Then I have no fears that this will at least have the look of the comic. It was a very short lived Image title. I am surprised they are digging so deep for source material. The book was really good though and I am looking forward to seeing what they do with this movie.

they make it violent, dark, and fucking scary. If they cop out and make this a PG 13 kiddie movie, where Linkin Park plays every time she morphs (oh the teenage angst!) then it will be yet anoooother awesome horror idea raped by studios with no balls. Also, whoever that chick is needs to get naked at least like, once every other scene.

I even had an Ariel Chylde action figure at one point. It was pretty decent, although it seemed like just another, "How can I draw young girls i as little clothing as possible" comics at first glance. The story was actually pretty decent and should make for good movie imagery. I believe Randy queen was the creator of DarkChylde.

I only read a little bit from the comic. It was still new when I stopped reading them, but from what I recall, the big draw was...well...the drawing.

I'm skeptical about this as a horror flick. It ought to be shooting for something like PAN'S LABYRINTH (texas is the seat of our neo-fascism - aka the burning Bush). The contemporary political framework is already in place for it.

anyway, it was a decent comic book, and it has to be horror-ish. But I'm wary of a comic2film that aims for horror. The results are always shoddy, Uwe Bollocks flicks that only Rob Zombie *might* embrace. Yuck. Sorry for associating Rob with Uwe. That's unforgivable. :-/

Every filmmaker that says they're doing something influenced by Alien usually ends up a million miles away from it. What they really mean to say is that they're making a movie where an alien/creature goes around killing people. That's where the similarities end. I would LOVE it if someone actually DID manage to capture the whole atmosphere that Ridley Scott had going on there.

I thought EVENT HORIZON did a pretty nice job of emulating ALIEN, and PITCH BLACK was a quality ALIENS knockoff. But yeah, the ALIEN analogy is seriously overused. Still though...a nice compliment to one of best sci-fi & horror films of all time (imo).

a similar comic from the same era that I would really love to see is THE DARKNESS, which I guess has a new video game that I can't be arsed to play. They're probably so similar in premise that people would scream plagiarism, but I felt THE DARKNESS kept my attention beyond the scantily clad girl drawings.

When will it end? Remember when it was the guys that used to kick ass in action movies? Sly, Ah-nuld, Dolf... hell, even Van Damme. Now all action movies are equal opportunity employers unless they're already completely drenched in estrogen.

Misogynist? Far be it from AICN TB to refrain from whipping out the most exaggerated accusation first. But facts be facts... Charlize, Jovovich, Jolie, and most of all, Knightly, could never hold their own against Sly, Ah-nuld, Dolf... hell, even Van Damme.

I remember reading Darkchylde and finding it one of the more poorly written comic books. Unoriginal and the dialogue was downright squirm inducing. I remember just not buying into the story at all and find it... well... stupid. The author, being male, just didn't have a clue as to how to write a female character. A talented screenwriter might be able to do something with the source material but a lot of original material will need to be introduced.

Yep... it was bad. There are so many other hot comic book stories that would make good movies. What happened to the movie rumors about Preacher? The only way this will work is to bring in a male AND female writing team so the female can say "Whoa...women don't think/act like that." Otherwise this will be just another Catwoman failure and an excuse to shove an unknown actress with a big rack into a 2-sizes too small outfit.

Randy Queen created Darkchylde
by Doc_Strange
Aug 6th, 2007
07:34:46 PM
Don't know if that was emphasized here. I wasn't a big fan of the comic either. I thought Queen tried to draw too much like Michael Turner and Turner's work has actually degraded over the years with his work on Fathom and now the Marvel titles. Queen's faces looked like carbon copies of Turner's faces and so on.

However, I give props to Queen, whom I met when he was working at Top Cow. He was supposed to be the original penciller for The Darkness comic but Marc Silvestri soon replaced him. He has stuck to his guns and I can't say I've ever seen him sell out to any of those companies. This looks like it could be a cool movie on the big screen and could bring some deserved exposure to Queen. Good luck to him.

This could be a cool film with WETA doing its thing. That said, I hope "Underworld" is a distant (if nonexistent) influence on "Darkchylde." Len Wiseman's debut was clean and polished, yet strangely devoid of anything evoking fear.

I'm all for "Darkchylde" going for an "Alien" influence, but that means a slow, atmospheric buildup, chains rattling softly as characters traverse poorly lit chambers, and deviantly atonal music creeping like a heartbeat. Think you can do this, Darkchylde director? Because if your film becomes a slam-bang, chick gorefest, then it's nothing like "Alien" and you're talking out of your ass.

Not that you'd be the first person making a film to do so. I wish you luck.

If there ever was a comic book film adaptation deserving of being written off as shit before it's even made, it would be Darkchylde. I don't know Randy Queen, he may be a saint of a man, but Darkchylde was possibly the worst of the 90's "bad girl" fad, though maybe second to "Lady Death." Maybe Queen has grown artistically since the first few issues of this I read when they came out, but all I remember was that the art made Michael Turner's work seem competent, even adept, in comparison. And Turner's a hack. From the impossibly bad anatomy in the gratuitously endless stripper poses to the inbred comic book tripe dialog, it was the kind of bad art/bad writing that makes even the most empathetic apologist fanboys cringe in embarrassment. I have trouble believing Weta would actually slum this low. I can't imagine this will be anything but Uwe Boll-level bad.

Good point, Bald Evil. Why not just call this story "Dark Child"? Replacing "i" with "y" is a lowbrow tactic to create a false sense of the exotic.

I'm aiming my complaint at the writers of the comic book, not the filmmakers. This is like writing "Lord of the Ryngs" or "The Matryx." The added "y" means nothing, says nothing, and evokes nothing. If anything, it ruins a property I might've taken seriously if they'd spelled it right in the first place.

I'm suddenly not excited for "Darkchylde" (see what I mean?) anymore.

Underworld was a boring, awful, pretentious movie, but it's "vibe" was the only thing good about it. I think it's easy to dismiss it as a whole, but he's only refering to a single aspect of it.

As for the blue light. That's how it's done in comic books, guys. It also reminds me of the awesome, primary color palette Dario Argento liked to use. Get over it.

Spelling Darkchylde
by mrdinky
Aug 7th, 2007
10:55:21 AM
The spelling explanation is actually pretty simple: copyright. I think Darkchild was the name of the baddy in GHOST RIDER, wasn't it? anyway, it's a repeatable name. if we're gonna go all "grammar hammer" on it, I should think the final "e" is more annoying since there's no other phonetic possibility with the "y".

do you guys really give a shit about the spelling? or do you must hate the hell outta this comic? I didn't think it was THAT bad. it was completely forgettable except for the pin-up aspect. but I've read far worse Marvel tripe in the x-men and spidey books. far far worse. and with worse art as well.

You liked Darkchylde. I can safely say your opinion on the tastes of others means jack shit.
The comic was inconsistent, why are they making a film?

The comic had a cool concept, but the problem always start when these comics from lessor publishers are released. They are inconsistant, and late. It just gets fustrating waiting on the next issue to come out that you just go phuck it and and stop reading. When an issue is finallyt you've forgotten what the story arc was about and then it's rebooted to another story arc, so why bother. The shot looks ok, not really overly impressed, and I recall the lead girl had blonde hair. Who really cares at this point.

Underworld vibe as in referencing a recent and successful film (Carrie and Aliens were in the 70's) with a female lead and creatures that grossed gangbusters in theatrical and dvd on both outings. If we make a bad film, then you'll have a reason to hate on it. But because we are as passionate about these things as you are, we are going to make every effort to create a good film. If the alchemy and stars align and we do, then the horror fans of the world win. All of the films referenced very specifically had an R rating, and did quite well with it. And respectfully, I'm not sure Cameron is responsible for popularizing the blue light for night. Watch Carpenter's original Halloween, or the making of, where he addresses this aesthetic choice. It doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of that film one bit. Wish us luck with this. Peace. ~Randy Q.

and everyone else... I agree that saying 'it's sexy/cool' is lame/warm as far as I am concerned. It's like every damn DP who saw THE MATRIX said... "let's oversaturate the shit outta everything, then they'll be so entranced with it's PURTY-factor they won't notice how much shite it really is." I think Bill Pope out to sue every last one of those wankers for stealing his look. Same for John Gaeta. Slow-mo doesn't always = AWESOME. Sometimes it's just slow 'cause they got nothin' else. I am NOT talking to you Zack and your 300 posse (all of whom could probably kick my ass)... I am talking you, Bloodrayne A-Holes. You know who you are. I saw 3 minutes of that movie and had to change the channel.
I don't know if I'll like the movie...

too busy jerking off to the usual pedestrian renderings of chicks with skinny waists and triple-D racks to realize the writing stunk like a fetid pile of festering, bloated, maggot-infested road kill.

LMAO! I love that in the press release Queen puts himself FIRST -- because, you know, it means SO much more to me that HE'S "intimately involved" versus say...oh, I don't know...ACTUAL PROFESSIONAL FILMMAKERS WHO HAVE WON OSCARS. For crying out loud, talk about telegraphing an ego.

Besides -- what the fuck IS this? I mean, as a movie? I know what DARKCHYLDE was. It was an utterly forgettable comic from years and years ago that was poorly written, poorly drawn, never came out on time (which was even more laughable since it only lasted a few issues), but because it got mushed in with the whole Image Comics explosion and comics that people speculated on rather than actually READ, it succeeded and put some nice coin in Queen's pockets.

But don't try to tell me it was high art in the comic medium or anything like that. It was a badly drawn, big busted chick fighting monsters, and it came out at a time when speculators thought pin-up shots of big busted chicks thrusting out their chests page after page was the shit. Of course, all of that crap is now clogging up garbage fills across the nation, so we know how well THAT notion turned out...

But seriously, what IS this? Even if you click on the link supplied, the guy is still pimping reprints of comics from 10 years ago -- but even at the site there doesn't seem to be an actual notice about the movie. No star listings, no nothing. So why do I suspect this is AICN being played? That maybe Queen talked WETA...or payed them out of pocket...to shoot a few stills or film a SFX sequence TO TRY and get a film up and running? I notice he says "It's our HOPE" to do something and not "It's a done deal. Here's the studio. Here's the budget. Here's the stars."

Hey, my attitude in life is to wish everyone well. If Queen lucked out and got a movie deal, then fine for him. On the other hand, as others here have noted, I will say it sort of shits a brick simply because there are a billion other comics out there that are FAR more deserving of a shot on the big screen or TV for actually being original or cool. This thing had a storyline that read like a bad BUFFY episode regurgitated. My guess is, if this gets made, I can look for it on Sci Fi alongside MANSQUITO 2...
