That way, Chekov or Uhuru (or anyone else) MIGHT be killed or married off, and wouldn't have to follow any sort of pre-planned "timeline" laid down by any of the earlier Trek shows or films.

THAT would be cool, as opposed to simply trying to shoehorn in this new films to fit pre-established Trek lore.

THAT would be a more interesting and exciting spin on the films than already knowing ahead of time how everything ends up.

Whether or not Batman, Star Trek, Bond or any of these characters get fleshed out beyond those skeleton personalities depends entirely on who's writing them.

And I certainly think that there's VAST potential for telling great stories involving those characters that don't require following previous Trek history, while maintaining the characters' basic personalities.

The thing I'm still skeptical about, however, is the time setting. Why did they have to set it in the past? Unless Abrams directs a stunning masterpiece of science fiction, this film will always be relegated to woulda-coulda-shoulda. I've always wanted Trek to move forward into the unknown future. But Brannon-Braga et al decided to give us prequel series and parallel series, not one of which pushed viewers into the future. Move it the fuck along already! Most of the technology in the original Trek has already been invented, and we've already advanced farther than Trek ever thought we'd go. So I'm sick of homages, prequels, origin stories, shit that looks backwards. I want NEW stuff, NEW characters, NEW ships, NEW weapons, NEW conflicts, not the same old same old, which Abrams's Trek seems to be swimming with.

Now that my rant is over, I hope JJ busts out a fresh can of whoopass and creates a masterpiece.
