As the trailer started playing...I was thinking...THIS LOOKS SO FRIGGIN RETARDED! But then at the end of it when I saw Gondry's name as director...suddenly it seemed better! I guess my past memory of his work changed my perspective. That is strange no? Actually I think I'd prefer if this were set in France with French actors or unknowns. Jack Black kinda threw me. Anyway...we shall see. :-)

Whimsy has its time and place, Gondry relies on it far too often. This is true of all directors who came to prominence with music videos. Not bad filmmaking by any means, but lacks substance and scope. Eternal Sunshine got its substance from the screenplay and from the actors. Science of Sleep lacked in both. Terrific visual artist, and lets leave it at that.

Dante "Mos Def" Smith?
by keyserSOZE
Aug 8th, 2007
10:36:13 PM
what, is Mos going the way of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? or, i guess what would be a bit more fitting, is Chris "Ludacris" Bridges...although Mos is a much, much, much more talented actor and rapper than Luda, but still...oh, and if anyone is confused by this, not in the actual trailer but on the right hand side of the yahoo movie page where it lists cast, it says Dante "Mos Def" Smith...good stuff.

Mike_D, the review you are mentioning is something i wrote. i'm apologizing because it was a terrible TERRIBLE review. completely unintelligible. HOWEVER, what i said in the review was all correct. The movie really isn't good, and unless they have seriously changed things from when i saw it (which was quite a long time ago) it is one of the worst movies i've seen in a really long time. the trailer does look good. i thought the idea was awesome, but the execution is very poor. the best parts of the movie are when they do their remakes, but those take a back seat to some amazingly stupid side plots. the movie is very amateur-ish, and i am not talking about the remakes. the portions that have nothing to do with the remakes are incredibly awkward. it was actually sort of unbearable to sit through. the remakes are very inventive; just the way they do them are so creative and cool. they were impressive. but that's it. Ghostbusters is the one they show the most of, but its the first and the rest are pretty much shown in montages or just quickly here or there. Gondry is usually style over substance, but this time he is little of either.

From the trailer it looks pretty promising, Mos Def has surprised me as a very likable actor and this time he's the straight man so its not too much on him, and im one of those that like Jack Black regardless how one note he can be sometimes. He's fun. But regardless the actors, Michel Gondry is great. There's no more to it than that and this looks just as good as anything else he's done..although its probably very hard to surpass ESOTSM. And i dont think this will, but they're incomparable anyway.

one of the principal joys of this site is being able to argue vehemently with people who do not share your taste. Relax. It is a pleasure to anonomously slate total strangers in regards to their parentage, sexual preferance, IQ, living arrangements, etc over something as inconsequential as A FUCKING MOVIE.

Don't be so uptight. Or if you are going to be that uptight post somewhere else.

Oh P.S. what happened to the little old lady?
by half vader
Aug 9th, 2007
10:50:05 AM
From what I'd heard before it was all predicated on the idea that their little old lady customer was half blind and couldn't really tell what was going on. It sounded like she was their only customer or something and the film was much smaller (not that this makes it look 'big'). Didn't see that in the trailer. What gives?
This looks great, but....

11:25:27 AM
I'm sure the film will address the fact that there are plenty of ways for customers to see these movies if they wanted to (cable, Netflix, Internet, libraries, other stores, etc). It looks like the film takes place in a poor neighborhood, so Gondry may be going for some social commentary to back up the unique idea. Looking forward to this one.
Michael Gondry has chosen VHS, here's why...
by Johnno
Aug 9th, 2007
12:39:09 PM
It's because DVD is just an overhyped expensive fad that Sony is trying to push on us and makes the PS2 more expensive than it should have been when we already have more than enough space on CD-Roms. Developers will just stuff them with FMV to make it look like they're filling up a DVD which may work fine as a movie format but not for games. It is not needed for its generation.

the 2001 shot is a great and amazing shot, like some of Gondry's music videos, but the remakes can't save this poorly conceived film.

Dasher, no that is not expressed, but you really won't care once you see the movie anyway. It plays over the top with an attempt at whimsy.

And the message that many of you are commenting on is completely lost in the film. That is obviously what Gondry is trying to get at, but he loses it and fails miserably. BUT, I hope a good editor comes in and makes it all better because I would still like to see this concept work.

they ripped off an amanda bynes skit...
by jig98
Aug 9th, 2007
02:56:31 PM
there was a skit on the old amanda bynes show on nicke-fucking-lodeon where they made fun of blockbuster called blockblister. "it's better. {in italian accent} MUCH BETTER!" where they showed amanda, drake bell and some retard "re-making" movies on video. god, how lame can you get? jack black is slowing turning into the next john belushi.
Michel Gondry stole all his ideas from Amanda Bynes
by Garbageman33
Aug 9th, 2007
03:29:38 PM
It's true. He's never had an original idea. That Daft Punk video with the dancing in the mouth gag? Bynes did that years ago. Eternal Sunshine? Bynes again. Go back and watch her Nickelodeon show. Probably the most groundbreaking program since Roots. Or the Suite Life of Zach and Cody.

but as a writer/director Gondry is turning out to be more sentimental and sacharine than Spielberg at his lowest. I guess he's actually a pretty sensitive guy when he's not busy feeling chicks up and macking on everything with a heartbeat at after hours clubs.

i thought the entire premise of this was predicated on the funny business of the only customer being the little old lady. which is actually funny and a plot, not 'all our tapes demagnetized because jack black is magical.' plus, i might heart the D, but jack black in general release is just annoying at this point. it would have been funnier if mos def had been paired with some manic unknown actor given a chance to shine.
