Buffy, Angel and Firefly were all terrific. While I love Heroes, the closest show with the same vibe last season was the Dresden Files - it was in it's early stages (similar to Buffy in season 1), but had potential; it's a shame SciFi didn't give it more of a chance. :(

If Joss was just selling dinner with himself for his own profit, I doubt (hope?) people would pay that much. In this case the event was a fundraiser for Equality Now, so their money goes to a good cause at least.

1) when the most thematically truthful and profound statements are being stated by the villain. 2) when the heroes are never completely happy, but instead of complaining they are just sarcastic about it. 3) when women, whether good or evil, can kick ass as good as, possibly even better than, the men around her. 4) he never misses an opportunity to turn a cliche on its head, especially when its a cliche he invented. 5) he uses long interesting tracking shots like Brian De Palma, only with better dialogue. Any others?

Is Sarah Michelle Gellar as big of a bitch as most people say she is? Did you ever see Charisma's tits before she did Playboy? When did you realize Doyle from Angel had a drug problem and you had to kill him off the show? Did you ever sleep with the chick who played the hooker on Firefly? Shepard was so damn boring on Firefly, was his character really needed?

Joss will be directing a season four ep of The Office (thanks, Herc) and be lending his voice to Seth Green's (oz) Robot Chicken. Hey!! He's likes stuff that I like!!! Joss is so cool.

Oh, yeah and I can totally related about the DVD thing. I rotate through mine: Buffy first (with corresponding Angel 2 parters), then Angel, then Firefly. Not every day but I'll do a glut of them every couple of weeks to get my fix.

How did Buffy go off track in that season? The second episode "Living Conditions", where Buffy gets the annoying but demony college roomate, then segues into "Fear Itself" (actual size??), Oz's disloyalty, The Thanksgiving were Spike is screaming, "You made a BEAR! Undo it! Undo it!", "Something Blue" - which has to be the best cock up of all time and it's all Willow's fault (Spuffy shippage), "Hush" the episode were Joss has compsosed something that has never been seen on TV - a show with almost no dialogue that won the Emmy, Riley becomes an anarchist, Faith switches bodies with Buffy - cock teases Spike, almost bones Riley - Oz's return to Sunnydale to throw a curve into Willow's lesbian relationship "Run.", Jonathan becoming a "superstar" warlock, the magical meshing of the Scoobies and finally the Cheese man. "Death is your gift." It sets up season five, which it arguably the best season of Buffy, imo..

Not the worst season of Buffy, but it definitely started the downward slide. Riley was a very annoying character and seemed forced on the audience. Oz's departure left a void, and Tara (A.K.A. Willow-lite) never really added that much to things. Also, Spike became too much of a joke. It started the trend of him getting punked out every episode. I'd rank the seasons like this: 3,2,1,4,5,6,7.

I'm a relatively recent Firefly convert, having only watched the show in connection with the release of Serenity. Not to come off like an obnoxious browncoat, but the show was truly excellent. One of a kind.

ok now I know LOST has it's haters and it has it's lovers and I'm in the 2nd camp. But despite your option, to say it's just "ok" is something else. I've never heard of this chick, don't know her writing, but serioiusly LOST is a well written show, with a sense of direction, unraveling mysteries. I know it's not a mystery a season, which is maybe what they were wanting b/c Angel and buffy had a similar mystery or arc a season as did VM, but a series long unfolding mystery.

and right now there really is some good TV out there, Dresden had potential, HEROS started slow but really built up until that awful finale, the afro mentioned LOST, Burn Notice (single stand alone episdoes with a slow unfolding mystery), Pysch, etc.

Cheesy statement, certainly. It's thrown around so often that it becomes meaningless and is easily mockable. I would never use this statement lightly. I might joke about it in other contexts, but here I'm totally serious. To not only have his talent, and the ability to make so many people happy and change so many lives, but also to be the kind of person that I can relate to and want to be in my own work (even though I'm not a television writer/director). At least that's how he presents himself. I love this woman's details about how he interacts with them. Making eye contact, actually listening. Someone's who's not too big for his britches, who doesn't seem to take his status too seriously but does take it seriously enough. And actually someone who doesn't buy into a overly macho form of masculinity. To me there are very few 'celebrities' out there that embody the kind of person that I'd want to be or want to know. Joss does. The fact that he writes stories about people I'd want to know. Like what he said in his Equality Now speech, about his work appealing to men who are not threatened by powerful women and who actually respect them. The fact that he's married with children but supports these causes, including gay equality. That he doesn't think Liberal is a dirty word, even though he has people dedicated to him that may not share those beliefs (ie. Adam Baldwin). The kind of atmosphere he's fostered with the Firefly cast and crew and how all of them have said they'd drop what they're doing if they had a chance to return to that world or that situation. And that he has decided to continue writing the stories he wants by his own rules (even if it means doing it in comic form) instead of selling out to the soul-crushing Hollywood machine. And even with that, he can still play in others' sandboxes and do wonderful things with the characters (like his Marvel work). I've never loved Kitty Pryde more than in his Astonishing X-Men. So there you have it. Mock me if you will, but I think this man makes the Entertainment industry respectable. And he has helped me fall in love with stories again like I was when I was a child. If I ever do meet him, you can be sure I will thank him profusely for that.

...a lot of the re-caps are ridiculously entertaining (some of them are also Lametown, but you take the good with the bad). Granted this "Eureka" show not being on their list is by no means a barometer of quality. If their covering shows like "Real World/Road Rules Challenge" means that they're good, then I guess I'm glad I have bad taste. That said, I don't watch "Eureka." I tend to avoid SciFi like it's chickenpox.

*HEAVY SPOILER ALERT* IF YOU HAVENT SEEN BUFFY OR ANGEL AVOID****** Can ruin the TV viewing absolutly. As I have said MANY times, that Joss makes the kind of TV where ANYTHING and EVERYthing can happen and does. No character is sacred, even Buffy died twice, had her man boned by Faith, Angel died and went to hell for 100 years. Fred from Angel was destroyed along with her SOUL. And in its place was left some evil demon that now has to associate with the group. Do I even need to say Cordelia boinked Angel's kid? Man oh man, I miss Joss TV.

I remembered that Buffy!Faith started struggling - which let to great discussions on whether she had been previously raped at the Stakehouse (man, I miss that group) - but I forgot if he talked her down or not. Thanks for the correction.

Faith's story arc that continued on Angel was amazing after that. Just the torture scene with Wesley - hot, cold, loud, blunt and sharp - was twisted and scary. Talk about a slayer with a deathwish.

Seriously. Joss Whedon is a one-note hack. Like him if you want, but some day you'll look back and say to yourself, "Why did I ever like this crap?"

Buffy might have been tolerable if it didn't star Sarah Michelle Gellar-- Her acting and appearance made it seem like I was watching a high school play starring the most popular girl in school, who only got the lead because she was head of the glee club. Her acting even sucks on Robot Chicken.

But hey, 14-year-old girls of the world unite and defend Buffy: "It was the greatest show ever!" -- Yeah, it was deep. Like, super-deep, omigod!

Joss' Kitty Pryde... Seems familiar.
by ZeroCorpse

12:54:26 AM
Where have I seen Joss' Kitty Pryde? Hmmm...

OH YEAH! She's the same as when Chris Claremont was writing her. All Joss has done is dust off some Claremont-era X-Men nostalgia and writing, add some of his own non-sequiter/pop-culture banter, and called it a shiny new thing.

Yeah. I'll mock you. It's pretty easy when you consider Whedon the pinnacle of entertainment.

Zerocorpse? I'm so freakin' surprised. Some day you'll look back and say to yourself, 'why was I such an asshole?' Guess what, I've already looked back (been a Joss fan for 10 years) and I appreciate him even more than I did then. And the 14 year old girl argument, well I've never heard that one before! Only the same idiots who make the same asinine and inaccurate statements every single Joss talkback. So I'll trot out the same old counterarguments. Say it with me now - base demographic of Buffy between 25-39, with many viewers over 40, not just teenagers. I'd say even more so with Firefly. Not many 14 year old girls reading and writing academic texts on Buffy - and there's a lot of them, etc. etc. Get over it.

And did you miss the part where I said 'plays in others' sandboxes'? By definition that means it's not original work. Joss's X-Men stuff (esp. his Kitty) is certainly an homage to Claremont (which he acknowledges) but he's the best at characterization since Claremont, and makes them more real and human than Claremont ever did. Sorry. It ain't the 80s anymore - readers demand more. And have you tried to read anything Claremont's written in the last ten years? [the thing with Nocturne's stroke in New Excalibur was pretty cool, as it was based on personal experience. But 3 words: X-Men: The End (shudder)]. Anyway, I never said Joss is the pinnacle of entertainment, but he is the pinnacle of a model entertainer, in my opinion. The fact that he is respected by so many fans and so many people in the industry, including actors, crew, writers, and critics, speaks volumes. While trolls only squeak.

I'm still amazed at how good Angel got...

That show was fantastic. And to think that some of the best episodes were in the final season. Wesley's metamorphosis from idiot coward to badass is one of the best, gradual things I've seen on television. Also, you VM fans are too harsh. Season 2 is still very, very good stuff.

is after being exposed to Buffy/Angel/Firefly, it has forced me to judge the writing quality of all subsequent programming. After he left the medium for other endeavors, tv has become less of a priority, w/the exception of The Wire and Eureka (which happens to be very entertaining). Burn Notice is pretty good too. I expect it to get even better since Mere Smith was hired a few weeks ago as the show runner since Rome was cancelled by HBO.

Season three through the series finale has some of the most compelling writing and acting. Julie Benz I felt should've won an emmy for her performance during her self-sacrifice scene. Her line reading was downright heartbreaking and season fives' series finale, Not Fade Away was pure art. The final scene with Wesley and Illyria/Fred was some Whedon's best writing. It's one of the few things along with Brian Song, that drives me to shed a few man tears.

Should never have been cancelled. Buffy had run out of steam and reached its natural end, but as a dude above says, Angel Season Five was rip-roaring fuckin' joy, Angel turned into a puppet, Spike riffing off Angel, Fred (*sob*) and Illiriya, World War 2 flashback episodes...it was beautiful, man. Darker than ever, funnier than ever. Of course, it had to go. We can't have those qualities on American television.
