than to see DC go down the Marvel path of the last couple of years where they rush out so many mediocre to downright crappy films just to get the properties out there. Yeah, Marvel has been making far more money at the box office, but they haven't been making very many good films, and to me it's that latter factor that's most important.

I mean, as things currently stand, since 2005, DC has given us Batman Begins, V For Vendetta, Constantine and Superman Returns, all films that I'm personally more than happy to have on my shelf, whereas over the same period since 2005 Marvel has given us Fantastic 4, Fantastic 4: Rise Of The Silver Surfer, X-Men: The Last Stand, Ghost Rider, Elektra, Man Thing and Spider-Man 3, hardly an impressive list of films, quality wise, in my opinion. More isn't better, better is better, and right now Marvel needs to be focussing less on more, and more on better.

To be fair though, Marvel's future does seem brighter, and some of the stuff Marvel have in the works looks pretty strong, quality wise, particularly Iron Man, but also Wolverine and Hulk both having lots of potential to get Marvel movies back on track, quality wise. DC, likewise, has some strong looking upcoming releases, with Dark Knight and Watchmen in particular both looking very promising. And of course both companies have tons of projects in various stages of development which may, or may not, happen. Still, hopefully in future both Marvel and DC movies will be maintaining a focus on quality over quantity, but I guess we'll just have to see how things play out.

Apparently they're rushing to get shooting before the end of the year because of some Hollywood talent strike. But if the script is half as good as Harry says it is and with Marvel involved it should already be better than X3's rush job.

Didn't they see what rushing product out or de-funding it because it's "just superheroes" did to the first and last X-Men, or to Daredevil or FF or any number of others? How many times can they do this and not learn? Anyway, I hate when people offer up fucking wrestlers for roles. Come on, just because they have the muscles doesn't mean they can act the part. I would be fine with Viggo in the role. Very happy with that actually. I think he's a perfect choice, but probably would not take it given fear of being typecast as a 'fantasy warrior'. I would also prefer a Cap-centric film to be an Avengers film - I think you can intro him and focus the first film around him while still making it an Avengers movie. I think it's the way to go, with a mix of elements from both the original Avengers and the Ultimates.

by Mr Writer
Aug 10th, 2007
03:01:08 AM
...but then again who is blonde, blue-eyed, 6ft 5in and as wide a car?! As someone said earlier if they go down the wrestler root they could do a lot worse than HHH. Blade 3 aside he can act and he would absolutely nail the look. Just imagine him in his Wrestlemania Conan attire, but with Mjornir in his hands rather than a sledgehammer. You could surround him by a cast of serious actors and it could work. Ray Stevenson would be good too, but I doubt he'll be Frank Castle and Thor! Just please don't let it be Matthew Vaughan's mate Vinnie Jones. I don't hate the man or anything, but that would be the kiss of death for this franchise. So I'm definitely seeing HHH. Cast Clancy Brown as Odin too.

i dislike the notion that those old time comic book artists were actually talented when it came to the actual task of illustrating the pages with great feats of action. they were great men in the realm of story telling but in the visual realm, not so much. i pretty much hate all comic book artists from before the mid-80's when comic book art started filling up with extremely talented and gifted illustrators.

With his long golden locks and cod Shakespearian language, he was always the girly Marvel character kids hated. I didn't know anyone who considered him the best superhero. This movie will cost too much money and sink at the box office because of the downright unlikeability of humourless Thor. I was first introduced to him (and for that matter the rest of the Avengers) during Secret Wars and was always baffled as to why the writers spent such a lot of their time with no-marks like Captain America, Iron Man and Thor as the centre of the story when Spiderman, Ben Grimm and Wolverine were all far more engaging and clearly more popular. I have a suspicion all these Avengers movies will tank.
So is this gonna be in the present day?

If not it's not a superhero movie...which might be what they're aiming for, but then LOTR aside sword'n'sorcery doesn't have such a good record at the box office.

Also, I can't imagine Thor being enough of a bankable property to get the budget required to do Kirby's art justice.

On his own, Thor isn't a very strong character, which is probably why he's struggled to sustain his own series since the 1980s. He needs to be offset against the "being tied to a mortal" thing or the present day and the Avengers. I don't think setting it in Viking times surrounded by other gods is the best route to go.
And another thing,
by Felix the Taster

forgive my ignorance but aren't all these characters from Viking mythology anyway. So if you you wanted to see a movie about Thor in Viking times featuring Loki and Odin then that doesn't make it a Marvel movie any more than Clash of the Titans is. The Donald Blake storyline is the thing that makes this a marvel adaptation so of course it must be central to the story.

* Professsional actor's head on a body builder's body?!
by JDanielP
Aug 10th, 2007
09:42:34 AM
Yeah, I'm sure there would be cries against it...but we are most certainly at a point, with the options of special & visual effects today, to digitally add an actor's face/head to a physical performer's body. (Just look at the STAR WARS prequels.) We may even be at a point today that...we could even mo-cap a computer generated body, along with all actors on a blue (or green) screened stage. (Just look at the mo-cap work in Peter Jackson's "KING KONG" and the "LORD OF THE RINGS" trilogy.) Just how much are they going to computer generate? And how stylish will this be, ...because, as we know, CGI is a wonderful place for artists to have room for creative freedom. (Just look at "300".) ...So, there is much to think about, in terms of how this picture should be visually interpreted. And if I could live the dream of making such a flick, I would do as I've mentioned above. The movie budget would stretch much further with the heavy use of CGI ...and there would be no need of finding a body builder who can be the complete package. --But then, there is one last possibility, as there is the option to dub the voice. Hmmmmmm.... decisions, decisions. Fun stuff, indeed.

be directing this. Despite if it's any good, it looks like Stardust is going to bomb, and if that happens, I doubt Vaughn will be given another fantasy project. But who knows, Thor has never been that popular (even when Walt Simonson made the charcter relevant back in the '80s), so maybe whoever's behind the movie will take the risk. Now that most of the top tier and a lot of the mid tier Marvel characters have gotten films, does anyone think there's a chance for a Hawkeye flick???? Or how about Cloak and Dagger???

If Kevin Feige had any Brains, he'd realize an Avengers movie after Iron Man would be perfect as it could be used as a springboard for different movies. Ultimates was set up that way, as you would a movie. No Captain America Origin but he's a key figure so you understand him straight away and leave a world war 2 movie open, Thor is introduced without a background and leaves it open for his own pre Avengers movie. THINK MOTHERFUCKERS! Also Rhythm and Hues for HULK is fucking ridiculous, they suck mega balls at CGI particularly Organic CGI, only Weta and ILM can come close to organic CGI.

But she's married to Michael Douglas so she doesn't really have to anyway. She's bagged a rich man, that's all that counts. Also, Scarlett Johanssen should be in this, with her Nordic look and big rack and all.

Thor doesn't make it in his own title because he ain't "gritty" enough for the rank and file of humanity. He anchors the Avengers as a strong moral force and the go-to guy in battle. If there is ever a movie, it will probably succeed no matter what, because the rank and file morons of America eat this least common denominator crap marvel is feeding us up. A truly great Thor movie could be made starting in ASgard with some backstory, link up to the modern world and have Thor mingle with mortals to learn a love for Midgard, and finally having Loki or Hela assault Thor in Midgard. I'd love to see Thor fight some frost giants etc. in New York. Maybe a battle with Sutyr.

Kinds of Marvel Fans...Those who like Thor. And....those who don't get it. I am firmly in the latter camp. I like the Ultimates take on Thor, but there's something about the hair metal hair, and the giant buttons on his shirt, and stuff...I don't know...Also, if I'm not mistaken, Loki and Thor are half-brothers, and that's the problem. Loki is constantly jealous of Thor. Best Thor ever? Thor in the Sandman series. "You're THOR?! YOU'RE THOR?! I'm tho thor I can hardly PITH!"

Loki's costume in the comics is borderline retardiculous. Swear to God, I see a guy dressed like Loki, I'm going to be looking for the parade of half-nekkid firemen and the float shaped like a dong.

Why? 1. It's vikings. Vikings have never been made succesfully in movies, except the Icelandic movie The Raven Flies. 2 Vikings never look good on film. For some reason filmmakers have never succeeded to make vikings look cool. They tried on The Pathfinder and they do look bad ass over there but that film bombed. 3. The Pathfinder bombed. 4 Thor looks like a pussy. They would have to do a massive re-design on his looks because nobody and I mean nobody looks good with a metal helmet with wings on it. 5. Thor has very few fans.

Fuck the old fanboys who jerk off to their Kirby era shit. A near exact replica of the Ultimates would work wonders on screen, and the Iron Man movie is already being set up as a nice prequel to such a thing. Maybe throw in the Cap movie, using bits and pieces of the Ultimates and his WW2 stuff, then crank out Ultimates issue #2 and beyond as a series of 3 films(Or at least the first 2).

Fuck the normal Thor, I want my almost definately crazy batshit Thor up until the climax of the second movie where he gets to save everyone's ass! Then you can have your bullshit Gods origin movie. Don't ruin the surprise for the rest of us!

Kevin Nash CAN act as seen in The Longest Yard. Plus Thor needs to be huge....someone earlier said he was too big, I disagree. He had great comedic presense in Logest Yard, and every comedic actor will tell you that its harder to comedy for them than drama. All playing thor consists of is spouting norse jibberish, kicking ass with a hammer, yelling, drinking Asgardian mead, and having lightning strike at his will. its the actor they get to be the normal man who needs to "act"....all the thor persona needs to do is whoop ass. http://kevinbigsexynash.com/pi cs/superbrawl3.jpg I think Nash is the logical choice.

I meant James Marsters, NOT Marsden. Marsden would be wrong, wrong, wrong! But Marsters would be perfect. Clasically trained actor, with lots of combat experience. If you don't know who he is - he played Spike on Angel and Buffy and Brainiac on Smallville.

What studio is going to release this movie. This guy has one Brit hit layer cake and Stocking Barrels? But Swept Away should have ended his run. Stardust the critics gave that 75 percent. Is everyone on crack. I mean that movie showed how inept one could direct Robert DeNiro. Thor the mighty thor in the hands of the Star Dust director. God, give my comic book and Xbox game. I see an Electra, Daredevil failure. If you are going to have a Thor movie have an established director from either the Batman films or X men films direct it. Thor, oh my God, this guy will have twinkle dust coming off the hammer.

Truly a nice guy and the real deal for those of you who have not had the pleasure of meeting Harry before.

I am very happy for both him and his beautiful wife. It was a wonderful night in Baltimore. A nice cool breeze while we all kicked back and watched John Waters Hairspray. I had to roll after Hairspray because of the Horror Con also taking place in Baltimore tonight but I am really glad I made it out and had a chance to meet Harry face to face and chat a little bit.

You're a good guy man. :-)

Just saw it and I was amazed. This is the kind of story I used to dream of when I was a kid. I haven't felt this much utter joy at the movie theater since then either. I wouldn't change a thing. The closest to perfect I've ever seen with a fantasy film. Wow. Though I'm glad I went with the wife and didn't take the kid. We found ourselves feeling awfully gushy and romantic.
Sam Rockwell as Donald Blake, HHH as Thor
by Mr Writer
Aug 11th, 2007
03:59:37 AM
You need to have plenty of Donald Blake to keep the concept grounded. Just look at the new JMS series. You have scenes of Thor fighting monsters juxtaposed with Dr Blake in the real world. Sam Rockwell would be a totally down to earth, likeable, Don Blake, and if you limited Thor's scenes he would have even more impact when he's on screen. HHH would look the business with Mjonir in his hands and you could make Thor totally badass like in that Garth Ennis Thor: Vikings series where he was decapitating monsters with his hammer. He was only a Shakespearean spouting pansy in the 60s and 70s. A viking-style, take no prisoners God of Thunder would rock. Get Brian Cox as Odin (as somebody said earlier) and how about Timothy Olyphant as Loki?

Lets mess with comic kid heads. Gee, so when he’s not the big green machine, he throws a hammer. And after Munich Bana has the muscle. Loki umh not sure, maybe Adam Sandler, and isn't this comic book movie thing getting old. Really old. Captain America Wonder Woman etc. are like over fifty years old. Can’t they come up with something original? Does every movie have to be a remake ala Nicole Kidman ( INVASION, BEWITCHED?) Thor, the mighty Thor was my favorite as a kid with comics, I think it was the gigantic Breasts, and speaking of that when does CAT WOMAN 2 come out.

Though the Matthew Vaughn choice eludes me... Saw 'Stardust' over the weekend, and felt he completely missed the point of the story- a young man's coming of age. Instead, he concentrated too much of it on both Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro. While Pfeiffer's character is important to the story, she's not the focus, and De Niro's character should have been more of a cameo then the heavy story influence he became. All in all, not bad- but not good enough to give me hope on 'Thor', which needs to be done right. At this point, Marvel's gotten it right exactly once- on the Spider-franchise. Nothing else has been done well.

Remember the American Express commercial with Thor, Storm, Spider-Man, Captain America and Underdog? It looked like it was shot at a Universal Studios theme park. Far and away, Thor has the worst-designed costume of all those (Marvel) characters, but somehow he is the best-looking one in the commercial. I don't know how they did it. But I would love to see a live-action space-fantasy film, oh man, like a GOOD and FAITHFUL masters of the Universe film or something

Stopped reading at page 60. Thor's a primadonna. No reason to like him right from the outset. They have mistranslated "swartalf" (dark elf) as GNOME and made them 18" tall (they are SUPPOSED to be the same size as the Aesir/Thor). No fights worth a damn. No hook. By page 60 it has not reached present day. It seems to spend the first act in Asgard, no worries, then Thor is banished to..well..old earth. Bleh. And, while the dialogue moves from good to anachronistic ("that's silly!") it's just plain BORING. I have the same draft Harry does, because we got it from the same source. There's NOTHING Marvel about this...at least not in the first 1/2 of the script...sigh.

It's not enough that he's tall and beefy, he also has to be a big norse hottie. That's just my take. Most of the guys whose names are being tossed around are too old and too ugly (and untalented at that) to play Thor. I mean, Karl Whatshisface Pathfinder Vakko guy could maybe pull it off - MAYBE. No Gerry Butler please. He's awesome and all, but he's taking over hollywood. Plus, he's about as believeable as Thor as Sean Connery was as a Spaniard in Highlander. Ugh- I hate myself for saying it, but a Jason Lewis type would be good. He's too skinny and not tall enough though. But someone pretty like him, and young like him. They should just go hop a plane to Sweden and look around ya know?
