I love the fact that he eclipsed Richie with ONE movie

And proved himself to be far more talented at actual film direction, and no less talented at visual stylistics.

With Favs wrapping up Iron Man, Wight on Ant-Man and Vaughn (hopefully) doing Thor, the likelihood of a well-made Avengers movie improves. Maybe David Yates will be available after Harry Potter 6?

Anyone should try and find a copy of Low Winter Sun for a breathtakingly brilliant turn from Strong. He almost made Revolver watchable too.

It's obvious that Vaughn answered all of Capone's questions himself and Capone just went along writing everything down accurately. So much for this site's credibility...

Funny how Christopher Ecclestone and Daniel Craig have obviously gone onto being these huge names, and now Mark Strong is being talked about in the same terms. Whoever cast that show must have been a bloody genius.

Someone should do Princess Bride by way of Midnight Run. DeNiro can be Wesley, Grodin can play Buttercup, Yaphet Kotto can play Andre the Giant. It's perfect!

Boycotting out of pure nerdiness. Welp, since they made Juggernaut a mutant, I swore I wouldn't see it until it's on TBS or something. Fucking Fox. First Fox News and now X3.

Aug 7th, 2007

but I don't agree that Layer Cake is better than Snatch and LockStock. Richie's films may not be perfect, but they're edgier and funnier. Other than Craig, the performances were far superior (or maybe their parts were better written).

Not that I'm knocking Vaughn, and I'm really looking forward to Stardust. I hope it lives up to the hype.

Thor is a GREAT property for an adaptation imo...Thor has the whole 'Shazam-like' alter-ego thing going on with Donald Blake. Check out Kirby's original run on Journey Into Mystery...fun stuff.
Gay Pirates? How original....
by TheJake
Aug 7th, 2007
09:34:39 AM
Um, that is unless you take into account the origin of the term "butt pirate". Pirates were notorious for being homos while on long voyages. How is that original? Shit, there's even a well known saying in the Navy about sailors on subs - "12 men go down, 6 couples come up." And um, how about that Village People song...
LAYER CAKE is way overrated.

And STARDUST looks just like PRINCESS BRIDE, or a made-for-TV fantasy film, but with better actors. Seriously, every shot of Michelle Pfeiffer in the trailer looks like some kind of Disney-produced evil-witch-step-mom movie. This thing is gonna fucking tank.

X3 the best one?
by Cellar Door
Aug 7th, 2007
10:31:58 AM
Hmmm..personally, I'd disagree but not by much. I think for such dramatic story turns they should have taken a bit more time and fleshed it out a bit. Ratt did far better than I ever thought he could and without a doubt X3 has the best and most realized/focused soundtrack of the 3. But Juggernaut as a mutant was dumb but forgivable (tho not the muscle suit...wtf??!?!) and for the purists, the unforgivable interpretation of Dark Phoenix. Easily the least of the 3 but still a watchable action/popcorn flick. (For those who think X2 sucked, watch the first 10 minutes again and tell me of just one scene that sweet in X3?)
X3 was a pretty good film... but....

I would have been happier if Singer had directed it, but I thought in the end it wasn't a bad film. Only thing that bothered me was the scene where Magneto turns his back on Mystique once she was no longer a mutant. As if! He wouldn't have turned on one of his own like that. He would have found a way to bring her back as a mutant.
LAYER CAKE was terrific.

X3 was not good. However, due to the unmitigated shit that surrounded it, and the festering rancid corpse of cinema that has been on display this summer it now looks like Raiders of The Lost Ark.

It's a decline in standards all round.

As an X-Men fan I have to admit that it was competently done as an action movie which is a miracle and should earn Ratman a bit of credit given the rush job schedule and shit script. But yea, as an "X-Men movie" it pretty much was insanely blasphemous to canon, which was pretty much the only thing that kept me from enjoying it as a normal movie.

by oisin5199

What a clusterfuck of epic proportions. Terrible editing with absolutely no emotional content, cheesy dialogue, actors phoning it in for a paycheck, ass-raping of X3 mythology and disrespecting major characters, too many useless mutants, a non-sensical climax. The list goes on. How anyone can think X3 is the best XMen film is beyond me. Vaughan saw a screaming train wreck and got out while he still could. Good for him.

And as excited as I am at the possibility of Vaughn directing Thor, another side of me wishes he'd turn to something a bit more original. Then again, if he doesn't direct Thor, it'll probably be shit. Oh, and I agree with liljuniorbrown about Ratner not doing Superman. Thank God.

...and jumped ship when the Rat came on. Whch sucks, i grew up with the XMen and wanted the third one to be something special. It was, Something Especially Wretched. I don't blame you Matt, you seem like a guy with integrity. Anyway Stardust should redeem your comic-to-film- geek cred nicely. Even though...it was a novel...before a comic.....whatever...

"Kill Cyclops because he is busy making Superman"
by Donald Trump
Aug 7th, 2007
06:21:56 PM
I don't care how well-crafted the film could have been, the film still fails at the basic conceptual level: "Kill Cyclops because he is busy making Superman Returns."

Offenses Vaughn committed against the X-Men (in no particular order):

1 - Removing Cyclops, the Heart of the Phoenix Saga story. Moronic decision (although his hand was probably forced by FOX on this decision)

2 - the Mutant Cure - using a 2-month old, Joss Whedon plot point (and Whedon-invented character! [indian doctor]), instead digging deeper into X-men lore for a better story.

3 - Having Magneto emotionally manipulate the Phoenix

4 - Killing Xavier

5 - Killing Jean

6 - Curing Rogue (??!?!?!??!?!)

7 - Changing Juggernaut's origins and power

8 - Curing Mystique

9 - mangling/ under-utilizing Colossus

Gosh I had forgotten how worked up I could get about X3
by Donald Trump
Aug 7th, 2007
06:29:30 PM
before I forget,

10 - Completely ruining the Sentinels, minimizing them to a Danger Room simulation, and stamping out any future possibility of them being used as a serious threat from humans.

It has been a long time since I saw the movie, and during that period I had become a little more accepting of it, but now my eyes are open once again! This was a travesty!!

Yea the Cyclops dying thing, among most of those other things probably, was pretty much decided entirely by the studio and wasn't vaughn's idea. Theres a X-Men filmverse fan site I forgot the name to, but before and after X3 came out they hosted a Q&A with the screenwriters. Sure enough when the complaints came in about how butchered the phoenix saga and the characters were, they basically said something along the lines of 'Sorry but, we sincerely tried the best we could with the framework and notes we were given to work with', especially the part about Cyclops.
Oh yea...

Why couldn't vinnie jones just have worked out for his role in X3? the "lets just do a rubber muscle suit approach" is pretty lame. well, that and making him a mutant... and making no mention that he and "wheels" are step brothers... and making his head look like a penis... oh nevermind.

by pipergates

his abilities, creative strengths would work wonders for Thor, and even his hacky tendencies could fit a superhero like this- over the top and exaggerated special effects could look really cool with this Marvel-Asgardian. Someday is hope somebody makes a movie about the real Thor and Odin and Valhalla, far away from the tacky plastic suits and infantile behavior Marvel has thrust upon it... Vaughn might be the one able to add a bit of the old legends to it.

The Alcatraz siege is so fucking retarded. Magneto, going completely against character, sends hundreds of his nu-metal mutants to die for no reason while Jean stands on the sidelines looking evil. Only after their entire force is nearly decimated, does she step forward and destroy the entire fucking compound single-handedly. Why didn't she just do that right from the start? Oh, that's right, because the movie is a piece of shit. I was actually thinking I might get some enjoyment out of the movie, but the entire affair was just idiotic. I can't imagine shit like Daredevil, Elektra, or Ghost Rider being much worse than that.
