Will Weaveworld, Imajica, or The Damnation Game get film treatment? Quint, did you email Barker a picture of Eli Roth's Huge Prosthetic Wang to get the interview and the home invite? I loved Barker's stuff when I was younger (except The Great and Secret Show), but between his "kiddie" works and his art....I haven't been interested in Barker for quite a while.

Where is the Thief of Always movie? Would be great in 2D animation, or maybe a Henry Selick stop motion feature. Love King, but Barker always seems to be operating on his own plane. The scope and ambition of books like Imajica, Weaveworld, Great and Secret Show, et al is beyond most horror fiction. I met him a book signing several years ago, and he seemed really cool (although he didn't hit on me like he did Quint, thankfully).

Questions for Barker

What is the status of the Tortured Souls movie? If it happens will he still direct it? Will The Scarlet Gospels come out anytime soon? He's a fantastic short story writer and I look forward to seeing more shorts in "Scarlet..." At one point he spoke of finishing Arabet 3 & 4, and then completing the third and final book of The Art. Is this still his general plan? He's also spoken of having a story larger then anything he's ever tried before after all these other projects are complete. Could he give any hints? Good job as always Quint. Cheers, Clive! I look forward to everything you do.

04:12:57 AM
No fucking thanks. If they can make those HARRY POTTER books into live action movies then they damn well can and must do the same with both TIEF OF ALWAYS and ABARAT. As for what's up with ABARAT, my guess would be they're waiting for him to finish all the books before they start making the movies. They'll have to use the same actors after all (especially for the lead girl) and they couldn't do that if he won't finish the fifth book (it's no longer a quartet after all) before 2020. With Barker, a delay like that shouldn't surprise anyone.

...and at least has the imaginative ability to continually create new imaginary worlds and mythologies, rather than trot out the same old orcs or vampires stuff. That being said, he's an ill-disciplined sod who has far too many book series ongoing at the same time. Finish something, already, Barker! Last I heard, Disney had dropped the ARABAT movie series idea, but not before they paid Barker a shed-load of money. As for the movies? Well, CANDYMAN's the best one (probably because he didn't direct it himself), but all of the Barker-directed movies at least have tons if left-field ideas and genuinely disturbing ideas in them, even if the films don't always feel that cohesive. David Cronenberg taking off his mask in NIGHTBREED - that still creeps me out...
I like Barker...

05:29:14 AM
...Because when he's on, he's REALLY on - HELLRAISER was great, Part 2 had some interesting ideas but fuck-all FX budget to do them with, and forget the rest (4 is kind of watchable though). CANDYMAN worked like a motherfucker - terrifying stuff! Even his so-called "flops" are interesting failures, such as LORD OF ILLUSIONS (watchable) and NIGHTBREED (some awesome practical FX and make-up in that). I'd rather see an interesting failure from Barker than yet another redneck torture epic from Rob Zomhillbilly. The man's mind goes places that most of us don't EVER want to go.

Check out the HELLRAISER graphic novels - now THAT'S how to keep a franchise going in other media! - and the BOOKS OF BLOOD, which have some of the most disturbing short stories EVER.

He's not to everyone's taste, but I'll be damned if Clive Barker ain't some sort of genius.

Some of you are actually serious in calling for an Imajica movie. It won't happen, and it shouldn't happen. It shouldn't happen because to do it right would mean NC-17 since it's downright porn in some parts, and at least one of those parts is crucial to the big reveal about Gentle & Judith; and it won't happen because to do it right would also mean a budget to dwarf LOTR, and nobody is going to spend that much money on a fairly obscure fantasy-horror-religious allegory novel the size of a dictionary, especially one that'll likely be NC-17. Maybe if Dark Tower gets made and does a decent amount of business we'll see this happen, but has anyone even considered it? Seems like quite the Herculean task that not many directors are up to.

Decent production values, no major issues with censorship, quality pedigree. Coming soon, from the makers of ROME and DEADWOOD...IMAJICA! I should be a producer or something. Oh, and jimbubble - on reflection you're right. They shouldn't remake HELLRAISER. But the awkwardness of the UK setting in the first movie (with additional US accents) and the allegedly US setting of the second bugs me, as does the rubbish about the mattress and who was supposed to have dies on it...

Barker will be signing his new novel Mister B. Gone on Saturday Dec. 1 @ 2pm at Dark Delicacies in Burbank. It's a non-series short novel that's full-on horror. It's told in first person by a "minor divil" named Jakabok. The planned release date is Oct. 30th. The Scarlet Gospels is now a stand alone, apparently very large, novel that is "Pinhead vs. Harry D'Amore". Mister B. Gone was written as a small break before plunging into finishing The Scarlet Gospels. For more info on upcoming projects go to: www.clivebarker.info
